This place was absolutely rancid I would never go again the sausage was exploded and chewy couldn't finish I ordered with another family member and they said the fish wasn't right at all I thought I was gonna be sick it's vile never go and also I couldn't understand the "manager" I'm shocked first and last visit horrible

We came here a few months ago and the fish and chips were really good. Two older men (over 50) were behind the counter and very friendly. The seating area was nice, clean and inviting. Came back yesterday- not sure if the shop has been bought over but the chips were like the day befores, overcooked and cold despite waiting for about 15mins for our meal. Fish was awful and the interior looked like it hadn't been cleaned for about 2 days. Dirty tables with half eaten food and the floors were littered with bits of food and general dirt. Will not be back!!

Horrible food. We went to get fish and chips and we got a rebattered and refried fish, cold chips owner or manager, can’t remember fought with us claiming we ate half the fish and saying ‘you don’t like my food’ and only gave us a partial refund. One of the staff did go to a shop and buy my sister an Iron Bru so decent service. Would not recommend.

Catastrophe there. The fries smelled totally rancid and that's how it tasted or not at all. We left the food there and left disappointed.

Very kind staff. The fish and chips, they were next level. The fish was fresh and massive, I felt mega value for the money and the chips were spot on. Cooked fresh to. I'm a fussy about propper fish and chips but these were well worth the wait and cost !!!

I have just had the most appalling experience on a visit to a food establishment. After waiting on food being prepared, I was astounded at what the member of staff thought was acceptable chips to serve! Fortunately I asked to see them before leaving with them. A box of chips with around 30% full of black eyes from poorly prepared potatoes , 30% completely dried out * lying about the hot box too long . When I asked the member of staff were they serious about serving that quality she got very defensive, very insolent and accused me of being rude 😂😂 when I asked for a refund I was then asked "who do you think you are?" 🙄 it turns out she was the manager ! Managing herself as she was the only person in the establishment. I can only assume that this shop is so quiet they don't need anyone to help or nobody could suffer working a shift with this awful person. PLEASE AVOID! Disgusting customer service . On the plus side once I was refunded I walked across the road and got lovely fish and chips and great service at Coulls!

Myself and my partner decided to come here for a change instead of our usual place. Both ordered Haddock and Chips, the shop was quiet at that time and there was a bit of a wait for our food but we didn't mind too much at least we thought the food would be freshly cooked. The fish was really good the batter was light and crisp and the chips were really good too. The interior seating area looks really nice and clean too although we had our food to takeaway.

Our experience.A family of five. First impressions. Very rude spoke over the top of me and they looked like they didn't want to cook for us. An hr before closing. Five orders and the only thing that was half decent was the sausage probably the only fresh thing that was made. Chips and cheese wasn't great either. The cheese was a dollop in the corner. That could rub out my daughter's school work. The pizza was burnt to an inch of its life. You could smash a window with it. The chips were old. Dry. Un edible. £26 straight in the bin. First time visiting and last. Lessons learned here.

Traveled from Durham to Berwick for fish n chips. Was not disappointed.

Person who served us never asked about sauces as I think she wanted out as she was finishing but all the same ask but other than food was very good

Just popped in for our tea after a long day at work , ordered Fish chips and gravy , two out of three ain't bad , COLD CHIPS , come on , 7.30pm you would expect hot chips eh Next time we are working here we will try alternative establishment

Usually the food is good but this time Sunday 3rd March 2024) the haggis was very stodgy and the batter was tough. Also not near enough chips as I've usually had. Maybe a one off but annoying after doing the 9 mile trip home only to find this. ☹️ May try elsewhere in the future.

Haddock was lovely, mushy peas lovely, only a few people in.

