Lunch in The Terrace was a relaxed experience and views were spectacular! Portion size for lunch was adequate, food served (fish and chips and Indonesian curry) was delicious and piping hot. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We will definitely look forward to visiting again.

Well what a place this is, if you’re ever in Cornwall this is a must visit! Breathtaking views surround this stunning historical building that has that special something, the interior is a masterpiece and really has that luxury feel. The staff can’t be any more helpful, the food is delightful and the atmosphere really tops of a great outing. A must visit whether that be afternoon tea, lunch or evening dinner. 5 stars!!!

Booked lunch at The Terrace restaurant for our Mothers special birthday and was greeted upon arrival. Taken to a nice table, with fantastic views and offered water and menus, nothing came so after 10mins had to chase up. Ordered two cream teas and one hot dish, was told that they come from separate kitchens, however they would ensure they were all served together. The hot dish arrived but no cream teas. Had to chase up and still waited a further 10mins, whilst the hot food went cold. It wasn’t a busy service and my observation (I’m in the industry) was some staff are rushing around whilst others look busy but don't really seem to be doing anything plus a lot of chat going on. Overall the view saved the day and our Mother had a nice experience but could have been so much better!

This hotel has a five star rating. I visit often for a coffee in the lounge area after a coastal walk. The staff are lovely and very polite. My one star review relates to The Terrace Restaurant. I went for lunch with my husband and our very well behaved dog. I ordered fish and chips which came with ketchup tartar sauce and minted crushed peas. It was ok but disappointingly they used frozen chips. My husband ordered mussels. It came with a small piece of bread and a bowl to clean fingers. No bowl for used mussel shells. I found it quite shocking that there was 5 unopened muscles. I realise the chef could miss the odd one but 5! There were only two other tables being served so it’s not like they were anywhere near busy. There’s no excuses for this in my opinion. Let’s talk about the staff. Normally very lovely as I said earlier. However the waiting staff were indifferent to our complaint about the unopened mussels When pressed they offered a small discount off the meal price of £5. That not really the point HH! I asked if she understood why unopened muscles were unacceptable, she said she did. Another member of staff was very uneasy when she served our drinks and food giving our table a wide birth. When asked she stated she had had a bad experience with a dog and could not trust dogs anymore. Should she be serving in a dog friendly restaurant? I don’t think so. She obviously has a huge phobia as a result of her experience but the lengths she went to to avoid our dog made us feel uncomfortable. She went behind my chair and squashed herself in between the table and the window stretching out to serve our drinks and food. As a 5 * hotel HH you should do better. The Terrace has always let you down IMO. Get a decent chef and a better menu and train the staff to act appropriately when things go wrong. It’s not all about the money and this was definitely not good enough.

Elegant and relaxed dining experience. Great cocktails and fresh food cooked to order. Lovely sea views from most tables and perfect to watch the sunset. The staff were lovely, in particular Kezi and Nastassla who were knowledgeable of the menu, friendly and welcoming. We very much enjoyed our meal and setting.,

Went to the restaurant- 'the terrace' - terrible food and terrible service. Waited nearly an hour for food, for it to be served cold and just terrible quality. Had the cheek to try and charge service charge on top of an exorbitant bill. View was good, and that is about it.

Food was good to look at. I had a portion of fries as I wanted a ceaser salad but the dressing had anchovies in so that was no longer an option for me. My husband had the burger and fries. Looked delicious but made him horribly sick. It tasted fine but the meat was very ‘wet’ he now thinks it wasn’t cooked. I went to pay and was given the change, I noticed in my hand I had 2 pennies and thought to myself what on earth has cost 8p as all we had was a portion of fries, a burger and fries and some water. I went back and asked for a receipt and saw they had added on a 10% service charge with no notice written anywhere and no verbal communication about it either. I personally think this is disgusting. When you’re charging £20 for a burger and fries (no salad or anything else on the plate) your profit margins are big enough as it is. I will never return here and I live here.

