Beautiful food and very caring. We had the prawn and salmon platter. Absolutely gorgeous. But what really stood out was the care and concern shown to a customer with a medical incident. The lovely staff could not do enough for him, calming him down and ensuring his comfort. Even boxing up his lunch to eat at home for dinner. So impressed. Even though we live in Devon, we will be back.

Despite a minor issue with our booking ( not the hotel’s fault) we were very quickly upgraded to a vacant cottage they had available. We had a lovely meal on the Saturday night in the hotel and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. We were made to feel so welcome we asked if we could stay another night. We decided to eat at another restaurant in Wooler on the Sunday and the owned of the hotel even arranged for one of her friends to give us a lift. If this is not the friendliest place in England it must be close. All the staff were amazing but a special mention to Elaine who went above and beyond to look after us and even allowed me to get a couple of their amazing steak pies to take home with me.

Gloomy, tatty, grubby , old, unloved pub/restaurant. Asked for a pint of San Miguel but it didn’t pull properly! Asked for a wine list, but there isn’t one. There are just 4 wines to choose from. One particularly was a Hardys Cabernet Sov at a cost of £25! £6 in any supermarket! Lunch menu is limited and very average. Definitely not a revisit. It needs a new lease of life to keep it going !

Friendly staff but I’m sorry to say we were disappointed with the hotel room & breakfast. The room was very small and tired looking. Same with the bathroom and it took a good 5 minutes for the water to warm up. We didn’t have the cooked breakfast so can’t comment on that but the cereal options were sugary and highly processed. No fresh fruit options -just tinned prunes & grapefruit slices which seems like an outdated breakfast choice to me. The orange juice was off and the coffee lukewarm. We stayed here for one night whilst doing the St Cuthbert’s Way and it was our most expensive night at £148 but definitely the worst place we stayed in. If we’d only paid £60 I wouldn’t have left a bad review but for the money we paid this was very poor. I’m sure there must be better options in Wooler. I wish I’d done more research before booking.

We always head for this place when staying anywhere near, our visit today was as good as ever. The place is a bit dated but very clean, the staff were great and the food good. I had the veg. curry a man size helping of curry in a Balti type dish, a big spoonful of boiled rice and a chunk of pitta bread with a big dollop of chutney , the curry was just right for me (not too hot) the veg was cooked to perfection. My wife had the soup Broccoli and stilton served with a nice piece of crusty bread, this also went down well. we had 2 soft drinks and my wife had Tea for 1, the total cost was just over £25 a real bargain for what we had.

What a lovely, warm welcoming place to stay! I stayed one night as part of my hike on St Cuthbert's Way. Arrived wet and muddy, with my similarly wet dog. They couldn't have been more welcoming. Room was clean and had everything I needed. It was curry night, which was really tasty, and they had some great real ale on tap. Breakfast was similarly served with warmth and an extra sausage for the dog! Old fashioned, friendly, perfect! Wooler is also a lovely spot for walking.

We initially popped in for a drink on our first afternoon in Wooler with our dog, Glen, and as it was late February we were glad of the open fire in the bar/restaurant. This is a quaint, old, traditional coaching inn which probably hasn't changed much over the decades. Full of lots of charm and memorabilia from across its history. 2 cask ales from Hadrian Border Brewery available; Tyneside Blonde and Farne Island, both lovely. We returned on the Tuesday evening for dinner. The first disappointment was that the "pie of the day" had already sold out at the start of evening dinner service. Perhaps that should have rung some alarm bells. We both decided to opt for a Northumbrian Burger, however these turned out to be a disappointment. Usually we can guage any pub by the quality of it's ale and it's ability to cook a burger. Can't fault TA on the ale, but the burger was, chewy, tasteless and if it hadn't been for the cheese it would have been overall very bland. From discussions overheard at another table it seems that the regular chef was off, so whoever was in the kitchen let the place down, I'm afraid. As we were spending a week in Wooler this could easily have been a venue for another evening meal, but sadly not after this sub-par visit. At least the front of house staff and the beer were nice

Unplanned lunch on holiday this week. Aimed for Wooler and saw this hotel as we turned towards the town centre. Looked very pleasant, a traditional hotel with large rear garden and car park. We were welcomed and served by the lovely Anne. The setting was very pleasnt and relaxing. We witnessed dogs being welcomed and being handed a doggy treat. Really enjoyed the food, accompanied by a splendid pint of ale, even managed to share a cheesecake pudding (not a small portion and more than enough for two). Booked to return for breakfast on the return home but sadly could not make it in time. No hesitation in commending the Tankerville, a very happy find indeed

Staff were very friendly and helpful. One of the party was vegan and so the staff asked the chef what he could make. A shame there was nothing on the menu without having to ask. The chef came up with 2 options. All meals were good. Again had to ask about vegan desserts and were told the sorbet was suitable. Altogether a very pleasant meal. It could just be improved by updating the decor and furniture and including more dietary information on the menu.

