So as others have said the service from the staff is spectacular. However there are several main issues which have caused our lowered review of this location. On arrival : tldr 5* When we arrived at 6:30pm the car park was reasonably empty and provided ample space for parking. There are several disabled bays available at the bar side of the establishment which allows for easy access to the flat enterance for wheelchair bound guests. Checking in : tldr 4* The staff are wonderful. Extremly freindly and approchable as you would expdct for a northern pub, we had a short wait 5 min wait however earlier members of our group had arrived sooner so this may have alleviated waiting time. Room : tldr 3* The room itself is okay very reminiscent of a premier inn or similar type chain hotel each room has a name and number so dont be shocked when looking for your room the door numbers are at the top of the door not in the centre. All 3 of the rooms where made up incorrectly, two as twins and one was uncleaned however the staff corrected this upon request while we where eating dinner. Our room did come with some unrequested extras as someone had left underwear in one of the drawers which my partner found when looking for a hairdryer. These where removed by cleaning staff upon request. The bar: 3* Again server was excellent he was a great guy joined in with the banter and made our meal more enjoyable. The drinks where as expected of a hotel bar quality but higher price. I will give the barmaid my hat she recommended a cloudy lemonade and passionfruit before my meal which was wonderful as a non alcholic starter and the asahi was poured correctly and had lime added as requested. The food order was taken at the table which was refreshing aswell as additional drink orders we spent £180 between 6 of us which was a main meal and dessert along with hot drink each (at £30 a head for 2 drinks a hot drink and a 2 course meal you cant complain about the cost) My partner had the katsu bowl her rice was fresh sticky white rice which she enjoyed the chicken was plain but the panko batter was seasoned which accompanied the curry well. She had a mini bakewell for dessert which she enjoyed. I had the pizza. It was a fresh stone baked margerita, while it could of done another 30 seconds the base was nicely cooked and had the rough dimension of a 10", the pizza is provided uncut so you need to cut it yourself to the needed slices. I also had the bakewell sponge, the sponge was soft and light and the cherry jam was incredibly flavourful even the custard was fantastic with the small skin of fresh custard. So, why am i reviewing 3* instead of 4*, because of the delay. The waiting time we sat at our table at around 7 it was gone 11 by the time we ate 2 courses and had our bill provided. The meal should have been a 1-2 hour affair not nearly 4. The breakfast was okay for a pub breakfast the bacon and sausages where bland and unseasoned but the hashbrown, mushrooms, egg and toast where all brilliant the food was tepid upon arrival with the plate having been heated a normal.give away of microwave or storage heater use On the second day i got the porriage which was phenominal if not a slightly small portion This is a 4* restaurant and pub hiding as a luxury inn due to the area if the prices where lower it would be a 5* review as it would have been a gem find but at the cost of £112 per night and £30 per head for meal (with no discounts for the errors in room making or house keeping offered) it is a hard 3*,okay but nothing spectacular.

Starters were really nice but the main course was terrible. We ordered the 3 meat trio and the belly pork and none of the food (except the Yorkshire pudding) tasted fresh. Roast potatoes tasted like they had been cooked and reheated multiple times while the meats were hard and chewy as if they had been out for a while and possibly left under a lamp. The waitress asked if all was ok and my wife advised of the issues and was told she will let the kitchen know. Been here many times before and never had an issue but today was one that will put us off going back. Bill for 2 people £65 and for this price you expect better quality

Went here for a sunday family meal, for my mother's birthday. I had the lamb which was over cooked and dry. Followed by the dessert and coffee, supposedly bakewell sponge, all I could taste was the desiccated coconut on it. However, the custard that went with it was lovely. I would not go back.