Evening meal in the Terrace restaurant. Came last yr & it wasn’t great ( we were massively overcharged & service v slow) , hoping it would be better . Sadly not much. My wine wasn’t particularly chilled so we asked for a colder one. They took my glass away but we had to ask twice where the replacement was, had finished starter by the time my original glass ( had my lipstick mark on it) which had obviously just been put in the fridge , was brought out. I ordered Caesar salad. Appeared to have almost no dressing on it so asked for some to be added , which was done. Grand total of 3 croutons, a few pieces of pretty chewy chicken & a whole load of lettuce . I would be embarrassed to serve this to guests in my own home, let alone customers paying through the nose . The nice member of staff took it off our bill when I told her it wasn’t good. I’ve read management responses to negative reviews on here and I’m staggered by the sniffy attitude . Before our meal we were considering a stay here, but not anymore .

We are locals and have been visiting the Hotel and restaurants for 10 years since we moved to Newquay. My partner is currently a member of the new health spa and pool. I was a member before the refurb. Also, as a family we had been holidaying most years at the hotel since the mid 70’s around the time when the Armstrong’s took over. In fact although we live across the bay overlooking the Hotel we spent a week there at Christmas a couple of years ago. On Tuesday we ate at The Terrace. Unfortunately it will now be the last time we eat at the Hotel for a very long time. The menu is very compact, not a problem, I ordered a starter, then fish and chips, my partner had the same starter then a salad with a side of chips. The waitress forgot to bring her order pad but said she would remember our order. The starters were very nice. The mains arrived, unfortunately she had forgot to order the side of chips for my partner but assured us they would arrive in 5 mins, which they did. My dish came on a plate which was so cold I’m sure they had kept it in the fridge. It arrived with 3 side pots, tartare sauce, curry sauce and a sort of mushy pea compote (can’t remember the exact name) The waitress came over after a few minutes asking if everything was ok, I answered “is the pea dish supposed to be cold”, ‘Yes’ she told me. A minute later as she was walking past I asked the same question and again she said ‘Yes’. The supervisor realised something may be not right so she attended our table and I asked her about the ‘pea dish’. It should be hot she immediately told me! As she was walking back to the kitchen I tasted the curry sauce and that too was stone cold. Both pots were replaced within several minutes. Meanwhile because of my cold plate I was trying to eat my food as quickly as possible. The Hotel welcome dogs and several were with their owners in the restaurant. I was stunned to watch the waitress pet, stroke and cuddle all the dogs in turn and then return to serving customers food without appearing to clean her hands!!! I mentioned this to the supervisor who replied, “ we have hand gel behind the counter”! They may well have gel but I never saw the waitress use it once. The Hotel is in a fabulous position, the Armstrongs have to be commended for achieving 5* status, for keeping it as a family run establishment and for investing so much money in to the business. We have many many friends who use the Hotel and the consensus of opinion is that they (the hotel) never get everything right. There’s always a problem. It’s such a shame. Please Veryan, I’m not trying to tell you how to run the only 5 star Hotel in Cornwall but, maybe, just maybe a new training programme aimed at your staff teaching them to be able to consistently deliver 5 star service and luxury to the your customers - who are paying 5 star prices - would reap amazing dividends for you.

We had a beautiful meal 2 years ago, we chose off the Christmas menu. Sadly this time was totally different apparently no Christmas menu (kitchen refurb, not sure that’s an excuse plus bad time over Christmas if true) menu limited so only fish and chips so we had that nearly £50 for fish and frozen chips and a drink each, really expensive for what we got. Feeling really disappointed 😞

