The Toll Bridge Restaurant & Bar in Dover

I called up last minute for a booking and we were so lucky to get a table on a busy Friday evening. I ordered the Bento box which was jam packed full of flavour and excellent quality meat and fish. My partner had the brisket which was also gorgeously cooked and tender! The spicy broccoli was a great addition to our dishes. Service was excellent and we felt well looked after by staff. They were able to offer recommendations of the menu and helped us choose our dishes! The price was spot on for the quality of food we ate. We will certainly be visiting again and will recommend to others. It would be great to see a drinks menu other than the wine list. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Went out for a family lunch yesterday for the first time at this restaurant. It was lovely great atmosphere great food and great service. Between us we had the fish and chips, pulled pork and the sea bream. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The service was second to none, nothing was to much trouble. I would thoroughly recommend this place and we will definitely be back!!

Staff were really friendly and helpful and it's a lovely atmosphere. However, we both ordered the mixed Grill (£30pp) what came out was laughable to the point we actually asked the waiter when the second one was coming out and then asked him to confirm with the chef that this was actually it.

Have visited the restaurant on many occasions, and have always been impressed by the standard of cooking and service Shane and his wonderful staff never fail to deliver, The Tollbridge is fast becoming a destination restaurant. We understand that exciting plans are in place for 2025. This was proven by a very successful NYE party, a great way to see in the New Year!

This is a cosy upscale pub-like restaurant. Our waiter was friendly and cheerful. The food was very good....so why only 3 stars? We decided to have cheescake for desert and asked for some ice cream with it. Our waiter told us that "the chef can be difficult and probably won't agree to give us ice cream". I said, you've got to be kidding and asked him to tell the chef I'd like ice cream with my cheesecake. Well, the cheescake turned upon without ice cream. The waiter was apologetic, however said the chef wouldn't do it and went on to say that recently he refused to give a customer a bowl of ice cream. This may seem like a small thing, however I find it incredible that a restaurant would spoil what otherwise would have been an excellent experience by refusing to sell us a spoonful of ice cream... EXTRAORDINARY! I therefore can't give them more than 3 stars...

This was my first time eating at The Toll Bridge as I am out of the area and I had heard a lot about it from local friends. We were a large group of people and the food was just superb! Between our group we had the Korean chicken wings which were apparently favourites of our friends and they did not disappoint. I have modest expectations for any chicken wings but these were next level tasty! We had so many, they are definitely recommended. I then had the Fried Texan Chicken burger that had delicious mustard mayo (and from someone who isn’t usually a fan of mustard that’s saying something). Along with the rosemary fries the whole meal was excellent. Someone else ordered the smoked pork loaded fries which again were just so full of flavour in the intensely smokey taste. Shane and the team really have a special thing going on at The Toll Bridge and a visit is highly recommended.

We have just had what is probably the best Sunday lunch we have ever had out. Lots of food cooked beautifully. We will definitely be back

We booked and paid for nye a few weeks before but on the night Toll Gate halved the price and wouldn’t give us a refund!! Very unfair. Not a place we will go back to!

Sunday Roast with kids. Visited yesterday 1st of December.Most highly recommendable. Excellent service, easily accommodating food preferences for 4 little sweet devil's. We ordered roast dinner for everybody. We tried smoked pork shoulder & the brisket of beef. Full flavour meats ( smoked and roasted ) came with lots of trimmings, roast potatoes, mash, swede, cabbage, coliflower cheese, vichy carrots ( delicious ) and a massive Yorkshire pudding, apple sauce on the side for the pork. For dessert we had cookies and cream. Chocolate ganash, almost wet biscuit, chunks of chocolate, ice cream topped with milk foam... Wow and not too sweet. Quite large portion for adults & perfect for children. Only £19.50 for 1 course for adults. The place was busy but we luckily booked in advance. We have been before & we will return again.

This is a wonderful meal! Everything on my plate was prepared so well, exceeding my expectations. Pork brisket was tender, mash potatoes was probably the best I’ve ever had and the grilled cabbage was crunchy and juicy, not like the usual soft and soggy ones. The dessert was spot on, too. I loved it!

Visited with friends yesterday and we all ate from the very reasonably priced set lunch offer. The Mackerel Taco and Winter slow roasted Pork Shoulder were superb. Beautifully presented, incredible value for money and great service too. I would definitely recommend and will not hesitate to visit again.

Lots of pretty tasty grilled and fried food on the menu. Not extraordinary food but decent. Great service. Set in a cute part of sandwich with outdoor seating and indoor seating.

