A bit out of the way, but a lovely place and reasonable prices. Rooms are clean and cozy. Pub is comfortable and homey. Staff is welcoming, accommodating, and kind. Rare to see these days. Basic pub food but everything we had was delicious! Love the loaded fries, veggy tart, and always the Sunday Carvery. This is one of my favorite places to go when hiking the moors.

Went for dinner late on Wednesday evening. Staff were super friendly, food came quick, it looked and tasted great. However I have spent all of last night and today vomiting and feeling so weak I can barely move. Could be coincidence. But it came on only a few hours after the meal.

Stopped for lunch and ordered a veggie burger priced at £16. At that price I'd expect more than a plate of chips and a small burger in a bun with nothing else but a little bit of sauce, but that's what I got.

Good choice of beer and cider. Then it goes down hill! Menu was average, food was worse than average. Bugger was obviously from bulk seller, frozen and little taste, salad was non-existent and the brioche bum had been replaced by a floured bun. Chips however were tasty. A very disappointing meal in what is a lovely location. Wouldn't spend my money there again. Sorry.

Why was it poor? Where do I start? We went for a Sunday roast on Father’s Day. We booked ahead of time. Our table, for 10 only had 6 places, so we had to move a table ourselves because they were so ‘short staffed’. We ordered, having confirmed childrens potrions, small roasts and large roasts. Gravy, by the way, is £2.50 extra. The food came. With all but one having the wrong meat on it. They took the order back. Except for the correct one, which then went cold for the next 12 minutes while we waited. Then the food started to come out with the correct meat, but it seems that the child portions and ‘small’ and ‘large’ roasts are very similarly sized. More on this later. Some plates had three slices of meat, some one. Some had 4 (small) roasted potatoes some had only 2. None had any gravy on them. At all. The food was half decent, if not spectacular. I’ll give them that. Good Yorkshire puddings. Then the ‘chef’ (wearing civvies and an apron) came out to see us, I guess to apologise, but only brought excuses about ‘new staff’. When challenged about the gap in food and the poor service, he just shrugged. When it came to pay, we determined, as a group that the service, food and overall visit wasn’t good enough, so complained. We then found out the following: The only new staff was one person, washing up. There are no small or large portions for roasts. Despite our order and confirmation by the same staff member. In their view, all plates were ‘the same’. Staff didn’t like your complaint and he lost his cool, becoming frustrated and telling me ‘I’ve given you a deal so what more do you want?’. Classy. That our order on the ‘system’ was still incorrect. We received a discount of £9 on the meals and some of our drinks (almost all half soft drinks) gratis. In fact, all drinks except one Guinness. He couldn’t remove this from the tab, I guess. I appreciated their half hearted effort to make things right, but rudeness, a lack of awareness in serving food and a less than pleasant stay mean that I think it is only fair to share our experience and give our reasons for why we will never go back.

When we arrived we were taken to a very basic room, which was more like a cheap cafe, with awful wooden tables and chairs, and a pool table. None of the food we wanted was on the menu - despite it being on the Facebook page menu you are directed to from their website. So we decided to finish our drinks and find somewhere else. We were charged £27 for four drinks! I asked if they’d got it wrong, and was then given back £10 as they’d apparently made a mistake. The couple at a table behind us had both ordered a meal, but the waitress only brought out one for the man. He’d finished his and his wife was still waiting for hers. Turns out they’d forgotten it! Awful decor, awful surroundings, terrible service, nobody seemed to know what they were doing.

