She was charming and friendly and allowed me to stay outside waiting for my friends to return with the car. If I lived closer I would definitely be back but as this was an away day ride who knows? All I will say is landlady is lovely and it looks a good pub. Oh yes and thanks landlady for saving my life!☺️

We moved to Barkway a few months ago and we class this pub as our favourite local, we visit after a long walk with our dog at least once a week. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Lots of outdoor seating when the sun is out and well behaved dogs are welcome :) Rather than having a restaurant there they often host pop up restaurants and gourmet food stalls/mobile restaurants. This is such a great idea and provides variety as well as sampling some of the local restaurants. We recently went for the stone oven baked pizzas by Fräulicious on a Friday evening and they were so delicious- the German pizzas were to die for, can't wait for them to visit again. We are looking forward to trying the mobile pie caterers too when they next visit!

Had a lovely meal on a Sunday, roast really was delicius - beef from Doel's in Buntingford is always a winner! The only negative was that there was a trainee on the bar, and the lady training him was speaking to him in such a demeaning manner, it made myself and my husband feel rather awkward. We just don't feel like it's ever appropriate to talk to people in such a way, especially in front of customers. We definitely would have stayed longer for more wine if we didn't feel so uncomfortable. The young lad was doing a stellar job though, and whilst nervous, was polite and efficient. Hopefully this is a one off on a busy service, as we'd love to come back to try the regular main menu soon.

When a good local pub gets an new chef it can be hit or miss. Fortunately for the Tally Ho, James is a big hit. The quality and presentation of the food is way above what you would expect. Service is also excellent with Charli front of house - they are a great team!Fortunately for us its only a short walk to the pub but its well worth travelling to experience. The Tally Ho now has the best food for many miles around.

Visiting son and daughter-in-law in Barkway, so took them there for a meal. Excellent value. Portions, not huge, but excellent quality. I had sea trout and my wife had fish and chips with mushy peas which were very unusually flavoured - would like the recipe! The slight downside was that the chips were frozen, but very nicely cooked. This is excellent value food. People with large appetites might still feel hungry, but larger portions would push up the price, so happy with it as it is.

Excellent staff - very attentive and friendly. Portions are about right although those with enormous appetites might feel that they could manage to eat more. However, for the price it is good value. I had sea trout which was good but with a tiny portion of vegetables. My wife had fish and chips which she said was excellent, but the chips were cooked from frozen which was a bit of a disappointment, although this did not detract from their quality. However, given the reasonable price and quality for us and our son and wife, it deserves top rating.

We have written a review before for food in the Tally, but they now have a new chef and front of house hostess, and they have together reinvented the whole Tally experience. You don't expect this level of fine dining in a friendly country pub, it really is very special. The menu changes on a regular basis to reflect the ambition and talent of the chef, and each time we want to try everything on there. It's possible to eat three courses (most pubs in our experience confuse quantity with quality), and we thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. The service matched the quality of the food and despite being busy, seemed to be effortless. If you think you know the Tally, think again, they have really raised the culinary bar in Hertfordshire (and yes, Pun totally intended...)

After work my colleague and I decided to get a pub lunch, after about 4 different pubs that was closed or didn't serve food we was pointed in the tally HO by another pub in the next village, we was greeted by the traditional village pub folk around the bar and the bar staff with a smile! She took our order and we sat down waiting for our food to arrive, the bar waitress came over to double check my drink order (that I'm happy with as I have had several who assume a totally different drink) our drinks arrived followed by our food shortly after, we both had the fish and chips that came with chunky tartar and real mushy peas! The peas had a unusual taste so we asked a member of staff about this and was told it had truffle oil infused, the fish was flakey and batter crisp and not full of oil, The meal itself was delightful and will come back again when in the area next!

On babysitting duty tonight, so took the two grandsons for dinner here, with my husband. Love this pub. Since our last visit, the menu has changed slightly. I had the most delicious ribs and my husband fish and chips. The children had half portions of mains and they seemed to enjoyed theirs too. The three boys had puddings and they disappeared very quickly. The young lady who served us was lovely and we appreciated the attention she paid to the children. One little point. There was a rowdy group in the bar to start with and my young grandson commented he heard some bad language when he visited the toilets, which was not too impressive. I had already heard it too. Nevertheless it's a really nice village pub.

Booked this for a couples evening out as we have been several times before and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my friends wife was being 'difficult' about the menu, saying she didn't like this, she didn't like that and she wouldn't have come if she'd seen what was on offer etc. Our waitress took it all in her stride and made a number of helpful suggestions, eventually offering a combination of foods, some on offer, and some not actually on the menu. The result rescued the meal and harmony restored. All very good, and the extra star because of her efforts, but if I was eating here only with my wife, I would have been disappointed in that in our last 3 visits over a period of several months, the menu has not changed (apart from specials) and thus only 3 stars would have been awarded. Come on Tally Ho, your cooking is good but vary it up a bit!