We had lunch in the Terrace restaurant and although our waitresses were wonderfully kind, it was a disappointment nonetheless. Compared to previous visits (admittedly, although local, we hadn't visited in some time), the food was just not of the same quality as in other years. We understand times are harder but it would've been good to've had access to some sort of pre-starter while we were waiting for a delayed person to arrive: some olives perhaps, or some bread and oil or a few nuts... these were readily available before; we missed them. What we did order was mostly substandard for the Terrace: 'venison lollipops' (£8 a shot for three mouthfuls of minced meat on a cocktail stick with a sugary red cabbage dipping sauce); a red cabbage salad (£12), which would've been okay if less salty; a Terrace Burger (£16) and Crab Roll (£19) both came with stale buns, which always spoils things, although the crab itself was fresh and sweet, as it should be. Having said that, the Sweetcorn Soup was delicious (£9), although the rather small piece of cornbread that came with it was also stale. Slim, piping-hot French Fries (a rather steep £6 each) were perfectly crisp and fluffy; a 'Caramelised Autumn Apple' Eton Mess (£7) combined well sweet meringue, tart apple and smooth, whipped cream. Black coffee was good and hot; the New Zealand Hawksdrift Sauvignon Blanc delicious (although steep at £11.50 a glass; perhaps the Headland prefers guests to order whole bottles). The final bill, of over £100 for three of us with service charge included, felt just too high for what we got. We left a tip nonetheless, in gratitude to the waitresses. I remember wonderful lunch dishes at the Terrace: fish pies and other fish offerings appropriate to Cornwall and to its local fishing industry; hot, generous pans of mussels (in season); rich, warming beef casseroles. It's disappointing that the Terrace has yielded to the ubiquitous pub-style burgers and fish-and-chips or salads, with soup or sandwiches as backup, on a menu unchanged since October. We were surprised there was no Christmas offering: not even something with cranberry sauce, or hot mince pies! It shouldn't be impossible to offer delicious, imaginatively cooked food, even on a budget. We won't stop coming but because we usually come for a special reason, we live in hope things can be more varied and enterprising before too long. The Terrace should not be an average place to eat. The view is as splendid and soul-restoring as ever.

Spent an evening in the Terrace restaurant, Firstly the food was great we had crab linguine which was delicious, the views are stunning but most of all the service was outstanding My daughter has a severe nut allergy. As we made the booking we were asked in detail about this On arrival it was explained to us that all nuts had been removed from the bar area and all nut products removed from the menu. During the night the service led by Agatha continued to be of the highest calibre with all the waitresses going the extra mile & being genuine & friendly with it, without being fussy Highly highly recommend

The staff at the terrace were very helpful and friendly. You enter via the entrance to the Headlands hotel; the restaurant itself was easy to locate, clean and well layed out. The restaurant is dog-friendly and has beautiful views and outdoor seating (which unfortunatly was not open due to the weather). The menu offered options to suit every taste and was very receptive to food allergies, offering alternatives where possible (although can only speak of gluten-free). The food was tasty and we left feeling full. The only reason that I have not rated the terrace as a 5/5 is due to the price. The food was expensive (find prices on online menu) but I believe this was for the view, convenient location and the friendliness of the staff.

This restaurant is the brasserie type restaurant at the Headland Hotel. We had a very good lunch , the service is very up and down. The food was of a good quality. The prices are slightly on the high side , as is everything at the hotel. The restaurant is the full blaze of the sun gets exceptionally hot. Sitting on a garden bench with over stuffed cushions does not make for a comfortable experience. If you do not like dogs stay away from this restaurant , as there are dogs everywhere. This is fairly unusual in this rated establishment. Dinner is very similar with the same menu , and similar spasmodic service levels.

The children were able to find something to eat on the menu and the portions were perfect (if not a little too big). Unfortunately, due to the Jubilee weekend, the drinks delivery hadn't yet arrived so drinks were limited, however, this did not spoil our experience and the staff were incredibly helpful and apologetic Staff were friendly and interacted well with different members of the family appropriately, adding to the experience. Well done! We will definitely be back in August! It's already booked!

Booked a lunch here as part of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme that allowed me to try a few places that would normally be somewhat over budget. There are good Covid procedures here. Temperature was taken on arrival and staff wore masks when moving around the building and waiting at table. Movement around the building is based on a one way system. There is a slightly limited menu but enough for most tastes and, if not, there are other restaurants at The Headland Hotel with different fare. Staff were friendly, the food was cooked to order and as it was such a nice day we sat outside under a sunshade with a view looking over Fistral Beach.A pleasant way to spend over two hours.

