We have eaten here several times and it can be very good. Today, however, I took a party of guests for Sunday lunch and it was below its usual standard: the roast beef was almost inedible, roast potatoes undercooked, puddings small and service was moody from the regular waitress and service slow. Repeat business in restaurants is about consistency and I hope this place gets back on track.

We went to this charming village to see the Thames Head, on the way we noticed this convenient pub outside the railway station of Kemble. We went inside and got some food which included their Sunday roast and Chicken goujons were phenomenal along with their local ales and tap lemonade. The staff are also the friendliest staff we have came across in a pub. Highly recommend this hidden gem in the Cotswolds. 5/5.

We really wanted to love the roast here, after reading the reviews we thought we were in for a treat. However, as per the vast majority of roasts out, we were disappointed. I asked if the three meat roast would mean it was huge and when we were told it wasn’t, most of us went for that. One slice of ok beef no bigger than the palm of my hand, Chicken breast that had an almost barbecued flavour and then the gammon. Or should I say rasher of bacon! I kid you not, it literally was a rasher of bacon, most odd meat I’ve had in a roast! All the accomplishments, bar the cauli/broccoli cheese were underwhelming. Very good gravy though.

Having just been for a wild swim in the nearby Thames I needed something to warm up. The staff were very friendly there and went out of their way to help. Harriet did me a nice soup with croutons and a mulled wine. They even put up with me warming my socks up on the radiator! Handy being just a stones throw from the railway station too!

After a lovely walk to see the Source of the Thames, we came across this pub for a lovely lunch and were welcomed with a friendly smile! The chicken wings and onion rings were delicious and the staff were so friendly and chatty! We were even offered a lift back to Ewen where are car were parked which we gladly accepted because of the rain! So kind of the owner :) Would absolutely recommend and seems like they do lots of events and social activities. If only we lived closer I would come back!

We had tackled the local footpaths for 3 to 4 hours throughout the morning so were ready for a rest and sustenance. Our group of 12 had arrived in a number of cars which were comfortably parked in the ample car park ready for a 10.00am start to our meet. We collected drinks from the bar on arrival and were shown to our prepared tables where our meal orders were taken. Individually prepared meals were delivered in quick time by friendly accommodating staff. Overall a good dining experience.

Can be hit and miss, don't take any notice of the food signs as you can plan to come, be sat down to be told the kitchen is closed at 3pm on a Saturday! No notices online or around the pub to advise! Didn't stay for a drink just left and went elsewhere. 2 members of staff walked past me waiting to be served whilst holding a food menu, didn't smile or acknowledge or again...advise there is no food on. Seems they serve food as and when they can be bothered. won't be back as this is not the first time it's happened and you can't plan for it.

My two friends and I had booked at another restaurant and because of flooding we couldn’t get there. My friends had to catch a train to return to London from Kemble station. We cancelled our booking we had made and arrived at the Tavern only to be told that they were full. We asked one of the staff in the car park (Becky) if she could think of anywhere we could go with limit time and not too far. She explained somewhere we could try avoiding the flooding. Just as we were driving out, she called us and said would you mind eating outside? When we agreed she said I will make it happen. We managed a roast dinner and two bottles of wine. Such kindness when the kitchen was under pressure. The food was OK but the reception and the staff were wonderful.

Went there for Sunday lunch for a roast with the family. Nice pub, good service. Food very average. Looked good when served, but lacked any interest!!! I did ask the landlady prior to ordering, if the beef is a joint & carved off the bone, she said yes and it wasn't, it was pre sliced. Pre sliced beef you get at most pubs and lacks flavour. The veg option looked good, again no flavour. Sad to say not the best meal. Oh well, you live and learn.

Had the misfortune of having Sunday lunch at this Pub. We chose the beef and asked for it well done which it was. The meat was full of gristle and basically inedible. It came with sage and onion, I think, stuffing(?), shredded carrot(?) and cabbage. Not conventional nor pleasant. The only things that were good were the roast and mash potato and the additional pigs in blankets. Having travelled from various parts of S.England to meet, only 2 meals of the 6 were good and it spoilt a much anticipated meeting of friends. We will not be back !

