By far our worst accommodation on 8 day walk song Hadrian’s Wall. We arrived very wet - no drying facilities- room cold and damp; neither towel rail nor radiator worked. Nowhere to hang wet walking gear - no hooks, hangers fixed in wardrobe. Staff eventually brought an electric heater. Bathroom a disgrace - very, very tired - looked like a 5 year old had applied silicon seal…. Staff (apart from one grump man on reception) were cheerful and as helpful as they could be under the circumstances. Food mediocre- hot, edible, but not much better than that. ‘Spa’ roof leaking rain, jacuzzi not warm enough- and general feel of a public baths that should have been closed down years ago

We stayed in The George as we were walking the Hadrian's Wall path and it's right on route. It looked lovely on their website and they boast a swimming pool and spa area so I felt that justified the price of £128 for B&B in a basic twin room. We were welcomed by a friendly receptionist and given instructions to find our room as it was a long walk from the reception area. The room was very basic indeed, overlooked the bins and the bathroom floor had an unpleasant concrete floor. There was no dressing gown to wear down to the pool and spa area and when we got there the only thing on offer was the pool and a jacuzzi. The steam room and sauna were closed and the good sized pool had black mould all around the edge. We ate in the hotel for dinner and it was good. The breakfast had a nice coffee machine and there was a good choice on offer although the fried eggs had been cooked for some time and kept warm in a heated container, so not edible. On the whole, an okay place to stay and very convenient for walkers but I felt we did not get valuable for money. Definitely not a three star hotel.

Stayed 4 nights lovely location breakfast buffet style. . Only down part the rotary toaster never toasted bread first time then put in again sometime too dark. Evening meals were fanatic everything we tried we couldn’t fault. Piping hot. Only shame the doors to rooms to close most other guest slammed then so late night woken up. Walls little thin could hear other guests talking. Swimming pool jacuzzi were good. But the steam room and sauna were both out of action the pool area could do with a make over . Showers poor couldn’t get water to come out more than a trickle.and most of the lockers didn’t have locks.

A great location- pretty even in the rain and handy for the AD122 to Housesteads if required. Another big plus is super friendly and helpful staff. I hope they are all valued. We appreciated the vestibule area with towels to dry the doggies. The hotel does have a nice atmosphere . Now for the bad bits… it’s tired- very much in need of tlc and an injection of cash. Our room had a terrible smell of damp and it was so depressing and dark. I would imagine a lot of walkers with soggy kit stay here and there is nowhere (except a log burner in the bar) to dry boots. Our boots were still sodden in the morning and there was no hope of drying anything else. Our bathroom was clean enough but old and shabby. On seeing the pool area, I almost turned around but did have a quick dip. The changing room was rank. So sorry, but I wouldn’t stay again or recommend it to others.

I was walking Hadrians Wall Path and had walked over 30 miles desperate for some help to just phone a taxi. For context, there is literally nowhere else for the preceding 15-20 miles or so where you see civilisation and by this time it was 8pm. The George hotel was literally the 1st opportunity to ask for help for what I imagine is for many Hadrians Walll walkers after the toughest section of the walk. I know I would have looked weather beaten and tired considering I had been walking for 13 hours in the constant rain, but I’m sure this would be somewhat a regular occurrence. I went to the reception and waited in line for 5 mins whilst an older couple described what kind of coffee and tea replenishments they required in their room and they were certainly treated with respect and like they were important. When it was my turn i simply asked “would you mind ordering a taxi for me or providing a phone number for a taxi service”. The receptionist said “well thank god you didn’t go through with asking me to actually call you a taxi!” and instead shoved a taxi business card into my hand like that is literally all we will do for you. She obviously thought I was below her regular clientele and looked down on me as such, in my time of need. Note to manager, this was Tue 9th July 2024 at 8pm if you want to identify a training need to improve the customer experience if that is something you care about

The hot tub was barely warm. There was a group of 14 year old boys doing what they do being rowdy between the pool and hot tub and after a rally long hike in Hadrians Wall it was so disappointing to not having a hot relaxing soak. The Sunday Roast was tough meat and the breakfast was sitting in oil in the pans. Most disappointing stay for the price along a difficult 8 days of very wet weather and lots of hiking.

