First time but definitely not the last! I had the steak salad and my son had haddock and chips! Delicious!

Fantastic pub. Service was very friendly and welcoming on every visit. Good beer selection - the casks change relatively frequently based on our 3 visits. If we are in the area again (we are from New Zealand), we will be back!

Had a Sunday lunch here today on the reccomedation of lady in a local store. Superb lunch good service a good price we will definitely return.

This was the best pub food we found on our recent trip to England. Traditional pub grub is increasingly rare, and what we had found before The Old English Gentleman was disappointing. Bu these folks really nailed it! I had an excellent cottage pie, an ample portion, and my only quibble was that the roasted vegetables which accompanied it were a bit mushy. My wife's plowman's plate was more than she could consume, and a bit more exotic than what I remember (a hung of cheese, some bread and some pickles) but she enjoyed it. Our friend's hamburger was ample in size, and a bit of an American intrusion. The diner who ate vegetarian options seemed happy with an attractive cheese pie of ample size, but did not eat much of the "Moroccan cauliflower." I had a few florets and there seemed to be too much of a hard breading, more or less like stucco. Desserts were just fine, a vegan cheesecake disappeared quickly (who knew such a think existed?) and a huge portion of toffee pudding was excellent. Thumbs up on the beer as well. I can't remember the name of what we had, but it was the option on the right hand side among four fairly local brews. Service is exceptionally friendly, but very, very slow. Our lunch took at least two hours, I think. Note also that this is an exceptionally noisy dining experience, often making conversation challenging.

Great lunchtime selection of sandwiches, panninies and sharing boards. Makes a nice change from full dinners which are usually all you can get at lunchtimes.

Food seemed very good. On Tap drinks tasted watered down where later on I attained cronic acid indigestion likely from the cleaning fluid not flushed from the beer tap pipes. Really needs to focus on this to ensure continued customers.

1 st visite to this pub it will not be the last quaint old building just off the center of Saffron Walden gold street is a small road with no visitor parking but only a short walk from the common or swan medow Not a large pub but tables in dining room are well spaced giving a comfortable atmosphere and a realy plesant place to eat The menue has a very good selection of light bites ,Sandwiches or panines served with salad and chips . i had the fish platter well prepared and served. Tasty with a good portion size all the food served for a table of 6 was of the same high quality the whole menue is loaded with classic favourite dishes Good well kept beer to staff are friendly cheerfull and turn up at the right time. All in a very good lunch. A building this age is often very difficult to access in a wheel chair but in this case there is only a very small step at entrance plenty of room in bar and dinning room on the down side there is a step up to the loos but the staff tell us without fuss where an accessable toilet could be found

A great pub. Always a lovely atmosphere, the interior design is nice & cosy. The staff are also very friendly and I greatly appreciate their tolerance in permitting my friends and I to finish our drinks slightly beyond closing time... we didn't want to leave!

EXCELLENT Sunday lunch yesterday (though would prefer streaky rather than back bacon on my burger). VERY charming staff. (Surprisingly didn’t come up initially when we searched for a venue - which was lucky for us as we got a table - yay!)

51 years ago used this as a local whilst trainging at what was RAF Debden, used to take my girlfriend here who is now my wife. Scampi chips still lovely!

Lovely pub in the heart of the town! Great lunchtime menu and a large selection of beers and wine to chose from. Staff are friendly and it’s always a good atmosphere in there. Lots of public parking available nearby.

Really friendly bar ladies .really nice food .the ultimate would have been slightly browner potatoes .but the meat was tender and homemade Yorkshire pudding.and lovely gravy and fresh horseradish .

There were 9 of us for lunch on a S7nday. Pre ordered meals so everything came out speedily and separate bills organised including drinks we had during the afternoon. Staff went out of their way to make it a great afternoon. Food was good as well! Tha ks for lovely experience. Just be beware no carpark but if you know that in advance not an issue.

We have only recently discovered this tucked away little pub after living in the area for years but wished we had found it sooner. After coming in for drinks during May before a meal in the town we visited it again for lunch in June. We all had wraps, my halloumi one was a little bland but I was told the other two (Brie, bacon and cranberry and Chicken bacon and avocado) were very tasty. Very friendly staff, dogs are welcome and a good atmosphere.

Found Mecca, the only disappointment was when we had to leave. Great beer. Superb & not pricey food. Wonderful, friendly staff. 'We'll be back' & hopefully soon.

It doesn't matter if you go in the daytime or the evening, the welcome you receive is a good one. The staff are energetic and do all they can to get you served quickly. There is a very good selection of wines, real ales and lagers. I have never been let down by the food wether it be a Sunday roast or a sandwich at lunch. The main bar is full of character with a log burner making it feel cosy during the winter months. You will not be disappointed.