Chicken had pink in it hair in pizza and pizza way to much salt couldn’t even eat it was that salty

Salty burgers, rotten cabbage. I asked the gentleman if the burger was the same as in the stock photo, with salad and he assured me it was even tho the menu didn't include salad for the burger. My partner ordered the chilli burger which comes with (not so) fresh chilli's, chilli sauce (just enough to be a paste) and (invisible) onions We sat in as the restaurant was empty, a take away order was collected but the lady and her kids who came to pick up the order had to wait 15 minutes, the same amount of time it took to defrost our burgers and chips. No where we were told there was a service charge of £1.49 for sitting in and we felt over charged. The lettuce was rotten and I had to take a napkin and spit into it. The chips were reasonably tasty and so we eat then and left. Would recommend to stay clear and let this restaurant close down due to its own ignorance. Gentleman was genuinely a very nice individual, I suspect him to be the cook aswell however he's genuinely a nice and welcoming guy. Establishment is one of the cleanest in the whole of Northumberland.

Friendly and very helpful staff always willing to answer any questions, food arrived hot and was delicious, while enjoying the very clean, comfortable and warm seating area

Absolutely delicious fish and chips..!!! We stopped on our way from Leeds to Dundee and it turned out to be a great experience. The place is neat and spacious inside, and they have a load of variety including pizzas, wraps and shawarmas. We’ll definitely use this as a resting stop on future trips.

This was our 2nd visit of our trip to Berwick because we were so impressed with the 1st! The food was piping hot, tasty and generous portions. Service was excellent, friendly and helpful. Would recommend giving this place a go

Just had a large fish and chips super fresh not overbattered and soggy chips were almost gourmet like just fantastic my friend ordered the pizza again fresh toppings just the right balance very well done. Very reasonably priced with a pot of tea around 28 pounds which is an absolute bargain

They charged me 4.20 for what was meant to be a large chips. What I got was a kids size portion of chips. My polystyrene container felt so light I checked there and then in the seated area, when I went back to say the portion was far too small and could they sort it I was met with snarky remarks and derision as if I was the mad one. They won't last much longer at this rate. I definitely won't be going back.

Ordered online for pick-up. It was the only chippy we could find in the area that had multiple veggie options. They had battered halloumi that was cooked to perfection, would definitely recommend.

The gentleman who waited on us was friendly and helpful. We had fish and chips several places across Europe and this was our favorite. Both the fish and chips were crisp, yet not greasy. So good!!!

Friendly staff, lovely food ( mixed meat special) only let down slightly by the overcooked donna meat, obvious been cooking a while without being shaved, there was more than enough good meat for me so not really a problem.

Ordered through just eat delivery came with items missing, portion sizes for a toddler and food stone cold, phoned up to complain to be met with the owner who denied there was missing items I continued to explain only to be bombarded with shouting abuse and threatening language (he soon got shut down). Avoid this place like the plague absolutely disgusting way to run a business.

Asked for fungi parmo and its supposed to come with chips extra chips and fish and chips we live 8 miles from town get home to no chips with the parmo extra chips barely any, fish and chips well hardly any chips tried ringing no answer will not use again we are locals as well.

Ordered a large portion of chips to take out for the two of us. At £4.20 thought this was a bit expensive, but guessed the portion size would at least be good. Money taken before order received, which is unusual in most chippies, and once ready our order was conveniently kept out of our view until fully wrapped and passed onto us. later on, upon opening the carton, we had a portion size that would not be acceptable as a regular size in most other establishments, and the chips were obviously reheated/refried! An absolute rip off - strongly suggest you give this place a wide berth and use Coulls across the road instead

Ordered fish and chips and paid 9.25,service is decent although I waited a while, I was pretty excited as I thought it was gonna be a decent portion for the price. Also paid 35p for one sauce which I’ve never have had to pay for sauces before in my life in other places. Went on my train back to Newcastle opened the pretty big fish and chip box to find the box barely half filled with chips and a measly fish. Really disappointed. Wont be coming back next time I visit Berwick

We were looking for a sit in chippy on our holiday. Lovely clean restaurant, really friendly staff (singing his head off). The food was freshly cooked,huge portions and great value for money!! Top nosh!!

Absolutely amazing fish n chips! We were staying at the nearby Haven but really wanted proper fish n chips and Castlegate Chippy didn't fail to hit the spot. The fish was massive which is always a hit! Will defo come again if in the area.

We placed and received a very large order for a family meal. It was served and cooked really well and by friendly staff.