Let’s start off with the positives. The hotel was the best value in the area, at immediate notice. I was in a bit of a pickle with no nearby campsites open in the off season, so a massive relief to have a room. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the self-service breakfast was good, and plentiful The reception are looked lovely and the location is excellent. On the wall path and overlooking the river, the warm lights were a treat for sore eyes (and achy legs). The towels were good and the bedding was crispy white and clean That said, the room was awfully decorated and shabby - two of the three student accommodations I had were better. Whoever does the maintainence, is either heavily overworked and deserves sympathy, under resourced and likewise; or is just completely incompetent Either way there’s no excuse for hotel management (who must have income based on high hotel rates) to allow the rooms to be so poor. They could outsource to third parties if their own maintenance team isn’t up to the job The flush handle was coming out of the wall, caulk repairs look to have been done as part of a festive game involving blindfolds, wallpaper coming off and paint repairs and mold coverup obvious and mismatching. Paint drips everywhere. It was a surprise because everything outside the room was lovely, so if they just have a few bad rooms and I got unlucky you might be ok. Like I say, glad of their existence, and I’d pay maybe £30-£40 just for the clean bed, but don’t plan a romantic getaway here unless they have two classes of room and you’re sure you aren’t getting one like mine

Hubby booked as a surprise after seeing the gorgeous location & spa for me as i have chronic pain, unfortunately that was the only beautiful thing, we waited 20 mins at reception before anyone came to the desk, once we had our keys, we had to walk through the gardens to the end of the hotel to find our room, the entrance was pouring in water from the roof making the stone stairs very slippy, once in our room we noticed the walls were filthy, around the light switches were disgusting, there was mold on the wallpaper above the window, we had driven a long way so decided to make the most of it and go into the spa, the changing rooms have ceiling tiles missing while blowing in freezing cold air, once into the jacuzzi it was jetting out freezing cold water, so we changed to the pool, only to find a ring of black mold around the top of the pool , there were 2 men sitting on seats fully clothed jackets on just watching I didn't feel comfortable at all, we left and went back to our room, we couldn't shower as the door was stuck and to be honest the filth in it I didn't really want too, sat on the bed and felt nothing but springs, so I had no sleep and was in so much pain the next day, the TV was tiny, then we were phoned at 21.30 to ask when we were checking in then again 10 mins later, needless to say we were up early and out, my hubby was so angry as he had booked this, this whole place needs upgrading and cleaned, can't complain about the staff, they couldn't have been nicer, pity about the rest... AVOID!!

Honest review. The location is great, the bar and restaurant and gardens are pretty and cosy. The rooms are dated but clean with comfy beds and bedding. The 'spa' was really grim. Accessed via a dilapidated corridor with leaks and chipped and peeling paint. Not staffed so you need a code to get in the gym. Sufficient equipment but the space dirty. Water stains and leaks every where, not maintained or cleaned in a long time. The changing rooms really old, unclean, cold broken doors and lockers and hand written signs sellotaped up everywhere. The pool was quite nice and warm, the jacuzzi and sauna both broken. The flooring was concrete, old and very cold. Paintwork was peeling everywhere. First night we got no sleep due to couple fighting in room above us. Went to reception at 2am for help, to see a note with a number to call for night manager. Left 4 messages all unanswered. When I complained to staff next day we were offered nothing in terms of compensation for the awful night we endured. I'd rate this a 1 or 2 star place not 3 star.

***Please note we have not stayed here but I couldn't bypass the room/service stars when leaving a review. We visited recently to take my 4 year old daughter swimming for a few hours. The reception area is lovely, clean and inviting and in my opinion a false representation of what was to come. We headed towards the leisure facilities and was less than impressed. The changing facilities were filthy, not to mention freezing. There was a vent in the ceiling blowing cool air into an already freezing room. While we were dry and getting dressed there was condensation dripping off the filthy ceiling. The water was so hot in the showers that I couldn't wash my daughter properly before getting dressed. The lockers had the coin part taken out so there wasn't anywhere to leave valuables locked away. I understand that mould builds up in a pool area. But, we could tell that the place hadn't been cleaned at all for some time. There was also a strange scale laying on top of the water. The floor was filthy and it smelt of sweat and damp. I was in two minds whether to raise my concerns with the manager. But, it was a family day and we tried to make the most of it. To be honest the place needs money spending on it and a renovation and it's seems like the hotel owners know this and they have given up maintaining and cleaning it.

