Number 399 I enjoyed a thoroughly enjoyable meal from the time-limited game menu. My starter was an interesting contrast of pan fried pheasant, crispy pancetta, salads, and blue cheese. My main was pâté-topped Venison Rossini on ciabatta with greens, very interestingly prepared roast potatoes and a port source. Heavenly. The standard menu is a great selection, too, although I was lucky to have the game menu option on this visit.

A very visually welcoming establishment with a good sized car park, an outside deck tables and seating are with a large beer garden grassed slope. Good wheelchair access and dog friendly areas in the main dining room. The staff are very attentive and are eager to please and make sure you are happy with your meals and drinks. We had the Sunday Roast tripple which is a slice of each meat on the carvery, it has an extra charge but I can say the meal was more than worth the small charge. They served plenty of steamed vegetables for the 3 of us. I normally have a J2O but the Hartridges orange and passion fruit they serve seems less watery and has a stronger taste than J2O so now I will have to see who stocks it in Lincolnshire! We are staying locally and unfortunately we have to go home to Lincolnshire in the morning, but I highly recommend giving the Throckmorton a visit and will mention this in my review for the Windmill Barns Accessible Lets where we have been staying for a week. Thank you for the brilliant meal and making us feel welcome. All the best for the future to Sally and Dave and the team. Our number was 226.

We went to the Throckmorton at 5 pm today on the off chance that we could get something to eat as we had, had a long journey home, and we were hungry. They were able to give us a table but wish now that they hadn't. My husband had the beef which was advertised as pink or cooked, and he wanted it pink. Apparently, there was no pink left and was told it would come cooked, which was not a problem as we were hungry, but we didn't realise there was a third choice on the menu that wasn't advertised and that was inedible. The beef was so rubbery that he couldn't eat any of it. I had the lamb, which was advertised as pulled lamb shoulder, not crispy lamb shoulder. Our daughter in law then had the chocolate mousse for desert, which was like sand paper it was so grainy. We did complain about the food (it was a fixed overpriced menu as it was Fathers Day) as and when the staff came over but were never given any apology for the state of the food. The bill came too £160 for 4 mains, 4 desserts, and 4 drinks £160.

I stayed here on Sunday night after attending the MX5 rally at Compton Verney. It was easy to find, and when I arrived I was met with a warm welcome. Everything was explained, such as check out, breakfast times, residents entrance etc. I settled in my room, HUGE bed. I came down and had a few pints before having my dinner. Everything was hot from start to finish, a bit of a delay for my main course, but these things happen. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic, with coffee being fresh, not the sort that sits and stews. Upon leaving I was thanked for my stay. The whole stay was pleasant and everything was clean. If I am ever in the area again, I will stay here.

We visited this past Friday and the food was excellent, all tasted fresh with delicious flavours, however we wouldn’t return, the service we got wasn’t attentive at all, and we found the staff very rude. I hate to comment on anyone’s appearance but the manger wasn’t dressed appropriately. This could be a fantastic pub but the service doesn’t match the rest of the place unfortunately.

Mothers day experience. Nice ambience, nice pub. Had a table for 6, were seated and ordered drinks. Within minutes the young lady serving came back with the manager asking my son for id. We openly said he was a couple months off being 18 but we stated that in most places he is legally entitled to have a pint of beer if having a meal with adults. But unfortunately not here, they said it was at the discretion of the manager and here it wasnt permitted, good start! We ordered our meals which we hoped would be of a high standard due to the prices here. A few of us had pork belly bites for starter which were overcooked and felt like you were chewing bones. On our mains we asked for pink beef as stated on the menu but were told they had none left, so we had to have it cooked through. When it came the beef was tasteless and there were only 2 slices of it, with a dried out yorkshire pudding and a few overcooked rock hard roast potatoes, all of it luke warm. The only thing that was hot and fresh was the steamed vegetables. My partner had the sea bass with linguini, 2 tiny pieces of sea bass on a bed of overcooked pasta. So unfortunately we booked here due to reading positive reviews but the meal did not live up to our expectations. We informed the staff of our issues and were given 2 free desserts! Off a £170 bill, im sorry but thats just not good enough. Maybe they were just too busy and struggled to get the food out to their usual standard being Mothers day. But I certainly wouldnt rush to come back sorry.

