The Topiary Cafe @ Strikes Garden Centre in Hambleton

I would have given this an average rating but for the whole pile of black, slimy and rotting salad leaves hidden in with the rest under the pile of prawns. There is no excuse for serving such poor quality food. Certainly won’t be going back.

This is a decent offering of simple English food. There is lots of indoor and outdoor seating in the restaurant and a large, well stocked garden center which you pass through on the way in and out. We had a jacket potato with cheese and beans, Greek salad and ham baguette and a side of chips. The food was very good, served quickly and good value.

After being let down by another restaurant we managed to book in here for afternoon tea. They don’t usually start serving it until 14:30pm but they allowed us to visit at 12:30pm. Staff were efficient and friendly, they went above and beyond to accommodate us at such short notice as we were staying at Angrove country park which is only a 5 minute drive away. The afternoon tea was very reasonable priced at £15pp and the quality and quantity of the food was exceptional. Really happy with our visit, would highly reccomend and the garden centre itself was an additional bonus to our visit. Thank you so much.

We went here and had the ‘Thursday afternoon special’…two meals for £15. We were impressed with the quality, taste and presentation of both of the meals. Hubby enjoyed his chocolate brownie and ice cream too 😊 The staff were friendly and the service we received was good.

Lovely food,quickly prepared, presented nicely. Lovely Friendly staff. The quiche I had , was delicious. Hubby had ham eggs and chips , he said that was really nice and tasty. Very clean and bright.

Paid £60 for afternoon tea for 4. The scones were very dry, the sandwiches were dry round the edges. The worst afternoon tea and the most expensive.

The food was okay but could have been hotter (I had the bbq gourmet baguette). The table system is strange in that you are expected to get a table before you order your food. This we discovered when we got to the checkout. Luckily, I had a coat I could put on a chair back to claim a table so that I could give a table number for the food. I have no idea what would have happened had i not been able to do this.

Tea cake and scones really nice. Unfortunately the service is poor, they have changed the way you order drinks and this usually means standing in a very long queue. The staff making drinks are quite good but by the time you get along the queue the coffee is cold because it's been stood for a long time. Why they don't open the second coffee stand during busy times is beyond me.

Strikes Garden Centre at The Roundabout, Meadowfields, Stokesley TS9 5HJ is a gem! This stunning garden center offers a delightful experience with its diverse range of gifts for all ages. We visited the café at Strikes for a quick lunch as we headed north. It was recommended by a family friend, and we were very happy with our visit. There was a fairly long queue, but it was lunchtime at a garden centre café, so no great surprise, and it gave us a good chance to choose our cakes! After 5-10 minutes, we were served speedily & efficiently and we placed our orders for tea, cakes and some sandwiches from the lunch menu. We had barely got back to our table by the time the sandwiches arrived, which was really impressive. The food was all lovely, and the portions were very generous for the price. I would guess that the dining area has been extended fairly recently, and I'm not surprised. I'd happily go again the next time we're passing through Northallerton.

We came here on a Sunday for two meals whilst visiting the garden centre. The queue was exceptionally long with no organisation, mainly delayed by people ordering hot drinks. Why not have one person taking orders and continuously serving whilst others prepare hot drinks and customers move to the side. Anyway, my food was actually ok (fish gouging sandwich). My mum had the roast beef and we contemplated seeing if the garden centre had any saws for sale to help her get through it. Tables were not regularly cleared, toilets were a mess. Overall a disappointing experience.

This is a large cafe with indoor and outdoor seating at the back of the large Strikes garden centre. There is a good selection of food - hot and cold - and drinks. We had soup, jacket potato with cheese and beans, a few slices of cake between us. Although it was busy, service was quick and all of the food very good and fair value.

Visited on the day of the Christmas Event. At 3.45 I asked if one needed to book for the 4pm meal. I was told “No, just join the queue and we’ll take your order” only three people were queueing. I was asked what I wanted which was a pot of tea and a turkey meal. I was told by a young lady, in no uncertain terms, that the meal did not start until 4pm. By that time the senior lady from the till was standing close but took no notice of the unpleasant incident. I have always found the food to be excellent, but the till service not at all pleasant. My last time after this incident.

Darlington Town mission friends and volunteers came to the cafe for hot drinks and cake on an afternoon visit. We were given a designated seating area and were so well looked after. We all can't wait to comeback again.