Brilliant little find on our day trip to Berwick. Popped in for lunch and was very impressed. Guy who served us was welcoming, jovial and kind. The food was delicious! Kids got half fish and chips, which was even devoured by our picky eater! Hubby had full fish and chips and cleared his plate. I got the fish platter and it was amazing! Half fish, calamari, scampi and fish cake (couldn't finish so had to share haha!). Great prices, nice atmosphere, clean and lovely sesting area. Highly recommend. (No photos as well all dug straight in!)

Restaurant is nothing like in most of pictures!! Tried ordering off of menu but staff said wasn't on their till system?! Doner kebab with pitta bread was literally plate of doner and uncut pitta bread. No sauce, no salad nothing. However fish platter was nice but again after asking what it consisted off only got 4 of the items. No crab no squid. Would not go back sorry.

What a fall from grace, use to be the best chippy in Berwick. Now it’s been taken over it’s absolutely awful.

Fish was lovely, burger greasy and chips were small in portion and overdone, fish and burger cooked to order so we’re nice and hot, rather pricey for what was served but you do get service with a pleasant smile.

Fish and chips were great! The service was very friendly. We wanted to get take away food because of the dog, but we were warmly invited to take the dog into the restaurant and eat there. We even got an additional portion of fries on the house. We recommend!

The food was tasty and the portion size was very good. Also, the price was reasonable and the sitting arrangement was exceptionally large for a Fish & Chips shop. Staffs were very friendly and helpful; the young lady at the counter clearly explained the halal options and the gentleman (perhaps the owner) was very welcoming. Highly recommended, especially if you are looking for a fulfilling halal meal at Berwick.

Popped into this place before getting a train back to Newcastle where we're staying. Ordered haggis and chips, then waited an eternity. The girl behind the counter told me it was ready and then asked if I wanted salt and vinegar, to which I replied yes. The food was already bagged up! On arriving at the station and opening the bag, if appeared the haggis had somehow turned into a soggy battered fish. The chips were awful too, but whilst we were waiting we saw a couple eating in and they left most of theirs, so it came as no surprise. Avoid like the plague!

Popped in for some chips at lunch time, really fresh and tasty and lots of them. The person who served me was very pleasant and even explained when I asked what else they had to offer, it all looks very tasty. The premises has been completely renovated since last time I was here and looks really nice with a large comfy great sit-in area for everyone.

Best Hadock fish and Halal Lamb donner pizza with garlic and herbs. The owner is a wonderful kind soul he gave my friend a free water bottle and his hospitality was wonderful. He asked me where I was visiting from. I told him USA and he made me feel so comfortable at his restaurant with his great service and witty jokes. 🌺❤️🌺

Overcharged. Ordered fish, chips and peas, but didn't give peas. Didn't notice until left.

We called in last week after a show at the maltings, staff were busy and pleasant, there were a few customers. We had quite a wait for the food to be cooked. We took the fish and chips with us to eat at home, sadly they were inedible, the fish was burnt and swimming in dirty oil, the chips tasted of dirty oil it all went in to the bin!

Staying in Berwick for the weekend. Came back from Edinburgh after a pub crawl, got chatting to the owner about the political and econmocal state of Egyp over a pot of clove tea, kebab and a pizza. A much needed sobering and refreshing conversation before further frivolity in Berwick!

Ordered cod n chips and was given 2 scrappy bits of fish. Asked for extra vinegar and saw the guy pour loads on buy couldn't taste any on the food. Charged £2.30 for bottle of pop takeaway. Is a better chippy just up the road.

Slow service and chips were not great. Latte too strong couldn't drink it.

Really poor I'm afraid, worst chippie I've been to in years. 35 minute wait for fish and chips, the fish was ok, the chips were inedible, hard and dried out, had obviously been sitting for a very long time. No dedicated fryer so one person trying to serve and cook is not going to work.

Got 2 pizzas and large chips, I have seen more chips in a small bag, they were dry looked and tasted like reheats

Fish was decent, but the chips weren't great, and it wasn't cheap for what we got. We ordered chips and a half-size fish portion each, but got a measly smattering of (not great) chips, and it still set us back nearly £20.

