First visit to The Jester... Friendly welcome. Quick & efficient service. Food: Superb roast, a well presented hearty plate. Chicken stuffed with spinach, roasties, Yorkshire pudding with vegetables on the side. My partner had the Roast Pork which was equally tasty. Honey comb cheesecake didn’t touch the sides! A delight not to have to cook Sunday lunch, thank you all. We will be back 🙂

Seven of us gathered for Sunday lunch including two vegetarians. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly, the food was excellent and it was very good value for money. The two vegetarian options were homemade and tasty and there was vegetarian gravy available. Everyone felt the meat was good quality and well cooked and the Yorkshire puddings were a highlight! One of our party was curious to try the fried ice cream for pudding and enjoyed it. Overall it felt like a home from home experience. We will definitely be back for more

On our way home from holiday and decided to pop in for curry night. We went in with the children and we were all welcomed. The food was lovely and fresh, not greasy like you can often have with a restaurant curry. All home made in house. Delicious. The normal menu was also served and the children chose off of the kids menu. Apparently the mash was delicious. Staff are really friendly and make you feel so welcome.

Lovely carvery today, 7 of us arrived out for a family lunch, the smell of the roasts was very welcoming as you walked in, and a warm welcome from the owners and staff too. We had a large table by the bar and drinks were very reasonable. The carvery meats were succulent, and there was an array of vegetables to choose from, home roast potatoes and giant homemade yorkies with steaming hot gravy, and a table full of all the condiments you could think of. Very impressed, a great Sunday lunch in a lovely English pub, we will definitely be back, thank you

We visited the Jester just before Christmas for Christmas lunch. It was wonderful and excellent value for money. The Jester has a new Chef and it shows. He is very good. Not only was the food good but very plentiful. I even had a dessert and I rarely have a dessert. Recommended. Give it a try.

My wife and I booked this small hotel because it was close to the village of Ashwell where we were having a Christmas meal with three other couples. We were able to book in early as the room hadn’t been used the previous day. We were made welcome by a member of staff and met the owner Bass who had only been there for 4 months but had big plan’s for the place. Our room was twin bedded with a double and single bed. The room was a good size, clean but the decor was a little tired however it met our needs. The only downside was that the room was above a function suite which had a very loud disco. We had no advance notice of this but were told in conversation that it would stop at 11.30 but went on until midnight. I would urge any potential guests to check for functions before booking. Maybe sound proofing the function room would be an answer. Breakfast was fine and had everything you would expect although a few pastries would have been nice. Didn’t experience dinner but the menu was the usual pub grub. The best of luck to the new owner however more needs to be done to make this hotel exceptional.

We had a get together here with friends who were staying over. This was our first time here since it has been taken over and the two guys are working hard to get it back on track but will need time to get a client base back. The food was decent enough but not enough to give that Wow factor, although value for money was pretty good. The drinks are quite pricey, more than nearby Royston and Baldock. I wish you well but think it may be a long process in turning it round.

If you’re a little country pub with tired furniture and nothing but room and board to offer, you have to do it really well. This “country inn” !! Is just a tired little pub. I wouldn’t normally have chosen to stay here but the Duxford air show had filled the beds and I needed one business overnight. I hoped for clean sheets - they looked clean but then I found blood spots on the duvet cover! I hoped for a basic menu of half decent grub. I thought I was safe with ham egg and chips - packet ham with two eggs so burned on the back they were crisp and curled up at the edges. They replaced them but I had lost any inclination to eat at that point and left most of it on the table. The bed was strangely scratchy - didn’t want to think why - so I wrapped my pillow in a T shirt and hoped for sleep - when the trains and the traffic had stopped. The corridor fire door was propped open with a fire extinguisher -!!- so I closed it to stop the smokey atmosphere and food smell, which weirdly seemed to infect one end of the upstairs corridor, from reaching my room. Couldn’t wait to check out. Will someone fly the flag for the great British pub with rooms because this one certainly isn’t.