We have eaten here many times and are very fond of the Headland hotel and so it is disappointing that our experience today was somewhat lacking. We are staying in the Headland Cottages and fancied an early lunch so headed for the Terrace. On entry to the hotel we were greeted by a member of staff who after asking whether they could help, told us they were only accommodating residents at The Terrace....when we explained we were at the cottages they apologised and let us in. A minor thing in some ways however making assumptions about who is/is not resident is somewhat judgemental and patronising and the same outcome could be achieved in a much more welcoming manner. On arrival at Terrace we were directed to a table which still had the glasses from the previous occupants....multiple servers passed us and even took our order without clearing these. They were eventually removed but the table was not cleaned (fortunately I carry antibacterial wipes and did it myself). Our order was taken reasonably quickly however the food/drink service was incredibly slow. It took forever to get two glasses of wine - I think they were actually catching the fish and treading the grapes. The food itself was fine - the burger was good and the fish and chips okay but could have been warmer. This was raised with the waitress who checked on the food, she initially walked off but did offer to replace when she walked past again (I declined due to the wait for the food initially). Overall the staff did seem to be trying hard however it was all a bit chaotic - a bit like busses nobody would serve you and then two would arrive in quick succession! Sophie was exceptional however, attentive and genuinely helpful. I really appreciate that the closure due to Covid has really affected the hospitality industry and that family run businesses and severely impacted. I therefore really do want to support these independent firms. While I understand there may be limited staff - warm, attentive service costs nothing and cleanliness has to be paramount at the present time.

This is a location we frequently come to whether or not we're actually staying at the hotel. I've previously left a gushing review, because before this visit the food had been a delight! I ordered the hake with broccoli stems, and roasted baby potatoes...it was close to an hour befor we got our order. The fish was so dry it was like sawdust, and tasted off, just an awful flavor. No broccoli on the plate, and the potatoes tasted old and were greasy. No one apologized for the long wait, no one came over at anytime to see how everything was. We ended up getting up to pay at the counter, told about our food, the wait, no customer service...all the guy said was "sorry, I'll let the kitchen staff know." That's it. No refund, no "5" star service, nothing. So gutted. So annoyed. So let down.

We booked in to The Terrace at the Headland Hotel for a special meal to celebrate our family visit to Newquay. From the moment we arrived it was a bit of a mess. The acknowledgement of our table booking didn't give much confidence and it was not clear if a table had been reserved or not.As we were 20 minutes early we sat on the terrace to take in the evening sun, but no serving staff arrived. Eventually I went a got our own drinks from the bar and had another wait there. The terrace had glasses on it and it was clear there was a lack of service staff. We got to the restaurant and wish we hadn't. The service was appalling, the food was average, the bill was wrong the first time it came and the meal was just a bit of a shambles. The staff were undermanned, but also poorly trained, and twice more I had to go to the bar for my own drinks as the service was so bad. Just a note - the restaurant and terrace were far from busy in late June, and that did give an impression that locals have voted with their feet despite the beautiful views and sunset.

Part of the Headland Hotel, The Terrace enjoys a good position with views over Fistral Beach. You can choose to sit inside (as we did) or when the weather is good, seating on the outside area is very popular, particularly for drinks and lunch/afternoon snacks. We ate dinner here on two evenings, which is probably the most you would probably manage as the menu is fixed, with no daily "specials". A little variety would be welcome. My steak was excellent, but the Terrace cheeseburger was a little disappointing - too dry. Mrs I had salad on both occasions and these were good.Service was variable. After finishing our meals on the first night.....nothing happened. We went as a small group for a special occasion afternoon tea with some of us having vegan versions. To our great disappointment the vegan scones were the worst we have ever eaten, they were extremely dry, small, dense and grainy. There were no vegan cakes, only tiny flapjacks and some fruity things, albeit very pretty. We also had great difficulty catching a server's eye for tea and coffee refills, they were altogether not very professional as I also didn't get a proper answer from one young member of staff to a question I asked. I sent several emails afterwards about those scones wondering whether there has been some mistake such as a mix up with gluten free ones as those tend to be dry and grainy; however, I didn't get a single reply, shocking! We have actually stayed at the Headland Hotel in the past and over the years have eaten many times in The Terrace (we have a loyalty card), bringing our visitors there too. What has upset us most is the fact that my emails were just ignored, how rude. I don't think we'll visit again.