Went here for Sunday lunch, as we usually have a roast beef dinner here once evry 2 months as a treat, however on this occassion the standard of food has gone down as the roast beef is now chewy, thinly sliced and stuck together, where as before it was thick slices and tasted divine, clearly cutting costs and quality, staff are ok, Sunday lunch here is now £12.95 each. Very disappointed will not be back

Just had a family high tea at Strikes restraraunt in Stokesley.It was fabulous.. Sandwiches lovely and fresh.Scones with clotted cream and jam , delicious.Lots of small tasty cakes.So much food we had to have a box to take some home.Staff were lovely and accommodating to.No wonder it's so popular on a rainy miserable day.We are already planning another family visit there

Very clean and spacious with experienced staff. Lovely food and relaxing atmosphere. We go here as often as we can, sharp contrast to many other cafes at the moment. Full breakfast or just a cuppa and cake and lovely Sunday lunches. Leisurely stroll around the shop and garden centre. Very relaxing break and well worth a visit.

Excellent Service from the Staff behind the counter and their Smiles Brightened a miserable rainy day. The Gardener’s Breakfast was brought immediately and the quality and presentation was as usual ‘hot and extremely tasty’ . Excellent value for money in this day and age when there are price rises every day. It is a treat for us when we go to Strikes at Northallerton and we have never been disappointed! Thank You.

Have just been to Strikes Northallerton! Went shopping then decided to have lunch there, safety because of COVID very good...we had to give our name and were told 15minutes for a table which we accepted...no menu on walls to say what they had and you had to use your phone on a QR Code to call up the menu once you had got to your table, choice of food was poor and we walked out...we appreciate there being a reduced menu but if there had been one on display before we entered, we would have known not to book a table and wouldn’t have wasted 15 minutes looking around the shop again! Won’t be going back until COVID is over because we’ve always been satisfied previously!

I totally agree with the review earlier where has customer care gone I understand we all have to be COVID safe and all places have to make it safe for both customers and staff but when you meal is plonked down on a different table and you have to get up and get it and the waiter who served us practically ran away from our table not asked if we needed any thing else we were made to feel so unwelcome as I work in a restaurant you can make it safe and also make it a nice experience for your customers We liked the food but have a word with your waiter he his in wrong job

had coffee then a lunch here and witnessed best practice. Plenty of distance between tables. Ordering and paying via an app on phone. Prompt delivery of drinks followed by attractive presentation food which was lovely.the staff had a great system for taking you to your seat and explanation of procedures. Staff had visors and looked comfortable. The tables were cleared away with staff wearing gloves,something I have not witnessed in other premises. The tables were then cleaned extremely well so much so that we commented to a staff member. Well done to all the staff a credit. These procedures work better than the complicated situation before covid. Assistance was given to those who struggled with computer/phone

People’s safety was priority. Making sure that people had sanitised their hand before entering. Ordering was explained easily at a good social distance. Ordered food on my phone and paid with no problems. I also witnessed the tables and chairs being thoroughly cleaned including the chairs with disposable cloths. Unlike so e other places I have witnessed same cloth and a dust over the table. The food is also served at a social distance - your own table next to you to ensure that they can be no cross infection And thoroughly cleaned also. The staff here are doing a fantastic job on adhering to ALL of the guidelines whilst still maintaining good quality food. Those that complain clearly do not understand about cross infection or protecting yourselves from others. Well done strikes will be back soon.

My 96 year old friend and I went to Strikes in Northallerton for lunch today and we were absolutely delighted with the totally efficient way in which the restaurant has been organised - everything was sanitised after each customer, the food was brought to the table, the staff were extremely pleasant and the social distancing was well organised as well as the food being excellent. We both thoroughly recommended it!

We used to really enjoy Strikes in Stokesley, but today, our first visit following lockdown, it was like stepping into a completely different place.As you walk into the garden centre there is a screen that advises allocated seating and table service only. Fine, and we were allocated our seat, but it is not really table service. You are told to go on an app and make your order against the few choices there were. Call me old fashioned, but table service is somebody taking your order who you can ask questions about the food and involve some level of personal interaction. The experience now is akin to ordering something from a vending machine. And good luck getting the WiFi to connect as none of the staff seem to know the correct password and mobile signal is next to nothing!Once ordered, sure, somebody brings the food to your table, but it gets put down on the table next to you and you then have to get up and serve your own plates. Drinks, they came later when they remembered they had an order for you. I'd like to say this was a one-off, but we observed all tables getting their drinks served after their food had arrived.Choice of dishes has completely diminished to a small set menu. I was really looking forward to a nice big slice of pie, stuffed to the brim with filling, that I remember fondly from our last visit in January. But pie is not even a menu option anymore.We went for a couple of standard Sunday lunches, 1 beef and 1 chicken. Though I don't recall the menu identifying it as coming cold, dry and lacking in quantity.Each dish comprised the meat, a large Y.pud, two potatoes, 1 bit of parsnip, 1 bit of carrot, 2 small florets of broccoli, some red cabbage and a small squirt of gravy, oh and a huge blob of stuffing - which I had asked to be left off, but hey, why read what the customer requested!Asking for a little mint sauce resulted in a firm denial with the words, "we don't do that anymore".Overall, very expensive for a lunch costing over £11.As I said, drinks arrived late and that was another disappointment. They have decided to start serving lattes in teacups. I even questioned if I had been given the wrong size, but apparently not. At best, the cup had 150ml (2.5 mouthfuls to be exact), hidden beneath the thick layer of foam - so it is even less than you first think.Not even a 3/4 latte or flat white sizing but about 2/3rds the size it should have been (and if memory serves me right, what it used to be). My wifes Hot Chocolate came in at the correct size (and of what the latte should have been), but she said it tasted like flavoured water, again, not the quality of what they used to serve.Suffice to say we were very disappointed with the whole experience and until normal service is resumed we will not be re-visiting.