This venue is under new ownership and we hadn't been there for several years. There were 3 generations of our family had a meal there to celebrate a birthday. The menu was good - all cooked well and an excellent and good value children's menu. Excellent specials - goat curry and vegetarian dishes are noteworthy. Friday was fish and chip night and very good value for 2 courses. The chef came out to speak to us, and we felt like we were important customers. We'll certainly be back.

We visited this country inn for Sunday lunch as friends had recommended it. Starters was a small bowl of creamy garlic mushroom soup with crusty bread. As mushroom soups go, this was not bad. It contained many finely chopped mushrooms but personally I prefer my mushrooms a bit larger. There was not enough garlic for me but others enjoyed it. For main it was roast topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding. It came with a roast potato and gravy. There was a dish of carrots, cabbage, broccoli and boiled new potatoes. I found the beef a little tough for my liking. The roast potato was a bit too crispy for me but others like it that way. The veg was cooked just right for me and the gravy was nice and tasty. For me, the star of the plate was the Yorkshire pud. It reminded me of my mothers which she cooked in either dripping or lard. Cooked just right, this was scrummy. I had syrup sponge pudding with custard for afters. This was a good choice. It was nice and fluffy with loads of syrup and nice creamy custard. All in All, an above average meal but not great. Service was good and a couple of shipyard ales helped the meal down nicely. Maybe worth another visit to sample the weekly menus.

I recently attended this pub for Dinner after hearing good things.... I had heard wrong. Upon arrival the pub was rather empty for such a so called "popular" place, I was greated with an "alright" in a rude manner by the barman, I sat down with my drink and ordered my Dinner which for what I received wasn't worth the rather long wait but having to ask for cutlery after the meal had arrived was very annoying. I had the lasagne which looked lovely but as for taste I have my suspicion it wasn't freshly made and was sloppy which is unacceptable at £8.25 I have had better ready meals for £2.I went to the bar after I had eaten my "meal" to order another drink from the rather rude barman who was more bothered about his mobile phone than serving me, but I eventually recieved my drink and paid my tab but when 9.50pm came I was given hints by the barman to leave as he wanted to go home even though I hadn't finished my drink. I shall not be returning to this pub as there are much nicer ones in Ashwell less than a mile down the road.

After a long drive visiting family we decided to pop in to The Jester country inn in the hope of getting fed and watered.First impressions were good.. Clean and friendly. The bar and restaurant was very busy with diners and drinkers but we were acknowledged almost immediately and asked if we wanted to eat. We were advised that it maybe 15-20 mins before we were able to get a table in the restaurant but we had a drink and waited. Within 10 mins our order was taken and we were shown to a table. (I must add, just at the back was the most gorgeous well kept garden complete with pond and wild bird feeders, very nice to watch whilst eating)I ordered the Seabass fillet and I must say it was divine, very good taste and cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the chicken stir fry and it looked very appealing with all the bright colours and variety of fresh vegetables. The waitress was very accommodating and had a friendly personality. Now the best bit...... Desserts! We both had the mint truffle and it was heaven on a plate, very well presented and went down a treat! We ate and requested our bill which was. Very reasonable and bid the staff farewell. All in all a very impressive visit. Keep up the good work! We shall see you again very soon!

We turned up for a meal, having visited before and enjoying ourselves. The meal was wrong, the staff got things wrong, one dropped a knife, as not paying full attention to us, nearly lost my glass of wine, gravy everywhere on table. One waitress corrected me and put me down, when I ordered another glass of wine with my meal and at the end, when we raised our concerns with the manager, he did not seem to care, although there was one member of waiting staff who overheard our complaint and was actually very sympathic, although clearly felt uncomfortable and could not say much. We will never go back again and it was an awful and sad experience.