We were having peaceful evening away, doing a bit of stargazing and having a quiet night away as a couple. We picked the hotel based on the website, it’s lovely grounds and situation by the river. Sadly, the reality was far from the glossy marketing photography. We were put in a room at the furthest end of the hotel, a 1970s annex with endless stairs and corridors (and no lift), Our room was next to the leisure centre entrance which was leaking severely in the rain. On entering our room, we were hit with the stink of stale tobacco. It was horrid! I was worried about my clothes taking on the foul odour. The room was also in desperate need of decoration; the paint was peeling and the walls marked and scuffed throughout. This was echoed in all of the communal corridors. Only the main centre of the hotel looked somewhat fresher, but even then, the toilets were grubby. We won’t be staying again. We could have paid less for a Premier Inn and have been assured of a clean and well decorated room. I feel sad as our experience should have been memorable for all the right reasons.

My stay here was overall very nice. I was impressed even before setting foot in George Hotel. I got a phone call to inform me that the hot water was not working, they provided me with two options, I could either get a full refund and find elsewhere to stay or if I stayed I could have a free 3 course meal, a free breakfast and also got offered a glass of wine to be put into my room (I don't drink so got given some cans of coke fresh out of the fridge on my arrival!). The staff were all super welcoming and helpful. I had a single room. The room was lovely and warm and I initially felt like it had everything I could possibly need for a night of sleep. The room certainly needs a good update though. I feel like it wouldn't hurt or be too costly to update the carpets or to re-plaster the ceilings etc. The bathroom was also a little old too but it was fine. The location was lovely - my view was of the River Tyne surrounded my nature and I could see the lovely bridge to the right. The hotel is situated next to a roundabout but it was quiet enough as it is not a busy area. The breakfast was very nice and the restaurant also looks out onto the river which is a lovely peaceful setting to have breakfast at. I would certainly stay here again - the hotel seemed very popular with those exploring hadrians wall.

The whole hotel stinks of cheap cleaning products and mold (the corridors to the rooms being the worst), the bathrooms could be those of a prison with dirty plastic flooring, the windows were moldy and not cleaned properly. Restaurant closes at 20:30 (???), so we missed dinner after a long day hiking. Also, the swimming pool and sauna close similarly early… but customers are forced to check out at 10am, essentially preventing them to enjoy them in the morning either. I’ve never come across a hotel with such an early checkout (and management refused to arrange a later check-out for us). That’d be an easy solution guys! Close your amenities a bit later and check-out later as well, come on.

This is a hotel that could easily do so much better, but on the hole the staff do their best to make it work. The hotel is located right on the bank of the River North Tyne and is very tranquil. There is a reasonable car park at the front and rear of the hotel. The room I stopped in was poor to say the least, the layout of the bathroom was awful. Sitting on the toilet was difficult due to it's closeness to the wall and the poor choice of location for the toilet roll holder. Most aspects of the room seemed to be an after thought (no planning here). The windows are single glassed sash, the winter would not be fun. Everything in the room looked tired and dated. My room was located above the kitchen's, which ment I could here all the banging and crashing. I could also smell all of the cooking, which would normally not bother me but I could really smell old fat, which was not great. Another room point is the door, it uses a conventional key (very unusual these days) which on my room was hard to turn and the door was heavy to open. This was not too much difficulty for me, but I did see a lot of older people there which I would imagine would really struggle. With regard to the bar and resteraut things got a little better. These are decorated to a higher standard, the barman is excellent. He treated us with respect and spoke in a friendly and helpful manner. (He was the shinning star on our visit). We booked a table in the resteraunt for our evening meal. The table layout seemed rather strange as they were position so that one person had a view of the river and their guest had a view of the back wall. Sugestion to the staff, lay the tables in a diamond shape and site both guest's so that they can view the river. I have seen this done in another hotel with a view and it works well. The menu is set and is rather limited (I guess you have to expect this these days July 23)? Our food was served to us by a very uncamunacative young lady that litterally dumped our food on the table. This attitude seemed somehow to suit the quality of the food which I would rate as just about edible. The barfood looked better but I never had a chance to try it. Overall I did not think much of the hotel or the service offered. Just for a bit more fun there is no lift for those who are less abled and the corridor upstairs felt like you were in a fairground fun house. So would I recommend this hotel or return. No, in simple terms. If you are using this as a pitstop and a bed for the night, then just make sure you ate on route. The location is lovely but that is by far the best aspect of this hotel.