It's okay, I've eaten in 20 + smoke houses across the country and this is on the bottom of the list. Anything smoked is absolutely drowned but the most thick Smokey flavour. It's literally like eating a bonfire. They really need to change the wood they are using to smoke with. Chicken wings was one of the best chicken wings I've eaten. But anything smoked is awful. Wouldn't swap anything neither and it is terribly over priced for the amount of food you get. Menu made my mouth water but that over the top smoked flavour really did make me feel sick after a few mouthfuls. Wouldn't go back

1st time here , slightly disappointed with few elements. Waited a while for 1st drink and slightly longer for a food menu (they don’t have enough apparently), Hot plates arrived shortly after our order was placed , yet the main event came 20 min later (acceptable time ), but obviously by now the plates were cold The big combo sharer was disappointing as 1 sausage , 3 ribs , and the short rib wasn’t tender and too charred , lamb ribs advertised but pork given , inbetween drinks were slow . Quite expensive for what we had , would not rush back

Amazing service by Chevonne and the set lunch we had was out of this world. Would highly recommend the Mackerel ramen both myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful. What a lovely way to spend a Thursday lazy afternoon.

Was looking forward to meal here after good reviews from others. Left a bit underwhelmed. We have the smokehouse share combo. When served to other waiters took time to explain meat on platter. For some reason was not explained to us. Part of the platter is lamb rib. Not cut I have had before and would avoid again. Very Fatty and more or less not edible. Feed back to waiter how said they had had similar feed back in past. Yet chefs do remove and they don't warn customer which I think they should. As result did get refund of round of drinks. Not sure if I would eat her again or not.

Had a wonderful roast here today! I had the smoked turkey and my friend had the smoked beef brisket- both were melt in the mouth delicious. I’ve never had meat taste that good! The service was fantastic, brilliant waitress, didn’t wait long for food or for the bill at the end. Can’t fault it.

A great discovery in Sandwich, along the canal, outdoors in summer. The dishes were delicious, the grilled meats very good (especially the burgers), several vegetarian options (the risotto was a treat) as well as a menu for children, the waiters pleasant and good advice! There was a bit of a wait time but it was worth it. We will definitely come back on our next trip to Sandwich!

Nice bar/restaurant, great when you can sit outside and watch the world go by. Had the Sunday lunch, beef brisket was great and veggies really nice. Horseradish sauce was like mayo (unless it was mayo 🤔) Reasonable price for food but draft beer at the bar are limited and London prices.

recently had the misfortune of dining at Toll Bridge Restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. I opted for the smoked and grilled combo for two, expecting a hearty and satisfying meal. Unfortunately, the reality was far from it. The combination of smoked and grilled meats was the main attraction, but what arrived at our table was a disappointment. The meat was overcooked and dry, lacking any semblance of tenderness or flavor. It was clear that the kitchen had either misjudged the cooking time or simply didn't care about the quality of their product. To make matters worse, the sides that came with the meal were equally underwhelming. The portion sizes were alarmingly small, making it seem like an afterthought rather than a deliberate attempt to provide a well-rounded meal. The sides lacked flavor and texture. For the price we paid for the combo, I expected a much higher level of quality. Instead, we got a lackluster meal that failed to impress. The overcooked meat and disappointing sides left us feeling unsatisfied and underwhelmed.

I was there for a wedding so we had a lovely time.The staff were great always happy to help and all smiling.foor was lovely and as I am a celiac the floor catered for me was fantastic with no cross contamination so no side effects the next day. A lovely and friendly place to go

Food good but we were unable to share a £25 main mixed grill main at lunchtime despite there being no lunch options. There is a £10 plate charge which took cost to £35. Ended up with 2 starters for £14 instead. That means they ended-up losing £11 & 2 future customers. Great venue though & the lone waitress was doing a valiant job. Additional note: The owner was good enough to reply to my review..however to suggest that you would prefer certain meals not to be shared is strange business-practice given that we spent less for lunch as a result of the sharing policy. I understand that there are overheads but it really should be down to the customer who should be able to decide if they'd like to share.

My partner and I recently visited and were truly impressed. We were taken care of from the moment we walked in and our food was absolutely delicious, also very well presented. My partner had steak and I had the buttermilk burger, we also had a lovely bottle of house white. I would thoroughly recommend The Tollbridge.

The service is good. The food is among the worst in Kent. Over-salted everything. The worst chips and peas. Appalling meat. Do not eat here unless you are a foodie masochist.

Incredible food in the heart of Sandwich. We had steak et frites au poivre, smoked chicken and the most unbelievable Sunday roast!! We shall come back to Sandwich just to have lunch here again. Thank you

The burgers were fine. Nothing special. The fish and chips was appalling. Over seasoned fish. All you could taste was salt! If we hadn't of been there with friends and not wanting to cause a fuss we would of sent it back and refused to pay! The toilets were dirty and the whole restaurant could hear the chef swearing in the kitchen. Messsage to the chef and owner: Go back to Wetherspoons.........