We had lunch here today after the Stu there previously and enjoying this. Today however was a different matter, the starters were ok but the main lunch was below standard, I had the belly pork which was chewy and tasteless, the roast potatoes tasted like the day befores and just reheated. The pork “cracking” was chewy as if it had been left out under a heater! My husband had the trio of dry over cooked meats! Terrible! Told the young girl who took the plates but wasn’t really interested! When we first arrived I had to pick up food off the floor to stop my dog eating stale food that could have been there since yesterday! We won’t be back

Booked a table in advance but when you arrive there is no where to 'check in' so we had to stand at a busy bar and just wait our turn. Not ideal when there are only 2 bar staff both avoiding eye contact. Then we had a long wait for food and had to ask the server for an update after 40 mins. There were only 2 of us and only ordered a main. Food was nice but honestly quite expensive for what it was. There are less expensive/better value Sunday lunches out there. Several do 2 courses for what we paid for one. Also not a fan of dogs being allowed in pubs. And I'm a dog owner. It's not pleasant having to listen to dogs barking at each other or watch them eating off the floor.

Our 1st visit, celebrating a birthday. Atmosphere was great, and service good, Entrees and dessert were excellent, pork belly with scallops (plural) was over cooked, more mash on the plate than anything else, scallop was cinders and not recognisable. What a disappointment. We went for Sunday lunch and this is what we got. We paid around £22 each. For this price you could go to an amazing restaurant and not feel hungry after. The roasties were anemic, the beef was terribly overcooked. Terrible portion sizes, looks like the veg is missing. My Mother In Law found tin toil she almost swallowed. When mentioned to the waitress she just said oh well sorry. Not even that she would pass this on to the chef. Wouldn't return. It's a shame as we have been before and enjoyed an evening meal but I've never felt so ripped off!

Been a while since we were at the Snowy Owl Greeted on arrival to ask for a table for two by the Lad behind the bar to be told any where over there poor bugga looked like he'd put on along shift (it was only 5.30) we ordered our drinks & sat with menu which was a good standard of choice. SCALOP PRAWN COQUILLE SERVED ON A CLAM SHELL to start 2 Sirloin steaks n trimmings For main Cooked to 👌 perfection Ordered a sticky toffee pudding for dessert ...bloody lovely but I had to share with my hubby..we waited a little while for it as I asked the waiter e replied it's been waiting on the side in the kitchen hence the skin on top if my custard ...Customer service is a bit lacking no go about them But the girl behind the bar not sure if a manager Bubbly & welcoming.. wish I had brought a dog she loves the dogs... We normally leave a tip where ever we go unfortunately not this time . I know it's not the easiest of jobs to wait on BUT if you have a smile on your face it makes a huge difference .

Food was barely warm. Belly pork chewy although they changed it when I complained. Was slightly better . Not as described slow braised I expected it to be melt in the mouth. Menu states lashing of gravy. I was given 2 cms in a tiny pot. Did ask for more but that fell on deaf ears. Pigs in blankets were an off colour gave them to my dog. She was ill that night . Google Maps told me before I wrote this review that this was the 10th time I had been to The Snowy Owl. And it certainly was the worst experience I've had there for a long time. From being ignored at the bar , to there being no host to say you have arrived for your booking, to having to ask for the seats to be wiped before sitting down as they have food all over them, waiting 40 mins for your food to arrive and when it does all dishes are cold and the server apologising and saying she will get a fresh one only for the same plate to be returned 2 mins later after going in the microwave. The food is expensive for what it is, just very average. This was my 10th and last time at the Snowy Owl and I wouldn't recommend this place at all. This is such a shame as it used to be such a lovely place.

We used to love coming here to eat, but thought the place has really gone downhill. When we arrived we had to queue at the busy bar to alert a staff member that we had a table booked for 7 people. Didn't receive the friendliest of welcomes. One of our party is glutent intolerant and struggled with the menu to find a dish that he could order. Our server was pleasant, but the food wasn't. All of our meals were either lukewarm or cold. We had to send one back because it tasted like it been cooked in the fridge. At an average of £20 per main, you would expect a higher standard of service and food. I think we all said after that we probably won't return, which is a shame because the Snowy Owl could be (and used to be) a lot better than this.

Me and my other half called in to the Snowy Owl this month as we always pass this way but have never been in yet. It won't be the last time for sure! The pub was busy and the servers all had their hands sufficiently full but were still pleasant. We both opted for the fish and chips and they were so tasty we asked for the chefs name to give him a special mention. Luke, your batter is out of this world! Light, crispy and piping hot. The meals came fairly quickly considering the pub was almost full, and Luke (we think) even gave us a smile and wave as he was walking through - what a canny lad! We were impressed by the warm atmosphere and charm of this pub, it surpassed our expectations tenfold.

