Looked lovely from the outside and the right hand side of the bar was lovely. We were soon told to move to the next side as it was being closed. Staff were not helpful even when we tried to pay. When we tried to get the fire going we told to not touch the fire we’re not liable. I suggest you put some signs up if customers are not allowed to touch the fire. Having been advised that we should ask a member of staff to get the fire going, we would have if paying for a drink wasn’t so difficult in the first place. Won’t be going back.

We came for Sunday lunch, not great, food sort of ok. I've had better roasts at school. Pork cold. Over salted, rubbish roast potatoes. Needs additional heating, fire roaring but definitely not enough. Reading past reviews, I'm not writing anything new, we were there at 1.30, already they had run out of roast chicken. Had to ask 3 people for our sauces!!! I can see it's a glorious spot on a warm day, with a drink at packet of crisps. But we were there for Sunday lunch on a wet and windy day.

Visited as group of 9 last Saturday. Was very disappointed with the quality and size of dishes. Ridiculously overpriced for what you got. I tried to order the roast beef ciabatta but was told they had run out and so ordered the halloumi and flat bread instead…This was covered in chill sauce and another mayonnaise type sauce making it sodden. It lacked any freshness salad or herbs and was not appetising atall and was £14. Two adult scampi and chips were child sized portions and were £15 each. Both male adults left hungry. Ribs with unappealing dry salad £19 Fish and chips very bog standard at £17. The tables were grubby and the place has markedly gone downhill since previous visits in years prior. I can only assume ownership/ management has changed? The menu options were poor and overpriced and not appetising atall. It was a lot quieter than previous visits and this explains why. Great location especially in the summer but unless standards pick up by some way I wouldn’t eat there again!

What a shame. Great location, but the rest let it down. Food was mediocre. Pub and food was cold, seemed to be run by what looked like students with no service skills. Felt like a stop off place, not where you'd go for a family Sunday roast. Went to another pub for cheese board coffee's and decent deserts. Would not recommend.

Fingers crossed they can find that new head chef. We had the Sunday Roast. Beef was overcooked and dry. Potatoes lacked any texture and the Yorkshire puddings had too much texture as they’ve been sat under a hot lamp for what must have been hours. It all then came swimming in gravy. At £17 for a main, it needs to be good and this missed the mark. It’s a charming pub and would be a good stop for a pint and chips but nothing more at this stage. We did make our thoughts known in person.

Great atmosphere, great staff, average food First time visiting this pub having driven past its great location next to the canal many times. Absolutely perfect pub location. Nice atmosphere inside with a lit fire, friendly patrons and welcoming staff. I enjoyed the quirky layout and cosy tables you may be able to grab if it’s quiet. Would visit here regularly for a drink if I was local to the area. Despite several surrounding tables also having food this Monday evening the dining experience didn’t equal the good experience of having a pint. Myself and other table guest ordered our meals at the same time but separately. The delivery of said meals was long enough apart that it sadly meant that I received my meal as my friend finished theirs. The portion of mushy peas was small enough that I had to query if there had been a mistake. Kindly the staff gave me a larger portion. Unknown if there had been a mistake or if the single spoon of peas was the standard serving. Don’t misinterpret my review, I would happily return but probably wouldn’t have the fish and chips again. I would clarify at the bar that I was intending to eat at the same time as other orders to the same table if I were to have food here again. One thing that I always have a small sigh about is these beautiful old pubs with characterful uneven floors do insist on four legged tables that wobble even if you were to have an Argos catalogue jammed under one of the table feet. Swap the bases for those with three legs for pity’s sake. One sure way to distract from a nice meal is to have the commitment of holding your foot on a table leg. I will say that had I had mentioned this to the staff I don’t doubt that they would have been pleased to help, they appeared attentive throughout the evening. Overall - look forward to returning for drinks in the future. Room for improvement regarding the dining experience, but food quality was good enough that I’d still recommend new patrons to order and make an opinion for themselves. Landlord - feel free to reach out if you feel this review is unfair. I would be happy to hear your feedback.