Extremely disappointing! From when we arrived until the moment we left. And yes we were offered discount by way of free deserts but that didn't go any way towards making up for the negative experience of the family for this 70th birthday celebration. Out of date facebook information, which is where you're directed by the website to view the nonexistent menu. But after some scrolling you can find some old incorrect Sunday roast prices. Choice of three meats for the plated roast which is the only option on a Sunday. Choices made, dinner arrives. It goes from bad to worse. Inch thick, almost raw and cold discs of carrot accompanied by several other cold veg hiding under the tough slithers of meat and completely hollow Yorkshire puds. And God forbid you require more than the issued drizzle of gravy as it's an extra £2.50! Which brings me to the children's roast... For £2 less you get almost a slice of meat, 1 roast potato, half a roast parsnip, two small pieces of cold hard brocoli, one inch in diameter stuffing ball and 4 thick hard chunks of carrot. No red cabbage, no sweede. That's right! All for the £6.99 children's menu price!! And despite it only being a plated roast as the option and the tables being less than a third full, they couldn't bring all 11 out to be eaten together! And asking for condiments was painful. Surely salt and pepper could have been already on the table? Onto desert, the menus were a joke. And once the orders were placed we were steadily informed over a period of 25 minutes of things that we had ordered that had since sold out. Eventually nearly all of us were slowly presented with some form of desert that vaguely resembeled what was ordered. In fact one of the sticky toffee sponges was described as.... Hot! As that was the only descriptive word they could find! And one person was left without a desert at all. The blame for this entire incompetence and disappointing experience was placed, by the manager, at the feet of the new 14year old and the two previous managers that walked out in December! We certainly wouldn't recommend and will not be returning!

We came across Betty's by chance and had low expectations of this miss-matched collection of buildings. It proved to be architecturally dubious and a bit of a production line, however it is very popular, the staff friendly and hardworking with food that was varied, good quality, decent sized portions and tasty. Good quality control and great prices. You can see why it is popular with older couples and young families.

Such a great carvery Didn’t think it would be much having looked at reviews! We arrived and yes the pub is definitely in need of some TLC. Very old and worn looking. We were asking if we wanted a small medium or large carvery which we ordered at the bar with 2 pints of coke. All paid for before your taken to the table. Different way to do things but I really liked it as you sit, eat and leave when your ready not having to hang around to pay! The chef was friendly chatty and very professional. Asked what meat choice we wanted and service up a good potion of meat for a medium order. The meat was fabulous, tasty and of a good quality. There was a large selection of vegetable dishes on offer and Yorkshire’s which were home made. The vegetables were very tasty and cooked all so full of flavour! Really can’t fault the food or service and for £17 we had 2 carvery’s and 2 pints of Coke which I feel is a bargain!!

Ok so i am going to give you my honest opinion of my experience. Fully understand everyone’s experience is different but here goes. I was so looking forward to eating here whilst on holiday, I had seen some mixed reviews but thought hey I will give it a go. The staff are friendly, but the pub has the certain smell that reminds me back to when the clubs and pubs had to stop Smoking (2007) and then it left that certain smell in the air without the cigarette smoke to cover it. Fly issue, but to be honest that is to be expected in the area we are in, just not great when you are fighting to keep your meal fly free. The quality of the meal was also way under my expectations. Cod had 5 big bones in it before we gave upAttempting to eat the meal, chicken had lots of fat, kids chicken meal had big lumps of fat also and the steak was full of gristle. Ale tasted off, wine was fine though. Did mention our issues to the young lady and gentlemen who said they would pass on feedback to chef but basically pay up. No clear line of management to discuss issues with. 4 half eaten meals at the very best and that was ok to them, it was only me mentioning the issue rather than the usual how was your meal standard question. I will not return, appreciate it suits some, but as I said at the start I am just giving my honest opinion of my experience.

Delightful ❣️The only downside is the place needs a cosmetic makeover. Saying that I would come again when in the area definitely.

This place is big! and social distancing was very easy given the space we had. Our orders were taken and our warm, tasty food arrived in good time.We had the pie, jerk chicken and a burger all went down well. Tasty deserts and one last drink. The menu was reasonable in size given covid19 it was more extensive than other places we have stopped since being allowed to move around again. Good one way system in place to try and keep people apart.Good location just outside Oakhampton and a good size car park and beer garden to the rear.

