The Ash Pub in Uttlesford

We passed by this place everyday we went for our training at Stansted airport back in the 80s. As I recalled, it was just a pub then; pretty good one too. Now, there's even an Inn from the makeover barn across the road. Great choice

This pub is lovely, the roast beef was yummy and the bar lady and waiter were great. I would definitely recommend this pub.

Ivan the manager was very warm and welcoming and the pub is really nice. As good as you will get with the all day breakfast. Really enjoyed my visit.

Staff were so friendly and welcoming and the food was some of the best pub food I've tasted! I had the home cooked chicken curry and it was excellent, no cheap microwave stuff here. Highly recommend this place

Nice pub, very friendly staff. Good menu and reasonable prices. Ribs excellent and puddings very good. Slightly disappointed with beef strognoff as was spicy... normally should be a creamy mushroom sauce.

THIS OLDE WORLDE PUB IS WELL OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, IT IS LIKE AN OASIS IN A DESSERT. FOOD IS SERVED FROM 11AM DAILY, NOT THE CHEAPEST BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. THE BARMAN WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.

We only had drinks, but as always the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Had the roast lamb. Previously, this was ok. However, the latest one was disappointing. Small portions of veg (how cheap is veg!?) Only a few small slices of lamb, which tasted quite blanned. I hope they go back to the previous standards. If not, I'll find somewhere else for my Sunday lunch.

Had an impromptu evening here as its dog friendly. Amazing 1st visit. We will be back. The staff were so welcoming and helpful.

After waiting 1h20+ for our roast dinners, we were served shrunken and burned carrots, cold and rubbery meat (pork and beef), soggy broccoli and cold mashed potatoes. For a £17 meal, this is unacceptable.

After an extremely long wait, whilst the pub did not even appear to be that busy we were finally served our roast dinners. They were warm, not hot! The pork was covered in thick rubbery fat! The tiny portions of vegetables were soggy, with blackened bits of carrots amongst it! There were two pale hard roast potatoes, laying next to some sloppy mash potato! Everything was swimming in watery gravy! After one mouthful it was all returned! We noticed other left meals on a table nearby! A family who has just come in to eat see our awful food and decided to not eat there. Totally unacceptable, as well as disappointing.

Stumbled onto this place while looking for somewhere to eat as been to 2 other pubs in the area but they had closed down. I had Sausage and Mash in a giant yorkie was very happy with my choice it was a very generous portion with veg on the side and plenty of gravey. The pint of Madri was good too. The young lady server was chatty and friendly and a credit to The Ash

The whole place is rundown, needs complete refurbishment. Front garden needs clear up...weeds growing all over the floor. Childrens play area not safe to use, requires replacement. Garden furniture all rotten, needs replacement.Will not be returning to the place in a hurry.

The Ash is a nice old pub where you can sit and relax. sports shown on TV. Food is great good portion sizes

We eight work colleagues had a lunch get together here. Although fairly quiet when we arrived, it did get busier. We had three courses, I started with the Chefs Shanghai Chicken with soy sauce and sweet chilli dip which with five pieces of chicken was a very generous helping. I followed with the mixed grill and the steak part was cooked rare, just as I had asked for. Followed that with a generous helping of Bread and Butter Pudding with a very generous helping of custard. I was stuffed. As driving, I was able to drink the zero alcohol Guinness which also went down well. My colleague sat next to me had THE most huge portion of ribs that covered his large plate. No one could ever leave here hungry. Our waiting staff were great, including the new started on her first day who appeared to slot into the team really well.

A group of us dined here for lunch and had a lovely time. The food was great and the service was friendly. The pub has a traditional and historic feel. Reasonable size of car park and large outside eating/drinking spaces. The bar area is small and intimate, but there are plenty of seating options inside. The menu is very much pub grub, with all of the expected classics. There is a good variety of options and children's menu too.

A nice spot for a bite to eat before a holiday starts. Obviously being so close to the airport has some noise drawbacks. But the food was good and staff excellent.

Everything went very well, except that it took a long time to serve the food, but everything was very good, it is true that in England you don't eat well

Food not to be recommended on the lunch time we visited. Chips very greasy, gammon tough and the basket meals were very small and served in plastic red baskets that would look better by your sink. Would not visit again.

Great Sunday roast but didn't get th country pub vibe I was hoping for.

Disappointing food. I really wanted to like it because the staff were friendly, but ultimately the prices are quite high for what you get. I had the "American" hot dog which came served in the smallest bun I've ever seen, which also had the taste and texture of cardboard.

Lovely welcome, friendly faces and atmosphere. Food was superb too. Cannot fault at all. Had to wait for our friend's plane to land. This will be our go to place for Stansted Airport visits

Booked in for Mother's Day lunch. Taken straight to the table and given menu's. Good service and the food was wholesome and a good size portion. Well cooked and tasty. Prices were also reasonable. Only negative was the table edges need cleaning attention. The name of the pub doesn't reflect the interior which not unsurprisingly has an aviation theme.

A lovely country pub where we went on Mothers Day. Our table of 6 were seated and served quickly and the food was really fantastic. Great portions, individual gravy boats and the staff were lovely! We will definitely be coming back.

We booked airport parking with a one night stay before our flight. We received a very warm welcome on our arrival. Kind & friendly service. Very nice menu and the food was fantastic! Beautiful interior. The accommodation was lovely; clean and cosey. Plenty of parking spaces.

Excellent and varied menu, fabulous food, fantastic service (from the lovely Dawn). Highly recommend. We had the Sunday roast (one vegetarian), which was packed with delicious vegetables and a super huge Yorkshire pudding. Highly recommend!

