Booked a for a special occasion then one hour before we were due to eat we were told by the restaurant that the booking was cancelled. No offer of any sort of compensation e.g money off a future booking, so clearly they don't want our custom. Therefore, we've cancelled our Christmas meal with them too.

Bedroom red hot no opening window, air conditioning unit that was really noisy and blew warm air around, cracked wash basin, broken toilet seat, when flushing toilet it backed up into the shower, food was terrible. No staff overnight we were told when we checked out (before 11am) to leave key in room door and leave by the fire escape. Bar closed at 10pm and all staff left the building. A very disappointing experience.

What a disaster! This review gets one star, purely because you can't give it zero. Perhaps there was a clue when we went in, as there were more staff than customers. Little to no effort by the bar staff, one of whome was sat on a stool behind the bar. "If you're wanting to eat just sit at a table and order at the bar" The menu available had little resemblance to what was on the website, just a single sheet of somewhat crumpled paper. Ordering at the bar was like a krypton factor challenge. Two meals, a pint of beer and a soda and lime? Oh no, the young man on the bar couldn't find a button to press for soda and lime, so he offered lemonade? OK, can that be a lemon and lime? Erm, no, still no button to press! Eventually another staff member came to the rescue telling him to press lemonade and then a shot of lime?????? We went for the hand made steak and ale pie, and the beer battered fish and chips. Not sure who's hands made it?! The pie was very small for the £15.50 price tag. Accompanied with barely one serving spoon of mashed potato and less than a spoon of peas. The mash had been very careful manipulated with a pattern to try and throw you off how little there was. The pie crust was very close to being burnt and was so hard it could have had a better role in filling potholes in the road. Within the pie I did find all 4 tiny pieces of steak submerged in a slime that I think was supposed to be gravy. The teaspoon full of extra gravy in a thimble sized jug was pretty tasteless. On the plus side, the peas were OK, ish. The fish and chips were served accompanied with their very own oil slick. It was actually running across the plate. The oil fully soaked a napkin which had to be placed under the tartar sauce pot to stop it doing its own version of dancing on ice! To make matters worse, the oil was putrid, dirty and smelly. The tartar sauce was also sour and inedible. Again not worth the £14.95 price tag. We made our disappointment known to the young man, who simply gave a little giggle as he took the plates away, saying "I'll let chef know". A young lady did then come to apologise for the food and offered a couple of free desserts to compensate. With hindsight, we should have cut and run, probably to Lidl. However, we were persuaded to have the desert. I know, I know, hand made sticky toffee pudding was probably asking for trouble. The other deserts was cheesecake, surely you can't get that wrong? Oh he'll yes!!! The sticky toffee pudding had clearly been nuked by chef Mike (microwave). The toffee sauce was splattered up the sides of the dish. The outside of the pudding was barely warm but was rather tough, a little like foam rubber, and the inside was glowing like Mt Vesuvius. So, you might ask what about the cheesecake? That too had been given to chef Mike!!! Who the hell serves hot cheesecake????? The Plough at Alnwick! This too was brought to the attention of the staff, who's response was, that's how we serve it, don't you like it? I would tell you our response, but I doubt it would clear censorship criteria! What a pitiful disgrace to the catering industry this place is. There is no excuse for lazy, incompetent and inept staff, who have clearly given up. Please put the paying public out of their misery, close the place and turn it into a Tesco express, the quality would be worlds apart.

The staff and atmosphere are still great, but The Plough changed the menu and it has gone downhill. They used to have amazing dinners, steak platters, and risottos, but now the menu only contains simple fried food. The adults at the table ordered the whole-tail scampi, but it was just frozen fried popcorn shrimp. My eight year old ended up eating them with ketchup

So we popped in for lunch yesterday . Decor lovely, staff very pleasant. Food very average and small portions. My partner had Pie , chips, peas and gravy ,the chips were frozen ones, the pie looked like it had been bought from the butchers and a tiny jug of gravy . I had lasagna which was very bland , the side salad was limp , had to ask for a dressing , was brought a tiny bowl and he said thats all we have. Not a good experience and will definately never be returning .

We were looking for somewhere for a nice meal out. We went to the downstairs bar / restaurant here. We were made to feel really welcome and the atmosphere was lovely. Even though there's not currently a huge choice on the menu, Hannah helped us pick out a couple of GF options and when the food came, it was all brilliant, tasty and piping hot! The service (Rosie and Hannah) was excellent and a main course, desserts and two drinks, each, for two people was under £60 so all good! Will definitely come again.