Not one welcoming gesture,word or smile from the 3 different staff we dealt with. Plus the tables are where people queue for loos so distancing tables was a waste of effort. Expensive boring food upside is 60 mile drive worthwhile got all i came for in the shop and a smile.

Visited the cafe for a catch up lunch with my sister today - the first since lockdown.The cafe was extremely well organised and covid safe. Tables were sanitised after each use, and food can be ordered and paid for by phone or contact less at your table. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and all knew what they were doing. Walked in on-spec with 5 friends for drink and light lunch. Service was extremely safe with food and drinks served to adjacent table for safety reasons. Food was good quality and priced very competitively with friendly and jovial waiters. Will definately visit again.

Really well organised for social distancing and sanitising. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The mushroom soup was hearty and delicious, as was the accompanying bread. Cherry scone and lemon curd tart were equally delicious too.

My Sister and our friend used to go regularly to the cafe for just a coffee and some cake when we visited the garden centre. It seems that after re-opening from 'lock-down', the staff have entirely changed, and not for the better. The impression given by the staff who served us, was that we were a nusiance that had to be tolereated and no more!! No greeting whatsoever, no conversation, robotic one-word answers, and no thank-yous. The need a damn good slap and at least a week's training in Customer Service. The drinks arrived and the coffee, latte, and hot-chocolate were all luke-warm, and the scones would have served better as tennis balls, completely dried out. We will not be returning there again, but go elsewhere before shopping in The Garden Centre itself. I might add that the garden centre staff are completely the opposite, they couldn't be more friendly or helpful if they tried.

Came here when they reopened and really enjoyed the soup. It was tasty and hot and the staff pleasant. Just come back from lunch. My daughter asked a member of staff what the fish was and the reply was barked back at her. When the soup and chips arrived, the soup was luke warm, as were the chips. It was very disappointing. I do, however, like the way we order - much better than standing in the queue.

Is anyone else having a problem booking lunch at Strikes Northallerton online? They wouldn't take my booking over the phone so I went on the website. Everything went swimmingly until I had to put in the number of guests and they wouldn't accept number 3......or any other number I tried. So I emailed and received no reply. Had lunch at the restaurant who had thought very hard about how to keep us all safe. Got a little stuck scanning with my phone - but help was at hand and I was away "with the mixer"The food came promptly and was very tasty - Thank you

We went here again today after going many times pre lockdown. We have always had great service and great food but today the team were even better. We ordered the Breakfast to share and had plenty to share between the two of us. Beautifully cooked and excellent service. The menu was easily obtained via my iphone and was simple to navigate and pay for. Dead easy. The place was spotless with loads of sanitizers everywhere. The toilets were immaculately maintained and the serving staff were lovely. We will certainly return and would suggest you ignore the rather critical reviews. Clearly people do not understand that all businesses are learning how to deal with a new situation they have never encountered before and are doing everything they can to keep people safe. Using new technology to order food is one eat and this worked perfectly at this Cafe for us today. A couple next to us did not use a smart phone but they were courteously dealt with, ordered via the server and certainly did not pay before they had had their meal. Somewhat different to the person who comments below from what I saw. Come on give these guys a break they were brilliant for us

We arrived at the Garden Centre for a coffee and were guided to our table and told to order and pay by using a mobile phone, which then we were told had to be an i phone, which neither of us own, and I was told my phone wouldn't work as it was a Samsung???. We could either download an app or wait for someone to take our order. We waited about 15 mins and were just about to leave when a young lady asked if we would like to order, and then I had to go to the till to pay .To our surprise we were not asked for any details, name contact number, postcode. I thought that when you went to a cafe/restaurant you had to leave your details so if anyone contracted Covid 19 everyone else could be contacted, Government Rules !!!!!We will not be returning in a rush and I am sure we will not be the only ones as there were more than us dissatisfied with the service

Don’t bother trying to support this local business unless you want to be spoken to rudely by a 15yr old. Also don’t buy a BBQ from them either gas or charcoal as they cannot supply the fuel for either! They will not sell you new gas cylinder without a part exchange.