First time visit to this pub for lunch with a friend, not disappointed.Excellant service from start to finish, very friendly and welcoming. Huge menu to choose from. Lovely food, maybe some items a bit pricey but I'm used to Norfolk prices! Accommodating for gluten free. Recommend the roast but its not on the review list. Can't fault, will be back.

Was recommended the Ash due to their Sunday roast .Two people had the roast and yes it was good but that is where the complaints end.Another two people had the cod and chips unfortunately the batter was uncooked and was a brown colour which tasted of curry? Both of them picked the fish out and left the batter. My veggie burger although eatable looked uncooked with a plain old bun you’d find in a Tesco local and the bowl of tomato sauce it came with was the consistency of water with a reddish colour. We expressed our concerns with the waiter who said “ i will look at it in the kitchen “ we didn’t see him again. Another lady came with the bill we paid and made a quick exit never return again.

We had been told about the Sunday roasts at the Ash pub, so thought we would book a table. On arriving we were told it was busy and there would be a wait. The roast was worth the wait. All fresh veg meat cooked to perfection and a massive Yorkshire pudding. Will definitely be back. Great staff and great atmosphere

I went here with my wife for late Sunday lunch and it was lovely. Portions are very reasonable and so they should be as it was not the cheapest. Everything seemed to be homemade, including chips. Also it is bit of a challenge to find a place that will cook on Sunday, especially that we've eaten around 6pm, these guys are open and cook seven days a week (!) We will definitely be back!

The place is very lovely to have some time to breathe and eat your breakfast or dinner, the food is surprisingly delicious and the staff are 100% making sure you’ll be fully thankfully about everything. Amazing place, will come again.

Booked on line in good time (6 weeks ago) before our early dinner reservation. However when we arrived, they had no record of our reservation, it was a bit awkward to start with but I had kept the confirmation message which the guy read. They said they would be able to seat us anyway, on arriving in the dining room it was very empty, so in the end no issue for a table. We ate after 4pm so it was an early dinner, late lunch, my first two options were not available/sold out, so make sure you pick a few options before they come for your order. I ended up with the beef roast dinner, the beef was good, as was the Yorkshire pudding and the cauliflower cheese. The roast potatoes tasted as if they had been reheated and the parsnips were very over cooked with the carrots remaining very al dente. My husband got his first choice of steak and mushroom pie, he reports it was a very dry filling and the pastry was very hard, the chips and peas were okay. With one pint of beer and a medium glass of wine £48.00 seemed a little steep. We will probably not return due to the quality of the cooking.

Found the gravy a little salty but other than the meal being on the large size no other complaints.

First visit, will not be back. Salmon en Croute was listed as salmon with cream cheese wrapped in smoked salmon in puff pastry. Couldn’t find smoked salmon and the spot of cream cheese wouldn’t have covered my small fingernail, my husband also found his pie and chips overcooked. Refused to pay for the salmon dish. All in all a VERY unsatisfactory visit.

Beautiful thatched building, a treat to see. All the grounds were immaculate. Staff very attentive and food was cooked to perfection. I will be very happy to visit here again

The welcome and food at the pub was great, including the amusing argument between a German couple while we were eating!! The parking offered was fine for he week. The room was ok but the bed could have been more comfortable. The taxi firm that was recommended was brilliant for transfers to airport and back. Made for a smooth start and finish to our holiday. A lovely meal in The Ash. Had a new option. Vegetarian sausages mash potatoes, veggies and two lovely homemade Yorkshire puddings. So nice to see something different on a menu. So many places just do the veggie burger option. Good to see The Ash having multiple options.

About half the items on the menu were not available. Generally mediocre all round. Not somewhere I'd particularly recommend. Not cheap either.

We stayed at The Ash Barn as it's nicer than the local "usual brands of airport hotels". We returned a few days later and stuffed ourselves on the mega BLT they serve.

Stayed at Ash Barn Annex and decided to eat in the Ash Pub. Really excellent menu consisting of a wide variety of home made choices. The services received for both hotel check in and whilst at the pub were excellent. I was travelling solo so this friendly approach made a big difference to my overall experience.

Traditional Greene King pub with generous and tasty food portions. Stayed in the annexe for 1 night, it was basic, a bit dirty but cheap.

Had a fabulous afternoon for my mums birthday party, staff was fantastic very welcoming no rushing, food was fantastic hot and fresh. There was 30 of us and it went off with a treat… made my mums day special will definitely be going back Very good quality. 10 out of 10

Well worth a visit. I was staying in an airport hotel while on business and being part of a captive audience wanted a decent meal. I was with somebody who had some local knowledge and we paid a visit. I had a home made steak and mushroom pie and it was excellent, I enjoyed every last bit of it. The service was excellent, very attentive, I had to wait a little while for the food to arrive but to me it didn’t matter as I was served a freshly cooked totally satisfying meal, well worth the wait. Would highly recommend and will visit again.

I ordered a Fresh beer battered billingsgate cod, chunky chips and garden peas. I got a "whale on a plate" as the cod was so large I was almost defeated. What a great meal. 5 stars.

Lovely pub, sun was shining we sat in the garden for drinks then had a lovely meal. We had the chicken and bacon salad and a gourmet burger. Great portions and very tasty. Staff were very friendly and very helpful. Great atmosphere. Would highly recommend.

One word needed - Disgusting The wait for food was an hour and a half When it came it wasn’t very nice at all Lasagna was swimming in grease The roast dinners we had (beef & chicken) was fatty chewy beef and inedible, plus chicken...

Paid a very reasonable rate with parking included so wasn't expecting too much but actually very pleasantly suprised. Rustic type cabin, great size with lovely comfy beds! Staff friendly and helped with bags. Would stay again!