The food was good and the front of house person was attentive. However after we had been served our mains she must have gone on her break! We had to ask to have our plates taken after we had clearly finished eating. This took about 15 minutes then we had to ask for a dessert menu and this took another 20 minutes. By now we had decided to go home and have the port and cheese there.

Stopped here on Saturday 14th Oct 23, as we were attending a wedding locally. Called in earlier than the book-in time, just to see how far from the venue we were & what arrangements we might need to make for collecting the key, which might have been quite late that evening. Staff extremely helpful, & although the room wasnt ready (which was toally understandable) they provided us a room key, showed us the out of hours access, in case we were very late & offered to put our bags in the room if we wanted to leave them. We had a quick drink & saw some lunches being served, which looked lovely. When we returned, the room was excellent, had everything we needed & more, had a great night's sleep on a comfy bed & in the morning had a fabulous breakfast, served by friendly staff. All round a great experience & would happily recommend. Grant & Wendy.

Stayed overnight en-route to south coast. Initial impression was that it was like a toby, harvester, brewer’s fayre, with check-in being done in the restaurant. Room was clean, tidy, and comfortable. Had dinner in restaurant, again ok, nothing special, one of our main courses - a chef recommendation - was pretty poor, but in fairness, they took it off bill. Staff were all very nice, and helpful. Outside patio needs a good clean, overflowing ashtrays was poor. Also thought it was surprising no tvs in bar. Reading other reviews, sounds like food quality has lost its way a bit. Hope they can get back to where it should be. Overall, acceptable for price, but would chose elsewhere next time.

Five of us went for an evening meal been many times before and it’s been very good. Starters were fine no problem. Four of the main courses were good and enjoyed. However mine was poor, I had gammon. It look like the end bit, a left over. It was far to thick at one end and far to thin at the other and grisly. The chips were under cooked, woolly and pale. I’ve had gammon before which has been good but this was poor. Why didn’t I complain , because one of our party had just lost his wife and I didn’t want to put further stress on him. The place is great and the staff were very good. This has certainly put me off gammon but not the pub. Here’s to better times.

As soon as we was seated, we had waited about 10 minutes for a drinks order, and when our waitress “BEX” was taking our order, she was a bit rude and didn’t seem like she wanted to be there. She wasn’t very attentive and when we had finished our meals, we waited a while for our plates to be taken away and for our bill. The food wasn’t that bad. I had the fish and chips which was lovely and cooked right. My partner had the buttermilk chicken burger and was disappointed -> it was very soggy and wasn’t appetising at all. It was great that we were able to book an outside table. Nice greeting with the usual Covid speech about sanitation stations and one way systems. All great. Sadly half our table wasn’t in the shade. An elderly man and a child with us so we asked to be reseated. Initially this looked to be an issue until a family heard our plight and were leaving so we gladly took their table. The staff sanitised the table (not seats or outdoor cushions) and we moved. The remaining meal was brilliant. Our child had her food served first - which was nice quality) and our food arrived promptly and was really good. We all enjoyed the food. Fish and chips, faggots and a nut roast. The staff were the most outstanding. Really friendly, nothing too much trouble and we would return.

I have to say it was better than ever. The staff all did exceedingly well in following post Covid protocols ands the guests were all kept safe. We’re booked in again for next week, can’t wait!!

Part of a Post-Christmas lunch party, seating layout was across the dining area, such that there was no way one of those booked could have sat and rated. Service not bad but food very ordinary and over-priced.

