Went here for a weekday birthday treat, wasn’t disappointed. It’s a lovely quaint old pub, the owner is very friendly and the food is excellent. And the night we were there there was ladies morris dancing in the street outside, which added to the atmosphere. The half duck is amazing, never had so much meat on a duck (owner said they’re locally reared), so nice, worth going back just for that dish. Will be back soon.

We were recommended The Tom Cobley whilst on holiday in Devon, for good honest food and we were not disappointed in that respect. A friendly welcome and lovely food for 5 adults and 2 children. However, this was soured by the owner being unable to supply us with an itemised bill at the end of our meal and subsequently being overcharged by £100 to the penny. A little shocked at the cost, we paid the bill and went back to our car in the car park, where we worked out roughly what the bill should have been and we realised we had been charged approximately £100 extra. My husband then went back into the tavern to politely explain that we had been overcharged to be faced with an aggressive and rude response from both the owner and his daughter. He was told to ‘shut up’ whilst they worked out the bill again and miraculously they found out that it came to £240 and not £340. We absolutely understand that mistakes happen and we would have had no issue at all with a simple apology and the refund being processed but to be told to ‘shut up’ after politely advising them of the error and the lack of ANY apology whatsoever leaves a extremely bad taste in our mouths. We had a lovely welcome and honest home cooked food and if an itemised bill had been provided (as is provided in nearly all establishments, with the inclusion of required VAT information) then there would not have been any issue at all. £100 is A LOT of money to be overcharged without apology especially when we were polite about their error - politeness costs absolutely nothing and lack of it will only ever be detrimental to any business. Needless to say, we have spoken with our credit card company upon our return and currently await our £50 refund. If you decide to go and visit The Tom Cobley, enjoy the food but make sure you get an itemised bill - especially if you are not local and ‘holidaying’ in the area.

We had a wonderful stay at the Tom Cobley. The food was delicious- breakfast, snacks, and dinner. The steak and the fish were especially good. The rooms were lovely, too, with picturesque views and so homey. Located in the center of town, we could walk everywhere- to visit friends, to the park, and to the village shop. And, the owner and staff were friendly and accommodating at every opportunity. We definitely recommend a stay at the Tom Conley!

We visited by chance on a Sunday lunchtime and chanced a walk-in for lunch. Although the restaurant was fully booked, they accomodated us in the spacious Lounge with table service. Sunday is roast day and we had the choice of beef, turkey or a mix of both; accompanied by roasties, swede, carrots, cabbage, stuffing, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire pudding, cabbage and gravey...all were perfection! My photo proves the point. If you like great food, excelent beers and superb ciders, of which there are over 20, come and enjoy. A warm and welcoming Tavern not to miss.

What a great experience having a joint 80th and 50th birthday at the Tom Cobley. Roger, the landlord and his team were superb in every way. Real ales were glorious and the amount of exceptional real ciders was astonishing. We all had dinner and all 10 of us polished everything off with gratitude and full bellies. Wonderful food served by friendly and attentive people in relaxing surroundings, can’t fault it. Bedrooms were clean, beautifully furnished and lacked for nothing. Our border collie was allowed to stay and she felt comfortable immediately. Breakfast was a final surprise. I expected a good breakfast but this was beyond expectations. I highly recommend a visit and will certainly be returning in the summer.

A truly traditional tavern with truly traditional pub fare and truly traditional real ale and ciders. The very best of welcomes - run by an exceptionally good humoured, friendly and hospitable landlord with his family. Just as a pub should be. Proper job! So good we called in 4 times during our 6 days in Devon over Christmas - lunches and dinner all superb, but don't expect gastrogrub: this is a genuine, honest pub serving quality food (landlord was a butcher so knows his meat!) and the servings are generous. As the landlord said, "We don't do fancy!" But they do do fantastic ham and eggs, and perfectly cooked steaks, and more. A wide choice of real ales and ciders are their speciality, and they take pride in keeping and serving them at their best. This tavern is full of character, and characters (present and past, as the legendary Tom Cobley set off to Widdecombe Fair from here). One in a million. It has rooms too, which we haven't experienced but maybe next time .........

We precooked a Sunday lunch as we were stating in a nearby cottage. It was everything we expected it to be, given the comments in the Visitors Book. Communication was good, with our booking confirmed, for the three of us plus two small dogs. We arrived a bit early, but this didn't phase the young team. The roast dinners came out hot, with lots of freshly cooked vegetables. There was a good selection of mainly cold desserts. The landlord visiting our table to welcome us was a nice touch, as was the free children's roast we had ordered for our dogs. All in all it was a lovely meal, and a good village pub atmosphere.

