The Thomas Egerton in Bolton

I came with my friends for food in the evening . I must warm though that the large is very large . I picked small which I’m glad I did . Yummy food . One thing to take into account though it is a busy pub with atmosphere and music which can be loud . I did find it difficult to hear my friends talking . Unless you select an earlier time . I have been in summer sat outside eating in a bay and it was perfect

Great atmosphere! Full with happy people outside in the setting sun! And my rare steak was cooked to perfection! Perfect evening thank you! Will come again.

Booked knowing a band was playing but boy we didn't expect it to be as packed as it was. However, staff worked really hard to get us seated & food order taken. I did find having the curtains closed at that point made an already hot room even hotter. The food half roast barbecue chicken & a mince suet pudding were both enjoyable. (The band was really good)

We have been drinking in this pub for a few years and the service is fantastic. Yesterday we thought we would give the food a try as we hadn’t eaten there for quite a while and last week we saw food being brought out that looked lovely. We took a couple of our friends with us on this occasion. Needles to say we weren’t disappointed. The food was excellent ! We both had steak baguette and out friends had scampi and chicken burger. All the food was great , service as always was excellent. So pleased to have found great pub food in a pub we frequent more and more for drinks. We will certainly be eating there again.

Best roast beef in town! Went in peak time on a Sunday afternoon and squeezed me in. Excellent choice of quality ales on tap while I waited. Friendly attentive staff. 5⭐️

Lovely place however not somewhere I would go to eat regularly due to only having one vegan option on the menu. Shame as it is only a short drive away.

We have never been disappointed . Midweek early evening ,comfortably busy with a pleasant buzz of conversation. Shown to our table by one of the friendly & helpfull members of staff. We enjoyed a first class meal from a nicely varied menu. If you have never tried the Thomas Egerton you should. Best to book.

Went Easter Sunday had Roast Lamb and was amazing. Friendly and service great even though it was busy. Been several times for Sunday Roast and by far the best in Bolton. Highly recommend.

We travelled up from the Midlands for a family reunion with our cousins from Canada and Portugal. It was a fantastic lunch and well worth the trip. A lovely lady served us and the food was both quality and fantastic value for money. Thank you

The food was really lovely, but I found the atmosphere and the seating a little odd. We went for lunch and it was really beautiful food, worth every penny, but despite the restaurant being really quite quiet we were seated right next to a family who seemed just as uncomfortable with our presence as we were with theirs. This usually wouldn’t be an issue, but the tables were so close together we were practically sat on top of them. We could hear every word of their conversation and they could hear every word of ours. It just made the meal quite awkward. They had a young child who was watching videos on his iPad quite loudly, so I think this ruined the atmosphere quite a lot. By the time I got the opportunity to ask if we could possibly be moved (the restaurant was basically empty so I figured it would be fine) our food was being served so we figured we’d just eat and leave. I’ve been here a few times and never had a problem, it’s beautiful food, friendly staff and usually a lovely environment, but I think our last visit soured it a little for us. Will definitely revisit with hope the tables are a little further apart!

We had an absolutely amazing meal today at The Thomas Egerton we went for lunch with family, it was just brilliant! Staff are very friendly ,helpful and attentive. They cater for food allergies intolerances etc lots of gluten free options and they can do some of the meals to suit your needs. I had homemade soup with gluten free bread followed by Ribeye Steak, homemade chips and gluten free gravy which was amazing! The other dishes were also amazing nachos starter, pigs in blankets, Mediterranean board and mains fish and chips, steak pudding , chicken flatbread and scampi all delicious. Everything was piping hot, fresh, presented nicely and there was a good choice in the menu. A lovely atmosphere, great food would highly recommend a visit and we definitely will be back!

We booked and visited on a busy Thursday evening. The pub offers a table service. We were escorted to our table where we ordered our drinks. Shortly after our food order was taken. The food arrived and was okay. The chips were a little dry and looked like they had been kept warm for too long, but overall a nice meal. The staff were busy so table service was a bit rushed. All in all was an ok experience!

Really enjoyed our trip to The Thomas Egerton today. We reserved a table for 2 online, and upon arrival, we were greeted at the door and welcomed to our table. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout, the food was excellent, and the place has a great look and feel to it. Would definitely visit again!

A surprise retirement party for my husband organised by his lovely work colleagues. The food and service exceeded expectations as always. The food arrived and every one was served together- and there was a lot of us. Very well looked after by Josh and his team and it made for a fabulous, memorable evening- thank you.

Fish and chips are delicious! A definite recommendation (as is the sticky toffee pudding). It’s a very lively pub so can be loud at times but I prefer that to deathly silence!

Been here a few times over the years but a few years ago the chips went from the best in Bolton to not so great, too pale and undercooked, but on my most recent visits I found the chips are back to the very best of Bolton and beyond. Lovely thoroughly cooked proper nice brown chips!!! Recently had the thai curry and the fish and chips all delightful. Lovely tasty food cooked perfectly. Had the smaller portion of fish and chips and it was just enough for me absolutely lovely!!! The staff are very nice smiley and friendly. Will definitely be back!!! ****

If you want to be insulted and humiliated this is the perfect place to visit. The landlord thinks nothing of making rude and personal remarks about you very loudly so that others can hear. One of the comments was that I looked ridiculous

Lovely welcome and service. My cheese and onion pot pie was absolutely delicious. Very large portion. The fish and chips my companion had was a bit bland. However the desserts were so amazing. I would definitely return.

