Very glad to have found this pub after trying 3 others, which were fully booked. What a find! Tremendous food, superbly prepared and cooked to perfection. Very friendly atmosphere. We'll be back!

I was with a group of friends in the pub for lunch todayA beautiful pub and the food was lovely. The lady who served us was very nice, friendly and efficient and looked after us well. She even managed to stay professional when dealing with an obnoxious and impatient customer as I was waiting to pay my bill. I will certainly be returning.

We hadn't been here for some time, despite it being very local to us. The service was most friendly and polite, and the food was very good. Portions were just right and prices reasonable. It's a charming place and kept immaculate. Recommended.

Met a friend here for Sunday lunch. Chose it by chance as a convenient halfway point and were delighted. Food was excellent! Best pub roast I've had in years. Delicious and homemade by the fairly new owners and very friendly service. Would definitely recommend and return.

An impulsive stop on the way back to North London, after a day at IWM Duxford, was so worth it. It's a warm and friendly feeling pub that appeared to be very much part of its local community, which i liked. Their Sunday Roast was hot, tasty, reasonably priced and a very generous portion too - the veg came separately and I was given extra gravy too 🙂. The 3 women serving were so friendly and polite. They were lovely. They checked on me every so often, to see if everything was OK, which I appreciated. I'll definitely stop there again for a Sunday Dinner, as I'll make it part of my route home from North Suffolk now.

There was hair in my food and overall the service was terrible I planned out a nice family Sunday lunch I have never been this disappointed in a restaurant before.

Enjoyed a great family day in super pub gardens and enjoyed a delicious Hog Roast and excellent choice of Ciders. This was our third visit to the Chequers and would definitely recommend their Sunday Lunch offering.

A friendly family-run pub where our walking group were made very welcome. We all enjoyed the various meals we'd ordered and liked the relaxed atmosphere in the pub. I'd definitely go there again.

After viewing a potential new home near by, we stumbled upon the Chequers in Barley. Let’s be fair, you have to research the local pubs before buying a new home!! Nick and his family have launched an amazing family pub, with a real welcoming feeling, dog friendly, amazing food and great selection of beers on draft!! Happy hour is an absolute winner !! Pie and pint for only £15!! Although we did not move to the area after all, the chequers is now our regular haunt and I can’t sing high enough praises for this place! The links bus also stops here, so make sure to take advantage of the happy hour (much more than just an hour). Thank you Nick, Jane, Sophie, Hannah, Alice and Beth !!

Had a fantastic Burns Night meal last night, had a wonderful welcome by the new owner (Nick) and his lovely family. His wife is the chef and makes the most beautiful food. Burns night was a set meal for £27. We had Smoked salmon pate with oat cakes, husband had Haggis and I had a large haddock fishcake with poached egg on top with hollandaise sauce. Our dessert was vanilla ice cream with shortbread and brandy snap with a shot of baileys to pour over the ice cream. Since the family took over the pub the atmosphere is delightful, its like being in your own lounge with friends. Warm fire, cozy seating, very friendly service. Thank you for such a lovely evening!!

The pub had a lovely warm atmosphere and had a real buzz. The family who own the pub are extremely accommodating and welcoming. We’ve eaten in there on several occasions and I’ve never been disappointed with the service or the quality of the food. I would highly recommend the Chequers to anyone who enjoys and warm village pub environment.

Disappointed. We had looked at the festive menu on the website and NOWHERE did it say that the festive menu was only for tables of 6 plus. When we arrived we were greeted with a very limited menu. If it wasn't for the specials that night, there would have been nothing I could eat. We have lived in Barley for over 20 years, going to the Chequers for dinner, when the dining area was in the downstairs, and the higher level with the bar was for the smokers. When Leo and Sofia ran this pub we went there once a month a month pre-covid, several times in the EAT OUT TO HELP OUT period and many times after that. I really think the new owners / managers need to rethink their offering for people who do not eat red meat

We visited for their Beaujolais Nouveau evening. They served a super meal, the owners and staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

Visited for the curry night tonight and it was fab! Great value as you receive the curry you choose with rice, naan and onion Bhaji. All very tasty and well presented. Friendly service and great atmosphere too. Highly recommend!