After looking at some of the reviews on here my friend and I decided to try this pub. All the reviewers that rated the Tom Cobley Tavern as Excellent were spot on. What a find this place is. One get so used to pies being nothing more than a thin flaky lid on mediocre meat, the steak and ale pie here is in another league. It really is proper home-made best you could eat steak and ale pie. So much soft tender top quality beef is packed into the enclosed beautiful pastry surrounding it that I kept running out of superlatives whilst I was eating it. It was actually hard to decide what to select as there was so much on the menu that I fancied. The landlord is great, so chatty and he made a good fuss of my little poodle, likewise the lovely girl that was our waitress. You people within easy distance of this place - you are so lucky!

Everything a pub should be. First things first. The beer is excellent. Second the food is good. Third the service is exemplary. Multiple CAMRA awards sets your expectations, and it does not disappoint. The food is good “pub grub” not gastro pub. No extraneous music. (A per hate) Lots of awards on the walls, and deservedly so. The landlord is justly proud of his pub which has a very long history stretching back to the sixteenth century. Speaking of whom, he is friendly and chatty and clearly loves his job. The only thing wrong with it is I don’t live anywhere near it!

Too much for us after the biggest dessert I've ever had so they wrapped them up for later at home.

By the engaging owner. The moment you walk in you feel this is a proper and unpretentious village locals' pub. A Tuesday lunch time and it's heaving with diners and drinkers. Log fire, dog friendly. Vast range of real ales. The pub features in the Good Beer Guide, Good Pub Guide and Alastair Sawday to boot. The best steak and kidney pud notable for not having hard chewy base although a little extra filling would not go amis. Plenty of veg and extra gravy. English mustard in a pot and not a ghastly plastic sachet. The large restaurant area out the back is not the cozy space you can enjoy in the bar area. Wonderful school dinner puds but the spotty dick would have been a step too far

The Tom Cobley Tavern has won numerous CAMRA awards and its strength is the range of real ales available, all of which can be sampled before making a decision. Staff are very friendly and the landlord likes to have a 'chat' with everyone and make them feel welcome. We visited last weekend, I had scampi chips and salad, husband had the rack of ribs (the size of this filled his plate) and friends both had sirloin steaks. We ate an evening meal 5/8/19. We both really enjoyed the food, the service was lovely and all the staff were really friendly. I had the homemade pie and the pastry was exceptional. My wife had the burger, which was homemade as well, she really enjoyed her meal too. Wouldn't hesitate to visit this delightful family pub again

A very friendly and comfortable village inn. The service is impeccable and the food is delicious. They have a wide range of local real ales too. Highly recommended.

Phoned to make a booking and although they were obviously very busy (Friday night), they were very accommodating and squeezed us in.

Staying nearby on our holiday from Scotland and we were lucky enough to pop in for dinner tonight (Saturday). Excellent menu with a range of specials, wide range of beers and ciders and had several vegan options for our daughter. Quality was really high but topped by the fantastic service from all staff and the landlord. Superb!

I really can't believe how or why people write reviews when they can't get their facts right. I know this village pub, its my local and you always get a warm welcome from the landlord and staff whether its your first visit or hundredth. It appears from some of the reviews people just go out to find fault even when there is none to find and seem to enjoy running places down. Everyone that eats here are asked if everything is ok with the meal at least 3 times, by the waitress, bar staff and landlord, so why can't people speak up then so things can be rectified instead of tapping away on here? The Cobley make individual pies with just a pastry disc on top and are by no means small and are in fact £10.95 including chips and peas! The only chips I have ever had here have always been hot and crisp! If chips are overcooked they are usually hard and hollow not soggy!! If someone has a specific way of liking something then they should ask how it is made because not everyone makes things in the same way but with or without a pastry base it is still a pie! When asked at the bar when people pay if everything was ok, I have never heard anyone complain by saying there wasn't enough food, quite the opposite in fact - no-one ever leaves hungry cause portions are very substantial. The Tom Cobley is a small family run pub and cater very well for all, even walk-ins!. They arrange staffing to suit bookings so would have been prepared for a coach booking, its the people who do not ring and book that can cause issues but the Cobley will always try and please everyone that turns up and if there are a lot of bookings people are always advised of the expected wait before an order can be taken! There is also a large board outside advising customers to ring and book to avoid disappointment. Our village is not on a main road and difficult to just pass, so generally people have to make a special trip to get to us. Even us as locals give the pub a quick call if we fancy popping in for some food and then we are told of any big bookings and what time we can eat, then we can make our own mind up to go in or not.

