The Thatchers in Uttlesford

Banging Christmas lunch. Service is above and beyond. Food for 8 arrived smoothly together and with every placeholder's order remembered. There are top London restaurants who could usefully learn how to do this. One imagines the Sunday lunches are just as good, year round. A properly run establishment.

Booked by my daughter for dinner, lovely setting and extremely helpful and patience staff, food was beautiful and delicious. Will be back next time on the mainland.

8 of us, all with different needs, including one disabled. Really nice food. Friendly, helpful staff. Recommended.

The consistency of the Thatchers is remarkable. The sixth meal I have had there this year and once again just about perfect in every aspect. Food bang on, young staff are so efficient and professinal, pub ambience spot on ie no tv, no music, no machines. Even the other customers are very pleasant. Love the place.

The food was delicious although quite expensive. The staff were friendly however, the owner is not ! Overall it’s good.

Amazing food! I had the pie and would highly recommend. My friend had the burger and also enjoyed their meal. Portion size was also good so we had to share a dessert.😃 Would definitely recommend and would go back even though it is not local.

Enjoyed a quiet evening at The Thatchers after Mr 'Slack' drove right past the pub. We had a relaxing drink and relaxed. The log fire was burning - it was lovely & warm. We've been there a few times and will be back again.We've been there before.

Had a beautiful meal here with my sister, never been before and will 100% return food was amazing.

Lovely looking pub both external and internal. Good atmosphere with friendly staff. Great service too. However, in our opinion the food was average but at high'ish end prices. Didn't feel like good value at all. My chicken schnitzel was bland and disappointing for £25.00. Not impressed with the slightly greasy potato rectangles that appeared deep fried. Wife's sea bass meal was small for £25.00. One fillet only! Our usual pub to eat always serves up two big fillets of sea bass, more veg etc.... for £19.00. It was fairly busy on a Saturday night but sorry not for us! Great place to go for drinks.

For the fifth time this year had an excellent meal at the Thatchers. The food was superb, the 5 serving girls professional, smiling and charming (also pretty but not sure if I am allowed to say that) They all seem to like each other and this shows in their dimeanor. All very attentive and continually circulating to ensure guests are happy. (We are) Great atmosphere in the pub , no music, polite and pleasant customers. Think I spoke to the mangeress/landlady on the way out and she was as charming and friendly as all the other staff. If there is a better pub within 30 miles I would love to know where it is. Will unquestionably go back and recommend to all my family and friends. Remarkably just as good at lunctimes!

With easy access via the new junction 7a of the M11 this pub seemed an ideal venue for lunch on the way to catch an afternoon flight at Stansted Airport. What a lucky find! Excellent service and really good food. Unfortunately our return flight was a late one so we couldn't make a return visit but will definitely remember it for the future.

Had 3 or 4 meals here in the last year and really cannot fault the place. The food is excellent, the prices fair, the young staff most pleasant so have to give 5 stars.

You won't find a better place fora super meal and atmosphere

Hands down the best potatoes I have ever eaten!!! Stopped here for lunch before heading to Stansted airport and wow, so glad we did! Lovely pub, great food and friendly accommodating staff. Shame I don’t live closers as I’ll be thinking about those potatoes for a very long time!

I booked in for a meal at The Thatchers as they had a good range of fish dishes. Above average amount of fish dishes as opposed to other pubs and also their fish dishes are more than just fish and chips. In fact their entire menu is elevated above the usual fayre you will find at most pubs. I nearly didn’t book however because when I rang and asked about their menu I was told by some male employee to go and look at their menu online. I told the person I spoke to that that option was currently inconvenient to me which is why I was ringing to ask for some information. It seems incredible to me that someone ringing to ask for information about their pub and their service would be shoved away like that as an almost inconvenience. Anyway I persisted and booked a table. The pub is wholesome to side and cosy. We had a table next to the bar although the pub does expand a bit and is larger than I could see. I have to be honest, I wasn’t entirely happy with the merging of pub and restaurant. If I am eating in a restaurant I don’t necessarily want to be eating at close quarters with people who are just in the pub to drink. The two types of visit can sometimes clash with each other. Rowdy drinkers and quieter dining groups. On this occasion there was no such issue but it was something that crossed my mind were I to consider a return. The food when it arrived was certainly a step above the normal standard of food served in pubs. Beautiful and tasty food. Was it worth the elevated price? £25 for a main course in a pub potentially sitting alongside normal clients drinking beer….im not sure I would be happy if that were the case. On this occasion I was happy to pay as the service, the food and the atmosphere was very pleasant.