Booked roast dinner for two on the first weekend under new ownership. Was not disappointed very warm welcome, fantastic quality roast dinner and a good selection of well kept beers. Will be returning!

Went for Mother’s Day. They offered a set menu which was delicious! The mean from the roast was so tender it felt like it melted in your mouth! Service was great also, they are very attentive. First time I had been here and will definitely be going again.

Booked a table for valentines night. We pre-ordered our meals and we met with a smile at the bar. Our three course meal was served promptly by the attentive waitress. The food was lovely. At 8 o’clock the recorded music stopped and we were treated to a live performance by a swing singer, Tom, who entertained us for two and a half hours. A great night thank you

The Chequers is a genuine village pub much used by the locals and a ‘must go to’ for any lover of Italian food. My wife decided that she would like a quiet lunch for her birthday and we found that The Chequers more than met our needs. The owners are very friendly and keen to see that their guests are well looked after and the food is excellent. We had the prosciutto and melon sharing plate to start. This was attractively presented with a portion size large enough for four. The quality of the prosciutto and freshness of the melon were wonderful - a great start to the meal. For the main, we both chose fusilli arrabiata and it was excellent - plenty of spicy meat content with hot chilli sauce around the edge and additional sauces in pots on the table. We were also taken back by the size of the portions. In fact, my wife brought half of hers home for a repeat enjoyable meal later in the day. This is a place that we would recommend very strongly and we have already had friends showing interest in trying it out. They won’t be disappointed!

Whilst on holiday in the area we have eaten at 3 Italian restaurants and this was the best miles. I am GF and they catered amazingly to my dietary requirements. We had the spicy chicken and the seafood pasta"s and both were amazing. When next on holiday in the area we will be going back!

This is a top pub run by welcoming friendly hosts Sofia and Leo who make every visit a memorable one. If I was local this would be my local. Sofia always remembers my name and my favourite tipple!

Just went out to dinner at The Chequers with my elderly parents. We were served by the wonderful Sophia who was welcoming and incredibly kind. We ate well, enjoying ribeye steak and the sea bass and will definitely return!

We came for dinner recently and the food is lovely. Portion sizes are enormous and the waitress can't do enough for you and super friendly. Pub was nice a busy with locals, nice relaxed friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Utterly rude server. Sat down with a pepsi in my hand and was waiting for the server to come out so he can take some orders... he pointed out how rude I am to drink my own pepsi.... before he even asked me or any of the 12 of us if we want to consume anything... needless to say we didn't spend a penny there and could've spent for 12 lunches with drinks. Hope it was worth for him showing who's boss...on the restaurant terrace! Soory but attitudes like these don't belong in the services industry, businesses with these kind of people aren't thriwing and never will.

This is a really great pub. It's changed a lot with the current owners and I hadn't realised until I had a meal there this evening. We were late - they'd technically stopped serving - but they were happy to make us something. And when I say something, I mean the best pasta I've had in a long time. Amazing flavour and quality ingredients, beautifully cooked. They know what they're doing. It was really quiet. They deserve more customers. Go there! It's a lovely atmosphere and extremely friendly. You won't be disappointed.

We had a very enjoyable evening. Dinner & Service was excellent.

Very friendly and welcoming staff. We had two chicken roast dinners, and one beef roast dinner. The food was served hot , and with extra gravy. The roast potatoes were of the pre-packed frozen style- like aunt bessies, and the chicken was not freshly roasted , but from small frozen fillets, without skin or bone. Again the beef was pre- packed and pre-sliced. Overall the meat was bland and tasteless. The vegetables were fresh and delicious. As a comparison, this didn’t match the standard of a regular home cooked roast. At £12-14 per meal and 4 soft drinks the bill was over £50. We did not think this was fair value.