Went for a quick lunch one Sunday. The service from the guy behind the bars was super, very friendly and chatty. That’s pretty much where it ends. Food was pretty much like something I would make at home. Lasagna wasn’t the best and the limp salad wasn’t the best side to have. Hubby had the steak and ale pie which again wasn’t the greatest. Would defo choose somewhere else in Alnwick as there’s loads to choose from.

Thoroughly enjoyed our time there and would return as certainly no complaints about the food standards or the service.

Joke of a place, said they had space on a Sunday evening to we arrived was told that there'd be a wait for the food but not too long, over an hour later our starters arrived, we were then informed that there was no rice left over an hour later! If they'd had told us earlier we would have been able to find somewhere else to go but being a Sunday it's very difficult, we left and still had to pay for the starters and drinks. Awful customer service and now we're left with nowhere to go.

We were told there would be a little wait on the food as a big table had just ordered. Didn't realise that wait would be an hour to get a starter. I had to ask how long it would be after 50+ minutes. We had our starter which was decent only to be told 10 minutes later there is no rice for the tikka massala that was ordered. Over 1 hour, to let us know the main dish has no rice... how? I don't understand how it took an hour to realise there is no rice, i mean theres a shop round the corner that sells rice, in that hour, could have got rice, cooked it 6 times over and had no issue. Very poor.

We visited on bank holiday Sunday and had pre-booked a table. That table was actually in the bar area not sure why as the restaurant appeared to have space. The system was a bit haphazard though as some walk-ins were told there was no tables for 90 minutes yet other people just randomly walked in, sat at a table and were served regardless. Food was good, although my garden peas looked a bit tired, overall our meals were very nice. No proper americano coffee just black coffee and tea is just a teabag in a mug which unfortunately I'm too fussy about and so had to leave it. Staff were very busy (possibly not enough on the rota for a busy bank holiday) but managed to be polite and make sure we had everything we needed. I'll definitely come back, much better experience than in other restaurants in the town.

Not a good experience at all. Service was extremely slow. We were informed there would be 20/25 minute wait for food but ended up waiting nearly an hour. We were not informed that they had a temporary chef as theirs was off until later on. Our food arrived and the wraps were cold and one half on contained one piece of chicken. We sent them back and they came back out with only half a wrap back instead of the whole thing and it was clear it had been microwave to warm up.

Came in here for an evening meal and a few drinks with my partners. Friendly, welcoming and hospitable staff made us comfortable and engaged in pleasant conversation with us. The drinks were nice and the place was spotless too. I had the "slow-cooked beef lasagne, red wine & tomato sauce, topped with Cheddar and pesto, dressed salad", whilst my partner had the "double ‘Beyond Meat’ plant burger, smoked Applewood vegan cheese, caramelised onion chutney". Both meals were stunning, well presented and tasted fresh. If I had to be truthful, I didn't find the salad all too great, but it's only an accompaniment to the main dish. A wonderful place with good food, drinks and people. If you're visiting Alnwick, it's a nice place to stop off and unwind.

It was such a limited menu and we asked why - apparently they are closing the place down, so really all there is to eat is whatever is in the fridge or freezer. Felt for the waitress having to deal with all customers until shut down. I had fish and chip and partner ordered a burger. Fish ok but burger a shrivelled up mess which got sent back. We should have left once we knew there were problems but didn't. Shame really.

We went to the Plough on the basis of a recommendation from friends who visited a couple of years ago and really wish we had double checked online reviews! The menu was very limited and even then a couple of things weren't available including simple stuff like sauces which could have been bought from the local co-op. The waitress wasn't exactly welcoming and tended to plonk plates and glasses down on the table often slopping stuff. I don't know who was cooking but their signature dish was chips - except the thick cut ones which were undercooked - most everything else was over cooked. If we hadn't arranged to meet a group of friends there we would have left as soon as we saw the menu.