Visited this pub for a Sunday Roast based on recommendations. As soon as you walk in you are met with friendly staff in an open restaurant setting with all the sunday papers laid out for you to browse at your own perusal. 2 of us ordered a roast; 1 beef and 1 spatchcock chicken, the 3rd ordered the Tally Burger. We didn't have to wait to long and what was presented to us was both beautifully plated and presented as well as tasting as good as it looked. The portions are generous and worth the money. We ordered the onion rings as a side (always goes well with a roast!) and the size of them blew us all away! Again they were just as tasty as they looked. You can tell the staff take pride in this place and that the chef truly enjoys his job. Each dish had attention and passion put into it and we could not recommend enough. Despite being full from the dinner we all ordered dessert. Eton Mess, Chocolate Brownie and selection of ice creams were our choice and again we could not complain about any of them. We will definitely be returning midweek to sample their main menu and would highly recommed for a real country inspired roast dinner.

Popped in here for a Sunday lunch. We were told there was a new chef and that he had written a book, though I don't know who he was. The food was good, it could have been better with a couple of tweaks (toasted brioche bun for burgers, home made chips instead of bog standard pre made ones). The pub itself is light and airy, great for lunch with family and friends, and is dog friendly too. The staff were really helpful and friendly, and the beer and wine was good quality. After hearing lots of good things about The Tally Ho, we visited for lunch one Friday. The staff were especially friendly and helpful throughout, but we did find the menu quite limited. We discovered there was a sandwich menu only because another table had them. There was no pie option at all. Having said that, all the food we had was great, chips very nice, and the sticky toffee pudding was probably the nicest I've ever had. Having mentioned to a friend I had been, they had also visited recently and commented on the limited menu, however they had picked off the starters list and had them made into lunch sized portions, so that might be an option for others.

Went to dinner Saturday for the first time and was impressed with the decor beer and menu but somehow it just didn't achieve the sum of its partsDishes on the menu were not available though there was only a few people in, the waitress tried hard and was very pleasant but was obviously new , the meals were not well executed ( chips overdone, fish over cooked, lasagne lukewarm and tart scalding) No sign of landlord or landlady who were advised as absent. It really didn't seem worth complaining as the staff were trying their best and the story was that an overbusy lunch had left them in some difficulty. Benefit of the doubt is that it was a one off .. But the pub was very quiet so maybe not. Shame as it has the appearance of a really nice country pub.

Just been to the Tally Ho in Barley for dinner. Absolutely appalling. Firstly it was dead only 9 people in there including us on a Saturday night. No pate or Pie of the Day - it was busy at lunchtime!!! What did the chef do all afternoon, I ask myself?? The starters were from a Brake Brothers box. We both fancied steak, as we had fish yesterday - nothing like that on the menu. My wife ordered veg lasagne - no more than 5mm thick and just dreadful. I ordered the burger. Came up burnt. No skinny fries, just fat soaked chips with little potato in them. For the first time I can remember, we paid for what we had and left. Which was the starters and the drinks. Lovely staff - chef on holiday!! I hope for their sake!!

From the start the service was extremely good and we were welcomed and taken to our table immediately. Excellent service with a smile ! We were shown to our table drinks orders taken promptly and given time to make our selection from the menu. We all had the roast dinner two had beef, one the lamb and one the pork. Meat was good, veggies too Yorkshires a bit dry but it was served on a cold plate so the pink lamb and the red beef were barely luke warm making the lamb very greasy, which was a shame as the food was well cooked and presented. When it came to pudding one had the crumble BUT they had run out of ice cream that was specified on the menu so they had to have custard instead. Two had the creme brûlée which was very poor, served in a deep cup with a saucer it was a disaster as it had separated and curdled! To be fair to the Tally Ho they did not charge us for them. We would go back though.

Close friends of ours live in Barkway and highly recommend it so we gave it ago.Me and my girlfriend were impressed with the good level of service, the range of gins they offer. The chef Jason was provided a wonderful menu, classic pub food dishes done very well, with a few one of dishes thrown in.Will carry one going there.

Earlier today I dropped my dog at the Groomer in Vanstone Parks Garden Centre, my car to the car wash guys then went into the cafe after a look around the garden centre. It was just after noon. I ordered an omelette with salad and crisps with a pot of tea. Paid for my order and sat outside with my plant pot which had my order number on. The waitress came out with a pot of tea, going well so far! When the waitress brought my order it was an omelette on a rather large plate! I asked where the salad was and was advised this it the breakfast menu, you don’t get anything with it then walked away. I thought I’d read the menu incorrectly until the lady who also sat outside was served an omelette with enough salad you could say it had its own garden! What a pity the service wasn’t a patch on it as when the previous owners/ managers ran the Orchard Cafe. The Groomer did a lovely job on my dog and the car valets made my car sparkle. Just been let down by the cafe’ won’t be going there again

First visit to The Jester... Friendly welcome. Quick & efficient service. Food: Superb roast, a well presented hearty plate. Chicken stuffed with spinach, roasties, Yorkshire pudding with vegetables on the side. My partner had the Roast Pork which was equally tasty. Honey comb cheesecake didn’t touch the sides! A delight not to have to cook Sunday lunch, thank you all. We will be back 🙂

Having been recommended to eat at this pub we were very disappointed with the Sunday lunch today. Food wasn’t hot. Beef was tough, one of our party struggled to eat it. Mentioned this to a member of staff who apologised but no further recompense offered. We dined in what appeared to be a shed, cold air blowing through gaps in the structure.