We popped in on a Sunday evening on the off chance they could feed us. We, including our dog, were warmly greeted and seated in the bar area. Yes it is a little outdated and the tables seemed very little against the chairs but the staff were all really friendly and efficient. We had the three courses for £15.95 (i think it was) and yes the portions were a little smaller than other places but for the price they were really good. My partner had beef and other than wishing for a little more gravy (he didn't want to ask) he declared it lovely. I had fishcakes to start and then bream for main - both were really lovely. My main was a really large sized meal and very tasty. My only comment was the prawns in the sauce were chewy and therefore left but the fish and mash combo (not one I would normally choose) was a delight. The puds were good pub puds. We would highly recommend.

Called in on holiday for lunch. The place looks very good from the outside, and the menu looked ok. Sadly it was not a great experience. We had catch of the day which turned out to be battered haddock. The fish was a good size and enjoyable, but the chips were a dissapointment, portion wise (there was a small and i mean small handfull) maybe 10 chunky wedges. The peas were not great either and were left after a quick taste. My roast of the day turned out to be a roast chicken sandwich with gravy, salad and again a small, small handfull of chips. The salad was good, but breadbun for the chicken was dry and the chicken again like the chips was in a small portion. For the price both dishes left us feeling very dissapointed. Decor wise the place needs updating as it feels very much like something from the 80s. Staff wise the young lady that served us was very polite but clearly very very new, and had to keep dissapearing every 2 minutes to consult senior staff. All in all needs upgrading, better food and a serious look into its prices to portion sizes.

The staff, typical of Northumbrians, are friendly and welcoming.A small dining room is delightful with crisp white table linen, good cutlery and glassware. It provides for an excellent breakfast choice which can be adapted to suit any guests tastes. lovely food and atmosphere, very friendly staff, the sea bass was delicious. if I had any criticism it would be that the music was not in-keeping with the hotel and needed to be more background than disco.

Good breakfasts and excellent suppers, stayed at Tankerville for 3 nights. We were very pleased with the quality and value of the meals on offer, the usual pub favourites plus daily blackboard specials

Visited on 31st August at 6pm, 4 adults and 2 children. All the tables in the bar where we ate had young children on them so it was quite a noisey meal. The main course was fine, nothing special but it was edible. I'm not convinced all the food was freshly made to order. The children's meals didn't come with any veg or salad which I found very odd. My children eat veg and I certainly like them to have it with a meal. I had the strawberry tart for dessert which was not good and was clearly not home made. The strawberries were mushy like they had been defrosted. Staff were good. Prices ok, maybe slightly more than I would expect based on the food seemingly not being freshly made to order. Worth a try if you are in the area and just want an ok pub meal.

I eat here with my family (8 in total) on Sunday, 27th August 2017. We had a table booked for 7 and we all enjoyed the Sunday roast. Some members of my party enjoyed the deep fried Bree to start, and they all said it was fantastic. We were all split between the roasts, some had pork, some had lamb and the rest had beef. My younger sister opted for the chicken strips and chips as she is not a big fan of roasts. I had the beef, and I have to say, it wasn't too good. The beef was incredibly chewy, and had been smothered in gravy which made it taste even worse. The Yorkshire pudding was burnt, and tasted like it had been kept warm for ages. The one roast potatoe that it came with was good though, as were the new potatoes that came with the rest of the vegetables. The other vegetables were broccoli and cauliflower which were okay, but a little too crunchy for my liking. For dessert I had the chocolate and orange torte, which was delicious. The staff were friendly and chatty enough, and service was good. All in all, it is an average place to eat in.On a side note, my parents stayed here a few years ago, in room 7. And during the night, my mum awoke to seeing a solider standing at the end of the bed, but he disappeared when she looked at his head!

Four of us had a lovely pub meal. The portions were very generous and the local beer was good. Service was also good. The menu was not too big and everything was cooked too order which impressed us. The food was in line with it's fair pricing. Not top quality food but the prices were very fair and the food was very good value. The website it worth checking beforehand as I had a good idea of what I was picking before I had even got there! The toilets were clean and we had our coffee in the lovely garden even though it was getting dark.