The amazing Bao bun and mussels.... delicious. Surprisingly quiet for a Saturday night. Not sure why they are stacking chairs in front of the river view - could begin to need some tlc before long.

Best family Sunday lunch out in ages. Amazing varied menu with the classic roasts meats and a selection of innovative dishes to start with. Turned up without booking for 6 people and got us a nice table by the window. Very proffesional front of house with Maddie, Tom and Lily looking after us and the kids. Bao Buns and other bits to start with and roast beef and bento Box for mains. Crazy good beef and a pork rib that melted from the bone. Try the tiramisu for dessert if you never been in Italy. Also great value for money £25 for 2 courses ( regular hungry ) £32 for 3 ( XL hungry ) We will definitely return in the summer to eat outdoors. Many thanks to all of you. We'll done

One of my favourite restaurants! The food in here is absolutely incredible and really good value. I have eaten here on numerous occasions over the past 6 months and every time the staff are friendly and the food is just insane.

Maybe my expectations were unrealistic but a disappointing experience. Smokehouse cooking with an Asian twist; impossible to disappoint me but sadly it did. The welcome was a bit formal and didn't help in an empty restaurant. The friendly nod from the chef was noticed and much appreciated. The decor is tasteful and empathetic to the characterful historic building. The menu is exciting. The Korean chicken wings were amazing. It set the scene and made me excited, as a starter should. It was served in a beautiful 'bibimbap' style stone bowl and the fingerbowl was a nice touch. I needed it. The wings were that good. The southern fried whole chicken breast burger with an Asian slaw sounded promising. Not what I would have ordered if I came with a group. There are far more exciting options to share. Then the disappointment. The breast was terribly greasy and the slaw a bit tired. Serving it on an undersized plank didn't help. A tired trend I never cared for especially after I saw beautiful ceramic plates coming out of the kitchen. Next visit will be with friends and different dishes so I am going to remain optimistic.

We went as a party of 4. Three of us are vegetarian, we were celebrating my mums 84th birthday. We had been before and there were usually good veggie options. Looked at the menu and could see nothing. At that point we were thinking of just having chips and never going back. However how wrong could we be. Explained to the lovely friendly waiter about being vegetarian. He went away and came back with some adaptations to the menu, which we were more than happy with. The chef came out and explained that it was a bit of a difficult time at the moment, and to keep an eye on the menu as they were doing more veggie stuff again. We were also given some wonderful rosemary bread and smokey dip and mac and cheese side to make up for it. In the end we had a brilliant time and the food was absolutely delicious, could not fault it. The atmosphere was lovely, helped by the brilliant friendly staff. I am looking forward to going back there, though I will check the menu to see the veggie bit is back on track. Would certainly recommend the place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our family meal here and the service was friendly, welcoming and efficient. The menu was rather limited, especially for vegetarians/vegans and a bit heavy on salt. The food was of good quality and nicely presented, albeit a little pricey.

Turned up with no booking and they made space for 7 of us. We had not looked at any reviews but not disappointed. The sharing platter for two was more than enough and the other dishes ordered for children very generous. Not sure about the cocktails but the beer was OK. Staff very good and did not bother us every few minutes. Overall a great place to eat. Plenty on the plate.

Was not impressed.. paid £20 for a burger and chips which was tiny so tiny it come out in a little basket, I genuinely thought it was a kids meal. Service was not as good as times I've been before. Probably wont be back, which is a shame as I have loved this place in the past.

A beautifully situated quayside restaurant in Sandwich. A friendly atmosphere to enjoy fine food and drink. Staff were polite and attentive to our every need. Starters were a generous size with the spiced smoked hummus and pate enjoyed by my partner and I. The smoke house menu and Bento box has a rich deep taste without overpowering the rest of the dishes. Well worth a visit, and we'll be making it a destination during the summer to enjoy the terrace in better weather.

A disaster really, a particularly slow service, we asked at 40 minutes how long the food would be and was told it was “just being plated”, 30 minutes later it arrived, but one meal missing which we were blamed for, this one arrived 15 minutes later. Roast potatoes have been roasted and kept warm for so long that there was hardly any potatoes left in the middle, the meat was tender but tasteless, the greens were very undercooked and cold, the puree that the food was balanced on was cold. Very unsettling to hear the shouting in the kitchen, really doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Wouldn’t be able to recommend this place!

The Toll Bridge has had a few changes of late, but last nights food was amazing. A generous portion of delicious meats, with fries for £26...great value. Service was good too and we will return!