When we arrived, the first floor room wasn't available as requested as husband is 88 yrs old with some difficulty on stairs with a cane. Ended up on 3rd floor, with 40 steps to negotiate. Room pleasant but bathrooms had no soap - the dispensers were broken, there was only a nice large bath towel but no hand towel. The toilet wouldn't flush properly, the shower & hand sink wouldn't drain. We had booked 2 nights, 1 single & 1 double room. It came to well over £500. No breakfast was included or even available. The staff were unable to make tea or coffee as the machines were "broken". When we returned the next day after a day of site seeing, the rooms had not been serviced. This was brought to the attention of the owner/ manager. His comment was that it was only done after 3 days! We had paid a premium price for these rooms so expectation was reasonably high. When I went to go out for an early morning walk, 7:45, we were locked in by an alarmed fire door.I got out by a rickety, unstable fire escape, totally unsuitable for a disabled person. Then it couldn't get back in. Finally got in thru a service door at back but there was no apparent staff . Everything was locked up. After calling out for someone, a very young woman(16) appeared . She had arrived to open up. She was able to disarm the alarm so I could return to our room. This was one of the most undesirable hotels ever in my experience. It was supposed to be 4 star.

We took family to stay for 2 nights on 10 May 24. There was no breakfast and coffee machine in bar was broken. Both rooms were dirty with mould round shower. Water was left in coffee machine in room and old dirty coffee pods left in. Duvets were shoved in wardrobe taking up space and would get dirty. I complained to manager who said Landlord would phone me. Apparently cleaners only come in every 3rd day. How do you get coffee replenished and toilet roll if needed. All in all the whole place needs refurbishing. We spent a lot of money which was definitely not worth it. We were given a key to let ourselves in and out of fire exit as no one on site at certain times. Won't be going again.

A tale of two half's... Order for drink taken quickly enough at the bar, however the server didn't know how to properly pull a pint, just a pint of TT Landlord so nothing special. She ended up leaving it 2/3rds full on the bar and went off to serve a local. I asked another lady at the bar to help me and she quickly and professionally finished topping it up. I ordered food at the same time, it was delivered without delay and was very nice, however no cutlery or condiments were brought with it and it took an age for the same poor pint pourer to bring them to me. There was no atmosphere in the place just a constant trail of young locals coming to the bar for rounds. I wasn't asked at anytime if my food was ok, fortunately it was, so there's a good chef. I spoke to the lady who topped my pint up and it turns out she was the tenant or owner until recently and her husband is the chef, so it was obvious they have the skills needed, unfortunately it wasn't the same for the other staff... Disappointing and would be terrible if it wasn't for the food, &20+ for burger and a pint, you'd expect better, it's not a Spoon's...

Disappointed as the reviews and the menu online looked fantastic. The menu we received was a basic one with very little choice, I asked if they had another menu like the one online but that is all they had. The service was incredibly slow, there was about fifteen minutes between myself and my wife’s order being received. The food was below average, especially the dessert, my wife had a brownie which was all hard round the edges (most likely being put in a microwave for too long). The service was poor as we were in the restaurant for almost three hours due to slow service and I had to go to the bar to ask to order desserts, they also didn’t clear our plates and cutlery away after our main meal. Really disappointed, I can only assume they were staff shortages, but still no excuse for such a bad experience.

Stayed and ate here and I’m just deflated. Checked in, was shown to room, there isn’t a guest book or any information on accessing the restaurant, breakfast, who to contact in an emergency, facilities. Feels like you’re just being left to figure everything out for yourself, I still have no idea if breakfast is served. Draw in bedroom has bits of left over flat pack in, bathroom seems to have stickers all over that have been on for 10+ years. There is a cupboard with heater and fan in but the extra duvet is just chucked in. The dust on the bed side tables is thick, which did actually throw me a bit because it means that it just hasn’t been touched in a long time. Coffee and tea left in room aren’t identified as caffeine or decafe, no milk and the cups we had been left were actually thick with coffee stains, don’t believe they had been cleaned. Because there is no numbers to ring in the room, had to get ready and go downstairs to get new mugs. It just feels very unfinished and the welcome from coming in to the staff dealing with us at dinner it just doesn’t feel comfortable. Food is pricey and a “optional 10% service charge is added to your food bill” this information is printed on bits of A4 paper and are stuck to the nicely decorated walls which just brings down the tone. You don’t get asked if you’re happy for the charge and the card machine was handed over before we had a chance to say otherwise. For the cost of the food and drink already, I don’t agree with it and customers should be left to tip what they are comfortable with. 0% alcohol is only one flavoured cider and one beer, menu online has other options which is a shame. Also no drinks menu is given to you so it’s an awkward encounter of you asking for something to be told they don’t have it. We came to bed because of this instead of staying in the bar but the telly has limited Chanel’s and is hard to work. I was also a bit thrown by how dirty the stairs are up to the restaurant and rooms. Also really confused by there being two separate websites with totally different information on. These are all minor but because of the amount of them it has ruined my experience a bit.