Used to come here a lot and the food went right downhill. Thought we'd try it again and nothing has changed, the food is still terrible. I ordered the dirty fries (which always used to be excellent), but the chilli was actually a cut up tastless burger with no more than a spoonful of chilli sauce and 2 beans!! My daughter had the chicken gyrios which was absolutely awful - a wrap with a few chips inside, the same chilli sauce thrown over it and awful salad. They used to do this dish in a lovely way, not now though! Also £8 for 6 halloumi fries is overpriced and the drinks are extortionate. No salads on the menu either. This used to be a fantastic pub with a lovely venue. Sadly, I recently visited with family, both service and food have taken a dive. We reserved a table and were placed on a tiny table (could barely fit plates for 4). Staff didn't know menu or drinks. Venue could not accommodate simple requests e.g. wouldn't switch a vegetable on a child's meal when they clearly stocked the vegetable on a roast dinner. We were told all food is pre-portioned, preventing switching peas for carrots on a meal. Meals were clearly pre cooked and very mediocre. Based on our service and experience I would not recommend visiting with family, young children or those with specific dietary needs.

We originally went to the pub over 10 years ago and found it was lovely, however would never go again, or recommend it too! My husband decided to surprise me and my 3 kids, and took us for mothers day last weekend. The road leading up to the carpark was closed, which wasn't the pubs fault but did mean we had to go 10 minutes around. We got there and it was absolutely freezing inside. We were the only people in the pub the whole time. The service was very slow and inattentive. Our food came, and as you can see from the images, my daughters burger looked like it was made from scraps of burnt pieces of beef. It didn't even fill out the bun. Her chips looked like they were the small bits leftover when enough food isn't made. My other two children ordered chips which were a whopping £12 (when the online menu says they're £5), and no bigger then a mcdonald's medium portion. I got the vegetarian sweet potato roast. The sweet potato part was alright. But it came with, what I can only describe as, microwave veg. It looked like leftover pieces. And the gravy already poured all over. The roasted potatos weren't even properly roasted. My husband ordered the pie of the day. He said it was fine. It wasn't amazing or bad, he did the say there wasn't enough gravy and it was very watery - though he got it at the side and not pre poured over, like mine. I wouldn't recommend if you've not been before.

Walked down with the dog for a bite to eat. We ordered tapas bits, cheese dip, pulled pork chips & garlic prawns. I was pleased to find that dogs are now welcome in more of the pub, as I believe they were previously restricted to the small bar on the right. The service from the lady who looked after me was first class, welcoming, chatty & efficient, she was also the only member of staff which I could identify as staff. The other staff especially the tall lad were just dressed scruffily and you couldn’t tell if they were staff. So when he leaned over us to collect glasses it was a little uncomfortable until we realised he must be staff. A uniform or badge would be a great addition. And to be honest, at £17-19 for main dishes I would expect a little bit smarter or at least be able to identify the staff. The food was good aside from the prawns. They were £6.95 and we received 7 small prawns in a dish. Perfectly nice to eat, but these were really quite small and we both commented on the size and general quantity vs price. The only other grumble was that we waited over 40 mins for food, only 3 small dishes too. I’m sure we will be back, but just a few things that need a bit of attention.

The pub has 3 rooms, Dining room was big and cold The bar was warm but packed with drinkers. So we sat in the little room that's not usually used, had a fire and 4 tables, Just us so no need to be hushed or worried anyone would hear what we were talking about. All forms filled and submitted. Think they expect you to eat the rest with a spoon 😂 Breads & oils again 3 skinny bits of bread & a cup of oil with vinegar. Think they need to reevaluate the menu options & lower the prices. Been coming here for years. Having a beer at the edge of the canal with my 6yr old and told he couldn't use his little rod. Pathetic really. Rules rules rules. Won't be back.

This canal-side pub paints a pretty picture of alfresco dining during these past few weeks of warm evenings. Best of all is Fish Friday when they serve terrific cod and tasty chips. Jack, the cheerful head waiter, is always on hand to make sure we're happy. And we are because there is no more pleasant a places in Hemel to spend a Friday evening.

Such a lovely location but the food we had was mediocre. Scampi and chips accompanied by a small portion of peas with a cheap tartar sauce. None of it was homemade and probably the cheapest frozen items they could find. Disappointing.

Noisy, crowded bar. Public tend to stand at the small bar even though there's seating.

Roast dinner 10/10, lovely. Apple crumble is big enough to share! Team and customers friendly. Colouring for kids too.

Very good atmosphere here, and the service was really good. We were a big group and they took good care of us. The pizza looked amazing, but the roast really wasn’t up to much.