Nice atmosphere, service and beer. Fish and chip lunch was disappointing. the Haddock was cooked in cool oil so it was soggy and had greasy batter. Fish portion was small and rather tasteless. Chips were also tasteless and cooked at too low a temperature. I asked for some bread and got a slice of Mothers Pride that came already covered in butter/spread. I don't have either on my bread normally, and expected a bread roll or something. No-one asked me if my meal was ok, otherwise I would have discussed this with them. As I say it seems like a nice pub, but I don't think they should have let my meal leave the kitchen.

I love this pub and always pop in for a pint when I visit Saffron Walden. The beer is always nice, and the staff is friendly. At lunch time it can get very busy, so we always go a little earlier or later to make sure we have a seat. Overall, this is a must visit pub in Saffron Walden, it is probably the only pub left in the area that has such character

Stopped for lunch on a Monday, food was good quality with reasonable prices.I had a well deserved pint which hit the spot and service was prompt and polite and had a fair few customers for Monday lunch. What's not to like.

Called in for lunch today. Lovely pub, close to main shopping area. Warm welcome, nice beers, good pub food menu and very reasonably priced. We both had the fish and chips and at £12.50 it was great value, the fish was really fresh and cooked perfectly, good chips and all the trimmings. The pub was nice and busy, dogs where allowed in which was great to know, the dog opposite us even got a choice of treats! Will definitely recommend and we will be back!

Our party of 15 ramblers had a great lunch here midweek. The staff made us feel most welcome. There was a great choice on the lunch menu and the prices were very reasonable. The OEG is not on a main street, but it's worth seeking out if you are in the centre.

Great choice of lunches , large portions. Friendly atmosphere . Food was great all arrived hot and at same time . Staff friendly and efficient. Even a water bowl for dogs down in outside seating area. Will go again to try something else of the menu . I had the burger which came with chips and coleslaw, which was more than enough. Highly recommend.

Very pleasant, tidy, well run pub just off the main town. Didn’t see any parking so check first but did have plenty of tasteful tables and chairs within the pub and an outside area. Very good menu and sensible prices. Excellent quality meals with top service. Couldn’t ask for more. Wish our local was half as good.

After having an abysmal experience yesterday in Saffron Walden Wetherspoons went to a proper pub for lunch, couldn't have been more different. Homemade fish finger sandwich, you could tell their own.

A fantastic experience, went for lunch with my son. The whole experience from the moment we walked in to leaving was superb. We had the Ploughman’s Sharing Platter which was delicious and was the perfect portion size. No idea on a really hot day how my son polished off a sticky toffee pudding, but he did and pronounced it delicious. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I highly recommend The Old English Gentlemen as a lovely old world Saffron Walden pub with a big heart. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. It is very popular with tourist and locals alike. The landlord and landlady including staff know what good customer service is all about and make customers feel welcome

Lunch here was great in the sunny courtyard. Seafood platter and lasagne both enjoyed with a couple of drinks. Place frequented by locals, and the "gimmick" is the grumpy landlord making you feel unwelcome....but I think (although not completely sure!) this is all a show.

We have been coming here for years - then Covid struck… now we have been back on numerous occasions in recent months and can highly recommend this pub - it is better than ever before - whether it be for drinks or lunch - all are good. Sunday roast is very good - as are many of the other items on the lunch menu. They have a lovely, sunny, outdoor seating area as well as a cozy interior. The staff are really great and one other thing that I love is the fact that they have really nice clean toilets which can’t be said of some of the other places in town. We will look forward to return visits.

An emergency at our family lunch was handled so superbly by this establishment, we should like to thank them very much. The owners were so kind and understanding until we could get emergency paramedics to look after our family member. Can’t recommend this pub enough, for lovely staff and great food.

The OEG has a warm welcoming atmosphere as soon as you enter. There's a decent choice of real ales and the service is friendly and efficient. The food offer was limited as a consequence of the current situation but what we had was very reasonable and helped soak up the ale. The pub is small and there seemed to be a general aversion to wearing a mask so Covid sensitive individuals may not feel entirely comfortable. We enjoyed our visit.

It is run by two of the most generous and kind people you'd ever hope to meet, supported by staff of the same. There is humanity in everything they do. In the very unlikely event you are not pleasantly surprised, it will be corrected immediately. The beer is good, the food is excellent and plentiful, the cocktails are inexpensive. It's not posh, it's not rough - it is a honest and friendly place in which any and everyone çan totally relax.

We sat on a lovely terrace in the sun, great food and good service.

I can't find fault with any aspect of this pub. It had three real ales including Woodford Wherry, a reasonably-priced food menu, with well cooked, simple fare (see other peoples' photos). The mood was bright, efficient and, above all, welcoming. I would recommend.