Hugely disappointed not to be able to attend meetings here, there is no disability access, everywhere requires climbing stairs, not something I can do. With the age of the building there is nothing they can do, without spending a lot of money. Obviously something the new owners may consider? Breakfast was ok, but nothing to write home about, much better options available locally and with easier parking access, the archway was built and designed for a model t ford not modern cars of a larger size.

Location wise, it was super close to the city centre where we had a nice walk and 5 minutes from Alnwick Gardens where we had a lovely day. Will be back to stay in the summer and then again around Christmas time for the gardens light show and The Plough will be base camp for sure!

Good food and good service. Tom was efficient and even though we hadn't booked we were made to feel welcome. Would recommend. The steak pie was great 😁🍻

Thought we would try here as the reviews we seen was good but unfortunately it was a distaster today. Staff were very rude and didn't care at all. My partners food came out 15 mins after everyone else's with only 3 carrots and 1 piece of brocoli then when ordering dessert we managed to get the check before my desert came out. Very unfortunate but will say the manager was very apologetic just a shame the other staff were more bothered about standing their than helping out.

Came here for Sunday Lunch with my partner. Warm greeting when we walked in and were taken upstairs to the restaurant, which is a hidden gem as we were just expecting a standard pub Sunday dinner, not the full restaurant experience. Staff warm and well mannered, the drink and food order were taken in a timely manner and it all arrived in good time. Sunday dinner (we had chicken and beef) were great. Definitely be back and worth the drive from Newcastle.

A bit of a disappointment. I have visited previously and have to say it doesn’t have the same ‘feel’. We arrived for a drink but waited about 5 minutes for a member of staff to appear from upstairs before being served.

Food was really tasty, sadly the service wasn't the best. Staff in the bar and restaurant seemed more interested in mobile phones. Our friend had booked lunch, told table was ready , when we went upstairs to the table it hadn't been cleaned. It was cleaned upon request.

Attended for Sunday lunch, booked a table in the bar only to be taken upstairs to the restaurant - we had 2 family members with us who struggled with the stairs one due to recent hip replacement. We were extremely disappointed by the service from the young members of staff who were waiting on. Very slow at attending to us, then bringing dirty lipstick stained glasses for water. Nobody asked if everything was ok with our meal throughout our time there. We then waited for over 30 minutes after finishing our main meal to be totally ignored by the staff who were upstairs - at times there were no members of staff to be seen. One staff member could see we had finished but continued to service empty tables before disappearing. We were planning to have desserts but due to the poor, inadequate service received we left. Would not recommend or will be rushing back!!

Thought we'd take advantage of the current offer they have on to see what the change of management has meant for the the Plough. Had to wait 50 minutes for food to arrive and when it did the mashed and roast potatoes were lukewarm, veg was overcooked and beef was overdone for my taste. Crackling on friends pork was burnt to a crisp and inedible. The staff seemed to be inexperienced but were pleasant enough. Other customers who arrived after us were served far more quickly so maybe just a blip but we were underwhelmed by our visit

Such a beautiful and relaxing place to eat food. I have to say the chicken, haggis, and Parma ham dish was the sexiest thing on the menu! Kind and caring staff and plenty of drink options.

Called in today with my family just after 12. Girl behind the bar advised as they were a staff member down, they weren’t taking any “walk-ins” for food orders. Shame, been looking forward to trying this place for a while now.

Unfortunately we had a quite a disappointing experience when we came here for drinks when staying locally in Alnwick. The service was poor, despite being very quiet, with often nobody present to serve at the bar and a long wait for drinks. One of the worst pulled pints of Guinness I've ever seen - another member of staff came over and apologised, pouring another for us. There were a couple of interesting beers and ales on tap, which was one of the only redeeming features. The dining room looked like it was decorated well, but I didn't have the food so couldn't comment on that either. It has potential but is lacking in atmosphere and life - would definitely recommend trying other places in Alnwick for a decent pint and better atmosphere.

We visited for Sunday Lunch, prebooked the table which is advisable. It’s one of the best carveries we have had. I opted for Beef and my Husband had Lamb, a very good selection of veg and perfect gravy. It’s very good.