We came last night for the steak night (28/02/19), two steaks with two (decent) drinks for a set price. And they did not disappoint. Both our steaks were cooked exactly how we asked for them (excuse the pun but that is rare). Chips were fantastic, and they were more than accommodating when I changed my order slightly. The atmosphere was warm & cosy we had a lovely window seat cubby area. We were allowed to bring the dog which is so important to us that she is as welcome as we are. What topped the evening for me, was the melt in the mouth chocolate pudding, but above all else, the outstanding service from our waitress, Jenna. Perro amable

We met the family for lunch before going for a helicopter ride at Kemble Airport. I had no previous knowledge of any prior history and arrived at the large car park facing the pub. It is most certainly up market, but not to the point where it might be sniffy or cold. A friendly member of staff showed us to our corner table from where surveyed the pleasant décor and fittings. It is a warm, cosy and friendly pub with professional staff. On to the lunches! Three had the roast beef, comprising thickly cut slices of very lean (and pretty rare!) of top-side presented over roast potatoes and topped with a Yorkshire pudding. A large bowl of accompanying vegetables quickly followed, giving us three lovely and filling lunched. My daughter, being vegetarian was not so fortunate as there were no veggi options on the menu and worse still, the roast potatoes were cooked in goose fat meaning she could not have potatoes either. This is a serious omission that needs rectifying urgently. We were let down again by their faulty coffee machine so we ended up having instant coffee served with plastic milk! Not good. On these two issues I have marked the rating down to average: they must try harder! But that said we did enjoy the lunch and the pub in general

At last someone's been able to invest in the Tavern to give it the lift it deserved. There's a new carpet! New furniture! Chic decor! And a friendly new landlord with a very good chef. We were very cautious in our food choices since it was our first visit for some time, but were richly rewarded. Fish and chips, a burger - they could have been very ordinary, but I can honestly say that the burger (in a classy ciabatta bun) was the best I've tasted in years, with a good deep flavour from the meat, the cheese and the excellent bacon. The Tavern is our local - it will be lovely to try each of the theme night in turn. But I think that when the good news gets round, I shall probably have to book a table. Or use their new take-away menu. Well done everyone!

Wow! Just walked into a totally empty pub waitress said she can't cook me anything as the food is saved for the people that have booked! What a joke! It's 1740, not one person in the place, avoid at all costs!

What a way to run a business. Signs off the adjacent main road directs motorists to good food etc. Attempted to visit for dinner only to be told the landlord was away at a birthday and there was no food being served. This indicates it's just not being run as a serious business. This is such a shame as the previous landlord had started to make a go of this pub after it had been pretty dire for many years but have now moved on. You would think the owners - Arkells Brewery- would step in to rescue their own reputation. More in sorrow than anger - go elsewhere.

Family of five arrives 1.30pm for Sunday lunch, having seen pub's sign advertising amazing food. Walks in, barman turns back and walks away. Charming welcome - not. Family takes seat at table next to another family tucking into Sunday roasts. Dad approaches surly barman who has now returned:- Afternoon, might we have some lunch menus please?' - 'No food'- 'I'm sorry, what do you mean?'- 'Don't serve lunch'- 'Er . . . but these people are eating lunch'- 'Yeah, but they booked, see'- 'But you're only half full'- *barman shrugs*Dad laughs out loud, take family back to car and drives to proper pub offering actual hospitality

Very grubby inside and out, tired and dated decor. Unwelcoming, unfriendly bar staff. Disappointing given the location and proximity to the station in this lovely area. Better pubs around.

Called in with a friend for lunch today! The couple that run the pub were extremely friendly and the pub had a lovely atmosphere. I had a ploughmans which was presented beautifully and was plentiful. My friend had gammon which was huge and had the biggest onion rings I have ever seen (she doesn't like them so it would have been rude not to have helped her out!). Will definitely visit again - going to try the Sunday carvery next! See you soon!!