We have visited The Snowy Owl a number of times and have always had a lovely experience until today. The 2 stars are for the food which was lovely as ever. However the service was very poor, a long wait for drinks, not offered dessert menu, no soap in the toilets, trodden food on the floor and staff not exactly acting appropriately in front of customers. We had to go to the bar to pay, no one came to the table which they have done on previous visits. We were not asked if everything was OK so we raised these issues anyway and they were met with ums and ahs which did not fill us with confidence that it was being taken seriously. We were told our issues would be passed on but to whom we do not know and in all honesty not sure they will be passed on at all. In all a very disappointing visit!

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and had dinner. Firstly, upon arrival, we went to the end of the bar where you check in, there was also another customer waiting already who had what appeared a son with several needs. 3 times 2 people walked past us and didn't even acknowledge us, until the lady on front of us walked to the 3rd person to ignore us and the stopped and with absolutely no smile or at least showing some degree of interest checked the lady in and then us. Once we had a key, we walked to the separate building next to the pub/restaurant and, upon entering the hall way coukd smell cheap air freshener that seemed to be masking what seemed a septic tank issue. We were not told anything about a possible issue with the smell, which is irritating. Luckily, in the back end of the annex you could not smell it, especially in the room. Once in the room, it looked very nice and appeared comfortable. Bed was ok too. There were a couple or so issues within the room, such as water left in the kettle, which to me signals no-one bothered to check it. There were a couple of small bits of wrapper from the free biscuits they give you which was from previous visitors and showed that it was not properly vaccumed as was evident from the dust around the sides of the room on the carpet. The towel rail, in the bathroom also did not work as it barely got luke warm. It would of been nice to have a couple of glasses in the room also aside from the mugs for water but I asked at the bar and they gave us 2. That evening we had dinner and it was really nice and comfortable in the restaurant, the young lady server was nice too and the food was very good. The next morning, we went into the bar/restaurant into the pre allocated area and sat down and made a coffee that was provided. We sat there with 2 other members of family that also stayed there. Upon arrival we passed 3 people and not once was there any communication to say hello or any instructions...... so...... we sat in the breakfast area for about 30 mins waiting for someone's to come over and take our order or however they do breakfast. We eventually asked as we just thought there was a delay or issue, and was told we are supposed to go to the bar!!! I said to her that no one told us that upon check in or anyone that we passes on the way in or the 3 or 4 times 2 individuals came in to the breakfast area and saw us waiting. So we ordered the food and the breakfast was very nice, but lack of any real customer service or communication almost negated the lovely breakfast. Later that day we attended the wedding event held else where and upon arrival, back could still smell the odour upon entering. The next morning, we were ignored again as we walked to our table for breakfast by 2 people working on a laptop which I presume was the owner or manager and another member of staff. We were however approached by a member of staff who was very polite and he brought us menus and told us to go to the bar, which was nice and should of been done yesterday also. Upon checking out, we went to the bar and the same guy who checked us in on the Saturday was chatting to what seemed like regulars, we explained we where checking out and rather than pause his personal chat and come over to us he just said from across the room to leave the key on the bar. I was really surprised (or not) that he coukd not pause and just say a thankyou and ask how our stay was etc. But, he obviously was not interested. Overall. Yes the food was very nice, the room, quite comfortable. But, cleanliness or attention in the room could of been better and the check-in service could of been so much better and not feel like a chore. Breakfast could be pointed out better as where to order and a greeting would of been nice, like we mattered. The communication overall was very poor, and it felt like they were more interested in operating the bar and restaurant than the hotel part. It's such a shame but, we would certainly not stay there or recommend it to anyone, to stay there. Very disappointing.

Very disappointing meal. Mothering Sunday and our Ruby Wedding. Havnt been for a while and always have had lovely food in the past. Tonight was awful. Table booked for 7. The starter was lovely. Then came the main meal, roast dinner. The meal was not hot but warm. Plates cool. The sprouts were inedible. And lots of them like they had run out of other veg. It was like it had been cooked for a midday meal and left to go cold then just reheated. Although the nice waitress said that's not what happened. My only description of this meal was likening it to a hospital meal. We reported this to the waitress who said would pass on to chef. There were only 3 choices of dessert! We left without and no apology from the catering staff. Definitely not worth the money and we won't be going back. Such a shame for such a lovely venue.