My husband and I went to the Tankerville Arms for a meal for our wedding anniversary on 9 Aug 2017. We had drove past earlier in the day and it looked lovely from the outside. The interior doesn't live up to the exterior. We went into the bar area and we saw print out menus on clipboards on the bar. The barmaid saw we were pursuing the menu and asked if we were wanting to dine. We said yes and she asked if we wanted to dine in the bar or the restaurant. It being our wedding anniversary we obviously opted for the restaurant and she showed us to a table in the next room. We were then handed the exact same clipboard menus from the bar which had seen better days. We had anticipated a better menu, in appearance and contents, in the restaurant. No sooner had we been handed the menu the waitress came to take our orders. I hadn't decided and was torn between the rib eye steak and the fillet steak. Instead of the waitress giving us more time or even helping me make the decision she just stood over us silently notepad in hand. Feeling rushed my husband and I both decided to go for the fillet steak. We were asked how we would like our steaks cooked and we both opted for medium rare. She hurried off without taking our drink order so my husband had to go back through to the bar and ask for a bottle of Shiraz. Our meals finally arrived, what I noticed first was the quantity of vivid green frozen peas on our plates, they made up about 60% of our meal and at £24.95 each I was a little taken aback. The chips where bog standard oven chips served in a small metal basket and I have no idea what they had done to the mushrooms! I think they were dried ones which had been rehydrated. My husband yet again had to go through to the bar to ask if we could have steak knives as none had arrived with our meals. I cut into my steak and it was beyond well done as was my husbands. We were asked if everything was alright by the waitress and we pointed out that we had ordered medium rare steaks, not well done. She didn't ask if we would like fresh steaks cooked to our liking, but instead asked if we wouldn't prefer something else! As we had waited so long for our meal and we didn't really fancy anything else on the menu we attempted to persevere. Unfortunately our meals just weren't edible. Overcooked steak, frozen peas, weird mushrooms and oven chips just didn't cut it so we left most of our meals. To be fair they did knock the price of our first drinks (a coke and a gin and soda water) which we’d ordered on arrival and the price of one of our meals from our bill, which was very nice of them. But we hadn't gone out for a freebie, we had gone out for a delicious anniversary meal, which we didn't get.If the chef can not cook steaks as requested by the customer then perhaps don’t ask the customer how they would like them cooked or better take steak off the menu all together. For £24.95 each for an 8oz steak I would expect it to be cooked perfectly and accompanied by something a little more appealing than frozen and dried produce!

The staff were very friendly and the real ales were good. We stopped for two nights and found the room was quite plain and the en suite tiny for the money we paid but it was clean. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the only downside was there was seldom staff to serve behind the bar during the day.

Yet another memorable visit to this wonderful old hotel's restaurant and bar. A group of eight campers, we enjoyed real ales, fine wines and a selection of malts in the Copper Bar on a July Friday evening, followed by a booked table in the adjacent Chillingham Room the night after. My starter - grilled halloumi, and my main - chicken breast, stuffed with haggis, wrapped in bacon and smothered with peppercorn sauce were an absolute delight. My compatriots chose from across the extensive menu, all impressed by the quality, presentation and hearty portions presented. Staff very friendly and welcoming. This is how it should be. The residents seemed well contented too. Also recommend The Red Lion, just up the road at Milfield.Dave

We drove past this pub earlier in the day and thought we would return for Sunday lunch, all welcome including dogs and children, it was promised on the door! It sounded great so in we went, there was no one serving but we could hear the clatter of washing up in the kitchen, so we looked around the bar, after a few minutes the only customer in the bar told us to ring the bell that we never saw when we walked in........... After a few more minutes we could still hear washing up so we left, clearly there are no staff working in the bar or they cannot hear the bell, shame because it looked nice, we like reviewing good restaurants and pubs, we just never got the chance to

We eat here every few months because the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and relaxing and dogs are welcome in the bar. Sadly the food and service are very hit and miss. Last night was definitely a miss. It wasn't a great start: the Guinness was off, the ale kegs had been moved earlier and they couldn't get beer out of the taps. We ordered the chargrilled vegetables starter which we had really enjoyed on a previous visit, and a side dish mixed vegetables for our daughter. What a disappointment - the "chargrilled vegetables" were barely warmed and were merely peppers served on a bowl of salad. On the previous visit we had been served a great selection of vegetables perfectly cooked. We asked for last night's offering to be cooked through - when they were returned the rocket and salad were also grilled. The mixed vegetables for our daughter consisted of 3 pieces of parsnip, a huge bowl of mashed turnip, 3 new potatoes and 3 mini corn on the cob - nothing green, nothing leafy, nothing red. On the plus side we had good "sides" of chips and sweet potato fries. We couldn't bring ourselves to stay for anything else. The food presented was so poor we left wondering why ever we had chosen to risk another meal out at The Tanky and whether this really will be our last. I would give them less than one star, but the dog enjoyed his free gravy bones hugely so they deserve the minimum one.

My wife and I had driven past a few times, it looks good and we thought we'd give it a try, a bit of a mistake really. On the plus side it's dog friendly and the staff were welcoming enough. On the negative side I found it disappointing that the much publicised menu sheet didn't have my choice available and our eventual meal was probably the worse we'd had during our visit to Northumberland. My £15.00 piece of salmon could have been likened to a £2.50 slice from Tesco with a chilli toping, dry and very basic. Then there was a strange aroma in the dining area and the numerous flies. Sorry, shant be rushing back.

Nice little hotel bar right on the Main Street of Alnwick I had drink several times during our stay in Alnwick. Margaret had the chilli which she said was nice. I wasn’t hungry so had the potato skins which came with a barbecue sauce and garlic mayo, which were ok but out of a bottle.

The cafe prices are ludicrous. £3.45 for a toasted tea cake with barely any fruit in it is ridiculous as is a fiver for two cups of tea and £9 for a cooked breakfast!! The staff are not the most pleasant either. Sadly the shop and garden centre prices are way off the scale too compared to most other garden centres. Definitely would not recommend or revisit.