Haven’t been to Betty Cottles in a very long time and knowing they have had change of ownership since our last visit we would give it try.On arrival, there is nothing inviting I.e staff attitude or atmosphere. Drink order taken and decided to sit outside.....poor decision. Surely they could’ve cut the grass and made it a whole lot more inviting......Food ordered......starter arrived within about 20 mins.......subsequently, main course arrived another 45 mins later. Overall quality of the food was just satisfactory......Jamaican Burger had no representation of Jamaica at all.Lastly, table service really not great.....it is fair to say she was either new or not really interested in her work.Whilst I want to support local businesses, surely as a business you want to be supported......invest time and enthusiasm and customers will come back. We thought we’d give this ‘eat out to help out’ scheme ago for my daughters birthday. So on arrival you could see that they were short staffed. We were seated very quickly and were told someone would be along to take our drinks order. After 20 minutes we decide to go to the bar to order a drink but were told that someone would come to us. The very unenthusiastic server took our drinks order. We asked for a non-alcoholic ginger beer but were told there was only a spiced ginger beer. When the drinks finally turned up we ended up with a flat ginger ALE not beer. After we placed the food order we waited for 1.5 hours for our food to turn up. After we chased our order up. When the food turned up we had order 3 medium-rare steaks. Each one turned up cooked differently. We had a well done, medium and medium rare. We order 2x peppercorn sauce and a blue cheese sauce. Each portion of sauce was a different size. 1 peppercorn and blue cheese sauce were over half full jugs and the other peppercorn was well under 1/4 full. The birthday child’s meal turned up and she was unimpressed by the dry chicken strips, cheap baked beans and anaemic chips. She was left unimpressed by it she left over half of her meal. And on the whole had a really disappointing birthday meal experience. I know you get some money off for the ‘eat out help out’ scheme but surely you should get the same dining experience as any other time.

Have updated my review as had more time to reflect. The experience was very disappointing, the pub was clearly unprepared for the number of covers but should have capped it so they were not overrun.Food service was very slow but were warned about that, still it took 2hrs for the final mains to arrive and by then we couldn’t eat them as the kids had filled themselves up on chips and onion rings during the wait.Tables were dirty, the couple of inexperienced youngsters were clearly worked off their feet and so service was really impacted. We kept having to ask for basics like cutlery, did not get napkins and by the time the sauces arrived most mains were finished. On the food, half of what we originally wanted was no longer available but we did not find out at the start to took several order changes through the evening. Calamari was really bad I honestly have never had ones this bad. Tiny (think 10p and 20p coin) pieces, overcooked and dry, served without any sauce or lemon.Crustacean burger was just a broken patty between two buns, no sauce or salad so was just very plain and dry, could have been so much better.Fish cakes, only half eaten as very dry, possibly under the heat lamp for too long.Steak pie was better, nice chunks of meat but had just a small scoop of mash which was not that great.Fries were nice and onion rings were ok.Overall very disappointing and felt sorry for the young staff who were overwhelmed and seemed to be dealing with numerous complaints from other tables.

Utterly shambolic visit, which is disappointing after I was able to leave such a good review last year, following a couple of poor meals prior to that, which we put down to teething problems and new management. Sadly this visit will be our last as we were so unimpressed. We arrived at 7.05pm as booked, seated by 7.10 and food ordered by 7.20We live in okehampton and want to support local business. Recent reviews have been more positive than in the past, so far so good. Then it went downhill. At 8.15pm as we sat there with empty glasses, we asked the barman who took our order where our food was as it had been a long time since ordering. We had ordered two mains, no starters. It wasnt exceptionally busy, but no food seemed to be coming out of the kitchen. We asked the barman who went to check in the kitchen, and returned to say the chef had told him it would be ready in six minutes. 25 minutes later we still had no food. Unacceptable. We appreciated not being charged for our drink, but we wont bother trying here again as the place itself is so unkempt and in need of a good deep clean. Something which you would think could have been done during the three month lock down. Soap and hot water and basic general maintainance isnt expensive .Skirting boards hanging off the wall, filthy windows and grotty ceilings, overgrown untidy beer garden and paths that need weeding. Such a shame as this is in a lovely location, and could be a fantastic pub. Im sure the manager will be checking her cctv to make sure I have my timings correct and I can assure her I have. I also have photos of the aforementioned dirt and broken skirting.