Decided to go and booked a table on Sunday for the same day but found that the carvery is now more. The manageress welcomed us and took us to our table in the conservatory, the only 2 seater table which just happened to be at the window that was faulty therefore unable to look out into the garden. She then after bringing our drinks wanted to take our wine glasses away before we had even decided what we would be eating or indeed if we would like wine. There was only another table of three in when we arrived and we knew when their courses were ready as a massive bellow from the kitchen rung out "SERVICE" we made us jump in our seats. This happened a few more times needless to say!! We both had a starter which to be honest was only OK. The Ribeye of Beef followed and was delivered by the new waitress. I asked if I could see the wine list, which should have been offered earlier, 6-7 minutes later the older waitress bowled up "You want some wine?" "yes please can I see the wine list" "O we haven't got a wine list it is all in my head, red or white?" Huh I thought the idea was to let the customer peruse what was available as part of the experience of food and wine!! anyway selected a red but when you think of it I might have wanted champagne. When we finished we went to the bar to settle up only to wait for a good 10 minutes for someone to attend to us, both waitresses obviously do not do this bit, when the manageress appeared she smelt very highly of cigarette smoke, well we know where she had been. Very poor show you should always be ready to attend the customer. Not a lot of people in for lunch but I remember when it was a cavery it would be bursting at the seams. There tells a tale. Loads of other things I could comment on but do not think there is not enough room on this form!! Under New Management 3 weeks ago - Country Inns chain.

Four of us and my 20month old. Never a good start when I ordered my son, sausage and mash and cut open the sausages and they were raw so had to send them back. We debated leaving before we ordered our meals but decided to stay... Sausage incident had put us off! Food was pretty dire in terms of portions and quality. Mum had sea bass, only one piece of fish. I had salmon, which came with literally 4 new potatoes, husband had gammon, again literally gammon with egg and chips served in a half pint glass! No veg or garnish. Side order of 'grilled tomato and mushroom' expecting vine tomatoes and flat mushroom.... Urm no, just deep fried button mushrooms and a salad tomato. All rather bland and greasy. Mum had a sticky toffee pudding, took like 90 seconds, clearly bad cheap microwave food. Saturday night at 6.30pm and fillet steak and ribeye off the menu.... Really, just poor, It's not home cooked food, just greasy, frozen, poor portions and overpriced. Safe to say definitely not going back here again. Came home and had a nice crusty ham roll as was so hungry. Save your money and go elsewhere. Don't say I didn't warn you!

The Jester is now under new management and the food is FABULOUS! The sirloin steak is the best I have ever eaten in the UK and I will be returning ASAP. The fish and chips are excellent too. Service is efficient and friendly. Highly recommended - visit as soon as you can!

A group of us went to The Jester Country Inn last night for a little get together. I have to be honest and say that when dinner was suggested there, I was very apprehensive due to previous very forgettable experiences there. But was I glad we agreed!! It has being taken over by a very enthusiastic team and what a difference. While it is early days yet, and there is a lot of refurbishment planned, we could not fault the food or service. In fact there of us had the most wonderful fillet steak and two had fish. Food piping hot, served up on proper plates (not those dreadful wooden chopping boards), perfectly cooked as to each persons preference, and really excellent quality. While not huge portions, what was served was delicious. Will definitely be returning.

We were a party of 8 for Sunday lunch. We were offered a limited menu - if the a la carte was available we certainly wasn't offered it. We ordered 4 roast beef, 1 roast turkey, 2 green Thai chicken curry and 1 steak (with surcharge). We sent the Thai curry straight back - it was an appalling white colour which looked as if it had cradled. There was NO curry paste whatsoever. In fairness, the waiting staff took it straight back, and replaced it with 2 roast turkey. Whilst it hadn't curdled, it was dry, tasteless and bland. The same could be said for the beef- in fact it looked as if it had been reheated so many times it was lifeless!! Only one person (with great stamina and obviously hungry!) ate the meal. We ordered dessert, as you can't do much to strawberries and cream. The sticky toffee pudding smelt nice, although the custard was left. we have eaten there before and enjoyed the meal, obviously he kitchen staff have changed. Won't be eating there again.

