A hidden gem. The service is warm, welcoming and attentive without being overbearing. The bar is fully stocked with amazing local ales, craft beers and ciders. Similarly, the menu offers a thoughtfully curated selection well-considered, ethically sourced and tasty dishes to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. Although the new landlords have only been operating here since July, the pub is already miles ahead of its nearby competitor (The George Inn) and it seems there are more exciting changes in store for the Tally Ho in the coming months. Throughout warmer seasons, they have a fantastic wood-fired pizza kitchen in the rear garden too.

When our original hotel cancelled on us, we ended up in Hatherleigh for the night. Not wanting to eat in a large place, the Tally Ho was just up the hill so off we went. From opening the door to a cheery 'Hello!' to walking out later the whole experience was fantastic. This is an old pub, full of wood, 2 massive fire places, a bar to sit at and talk BS (they even have a plaque) and enjoy good beer and food. We were lucky to be there on a Wednesday - so 10 quid for a pint and a pie. What a deal! We were offered our choice of sides by the chef - who is passionate about her food - so went for new potatoes and roasties each. Both were served with a good portion of peas. The pies were great - huge pastry top, oh so tender meat, tasty gravy and just right. For a couple of Aussies who wanted to experience England, we just did. We'd be back the next night if we were staying longer but sadly were were off the next day. From what we gather, the pub was getting a new owner in mid-June 2024 so maybe it will get even better. Certainly it seems the menu will be given a change. If you are in the area and want some history I recommend it. 10/10 for me.

Fantastic old pub with a great atmosphere and warming fire, Current chef K is amazing and very accommodating, had a fantastic meal tonight and would highly recommend. Only down side is that there is no Lamb Shank on the menu, bring the IN seasonal cut at the moment and a sheep farming area it is a must for any local pub. Never the less a fantastic meal, top beer and friendly staff.

In the centre of an out of the way town the Tally Ho is well worth the effort of making a detour. A real local pub offering a friendly welcome, a wide selection of drink -the best beer being their own brewed in their own brewery - how good is that. The food is to die for - one of the best steaks I have had and the sticky toffee pud is digustingly wonderful. Go on go there enjoy and forget all that sanctimonious rubbish about dieting.

What a fun and lovely pub dating back to the 16 th century. What can I say. The staff are all locals as are the customers, everyone is so friendly and on Friday nights it seems like half the town comes in to eat and have drinks. They have a early bird menu that is wonderful and inexpensive which the locals take advantage of. They brew their own beer which you can purchase though I prefer Guinness on draft. It’s a must if you go to the moors to visit.

Not our first visit, though it has been a while, and this occasion was with friends for a lunch time meal. Mid-week, so not overly busy in this fairly traditional pub that still brews its own beer, which was on offer along with a couple of others from the 'bigger south-west boys'. Good selection of dishes available for lunch, and what particularly impressed us was the number of vegetarian options. The specials board was perhaps less of interest to vegetarians, or even pescatarians, as the fish had a sauce with bacon. That said, they were very accommodating and replaced the sauce with something more acceptable. Nice and warm interior with wood stove kept well going one end, service very good, and overall, fair value.

Our orders were taken and waitress informed us food will be a while, half an hour to be exact, we didn't mind and was glad we were told. Food arrived before half hour, piping hot and freshly cooked. Not microwaved. Between us we had spaghetti Bolognese, ham egg and chips, hunters chicken and steak peppercorn sauce. Food was delicious. We even got early bird deal even though it was Sunday. So smiles all round. We finished meal with pudding, chocolate brownie. And to make it even better kinder eggs served behind bar so had one of those for treat for daughter. The Tally Ho is a genuine local pub. The quality of the food is good, the prices are very reasonable and quantities of most main dishes are large. The Sunday Roast is a veritable monster of a meal ! I like my food but I have to ask for the 'small' roast to fit it all in.The pub also brews its own excellent ale ... if you like the pale ale end of things, do at least sample the 'Ukulele Ale', its a very good ale.Staff are friendly and the locals are as nice a bunch of people as you are likely to meet in any pub. This is a cosy pub in the centre of the small market town. The bar is well patronised by locals and has a warm and homely feel about it. Good ales are available, and an extensive menu. Although there is a designated restaurant at the back we ate in the bar as it had more atmosphere (and we managed to get the only free table). The food, while nothing outstanding, was good pub food (we had the duck breast and home-made beef lasagne) and the service was friendly. For a warm and cosy pub on a cold January evening (the fire was alight and the bar area perfectly warm enough without coats!) this fitted our requirements perfectly. The only drawback is that it has no car park and street parking nearby can be difficult.

One very cold December evening the warmth and friendliness of an old Devonshire pub was sought .......but on this occasion it was not available. On arrival it was quite some time before we were noticed to enable us to order a drink. After another delay we were able to source a menu, again some time passed before we were allowed to order a meal. The meal when it was served was acceptable but certainly overpriced. We were so cold we were forced to move closer to a wood burning stove, the second. Stove was unlit ,maybe to save on heating bill. Most of the other diners we observed were all wearing their outdoor coats. When we opened up the stove to .let out more heat and so make our stay more comfortable,a member of staff immediately pushed passed us to close the stove ,implying it was against health and safety of leave the doors open. It was a very cold night and the customers were very obviously feeling the cold,on this occasion this pub was very DRAFTY and decidedly chilly certainly NOT. CUSTOMER FRIENDLY

After reading the reviews here we paid a visit to this place and was looking forward to it. When we reached it we found that the garden is not as pretty as one would think. Going into the pub I expected it to be dark as most country pub's are. The tables was sticky and the place was inundated with wasps so much we had to move the back room which looked like a junk room. After two of us ordered the belly pork we jokingly said "knowing our luck there would be only one available" guess what after 10-15 minutes the guy came out and said they only had one left. Seriously cant the chef get his stock right. The guy said we do a good burger but I said I wouldn't eat a burger so I ordered the beef lasagne. Guess what came out. Yep the burger so my brother had it and I had the pork belly. The veg looked as if had been nuked in a microwave but the square fries was nice. The belly pork was edible but not for that price and I could have done better at home myself so I was not impressed. The rest of my group had meals which was OK and the guy did not charge us for the burger. But in all I was not impressed with the whole experience and to be honest this pub should have a 2 star

Amazing atmosphere, good beers and food, a genuine old style country pub, with a good feel about it.

Nice unpretentious pub with good atmosphere, full of locals enjoying themselves. Friendly knowledgeable staff, quick service. Quite interesting menu and v.good value with big platefuls coming out of the kitchen. We couldn't finish our scampi and chips and salad as there was so much of it. IMHO far better food than is served at The George hotel over the road, where we stayed.

Working on the footway outside, could not resist the fish and chips, so first to order once TJ's & LJ's opened for lunch. Crispy batter, very nice cod, and sumptuous chips, completed with salt and vinegar!!