Very rude staff in the restaurant! We were shooed out of the dining room because we just wanted tea and cake rather than a main meal.....a shame as we stayed here every year when I was growing up! A very unpleasant vibe......

Gorgeous hotel and restaurant / terrace overlooking fistral. Good service. Lovely place to be either storm watching or enjoying the sunshine. Had afternoon tea on this occasion and it was delicious. I thought at £19 it was well priced. Sandwiches on good bread, lovely scones with excellent Jam and cream and delicious cakes. The pimms jelly was fantastic. Tea and bottled water included. You can ask for a box to take home the cakes you (inevitably!) won’t be able to eat. Parking free you just need to register your car.

We visited the Headland Hotel on Saturday having booked a table for 12 for lunch. I was asked to pay £120 deposit ( £10 per head) which I did and our table was in the Ballroom. The service wasn’t paticularly good and payment was a shambles. We were sent to three different tills to sort out our deposit which took ages. I found this visit to be so disappointing as we had recommended the hotel to our friends and our visit was to celebrate a birthday. I really dont think I’d recommend the hotel to anyone which is such a shame !

We regularly visit the Headland Hotel for coffee or a snack as it is right on our doorstep and drink in the terrace/conservatory area. Every time the staff have been friendly and polite but service has been frequently slow and we’ve been left wondering where our drinks are- especially when the staff are standing around talking. On this occasion, we came for a coffee for my father’s birthday (four of us). We ordered drinks and my mum noticed that her coffee wasn’t very warm and neither was my dad’s but we continued drinking anyway. We then ordered more drinks and were again left wondering where they were. When they arrived, the waiter seemingly ignored the empty cups left on our table even though we asked if he would like to take them. He didn’t respond and walked away. The coffees were exceptionally cold this time and we each tried and all said how they weren’t even slightly warm. As a the waitress was walking past, my mother said in passing how the coffees weren’t very warm. Rather than acknowledging this and apologising, the waitress became defensive and told us that they couldn’t be cold as they use boiling water and the cups are warmed and the coffee comes out piping hot. She didn’t want to know and brushed it off and didn’t seem at all bothered. We were offered more but politely declined to only be told that our coffees couldn’t be cold anyway. Rather than becoming defensive, it would have been nicer had the waitress apologised and took our comment into account instead of denying it altogether and not even slightly caring. Such a shame.

My husband and I booked a last minute afternoon tea here and were not disappointed. The views are easily the best views in the area. The afternoon tea was delicious and there was so much provided we couldn't get through it all... luckily they gave us a box to take the rest home in so we could enjoy it later on in the day. The service was fantastic, everyone was so attentive and very friendly. We were curious to find out more information about the filming of The Witches whilst we were there, they gave us some information and explained a little bit about which rooms were used for filming etc which was really useful. We really enjoyed sitting in the sunshine whilst enjoying a drink afterwards in their outside seating area, it was absolute heaven to enjoy the views with a glass of wine. We will be returning for our wedding anniversary in September and look forward to enjoying the stunning views once again.

A family group of us, staying at the Hotel and cottages thought it would be easy for us all to dine at The Terrace. The room was very hot at 6pm. We got the staff to crack open a window. That helped a bit. The service was unbearably slow. Our food was good but the heat in the room and slow service ruined the dinner. After we had finished our meal we waited over 15 minutes for 2 sweets. Ice cream and a brownie. I could understand this if it was a Baked Alaska or some sweet requiring extra time. If you want the great view of Fistral Beach and aren’t pressed for time perhaps you might like it.

Dined at the Terrace tonight and were delighted to have what must be the best sunset table - such a treat to watch the sun go down in front of us. The 2 main courses were polar opposites - apparently a brand new menu started today. Husband had fish which was great, but the veg it was on was too oily. I had a vegan curry that was absolutely fantastic - every bit as good as something from a specialist Indian restaurant (I'm usually dubious of curries made by a kitchen producing a variety of dishes). We then had the cheeseboard which COULD have been ok, but was served straight from the fridge which - as all cheese fans know - totally kills the flavour & texture. Such a shame as that's a simple thing to get right. Staff were all friendly and efficient.