Well where do I begin with this place...This place use to have atmosphere and was busy and meals were amazing. As I haven’t been here for awhile I suggested to my sister that we go there for a meal to celebrate my upcoming wedding after covid19 put it back. When we arrived the waitress showed us to the table and was polite (but didn’t take any details for the track and trace system) which when told her before we left she took some details. I suffer with extreme anaphylaxis and extreme asthma so to not have that in place lacked confidence for me about catching covid19 etc. When sat down we ordered drinks and food together and the drinks for the other party were flat so was changed by using a can for them which was fine. The waitress then came over with a toy car for my nephew to play in (in a previous review written by my fiancée, Clare the manager tried to say that he took the toy without permission this in fact is not true and maybe check the CCTV before you make an accusation like that,..my fiancée is a member of the police force and wouldn’t lie on that last review especially when 4 of us there to back it all up)We had our starters which wearnt that great and I started to feel miserable especially as after our starters we waited over 40 minutes with no main meal coming out and watching people wondering the kitchen wiping their noses etc over their clothes which is disgusting. (2 teenagers, a pot wash, the baby, the male co-owner, the chef who kept coming out the of the kitchen and a guy who came out of the kitchen with the guy with the baby) I have a weakened immune system so to watch kids doing that happily around the kitchen was enough to say I don’t want to eat here especially after waiting nearly 2 hours for food. Don’t even think about saying ‘maybe with a weakened immune system you shouldn’t be out’ as my response will be you should have put in place the government guidelines to prevent the spread of covid19 and plus elderly can go out and eat now without shielding. We didn’t want to wait any longer for a food so paid up for starters and drinks and then leftClaire had written a response to the last review from my fiancée in which she had threatened with Saying she will be asking trip advisor for his details so he can pay up the bill as they threw the food away for no valid reason...this is pathetic and a breach GDPR so no way are you allowed Claire to even ask trip advisor for those details as they wouldn’t be allowed to give them to you.The next thing that has really annoyed me is that Claire mentioned my nephew with what he was doing. Trying to justify that her kid is better than ours. She tried to say that he was touching everything and my sister had no control over him which is lies and also to say about the toy car. The toy car was given to him so don’t even try to make assumptions again watch back you’d CCTV. Right next thing how dare you say that my nephew was constantly going near other people when we were on our own???!!! Wow you really don’t hold back do you? I have seen other reviews you have responded to and my god no wonder no one wants to come back.

Went with family to have a meal to celebrate getting engaged and wow this place put a downer on what was a good day. We arrived at seven as our booking was made for. First entry was dull and gloomy. We were then seated in the bar area which was also dull and gloomy. We were sat for twenty minutes before someone came to take a drinks order. She did apologise and explained she was the only member of staff on which we understood. She was very polite for the whole time we were there. To save waiting we ordered food at the same time as our drinks. Our drinks came and the two cokes were flat. The girl serving apologised and swapped them over. We then proceeded to wait over an hour for our starters. When they arrived they were luke warm at best but tasted okay. We then waited over half an hour for our mains which never materialised. This wouldn't be too bad however whilst sat waiting we all kept witnessing non-staff people walking around in the kitchen. There were two teen boys in tracksuit bottoms and tops, one who was wiping his face on his top. There was also a man holding a baby in the kitchen too and leaning on the sides. Everyone was acting as though this is perfectly normal however with covid19 there was zero efforts to maintain social distancing or any levels of hygiene. Ultimately after all we witnessed we paid up for what we had and left. If the mood doesn't kill you there then the food will!

