Having arrived at approximately 6pm on Friday evening, we sourced menus as not on tables, which were photocopies and stapled pages together, not a good first impression.

We met friends here and the pub was relatively quiet so getting served was quick and easy and you could have a conversation without shouting. There were enough staff on to serve. It is annoying that this pub has dearer prices than the Godfrey Morgan. It is not a lot higher but being part of a group they should have consistent price structure.

Visited 4 times . 3 out of 4 times I was in - I was ignored at reception. Despite being in line in long queue like everyone else , everyone were served in order but when my turn arrived - I was just in front of receptionist, he asked the guy behind me "what can I get for you" ? I was confused as I was skipped . I asked " can I order , I have queued ". Guy behind me told to receptionist- let her order I am fine . !!!????? I was more confused. Their reactions sounded like I disrupted the queue . I was so sure there was no one behind me when I first queue. I felt embarrassed as I was treated as a rude uncivilised mannered woman although I didn't do wrong. I observed the queue later , they served them in Order. This was not the first time in this shop. But similar happened in the past 2 times already here.Don't know why it happened to me 3 out of 4 visit . May be my Chinese face which already gave the impression of poor manner. Hate prejudice & being ignored.

We decided to have a curry here as it was curry night, my wife ordered the beef madras and a plain nan bread, I ordered a y flaming dragon curry and a garlic ban bread, we only had to wait 5 mins for our food to arrive, my wife's curry was very nice, my flaming dragon certainly lives up to its name, it's as hot as a phal curry, the staff are very freindly, this pub was so hot because the heating couldn't be turned off.My wife opened the door and used a fire extinguisher to hold it open, a horrible man came over and told my wife off for doing this, I asked if he worked in the pub to which he replied no, so I told him to mind his own business, the manageress came over and appolligised for his behaviour and said it was her job to tell us not his, thank you for sorting it out, I would highly recommend this pub for the curry night, will call again soon well done.

Only went in here for a drink, and first boo boo was there was no lime in my Stella when I'd specifically asked for, and paid for lime. I ignored the fact and my partner noticed lipstick on my glass. I had already drank a third of it before noticing it, and that put me off drinking the rest of it, so my partner offered to change it. I asked if they could put lime in the next one as requested, only to find they had just emptied the reminder of the last glass into a second glass was equally as dirty, but with lime added. Her wine glass was also the same, so we just left as there was no point drinking my remaining Stella that had been in 2 dirty glasses...

Has to be the most filthy Wetherspoons in Wales. We had been to the Royal Gwent and walked along the grotty road until we came to this Wetherspoons. Fag butts inside doorway, chavvy loud people, litter and menus on floor, uncleared tables and those that were, were unclean. Bar area up the stairs a bit better but mostly the usual drink all day lot up there. Cash only ........ Staff friendly, food at the poor end of Wetherspoons offerings - the superfood pasta was a very small portion and was cold' childrens cheesy pasta not too over microwaved and nice to see peas and broccoli in there. Steak and chips not bad. Newports a dirty horrible place (Commercial Street end) boarded up shops masses of for sale and to let signs, rubbish and gum everywhere, men loitering at shop doorways, so this Wetherspoons fits in well. Avoid it.

Not the cleanest pub I've ever been in, but the food, comfort, friendly staff and the good selection of ales and ciders certainly elevate it to a five star experience. In fact I'd go further and say of the fifty or so 'spoons I've been in this was the best meal I've had.The trouble with city centre pubs is the clientele especially during the day don't particularly look after their surroundings. That said the locals were very friendly.

Just like any JDW pub, it's a mixed bag serving the whole community. The Tom Toya is up the more scuzzy end of Commercial Street, and always feels a bit dark and sinister on the approach. The fact that entering the venue involves walking past quite a few vacant tables to the first floor bar adds to the daunting feel of the place. The food is always consistently average, and as microwave dispatch technicians go, there is certainly nothing wrong with the kitchen output. As with all spoons, the lines are always clean and the beer tastes alright - it is what it is.

Coming into Newport on the train for the Newport - Mansfield Football match the first impression on traversing the station frontage was that we were coming in to somewhere impressive. Unfortunately the stroll down Commercial Street was less so underwhelming with a colonnade of boarded up shops and a feeling of decline about the place. Even the Church was up for sale. The Tom Toya Lewis next door was down the end of Commercial and could be any Wetherspoons anywhere in the land. The frontage looks like its ready for a good spruce up and a coat of paint wouldn't go amiss. But we're not here for the aesthetics, just a few pre match liveners as this venue seems to be as near to the ground as you are likely to get. We are not wearing colours as we've heard the legendary Welsh "welcome in the hillsides" does not apply to away fans in Newport. But no. Its far to say we had no trouble whatsoever, the service prompt and drinks appeared well kept and, unlike some spoons we've been to on matchdays, the beers come in proper glasses and not the dreaded polycarbonates. In fact there was a surprising lack of any other football fraternity whatsoever, home or away in there at all. Curious. The good lady is recovering from a knee operation and had to use the lift to get from the entrance foyer level up to the second where the disabled toilets are. To access this, you have to press a buzzer. And wait for someone to come with the key. Then wait some more. Eventually someone arrives with the necessary and when asked the reasonable question as to whether the buzzer works, is informed that sometimes the pub is so loud they don't always hear the buzzer. Ah. The regular toilets are another floor up by the way.So once back, we order a chocolate sundae. It comes with the appearance that it was made with a catapult from some distance away - not the best of presentations. The young lady serving offers to change it but we say we'll live with it. The Curates Egg was good in parts and likewise, so we found this venue to be the same. In fact Uncle Tim could even consider renaming the pub as such and I'll waive him the marketing fees. The bar staff and service were fine and the couple of niggles we had could have happened anywhere. We haven't marked the pub down and didn't stay to dine so we can't fairly judge that side of the experience. Should Newport FC be fortunate enough to stay up then I'd have no scruples about coming here again next season. And hopefully some of the regeneration of the town going on either side of the footbridge shortcut to the desert landscape that was Rodney Parade will have a positive effect on the adjacent locality.