Cozy pub on the inside with seating out-side in the sun- though it is close to a busy road so the seating isn’t particularly quiet hence score of 7/10

Lovely gastro pub! Food and service was excellent. More like a restaurant than a pub especially the menu. Would thoroughly recommend...Nice laid back atmosphere good attentive staff, nice surroundings and food spot on.

This charming old pub and restaurant is a good place to eat. The menu is eclectic and offers dishes from small plates (which are not so small) to pub classics. The staff are friendly and the bar is well stocked. Only my visit I had the Korean fried chicken small plate, which with a side, was plenty. Others had the belly pork (very generous) and the spicy prawn small plate (very spicy). The prices are fair too.

I love this place and keep coming back for more. A traditional English local pub. They have an excellent chef and do some great food. The roast beef on a Sunday is by far the best I've had, tender, jucy and full of flavour. Worth a visit if passing by the area.

2024 - Booked table for 4 on Mother's Day, service was very good and the restaurant was very busy. Good selection of drinks and a variety of food options. Scampi, roast beef and sea bass all were good potions and tasty, finished with 2 deserts and 2 cappuccinos, would love to return.

I booked here for my parents birthday lunch based on the reviews, photos and menu. What an absolute gem we’ve found. Friendly and attentive service. Warm and funny landlord/owner(?) the food was special. Really, really good and we are fussy! Absolutely delicious. So many options and great for gluten free like me! Lovely atmosphere. Warm, relaxed. Spotlessly clean. Could’ve stayed all day and night. Already planning a return. Thank you for a great afternoon.

Not dog friendly. Disappointing and highly inconvenient given the countryside location. It looked nice aside from that.

Some of the best triple cooked chips I've ever had. The crispy potatoes as an appetiser is also highly encouraged. The scampi was super fresh and juicy and the batter was seasoned deliciously. What a amazing spot for family food!

What a wonderful place. The staff were all fabulous, beautifully decorated, great atmosphere, spotlessly clean. Then there’s the food, being gluten intolerant is often a real problem, but there were a number of lovely choices available to me, and the staff were completely aware and knowledgeable about the options and how they’re cooked. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and look forward to a return visit soon.

We chose the pub as it was a central point for the family to meet (some in Norfolk, some in London and some in Sussex). Our whole experience was fantastic. The staff were very polite, welcoming and accommodating - offering to go above and beyond to serve us. Everyone in the party loved their food but the roast beef dinner must be the best of them all. It was very tasty and, with the additional cauliflower cheese (which was by far the best that I have ever tasted), was an absolute pleasure from the first bite to the last. We couldn't have asked for more and will definitely be back.

Booked a table for lunch with family. Three out of four of us went for the roast turkey. Food was amazing. Plenty of it on the plate and all was cooked to perfection. Such a lovely pub. Will definately return!

I don't go to pubs often but £6.80 for a pint of peroni is I thought exhaubitant no wonder pubs are closing down

First time visiting whilst my dogs were getting groomed nearby. Lovely pub. Car park is a bit tight to get in and out of spaces when busy. Two bar staff were great when I arrived, very polite and helpful. I ordered the chicken and ribs. It was very nice. The boneless fried chicken in the meal was lovely. All the food was cooked perfectly. The coleslaw was very tasty. Will definitely be back when I get the dogs groomed again. Great pub.

Cosy pub, delicious food (I had the haddock and triple cooked chips and it was very tasty), friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere. Does get busy at peak times and the car park is relatively small.

Faultless food, service and friendliness

My first visit to the Thatchers and a delightful experience. Service was cheerful, warm, attentive and personable . . . . just perfect. Our orders were promptly taken and served. Both mains were presented with attention to detail but avoiding fuss. Battered cod was delicious and had been cooked in fresh oil, similarly the chips. The draft Guiness bore witness to high maintenance and storage standards. Prices were restrained and an absolute steal given the quality. Cannot recommend highly enough.

My partner and I loved the place. It’s a very cosy and pretty pub with friendly staff. The food was excellent - great portions, really well seasoned, and a good price. The staff were very flexible with our booking and also very helpful giving us recommendations for a taxi. Would totally recommend The Thatchers to others :)

Enjoyed a very nice meal on our first visit to this pub this evening. We had the short crust pie and the sea bass. Both were excellent.

Excellent food, generous portions, tasty hot, with a varied menu and lots to chose from. Staff were brilliant, cheerful, quick service and they genuinely cared about you as a customer. Good coffee. We were only passing through, no booking 4 dogs, 6 adults and was made very welcome.