Delivery was 2+hours.wasnt happy at all. To be fair the food was quite good. But to top off the wait the order was incomplete and the juice that had been ordered had not been delivered. No point in phoning as no one answered the phone ggor the last 2 hours.

Very poor chicken shawarma. Cold shavings of dried out chicken. If you are ordering this, get lots of chilli sauce to add a bit of moisture and flavour. It didn't poison me though 🙃 Chips were also below average.

Delivery times needing to seriously addressed, due to be here at 20:10 - 20:30 it eventually arrived at 20:49, needles to say it was COLD just as well we had a microwave to heat it up as for the doner pieces with pitta bread THAT WAS IT, DONER PIECES and PITTA BREAD, nothing else, no sauce, nothing, enjoy your meal !! NOT

NOT THE PROPER I WAS EXPECTING 😒 This was my (hope) for delivery 👎🚫 (New Zealander visiting) i was told that this place was a go to for fish n chips I was told that it’s “proper” however going off of recent reviews I’m not hopeful that I’ll be receiving my meals in a timely manner. We’ve been waiting over an hour now. Very disappointing! I’m hopeful that the wait will be worth it!

My family and I went to castle gate chippy as we’ve stopped off at Berwick on way home from Edinburgh, we’ve been for a meal here before and it was nice so thought we would go again today, we had small fish and chips twice and Donna kababs and chips pot of tea twice and 1 hot chocolate and mushy peas , we got told that it was table service so we waited 10 minutes before I asked the lady at counter if she was coming to take our order only to be told we had to go to the counter to ask for it so I did, it then took 20 for the food to come out and then we had to wait an 10 to 15 minutes for the hot drinks ti come and 1 cup was dirty so we asked for a clean cup then we had to wait another 10 minutes for the sauce , if we are in the area again we will not be returning to this chippy again as we was very disappointed at the service.

We went into this chippy at 6.10pm to order a takeaway of Cod and Chips, half fried chicken portion and a carton of peas. There were no other customers waiting to be served. After sitting for 20 minutes watching the tv which was showing a repeat of sky news on the day Boris Johnson resigned (????) the female server asked if I wanted salt and vinegar - I said no thanks so she wrapped up the cod and chips and reminded her I had also ordered peas. The phone then rang, so she answered and proceeded to take a VERY long phone call for a large delivery leaving my cod and chips on the counter. Eventually I am given my food and go home, less than 5 minutes away. The food was luke warm, the fish was all batter and definitely reheated, the chicken was dry and the peas ......were gravy!! My advice for anyone wanting fish and chips in Berwick is go across the road.

a very very small plate was used which presented a fair old task trying to keep chips on the plate... chips seemed to be a reproduction job. i used to visit this place before it was modernised and was excellent. now the seating is right next to a very cold open door. turn back the clocks to how it used to be.... its unfortunately a no go for me next time....

Stood in queue for ages only for customers, that came in after us, to be served before us. Charged for ketchup but never received it. Very poor customer service and staff that are very rude and ignorant.

Burnt nonexistent fish with so much grease it was inedible. Chips were hard and dry and tasted like dirty oil. Such a shame as Castlegate was always a firm favourite.

SEE EDIT BELOW. I would highly recommend the Castlegate Chippy. The food is delicious and the service was excellent. I would especially recommend the chicken parmesans. Top notch. EDIT: Above is my original review. Since posting this, my experiences with this restaurant have been much less positive. Most of the time the food takes much longer than quoted. A much bigger issue than this though is the general inconsistency with each order. Even very simple orders tend to have multiple things missing, cold, or overcooked. The last order, for example, was missing the sauces that normally accompany the parmos. The Lebanese salad that can be absolutely lovely was replaced with a very small portion of unseasoned, undressed, lettuce, green pepper, and onion. I can't remember what the salad costs, but this was a disgrace for what we got. The parmos themselves were missing the garlic butter that they normally have, were massively overcooked, and one was missing jalapenos, which were replaced by chunks of green pepper instead. It's annoying because the food can be excellent, but it's slowly starting to put me off using them again because I just never know what state my meal will arrive in.

Chips were ok. Batter was terrible. Previously good. Now a do not recommend.