Ok Sunday Lunch with a family group of 12 people cant get too excited everything was ok the service was acceptable the pricing ok the décor not bad could do with a bit of tidy up. The Beer was in good order choice of Breakspears Best Or Ringwood Best. Cant really complain about anything other than it doesn't excite me in any way. Would not avoid it if someone wanted to meet there but doubt ill return on my own impulse!

The jester inn arranged my son's wedding and they made it effortless for us. They are not greedy always telling us ways to cut the costs. On the day the venue looked so pretty and nearly everyone enjoyed there meal. All I can say is the staff worked so hard to make this a magical occasion.

The Jester is located at the hamlet of Odsey, just off the A505 dual carriageway and opposite Ashwell and Morden Station. In fact, apart from the pub and the station, there is not much else there; the village of Ashwell is about two miles away. The station is on the Cambridge to Kings Cross line and attracts a lot of commuters; as a consequence, the lanes and verges in the locality are congested with parked cars from early morning until early evening. Fortunately, The Jester has its own car park and when we visited for a midweek lunch, there was plenty of space. You have to negotiate a clutter of 'A-frame' notice boards at the front but inside, the main room has plenty of wood and a nice character feel to it.As we approached the bar, we were asked "Are you looking for food?" We said that we were and got the response "We stop food at two; sorry" (it was almost 2.15). We continued our journey towards Ashwell and stopped at the first pub we came to, where we got a warm welcome (and lunch!).This practice of 'stopping food at two' is a hangover from the days when pubs had to close at three, so stopped serving at two, to get everyone out by closing time. When all day opening was introduced, some pubs stayed open and served low margin alcohol but still stopped serving high margin food at two. Unsurprisingly, a lot of them have gone out of business. It may be unrealistic to assess a restaurant without even having seen a menu, so I am assessing The Jester on the basis of our total experience; if we had been 12 minutes earlier, it might have been different!

My son has booked his wedding here for later in the year so I took my other son and partner to see the venue and we stayed for dinner. The food was freshly cooked and the service was quick and friendly. It was far better than average pub grub for a start the menu is better and shows imagination. Everything we ordered arrived piping hot and hadn't come out of a microwave. So we will be looking forward to the wedding.

We went for a Sunday lunch time, and had the Sweet Potatoes and Spinach Curry (with Rice and Naan), salmond filet and steak and ale pie. Portions were average (not huge, not small, but adaquate). Service was fine, and food arrived in good time. We weren't rushed with the dessert, and we had various options: I think the ice cream is really good. We went to please non-vegetarian parents and they were happy with their food.

Earlier today I dropped my dog at the Groomer in Vanstone Parks Garden Centre, my car to the car wash guys then went into the cafe after a look around the garden centre. It was just after noon. I ordered an omelette with salad and crisps with a pot of tea. Paid for my order and sat outside with my plant pot which had my order number on. The waitress came out with a pot of tea, going well so far! When the waitress brought my order it was an omelette on a rather large plate! I asked where the salad was and was advised this it the breakfast menu, you don’t get anything with it then walked away. I thought I’d read the menu incorrectly until the lady who also sat outside was served an omelette with enough salad you could say it had its own garden! What a pity the service wasn’t a patch on it as when the previous owners/ managers ran the Orchard Cafe. The Groomer did a lovely job on my dog and the car valets made my car sparkle. Just been let down by the cafe’ won’t be going there again

Having been recommended to eat at this pub we were very disappointed with the Sunday lunch today. Food wasn’t hot. Beef was tough, one of our party struggled to eat it. Mentioned this to a member of staff who apologised but no further recompense offered. We dined in what appeared to be a shed, cold air blowing through gaps in the structure.