Picking up the thread of the last two reviews surely it makes sense to book meals in advance wherever you go if you dont you must be prepared to suffer the consequences.

As a regular and local to this family run establishment I find some of the comments and reviews made about this place laughable. The pub is friendly, warm and welcoming, with many drinkers and eaters being frequent visitors. Whether they are returning for the food, drink or Rogers awful jokes or combination of them all, they are returning. The food is reasonably priced, traditional pub grub with a specials board on offer most days.

I can't understand why this place gets such good reviews. We arrived for lunch at 11.55 mid week but, weren't served until 13.30! A coach arrived at the same time we did but the place wasn't packed. Why encourage coaches if they can't handle the volume?

Had the most incredible breakfast on Sunday...local meats and really well cooked. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and brought lots of toast and were very kind. The pub is homely and immaculately clean. We were made to feel so very welcome after our drive from Cornwall. We run a cafe and know our breakfasts and these guys know what they are about! We had such a lovely time with our friends. Thank you Roger for everything.

Visited for dinner and was very impressed with the food .Warmly welcomed and reasonable prices .The only thing that spoilt it for us was unfortunately there were a group of people ,I presume local given they were on first name terms with the staff, who could not carry out a conversation with out using bad language .I can understand after a few drinks the odd word but this was every other word and made us feel very uncomfortable .We would have returned for another meal whilst in the area but dare not chance a repeat of the first visit .

A special lunch for a family of seven. An excellent meal quickly served. Ages ranged from 96 to 52. Menu offered a wide range of dishes, competively priced with suitable wines to accompany the meal. The Tavern has been a medal winner every year for at least the pasr fifteen years. Well worth a visit but do book ahaed to ensure you get a table!!

Myself and my partner recently stayed here for bank holiday weekend; we absolutely could not fault this place at all. Just perfect. The room was lovely, with amazing views and the service we received during our entire stay was faultless. The food was gorgeous, they offer so much choice for both breakfast and dinner and really go out their way to cater for you. The owners and all staff could not do enough to look after us and ensure we had a lovely weekend; They even got me a balloon for my birthday. All the little personal touches really made our stay perfect. We will definitely staying again. Highly recommend

What a lovely, friendly, welcoming little place. My husband I called in whilst staying near by. The landlord made us feel welcome as soon as we walked through the door. He recognised our welsh accent and we had a lovely chat. We had a meal, curry. Very tasty and good portions. Lots of choice of different ciders and gins as well as the usual drinks. We booked for the Sunday lunch. The Sunday lunch was lovely, the meat filled the plate and was cooked to perfection. Vegetables were brought to the table to serve yourself. Puddings and tea or coffee were included in the price. Couldn’t fault the meal, although I would have liked more vegetables. The landlord again went out of his way to go around the tables and chat to you. This place is a little gem. Make sure you book in advance though. It’s set in a lovely little village with thatched cottages, it does b&b; too apparently. Will definitely re visit when we return to the area

The Tom Cobley is a traditional pub that sums up the village. Very pleasant place with a very welcoming atmosphere. In some pubs with the food you get quantity or quality but at The Tom Cobley you get both, the food is of extreme high quality with mostly local ingredients. If you like gammon and fish and chips. this is the place for you. The gammon was expertly cooked and plenty of it, not like the local beefeater where you get egg or pineapple you get both and at least 10oz of gammon. Then I would love to know how the batter on the fish tastes so nice, certainly not like the usual grease you can get. Definitely recommend fish and chip Monday or the gammon.

We went for pizza the 1st evening while camping and then breakfast the following morning. Amazing food at a good fair price, loads of amazing bike gear and bikes. Lovely atmosphere 👌 great staff, everything cooked fresh.

Came in for Sunday roast and food was 10/10, best roast we have had for quite a while. What lacked was the service. We booked for 3pm and whilst we appreciate we entered at a busy time wrapping up peak time, service received wasn’t great from the off. One particular server seemed to be in quite a mood and was remarkably blunt “no” when we asked questions about getting some extra yorkshires (which we were a bit surprised the pork meal didn’t come with, but our fault for not reading the menu properly!) Plus someone seemed to think it was a great idea to loudly polish/sort out the cutlery at the bar, which was right next to our table, making conversation quite difficult and picked up by all 4 members of our party. Shame as food was amazing and would go back, but service lacked. 3pm bookings just as important as 12pm as all paying the same!

The restaurant was recommended to me and did not disappoint. First class, friendly service and excellent food. The online menu seemed limited but there were plenty of other options on the specials board.