Distinctly average in all aspects with the exception of the barman who was friendly and efficient. Food was of poor quality, undercooked fries and fish and overly long wait. To top it off they miscalculated our bill. There are plenty of better places to visit than this within a 5 mile radius - very overated indeed.

Twelve of us booked for dinner on Saturday evening and ten of us then stayed overnight. The meals were really lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and there was a wide choice of tasty breakfasts. We would definitely recommend this beautiful cosy pub and hotel.

Sunday lunch with a group , pre ordered. Our names and what we had ordered waiting for us- impressive. Staff very friendly and efficient. We hadn't pate to start which was very good ( but note for the chef - all of us who had it said we needed more toast - two small bits not enough ) . Main course very good. I had roast pork and lots of it and thick along with crackling. Huge Yorkshire and roast potatoes plus a big dish of mixed vegetables. Waitress asked everyone if they wanted any sauces etc. They came quickly in individual dishes. We didn't have a dessert ask we were full but those who did said they were very good. We will return. Well done all.

As a party of four we have been to the Throckmorton many times and the pub food has always been ok but today it was very disappointing. My husband asked for the whitebait+calamari+prawns but he actually just received whitebait. My friend and I had Duck Parfait with Apricot Chutney. The parfait was tasteless and the plum chutney was more like a plum curry. My friend and I had the salmon en croute which tasted as though it had been heated in the microwave and the pastry was therefore soggy, the vegetables were very undercooked as were the chipped potatoes. I left most of my main course. The bill came to over £90 for two courses for four plus coffee for three. I felt as though we might as well given the money away. Maybe the usual chef was off duty but the meals were definitely below standard, sorry, could do better.

This was my first time to visit although my wife had been before with her female friends, we were welcomed by a very friendly smiling young lady dressed in black who showed us to a table. We opted for the small plates to start and ordered Korean sticky pork ribs, Cajun battered calamari and mini lamb koftas each plate came with different dip. Calamari are notoriously difficult to cook however ours were cooked to perfection, the koftas tasted as they should and the Korean ribs just fell off the bone. My wife had the generous sized salmon en croute which came with leeks, small green beans and potatoes. I had the steak burger (OMG!) I have eaten burgers at various places but this has got to be one of the best ever, the size of an oversized tennis ball though I hasten to add not in yellow or white. It was cooked perfectly and came with a generous green dressed salad and skin on fries

Second year running we went as a group. 7 course taster menu, piper, poems, great atmosphere. Good service, great host. Next time, put gravy in a jug, shouldn’t have it on haggis to be authentic.

This is one of our favourites in the area, the menu is very broad and you always fancy something from it! You can tell the quality of the food is very good and everyone is lovely. We go there often and is usually busy in the weekends, make sure you book in advance.

We have stayed at The Throckmorton on numerous occasions and have to say that it’s our favourite ‘go to’ place for a lovely meal, good service, friendly staff and a warm welcome!...Lovely to sit by the open fire in the wintertime or to sit on the decking in the summer at the rear of the pub, with its wonderful views over the fields.. The rooms are spotless, the beds are really comfortable, and the full English breakfast is the best!....what is there not to like!..

We met some of our family for lunch on 6 December. We were given a very warm welcome and excellent service throughout. We all had Christmas fayre, the butternut squash soup was lovely as was the homemade duck parfait. The main meals were also excellent, turkey came with all the trimmings and the beef bordelaise was very tasty. Our sister asked for extra vegetables (in preference to potatoes) and more gravy and the waitress promptly and willingly brought these to the table. Three of us managed to make room for a delicious desert. We had a great time, as always. Never having had a bad meal yet. Just as we were leaving, children from the local school came to sing carols which was lovely and a real bonus.

A fascinating pub that we were told was once owned by Henry VIII and given to Catherine of Aragon on their divorce. Then owned by Magdalene College Oxford for hundreds of years. It’s certainly old with flagstone floors, lots of panelling and a no longer accessible secret passageway to the church across the road. Top that with decent beers, a short freshly cooked menu and friendly service