We have often considered having a meal here and decided that tonight would be a good time to give it a go.We were given a friendly welcome and shown to our table in a conservatory area. The restaurant was clean and well laid out. This restaurant provides a very calm, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere that we enjoyed very much. Oh and very important..no noisy muzak! The menu is very varied and worth while spending your time to select something really tasty.Initial service was promising with the usual first drinks. However, although the restaurant wasn’t very busy, service was quite slow, necessitating us seeking out the waitress for service to order our meals. The food was without doubt excellent and arrived in good time. Unfortunately there was a lack of attention to detail in service. At no time during our stay were we asked whether we were happy with our food.We would have liked a coffee after our meal but after a long wait when no one came to clear our table or give us the opportunity to request the bill we decided not to bother with the coffees and paid at the bar.As I said the food and general atmosphere was very good. Stopped here as a last minute change of plan. There wasn't enough staff and some in our group had to wait over an hour for food. When it did finally come out it was of a poor standard or incorrect. Some ordered the cheese scone which arrived without any cheese. The waitress said the cheese was in the scone! Then another arrived for someone else with cheese, she had requested a scone with butter and jam! The sandwiches that we all had were made with sliced supermarket bread and the pickle in my cheese sandwich was very unpleasant. A jacket potato with chilli arrived again after an hours wait and it was swimming in a watery liquid again very poor. The staff did their best and we were a large group on a bank holiday but the establishment has to provide better food and employ more staff. I was also put of by the ambience inside. I felt it all needed updating and there was a musty smell probably coming from the old carpets. Such a shame and I do hope the owners can turn it around.

I went here for my birthday and frankly it’s not worth coming here. Made for a sad, long birthday. We got a table within 5 minutes and got drinks fairly quickly. We then waited for 40 minutes to order and had to go over and get a waiter to actually take our order despite it not being busy in the slightest. The food then took 40 minutes to come and frankly looked a bit lacklustre. There was no scampi which is what I wanted originally but they came over and said they didn’t have any scampi or fish today or even fish fingers for the children’s meal. Given we made it known we’re pressed for time, I’m not impressed at all. What a disappointment.

This was the first time I had visited this pub which is 8 miles from our home, we decided with some friends to give it a go. We booked our table the same day. On arrival we were greeted at the bar the staff were young but friendly. We were impressed by the gin selection and chose a drink. There was a problem with ice and someone had to go and find some, this took a while. I couldn’t use the gin promo for a double for £6 as the gin I chose didn’t have a replacement bottle, this also happened for the next drink I had so the measure had to be poured back into the bottle so I could pick one that had enough in it. No stock control or planning. The gins were not served with the relevant garnish to the type of gin it was lemon or nothing.

After a hard weeks graft my husband and I thought we would treat ourselves to a steak.....on steak night at Betty Cottles. The whole experience was upsetting form start to finish. We waited half an hour for our order to be taken, 2 simple steaks....on steak night..... after another 50 minutes the wrong steak came for one of us and the other was well done when I asked for rare. Also with the wrong sauce! The people on the next table had waited 2 hours from ordering to getting their food, the waiter told them that the order had been put in the till by mistake? There were 12 customers at the tables and they were told the kitchen couldn’t cope as everyone came at once (untrue) I sent back my steak as it was also cold, the other one was also over cooked but my husband picked at the chips. Another steak came, a sirloin, when I had ordered rump, I asked the young waiter to stay by the table when I cut it, it too was over cooked, not a glimpse of red meat inside. At this point I was hungry, tired, fed up and ready to go. I went to the bar (where the owner was stood behind) I explained to the barman/waiter that I would pay for the drinks, that should have been included with the steak meal deal, but I would not be paying for the meals as they were totally unacceptable.......something I have never done before. So he charged me for the drinks, surprisingly, the owner never said a word during this. I paid and we went to another local pub which stopped cooking at 9pm, it was 8.55 when we ordered and at 9.15 an amazing steak arrived at the table which was cooked to perfection. Imagine my surprise when the 3 people that had been on the other table at Betty Cottles who had travelled 300 miles to come down on holiday, came through the door to book a meal (on my recommendation) for the next day! I worry about the authenticity of some of the reviews.