I was so excited to spend my first Mother’s Day here. However, the service we received wasn’t great. We went in and were shown to our table and after 15 minutes no one had come over to take our drinks order so we had to ask someone to come to us. When they brought our drinks they brought the wrong pint. 15 minutes again had gone by and no one had taken our food order by this time our one year old was hungry as we have to plan going out for food round his meal times so again had to ask someone to take our order. The Sunday dinner was lovely but wasn’t warm and the gravy portion was small. I asked for another gravy portion however didn’t receive this. We then had our pudding orders taken for that to then take 20 minutes to arrive. We thought things couldn’t get much worse but when we were presented with the bill we had been significantly over charged. We were supposed to be paying £29.95 for the set menu plus our optional extras however we were charged an extra £10 ish on top. I questioned this with the waiter who went off to check who said we had indeed been over charged and to go to the till for a refund. When we went to the till the person there had no idea what was going on and told us to wait. We waited for 10 minutes before I said ‘where should I go for this refund’ for them to say ‘Jake will be with you’ I didn’t know who Jake was. After a few minutes he appeared and refunded us. There was no apology for the service we received, the wait time or for the incorrect charge. I am truly gutted that I was excited to go here and for it to be as terrible as it was. Today was such a special occasion being my first Mother’s Day which was quickly ruined by the service at this place. We won’t be returning.

Mollie was lovely as our server for the afternoon and when things weren’t right with the meats on my meal she was quick to sort it for us. But from the moment we stepped in it wasn’t a good experience. We walked to the bar waiting to be seen to our table as we had booked, and the man stood at the bar just looked at us, looked back at the screen and then started doing other bits then when I went to say excuse me he looked at us again and walked away not even saying something like sorry I’ll be a few minutes. Just silence and ignorance. Finally we got seated, again Mollie was lovely. But it took 10 mins for the bar staff to arrive with our drinks and then we got asked if we had ordered starters even though we hadn’t (just mains) and our had seemingly been mixed up. We then waited 50 mins for food, there was only 2 of us. Eventually when we got our food mine was actually missing pork off of the “trio of meats” so I only had beef and turkey. The turkey was cold as if I had just took it out of a supermarket packet and yet was the only nice meat on my plate. Both my beef and pork were extremely fatty. Only a tiny bit of gravy and I spent 5 mins trying to get someone’s attention but no one was around. Never got asked if everything was okay with our meal. My partner couldn’t finish off his “signature” burger as it was fatty and chewy, no sauces and non to come with either so was just dry as well. Chips were cold. The nicest thing about our meal was the pints we got, Mollie and the nice lad who gave us our bill. Ultimately we just wanted out and were very disappointed as we used to love it here but we do feel over £60 for the service at the start, the food and just the overall experience was not worth it at all.

Lovely country pub with an intimate cozy atmosphere, dog friendly, good choice of food and plenty parking spaces. You can also book rooms for the night, or two and is a handy place to stay. 10 mins from the airport and 5mons to jump on the A1 north or south.

Terrible food and service shouldn’t of paid, beef sandwich which I left was more like corned beef than beef.

Visited the Wellwood arms today for Sunday lunch, the standard carvery was about £15 and the large around £18 which isn’t a bad price for a good carvery, was disappointed that everything that make your Sunday dinner was frozen out of a bag, aunt Bessie style Yorkshire’s, frozen roast potatoes, frozen parsnip and stuffing was undercooked and bland wouldn’t have minded if it was a cheap dinner bit for those prices I’d of expected everything home cooked and fresh. On the upside the staff were very friendly and the place was exceptionally clean, just the carvery let it down a bit

Room very tired paper peeling off walls. Shower pressure very weak. Sunday roast very poor and only lukewarm, beef very rare not to everyone's liking. Breakfast nothing to write home about. Lack of food, crockery and coffee machine kept breaking down.