Never again after the foul language used by who we could only presume was the chef to his staff. we could hear every word, then to see a very young lad appear who must still be at school who looked quite scared and tearful did not make for a nice time. Felt very sorry for the young man. I wouldn’t treat anyone with such disrespect especially a youngster who is probably wanting a bit of pocket money. No need to treat anyone like that. As a grown man the chef should be ashamed of himself, I wouldn’t recommend eating or working in this place if that’s how they feel customers want to spend there time (hearing the abusive behaviour) and I certainly wouldn’t encourage anyone I know to take a job here if the chefs bullying behaviour is a reflection to those in charge. Needs new management or some staff training and a read of employment laws as to how you are supposed to treat employees. Disgraceful.

Great sunday roast! Walked in without reservation but could be seated. Portions are filling, all ingredients were fresh and tasty. Recommended!

Absolutely delicious food! The prawn and avocado roll is mouthwateringly superb! The brisket is to die for - I can’t stop thinking about it! They have a new Restaurant Manager and the service was excellent. Can’t wait to visit again.

We went to The Toll Bridge to celebrate our anniversary and what a treat we received! Best meal of the year in a restaurant. We started sharing a prawn and avocado Vietnamese style roll. I had a snack also of prawn lollipop. Big tiger prawns coated in breadcrums served with mustard and spicy sauce. After a glass of prosecco we went for the sharing board for 2 people. What a dish to share!! A selection of the best meats from this smokehouse , brisket, pulled pork, short rib, pork ribs, marinated turkey with bits of smoked roasted garlic and delicious foccacia bread around it. On the side 4 dishes, homemade pickles, bean salad, coleslaw and we swapped the mash for chips. Absolutely stunning flavours. I asked the manager Mili and everything is made from scratch and smoked in house. The lady that served us, Chloe, made sure our dinner was really special with an attentive service and a comp hot chocolate at the end. Thank you all for an anniversary meal to remember

This was our first time visiting Sandwich. We were looking for a restaurant which did both Fish and Meat options. The food was amazing. We shared a starter which was really tasty. Prawns, avocado and salad in a rice paper parcel. The flavours were amazing. We moves on to our main course. My wife had the surf and turf and I had the mixed grill and again absolutely perfect. Desert was apple crumble cheesecake (really tasty) and camambert - great flavours... I don't remember the last time I went into a restaurant and had three erfect courses. Highly recommended!!!

Absolutely stunning venue . The staff are amazing and great fun . Banter was great , very helpful professional and join in for a laugh at the same time. Couldn't do enough for us . As for the food ...WOW........ possibly some of the best mouth watering delicious food I have ever tasted . 5 star all day long . The food was a master piece and tasted even better . Mouth is still watering days after . I can't wait to return . Outside seating with heating . Very clean and cosy . Can't praise this place enough . Theve nailed it .. little pricey but worth every penny in all aspects . One of the nicest places in town . Very welcoming friendly and will be visiting again

A spur of the moment decision which turned into a very rewarding dinning experience. Another surprising plus was the number of dishes that could be served gluten free, almost the entire menu. Exceptional good food with equally positive, cheerful staff. Absolutely would go back and would recommend if the area make a detour and check out this restaurant I wam sure you will not be disappointed. The rib eye steak dishes were delightful.

Absolutely fab. Great service they really care about you. Food was unbelievable, we got the bento boxes where you get a bit of everything and all of it was completely delicious. Sat in the little garden soaking it up by the river. Would 100% recommend, will definitely be back if we’re in the area again.

Was really looking forward to spending our 10 Year Anniversary at the Toll Bridge, called in advance to try and book an nice table and tell them the reason for the visit. The restaurant itself is very nice and we were given a window seat and a little sign saying happy anniversary. The service from the upstairs waitress was awful. Being served by someone that couldn’t care less if you was there or not. Waited ages for drink and to order. We ordered the T-bone (£80) with 3 sides. The waitress did not write anything down or ask how we wanted the steak cooked. An hour and a half later (after being told numerous times the food would not be too much longer) the chef comes to cut the steak at the table and spends the whole time apologising about the wait and that the steak was not cooked properly, he then went on to offer complimentary sides but we told him that we had already ordered 3 and they arrived 15mins after the steak. No where for the steak to go on table as the waitress had not taken the menus or any old glasses or plates. We end up just wanting to leave after several apologies from other waitresses, we got the bill of just under £100 for steak and drinks they didn’t charge us for the late sides we left on table. The review is not about wanting anything other than for the owner to now what horrible experience we had and at no point during or after has anyone tried to resolve any issues (I emailed you before this review to ask your opinion on the situation) I’m sure this is normally a nice place to eat but for us a very arrogant and dismissive attitude, also for a £80 steak 20/30% was just fat. Very disappointed in the whole experience