Called in for lunch last week and was pleasantly surprised by the improved seating and calm atmosphere and low background music.We decided to try the new menu and the food was superb especially the thick cut chips and roast chicken. We also called in on Sunday lunch but the place was booked up so obviously the new reigeme have got everything right. This pub always has a large selection of real ale on and we tried the bank top dark ale at only £2 a pint and it was fantastic. So well done Josh and keep up the good work you now have 2 more regulars. Well done.

Another beautiful meal at The Thomas Egerton! I had plate steak pie and my dad had the small fish and chips. It was beautiful. The staff here are so, so friendly and helpful - a real change to many places. Great atmosphere and even better that it’s on our doorstep!

I'm glad I've rediscovered The Thomas Egerton - I wasn't disappointed! I visited for dinner with some family last week. We each tried the 'nibbles' options from the main menu, opting for three dishes for £13. They were far from what you may think are nibbles, with good portion sizes. Three dishes was plenty to fill me up! I went for the Cajun Battered Chicken Poppers with garlic mayo, the Beer Battered Fish Goujons with tartar sauce, and the Salt & Pepper Fries, which were all delicious. Josh and the rest of the staff team were so, so friendly and attentive, and with it being Quiz Night, the place had a real atmosphere. I'll definitely be returning!

Visited early afternoon on a Sunday. The guy that served us at the bar on arrival was very welcoming and friendly. Prior to us sitting down, he advised us that there was a reservation for a large party, including children, in a particular area of the restaurant; which I have nothing against children in restaurants, but was appreciative that we had been informed prior to sitting down.

We eat here fairly often and the food, drinks, service and value for money are always excellent. Why not 5 stars, the menu has not changed for quite a while now and the furniture is a bit worn and in need of an uplift. Otherwise highly recommended.

Mothering Sunday booking, we could see most tables were reserved and we had a reservation ourselves. But worryingly there were only 2 staff on, 1 on the bar and the other serving food.

As we were going to a show, in the local area, we decided to have a meal at the Thomas Edgerton, where we had eaten some twelve months previously. Prior to setting out, we looked at this page and saw Ali's concern about the quality of The chips. Well, they have certainly addressed that problem. We had the Fish and Chips and what an excellent meal that was. Ali, I suggest that you take your sister back there. Harry H

I reviewed this pub last year in July when i found it to have the most amazing seemingly home cooked chips. I took my sister in December to try them out and to my dismay the chips were nothing like they had been previously. They were basically raw warm potatoes with grease on, pure white in colour just really raw uncooked and vile! I told the waitress who apologised and said they had changed their supplier and these potatoes just wont cook like the others! and that was that, so I wont be returning unless I hear the potatoes have changed back, why change something thats working unless its to cut costs but at the cost of losing customers!

We had a fantastic time. 50 people turned up and we were well looked after and can recommend the TE. We ordered chip buttys and they went down a treat. Thank you to all the staff especially Emma who was very helpful and easy to deal with.

I went for lunch with my wife and ordered the big Lancs burger. One of the best burgers I’ve had in ages, my wife also loved the beer battered chicken strips that she ordered. The staff were very friendly, I will definitely be going back soon

So disappointed we’ve been coming here for drinks for years and the food always looked amazing so we eventually decided to treat ourselves to a Sunday roast.

I live round the corner and often come in with my wife, sometimes with my nephew and mother for lunch. I’ve been vegan for just over a year now and veggie 2 years prior. It would be amazing to have more than one vegan option which is currently an albeit delicious, hummus baguette (without coleslaw). Other than that - nice environment, friendly staff and great drinks selection.

Visited today after not being there for a while and so disappointed. The pink roast beef was on stale bread with almost white margarine barely touching the bread and just broken bits of Tortilla chips. My friends burger bun was burnt and hard and the last diner left their cold chips. Such a shame. The staff are lovely but the chef needs some lessons on what and what not to serve.

7 of us for a booked Sunday lunch...we had a great table, we were looked after really well...the steaks were awful...!!! A chef should celebrate cooking a steak...shouldn’t they??? Isn’t that the point???!!! These steaks were boiled...v v v disappointed in great cuts of meat, no colour, soggy basically. So very disappointing food. Sorry. The beer was great though..

This is the second time I’ve been here recently. I’ve been very impressed on both occasions. Staff are friendly. The food is lovely. The cost is very reasonable.

Just visited this evening for the third time for our tea on a Friday night and once again it didn’t disappoint.We both had the fish and chips and the batter was as light as a feather,service was second to none and the prices are very reasonable.It’s advisable to book on a Friday evening as in our experience it can get quite busy about 6pm ish,but a tip is to ask for a table in the rear of the pub as it can get quite noisy near the bar area.

First visited here several years ago and remember it to be really lovely food. but again visited a couple of weeks ago and have to say the service was wonderful, lovely friendly staff and the service was great. We went on a quiet Tuesday night. The staff were friendly. We had cheese and onion and steak plate pies which were quite good althogu a little on the dry side. The veg were good. What wasn't good was the price of my wife's small lemonade and lime drink £2.50.

Had already booked at another restaurant locally. As there was 13 of us they requested us to pre-book our meals. We downloaded the menu from their website. 7 out of the 13 meals were not available (including their signature dish!!!) so we decided to come here. So glad we did. Extremely friendly staff and lovely food. Not one complaint from any of us. Would go here again definitely. Reasonably priced as well.

A once good pub has descended into blandness and mediocrity.It used to be well run with good management. Now it is faded. Avoid.