Arrived without booking at 1.30 on a busy Sunday but we were still greeted with a smile. In fact all the staff were very pleasant and helpful despite the pub being extremely busy. The queue for the carvery was long but well worth the wait. Lovely perfectly cooked meat, a wide choice of fresh veg and very good gravy. My only two criticisms would be, the server on the carvery should have her long hair tied up, and preferably in a hair net, not just in a pony tail, and home made Yorkshire puds would be better than frozen bought in. Overall excellent though and we will definitely return. Price was also very good value for money.

I visited this pub as I was struggling for somewhere to eat whilst down in Devon on business. The inside of the pub itself is clean, light and airy. I ordered fish and chips along with a glass of red wine. The food arrived and I was very disappointed with the triangular shaped bit of fish on my plate. I was hoping that by being close to the coast that the fish would be outstanding. Instead I was faced with something resembling a Birds Eye fish portion. It was nicely cooked but not what I was expecting. I would call in again for a drink but would find somewhere else to eat!

We were staying so decided to try the restaurant. The food was delicicious. They were doing an offer that was advertised on Facebook - two steaks and two drinks for £20. The steaks were done to perfection. I even managed an amazing pudding. They had a school in that was competing in the Ten tors but that didn't affect anything, the service was impeccable. We sat in the bar area after and played chess. Thanks

We stayed at Betty Cottles Inn, part of this pub restaurant. We booked dinner, bed & breakfast. Dinner was excellent , we had steaks which were cooked beautifully, portions were good and desert was also lovely. The staff could not have been more attentive and helpful. Bar area lovely with wood burner. Room was a little dated but comfy, noticed they had some nice looking wooden chalets too. Breakfast was nice, hubby a bit disappointed only one bacon and sausage, but freshly cooked and good coffee. Lovely overnight stay.

After a lovely day on the moors we stopped off here for an evening meal - big mistake! We were met by a young man on arrival who showed us to a table and said he'd be back in a few minutes for our drinks order. We never saw him again. After 15-20 minutes I went to the bar, ordered the drinks and told them we were ready to order food. A waitress then arrived at our table and took our order (salmon fillet with potatoes and mediterranean vegetables for my wife and liver and bacon for me. When it arrived my wife's meal looked and tasted extremely bland, the salmon appeared to have been microwaved and the mediterranean vegetables turned out to be a few bits of onion and green pepper. Really? My liver and bacon, whilst ok was served on a dirty plate, with black marks on the rim. When we complained about the poor service, food quality and cleanliness when we got the bill we were offered a free coffee, which we refused as we just wanted to go and not return. All in all a very poor end to what had been a good day and a restaurant definitely not to be recommended

We have often driven past here on visits to friends in Okehampton but had never gone in. We are glad we did! This is a lovely place, the staff are so friendly and the food is delicious. We all had something different to eat, Hunters chicken, Signature Burger, Sea Bass and Stilton Chicken, you could tell the food was cooked from fresh and it was all cooked perfectly, everything was tasty and the portions were good. The service was friendly and efficient and the view from the garden was lovely as we sat outside with our drinks afterwards. We will definately be back and will be highly recommending to everyone we know !

We've been looking for a carvery in our area for some time now and came across this lovely little inn the other day. Just been for our first carvery and we will certainly be going back. Large £8.95 for 3 meats and loads of choice of veg - I couldn't fit all of it on my plate. Option of medium and small for the smaller eaters for less money. Everything was explained by the staff who were all friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Going back to try the normal menu as that looks very good as well.