Went as a couple for Sunday brunch in the bar area. I very very rarely feel moved to leave a negative review. But the Headland really earned this. Ordered eggs royale. It was pretty much cold when it arrived and the hollandaise sauce was like glue. My wife is a vegan. They could only offer toast. Which was basic sliced white bread. She asked for marmalade and got apricot.

Food is of very good quality and the setting is less formal than Samphire Restaurant. Wine prices are a little steep though they are the same as in Samphire (so that there is no differentiation between the two I suppose). We had the hake and the fish+chips - both were excellent and £15 each - portion size was generous.

The Terrace at the Headland is more relaxed than the awesome restaurant, (which you need to try the food is simply amazing credit to the chef and there brigade) food is excellent nevertheless if you see the bar manager Christie she will be pleased to help you out, but please try her cocktails especially the gin based ones dangerously wonderful as is all the bar staff even Thi...... sorry for the spelling but he knows who is is, had a great time chatting to them both and even though it was busy as a guest you would never know, now that is one thing and one thing only, great staff, as I have already said, from time of booking with the fantastic Lucy all the way to saying goodbye to Tim at the front of house, thank you all for this happy hotel as it is you all the staff that makes this wonderful old building into a premier hotel with out all of you there simply wouldn’t be the Headland hotel. For the memory’s you all gave to myself and my family not forgetting Oscar the lab,

Visited The Terrace twice during our stay. On the first we had the seafood sharing platter to start, which was FAB but our Rib-eye steak and Halibut plates after were sublime. We ate far slower than usual because didn't want it to end! The second occasion was a 'night-before-my-birthday' celebration and was surprised with Champagne and a quickly rustled up meringue 'cake' with candle in the bar. Oh and the obligatory 'Happy Birthday'... The staff in the bar and restaurant were brilliant, very attentive and all with a smile. Looking forward to returning soon.

We went to this restaurant for a lunch and the view across the bay after a stormy day. The lunch was fabulous. A wonderful pumpkin soup followed by an outstanding 'superfood' salad with a nice cornish draught beer. Despite being well fed we went for the rhubarb and lemon meringue.Superb. The service was excellent as was the view of the rough sea and the bird of prey hunting for it's lunch. I will say it was quite reasonable, £36.00, for the two of us. An excellent couple of hours.

We booked a spooky Halloween afternoon tea for our family, I have a 5 and 7 year old. We were sold the experience on the premis that the Witches has been filmed at the hotel and that the place would be decked out to make it a really fun, spooky experience for the kids. Upon arriving, at our 5pm slot (originally 4.45pm but they asked us to move times) the staff were putting things away! The staff, who you would expect to have made an effort to dress up, we’re in fact in their normal attire. Our kids had gone to a massive effort to dress as witches to stay in theme, not one single person commented on it. Other people were also enjoying afternoon tea, no kids and not dressed up, we felt a little foolish to say the least. The venue was poor, little or no effort to make it look spooky, bar two small pumpkins on the table (not carved, just two small pumpkins) and some cotton on the table with a plastic spider!

Took my mother to the Headland Hotel for lunch for the final day of her holiday. We ordered the crab sandwiches, which said where served with an Advocado and Orange salad. Open or closed I was asked when I ordered with no other explanation. I ordered closed with a portion of garlic and rosemary fries. We were very disappointed and I was quite cross when I left at the staffs attitude. The bread was dry (stale) there was little crab filling. There was no Advocado or Orange -just a small bit of rocket! My mother complained to the waiter who said he would tell the manager. As we waited and waited we ate the chips, few crisps and rocket. We were left with a pile of stale bread. Eventually I went inside and told another staff member (one who took our order) of how disappointing the food was and that you would expect better from such a prestigious hotel. He just said sorry and offered no other explanation. As I paid I told another staff member of how appalled we were at these sandwiches. We then left £34 lighter in wallet feeling frustrated, disappointed and upset that her last day had been spoilt. I have lived in Newquay over 30 years and have eaten crab sandwiches in many cafes and hotels- some certainly not as prestigious as the Headland, but all served much better crab sandwiches and were much cheaper. What a rip off?