My wife & I stayed 2 nights (26.07.23 & 27.07.23) in the annex (room 104) at The George Hotel, Chollerford. The hotel is situated on the bank of the River Tyne. The hotel is ideally situated, for those working their way along Hadrian’s Wall, as either a base, or transit stop, – consequently it is, basically, an overnight stop. The setting is tranquil with gardens and seating area. There is ample parking. The hotel itself, as do the gardens, desperately need attention. The exterior paintwork (windows etc) need attention. The interior is, although a little tired, good. It should be mentioned that the hotel is currently being sold, by the Coast & Country Group, to new local owners therefore the current owners are loath to invest. Our room was adequate but on the first night the shower was broken – this was fixed the next day. Another interesting point was that the power socket next to one of the twin beds could only take round plugs (the annex had been “opened” in 1979!). The sockets for the kettle & T.V were the new type. There was a small gym area with a heated pool. At the time fo our visit it was being used, although guests were advised to be aware of problems with the pool lining. The food was acceptable & the staff were excellent. D.B York

Lovely hotel situated in an ideal location for access to the Northumberland countryside. It does cater for less abled people in a fashion with ramps etc inside but to have a room on the ground floor you have to travel outside to access restaurants and bar . That said the staff are very very helpful .

This hotel/restaurant is wonderfully situated and having driven past it over many years I have long though it would be good to dine there. This was to be a special evening and having booked a table by the window we looked forward to a first class meal. The receptionist greeted us warmly and we were directed to the restaurant. To our horror we found the menu only fit for Joe's Caf'. Before we sat down I was informed that fish was not available and had been replaced by a type of fish cake. That was one of four options for main course and whilst I don't recall the exact description, the other three choices were basically bangers and mash, spaghetti bolognese and Mediterranean vegetables. We had expected so much and found so little. The bar menu did seem rather more extensive but we were so disappointed we left without eating and had a nice bar meal elsewhere. What a let down. I do not think I have seen a worse menu anywhere! We won't be going back.

We dropped in for lunch as we spotted a lovely riverside garden in the sunshine - it looked quite busy. We grabbed a nice table near the river and pleased to have fresh water bowls for our dogs. The lunch menu was very limited but we were told the pizzas were great and the chilli was home made. Both were pretty dreadful as was the £3 mixed salad to accompany the food. Keep driving past would be my recommendation I’m afraid.

Hadrian wall in a superior room was good for bed and breakfast. Had a swim. Bed comfortable. All facilities very tired. Food was very poor. Menu poor. Virtual whole menu deep fried. My wife would describe it a “ Digestive Hell” Sadly very badly lacks a chef. Salad served with meals indescribable. Sad wilted dried out and must have been out for days. Tasteless. Stay for position to Hadrians Wall but eat somewhere else. The lack of any paint inside or outside for years will lead to disaster for woodwork outside which in many places is beyond rotten.

The hotel is a little dated but clean. The staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. We were in a room with an adjoining door and could hear everything from the room next to us. The plus was that we could take our dog . The food was pretty much the worst we’ve ever had in a hotel. I had a piece of fish in passata, with roasted potatoes….awful

Helpful friendly staff - nothing too much trouble! Food at dinner and breakfast was adequate, ample quantities, tasty and not expensive. The bar served a good range of interesting spirits, the list was refreshingly traditional and not clogged up with overpriced garbage gin. Wine list worthy of your attention, esp. at the pricy end of the scale where I can’t see the mark-up.

Coming back from the Wall wanting a pub lunch. To be fair the hotel is not a pub. This is only a review of the lunch. Staff were excellent and friendly. The “bar” is a vestibule off the corridor with 2 tables and a six foot long bar. Had the driest most tasteless burger ever after a longer than expected wait bearing in mind there was only another couple present.