Ten of us descended on The Tavern Inn for lunch on a Monday. We had let them know we were coming and they had arranged a special board for us (well they said it was for us!) , as well as offering the main menu. The specials were priced at £5-50 and were excellent value for money!! Sadly one or two items from the main menu were unavailable so I didn't get the lasagna I craved!!! My wife chose the cauliflower cheese from the specials board, came with peas and chips and she declared herself well pleased with it, three others in the party also chose that one and all were happy with their choice. I had the scampi from the specials board and again it was very well cooked and filling. A pint of Wiltshire Gold bitter, a large tonic and lemonade and the two meals cost £17-20p and represented good value for money. One of the guys in the party chose a gammon with all the trimmings from the main menu and it was enormous, including three of the largest onion rings i have ever seen served!!! This was our first time at this pub, it will certainly not be the last!!

There is no doubt this pub offers a friendly welcome. It is very homely and the food is acceptable. All it needs is a little updating in terms of decor and it would be awesome. The bar staff are friendly and quick to serve. The chef stayed a little later to cook our food for a delayed member of our party, which was a kind gesture too. We had fish and chips and a jacket potato with tuna. It was really absolutely fine, just not anything special. If you want and expect a box standard British pub then this is it, the benchmark for all others....not great but not bad either. It's success comes from the location. Being right next to the exit for London trains with a beer garden is always a recipe for success but I'm sure the locals are a little more discerning and a bit of TLC on the decor wouldn't go amiss.

Our party of six ladies agreed that our Christmas meals here were the best out of the many we had been lucky enough to enjoy this year. Our table was beautifully laid with a Christmas table cloth and crackers and service was speedy even with another party of around twenty in the same room. Our meals were steaming hot, perfectly cooked and plentiful. This was my first visit to this country pub and our group will certainly hope to return again for their annual outing. In the meantime, I certainly hope to return soon with my husband.

This pub is a traditional country pub with a warm friendly welcome. I've just moved into the area and visited the place now for the fourth time. From the moment I opened the door I was greeted with a welcome well beyond what I normally expect. The pub has a lovely roaring fire and the décor is what is to be expected in a traditional hostelry. There is a combination of antique and new tables and a well fitted bar. The food was excellent so much so I took my family and sister to The Tavern and they were equally impressed. The beer has Casque Mark accreditation and I can not fault the service. I will be making several more trips here on my own and with my family to enjoy the atmosphere, welcome, food and the beer. All I can say is that the new tenants, who I believe moved in this Summer know how to run this great Tavern to perfection. this is a great place to visit for either a drink or some food. The carvery is excellent value.

A group of us had a Sunday lunch here. No starters on offer but carvery and pud for £9.99 very reasonable. 2 choices of meats. Plus lots of veg, stuffing, Yorkshire puds etc so a lovely selection. Puds all very nice and again lots of choices. The toilets and pub could do with a bit of a refresh. We would return.

Me and a friend recently used the Tavern Inn to camp overnight for the Tough Mudder event in cirencester. When we arrived we were greeted and shown where we could pitch our tent. The staff were all very helpful and friendly with a very relaxing vibe in the inn itself. The food was good value for money and delicious. The pub was clean and perfectly located near the train station. We shall defintely be returning again!

Never known anything like it. It's a struggle to get the landlord/lady to even be bothered to pour a pint. Stinks of grease and cabbage throughout the pub and there is no point even going near the toilets. Needs a serious re thinking. Won't be going near until things are sorted. Shame as its a prime location for getting a train to the area.

A most excellent lunch served by incredibly polite and lovely staff. I so enjoyed the food and was mightily impressed with the lovely team Ionela, the manager, who could not do more to make one welcome and Ciaron, Antonina and Safiya all of whom was just so professional, polite and helpful. Absolutely faultless. My thanks to all. Excellent.

We stayed in SotW for a friends wedding locally. It appeared everyone had come upto the Cotswolds for wedding that weekends at the White Hart was our 5th attempt at finding a spot for dinner - turns out 5th time lucky it was! We had lovely service throughout dinner, fantastic food in a really lovely dining room. Would strongly recommend, nice selection of drinks and main meals, could well be a lovely spot for dinner for two or small groups as well visiting the area.

A lovely tea shop on the High St. I sat outside the front on the limited pavement seating. The staff were lovely and the food well presented. The pasty was though expensive and there was no wow factor. The ice bun was heavy and sticky. The coffee was delicious. Would return but not spend so much.

A decent hot chocolate and a sweet man behind the counter, but the individual chocolates are not made on site and are overpriced.