On arrival we were rudely told we were too early, (only by 15 minutes) asked to vacate bar area (plenty of room) as we were in the way?! Surely if a paying customer arrives early for bar refreshments this should be encouraged?! Shoved into a different area and we were more in other customers way from adjoining restaurant and in direct pathway of hot food traffic from the kitchen not ideal with children who were then criticised for playing with pool table balls incase they rip the pool table as it’s expensive to replace! My partner was then allowed to go and purchase drinks, this took 20 minutes and the staff behind the bar seemed very unhappy, inexperienced and out of their depth and it wasn’t overly busy. We were kept waiting longer than agreed time, no apologies, our agreed eating time was over an hour late! We were told we could go to our eating area but our table wasn’t ready and staff were attempting to reorganise the dining area making us feel like we were in the way, lots of huffing and moaning from staff as lots of other customers were patiently waiting alongside side us too for their tables. I’d rather of waited a bit longer than being made to feel an inconvenience. It was a bit manic for a bit as lots of staff rushing around trying to ensure the servery was well stocked, however the chosen path for carrying the hot food was not very safe and was putting customers and staff at risk of injuries! The food was very nice, a varied selection and finally a friendly smiling staff member to assist on the servery. Dessert took a while to appear as staff took orders but didn’t have a clue which tables had which so you had to put your hand up if it was yours, this resulting lots of customers tables not enjoying their desserts together. We ordered a coffee at the bar which after half an hour, I had to go and find it, the barmaid had forgotten it but no apology. On leaving I overhead a discussion at the bar regarding how busy it was and how people had turned up early, very negative talk! I know some customers were airing their frustrations directly to them earlier but not once did myself or my family, we accepted the situation and tried to enjoy ourselves despite the situation but I find it very unprofessional and disheartening to see this, I know it’s not acceptable for customers to be rude but it works both ways, and accept the criticism, it’s constructive, don’t be so defensive, and if you need to debrief and have a moan with your staff at the end, wait until you’ve no customers in earshot.

As usual the food was delicious, between us we had cod, sea bass, hunters chicken and liver and bacon, all cooked to perfection and very tasty. My meal the vegetables were undercooked and the potatoes overcooked. The risotto cakes were bland and didn't taste nice at all. We both had a glass of coke it tasted horrible and was warm and not cold. My partner didn't like his burger meal either. It was meals you could cook at home but would be much better. We expected more and better from a restaurant. Also the service is terrible they had a new girl who had got everything wrong for another table and her customer service wasn't great. She was awful. She made so many mistakes it was just embarrassing and terrible. If she's new she should have someone constantly with her but she was constantly left on her own. Obviously no training in anything has been given to her.

Ate here tonight, would not return, told my main course unavailable as the other diners in my party were served theirs, my replacement took 50 minutes to come out, unacceptable given it was a basic scampi and fries, our plates were never cleared up, we weren't asked if we'd like dessert, other diners were returning food and complaining, the chef appeared to be arguing with the waiting staff, no atmosphere, no background music, final straw was the inability of the staff to provide a printed itemised receipt, this place needs new management to turn it around, go elsewhere in the meantime!

As with the accommodation the service and food at Betty Cottles is excellent, the staff are very friendly and do what they can to please and ensure everything is right, it is a busy place but the staff get round to everyone still in good time and the food is served in good time allowing the fact it is cooked from fresh it wouldn't matter if it took a little longer as it is worth it. If you get a nice day sit in the beer garden to eat as it is lovely and there is a new childrens play area for those with children. We are new to Okehampton and have a lot of family and friends here, we will be back and definitely recommend to others.

having spent many visits to this restaurant was looking forward to going back on monday 20th august. When we arrived the bar was unmanned and we had to wait for 10 mins before someone turned up.Then the woman in front of us asked for a clean glass as hers had lipstick on(alarm bell). Then proceeded to wait while others in front were served, only to be totally ignored when it was our turn, even having the lady behind the bar walk off.So we left the place not buying drinks or ordering any food. Will not be going back and will no longer recommend to friends or family.

We stayed at Meldon Lodges (through the back of the car park). We were a large party of 7 and went to Betty Cottles most evenings during our week long stay. We found the staff and their regulars friendly and helpful. We recently took our family visiting from the US to enjoy famous cream tea, hoping for a delightful experience but turned out to be quite the opposite. Firstly, the scones: They were crumbly and stale, tasting terrible. Far from satisfactory. Secondly, the price: We were charged a ridiculous £8.00 for one medium-sized scone with a little jam. The cream, although provided in substantial quantity, was not fresh either. This pricing for such low-quality food felt like a rip-off. To top it off, the iced latte with caramel tasted like iced water with a hint of sugar syrup. It lacked any real coffee flavour or latte or and was disappointing.