We stayed at the George for four nights. It is in a very picturesque setting and close to Chesters Roman fort. We received a warm welcome on arrival and our room was clean and comfortable, with plenty of hot water and a good shower. The room was cleaned daily. Meals were superb. At breakfast there was a wide choice of freshly prepared food and drinks and the evening meals were delicious, generous and well presented with a varied menu that made us spoiled for choice. What I will remember most is the friendliness, helpfulness and courtesy of the staff. They work very hard to ensure guests enjoy their stay.

This has got to be one of the best places that I have had the pleasure to visit! When we entered, we were greeted by the friendly staff and quickly seated. Our view from the table was amazing and I couldn’t believe how picturesque the area was. It has all the beauty of the Northumberland countryside with amazing food to match. When our food arrived, we were blown away by the beauty of the presentation and the taste Oh my goodness! I have never had such amazing food from a hotel restaurant and I will be sure to go back again. I intend to try everything on the menu. The restaurant and staff were extraordinary. If you want a five star experience at a very reasonable price I suggest that you get to the George before they are fully booked! Which I imagine will be soon :)

We stayed here for 1 night while cycling the Hadrian wall route 72. The location was perfect for us which is why we chose to stay. Check in was quick and easy. Bike storage was in the cellar so we were instructed to leave our bikes in reception and staff would take them to the cellar. I don’t normally like just abandoning the bike especially without securing them, but I figured reception area would have cameras so I agreed. I mean bikes cost alot of money and they were our mode of transport. Would you leave your iPad or Rolex in the middle of reception with the promise of staff later storing it safely? Use of the leisure centre and gym was offered to us which was a little bonus although we didn’t have time to use those facilities so cannot comment further. The room was clean, roomy and a great shower! However the bed was pretty small, it was classed as a double but felt like a queen? I cannot comment for certain but it felt very small. 1 fairly flat pillow each to sleep on. There was door in our room which was locked and on the other side of that door was another room. The neighbours had the tv on all night long and there was little way to block the noise on. At times it felt like they were in our room! The outside grounds is beautiful but inside is fairly run down. You can see where they have tried to paint and patch things but it really felt like it was falling apart in places. Examples of this was the ladies toilets off reception and the stairs leading down to reception the steps near the top are unstable. The bar is small with only a small selection of each type of drink. We had a drink in the lovely garden area where there were evening menus on the tables so keen for some ideas for dinner we had a look. When dinner time came round we asked if we could eat outside as it was such a lovely summer evening and were told no not unless we had a dog. We did not have a dog so we went into the dining room and were seated immediately where a menu was placed on our table. A different smaller menu than what we’d seen on the tables outside. There was 4 options on the mains menu and no prices displayed so when the waitress came over we had to ask her to explain. We were told that they weren’t serving the food on the menu outside and we would need to pick 1 of the 4 options. We both chose the chicken as none of the 4 options appealed to us however chicken is a safe bet. It was a safe bet. Few potatoes, piece of chicken and gravy was what came. There was nothing wrong with it only that it was our holidays and wer paying for a meal and something I’d whip up at home myself wasn’t what I thought would be our only option. I saw other people’s plates and apart from the change in meat type the story was all much the same. After cycling a good chunk of a hilly Hadrian’s wall I was looking forward to a little treat of a meal! But we left the dining room still hungry. Breakfast wasn’t included in our stay and based on dinner we decided to cycle on to Corbridge for our breakfast. £110 for a small double bed, £20 for few potatoes and chicken. Not worth it sorry!

As it’s the only place to stay in Chollerford it has a monopoly of the market. Beautiful grounds and gardens right beside the river. Easy check in. Room was ok, need better pillows as only 1 and very flat. Nice pool area. Food is very low quality, chicken wings and battered fish very cheap and overcooked. Breakfast was only 1 of each item (sausage etc) and not very hot.The staff were excellent. In particular, Serg, who was very friendly and helpful, he really made our stay feel welcome.

Evening meals were good, especially the vegetables. (The carrots were superb). Unfortunately the heating in the dining room was totally inadequate, which is unsatisfactory, especially since lots of coach parties of elderly people go there. Another guest went off and came back wearing a coat. The bedroom?....Room was freezing after heating went off at approx. 11.00 and didn't come on again until 6.45 a.m. As with my visit last year, I had to ask for a heater and blanket. I wonder if it makes any difference complaining? Unfortunately, no one else seems to. I will not be returning after this experience. Such a shame, as the newly- refurbished spa area was a vast improvement.