We have dined here many times in the past and have always enjoyed the warm, friendly and central location. On this occasion, the heating for the pub was not sufficient (It is December!) and the whole party became quickly cold, as did the food when it was served. We waited a long time to be served at the bar but when the food came, it was initially hot, tasty and appetizing. We always share a large dish and ask for a separate plate and cutlery set to be provided. This was accepted but took a while to appear. The waitress apologized for the delay but said that other food was ready to go as she went to collect the plate, meaning she had to serve them first. We had already been served and my Husband and I had to wait, which meant that the food went quickly cold in the coolness of the restaurant. This won't damage the relationship we have with Wetherspoons. You're still our Number 1 for dining out for your friendly staff, beautiful venues and affordable, tasty cuisine!

In short - yes, it is a Wetherspoons so you shouldn't expect fine dining; yes, it's not in the best location, though it's not exactly Sodom and Gomorrah either. What I would say is that the chips are the best I've eaten in many a Wetherspoons, and the frequent manager's specials mean you can generally get a proper plate of food for 4 or 5 quid.

Probably one of the most intimidating pubs i ever had the misfortune of entering....full of chavs and pikeys with an intimidating atmosphere!Didnt get to eat as within 5 minutes of sitting down we were approached by 3 yobs who accused us of sitting at their table...despite the fact there were no coats, bags left there and no one on tables nearby advised us.When I pointed out it didnt take all 3 of them to order and one could have 'kept their seats' I was accused of having attitude!!Wont be going back or frequenting any Wetherspoons ever again!!

I often pop into this Wetherspoons for a quick pint of ale. As a fan and supporter of real ales, I always find they have a great selection of local and international choices at reasonable prices. The food is ok for what it is, standard Wetherspoons fare.

Visited this pub whilst in Newport for a rugby match, this is a typical weatherspoons pub just outside the main shopping area of newport , service was friendly and got served at the bar almost immidiately, i also didnt have to wait long for the food to be served, the place looked clean and busy but not overcrowded, it also didnt seem to be taken over by loads of mums / dads etc and their screaming babies which is one of my pet hates in pubs, babies are welcome but they are asked to be kept on the ground level, and the ones that were in tended to be well behaved. would def visit again if I ever go back to Newport

I have been visiting this restaurant every Thursday since september as I attend university in Newport. The food is off good quality and value. The only downside is that it is always busy and sometimes the waiting till is quite long.

Great to find a place with such great food, good value and exceptional customer service so close to shops. Had the 14oz Aberdeen Angus steak which was brilliant. Will definitely visit again!

Although I would like to be selfish and keep the Tom Toya Lewis, the great prices, quality food and drink, pleasant professional staff and the welcoming atmosphere to myself... I have to say this is a fantastic Wetherspoon pub. Can't beat it

Meeting up with family here we decided to have a meal. There were 5 adults and two children and although our meals were varied we all enjoyed our meal and thought they were cooked well, and good value for money. Far superior to the Queens Hotel Wetherspoons in Newport town centre.

Really enjoyed a meal here on Wednesday. O.k, so they weren't the hugest portions but very nice nevertheless, and good value for money. Service was friendly and prompt and a nice relaxing atmosphere. My only criticism would be that some of the seating was dirty and worn.

Probably the worst Wetherspoon I have been in.It was untidy and not even busy, lots of food on the floor, felt grubby. The atmosphere was bad, couldn't wait to leave.Customers love to swear

Food is marginally better than others as is the selection of beers.Dining areas more condusive to pleasurable eating as pub is not usually as packed full as some.Staff always seem chirpy enough too,

This end of town pub has all you'd expect from JDW's plus it is obviously an ideal meeting point for young mums and their children - restricted to the ground floor for you stick in the muds.Good value food and a great selection of real ales - who needs more?

Although relatively local, this is a pub we don't visit that often. Tonight we were treated as if we come all the time!! Friendly and efficient service and 110% dog friendly. Daisy loved the chicken breast from the dog menu! Thanks guys!

Excellent venue for events, I can't comment on the rooms, service or the food as I set up for a party but the staff were very friendly. It has a split level stage area lost if seating.

My daughter & I are the fussiest eaters, the food is always spot on! Tried other places whilst they were closed for refurb and nowhere compared or even came close! Lovely staff, and their delivery drivers are thee loveliest, polite people, also the reason I always order with New Best Kebab! (Not to be confused with a similar named Kebab house close by, who I tried during the refurb and was not happy with)
