Lovely restaurant. Good ambiance, helpful, courteous staff and excellent food. I would happily have eaten anything on the menu. The belly pork was delicious, complimented by sweet potatoes, red cabbage purée (unusual but perfect with the pork) and a delicious coleslaw, perfectly balanced. Desserts were also excellent, thank you we shall be back to sample Sunday lunch

We parked at the village hall, put the car on charge (Pod Point), and took a short walk through Stanton St John to the Talkhouse. The village walk was delightful – a picturesque stroll past charming thatched cottages, made even better by the beautiful autumn day. We started our visit with drinks in the garden, which was a nice spot to enjoy the sunshine. The menu offered several vegan options, which was a pleasant surprise, and we found the service prompt and friendly throughout. The atmosphere was great, and the staff added to the welcoming feel of the place. Prices were reasonable, and there’s plenty of parking available at the pub itself if you prefer to park closer. All in all, a lovely experience – highly recommended!

Recommended to us by friends, and just off the M40 and less than five miles from Oxford, we stopped for lunch in this quaint traditional English country pub. Service was impeccable . . . welcoming, unobtrusive yet responsive (Ashley not only talked us through the menu, but also offered suggestions on places of interest in Oxford, Stratford and around the Cotswolds. All dishes were fresh, tasty and attractively presented; and the seabass was simply scrumptious. Good selection of wines and cask ales. All very reasonably priced. Ample free parking. We'll be back!

Stopped off for Sunday Roast and this looked perfect. It wasn't busy so that was a bonus. We both ordered the Pork belly roast which although didn't even come with crackling and was obviously a child's portion, was nice. However the Roast potatoes were not very good and even had a hint of spice (curry) on them. The vegetables was a poor show and again tasted like they were drained from a curry. Thank god we had a £5 saucer of cauliflower that saved the veg. All in all a poor Sunday Roast. I think we had Yorkshire pudds on the plate. Then the bill came and I was horrified that they had added 12.5% service charge. It was optional but it makes your feel guilty if you take it off. The actual service was good it was just the food that was appalling. It was overpriced and not value for money. I only wish that I had not paid the service charge. If they cant pay their staff properly then the staff shouldn't work there. I would avoid this place as there are a lot of other lovely looking places around.

We stayed here for two nights while exploring Oxford (parking at Thornhill and bussing in) and Blenheim. We celebrated water pressure, hot water, room-based thermostats—all in an old thatched-roof inn. Our dinner was really nice, and bar service impeccable in a firendly pub. Ask for room 4 if you want to sleep before the pub does. Breakfast is either late (10am) or continental. To bump brekfast up a notch, we would suggest exploring mini quiches, in-room microwaves, yoghurt, and ditching the wheatabix. Beds are comfy, but could be a scoach bigger.

Family visit & ordered 3 roast dinners. The vegetables in a terracotta bowl that accompanied these would have only just fed 2 people, so definitely not the 3 of us! I had to ask for more veg & was told that there would be a charge for this. Really I replied, we ordered 3 roast dinners & there’s only just enough vegetables for 2 people. The waitress returned with a very small bowl that contained a few vegetables in it & said this is as much as I can give you without charging you extra. Within a few minutes the table of 2 next to us had the same sized terracotta bowl of veg put on their table proving my point that we had only been given a 2 person portion. After waiting for ages to pay the bill while the staff were just chatting behind the bar I made way to them to explain that I wouldn’t be paying the 12.5% service charge added to the bill, nothing was said in response and in-fact I should really have asked for a reduction in the bill. Won’t be returning, much better service can be found nearby!!

This is a lovely pub probably 1600's is oldest part up to 1990's for newest. The pub itself is well furnished and looks great. Food was nice too. Accessible toilet was small but just enough room and well stocked.

We stayed for one evening as we were visiting Oxford. As the manager of the pub has now taken down their page on the Air bnb website, my review can’t be seen anymore. They are trying to delete my review so I thought it would be good to post on here just to make sure that people who are thinking of going, know not to. Day of check in we got to our room dumped our bags and rushed out as we were late so we didn’t get an opportunity to look at the room in detail we had time to see the bed was made that was pretty much it then left, noticed the room looked a bit tired but not awful. We then got back at midnight to sleep. We got into bed to find there were bodily fluids on the sheets and makeup on the pillow cases. I really didn’t want to have to stay but because it was midnight it was too late to find somewhere else to stay. We couldn’t find a member of staff around to help us as the pub was locked and shut. So I took pictures of the bed that evening ready to send in the morning in the hopes of getting a part refund as I thought this was fair. I then noticed really how bad the bathroom was in the morning and took photos. The bath matt was scrunched in the corner of the bathroom next to the loo, toothpaste on towel rail, mouldy windows, dirty shower, limescale everywhere. I think you can see for yourselves that it’s not clean. The response I got was that it was my fault I “didn’t tell anyone so they could fix the issue”.. how could I at midnight with no one around 😂 ?! I sent pictures before the end of checkout the next morning. No apology, it was just my fault and that was it no accountability. He then went on to ignore me. He went on to write me a review saying that i “threatened” and “blackmailed” him for saying I wanted some money back or I would leave a bad review. I thought that I was giving him an opportunity to fix the issue. I am an AirBnB host I know exactly how things should be kept and this wasn’t even close to that standard. Don’t stay or eat here, really rude, absolutely terrible customer service. Never received a refund from them personally, AirBnB gave me £20 back…

My wife and I called in here on the off chance and way back from an excellent day out in Oxford. We originally intended to only have drinks, but we loved the welcome and ambience of this quaint and very old pub with it's real fire, that we decided to stay for a quick dinner in the bar area. This 300 year-old+ tavern has been sympathetically extended to the side to include a long and quite cosy restaurant. Beer selection was good (I had the London Pride and my wife had a decent Rose wine) and we shared the beef cheeseburger main meal with a cheesy chips upgrade. The portion was large enough for us two cut in half and the beef had a tasty, home-made quality. The chips were large cut and triple-cooked and were good quality. For £17 (London prices) I think it could include a small green side-salad to improve the value and presentation on the plate. Katie the manager was very friendly and attentive and the service was good. We will be back to try a Sunday lunch (with walk) and to see how good that is nowadays.

A number of old workmates meet regularly a number of times throughout the year and The Talkhouse is ideal. We generally meet at lunchtime during the week and have a convivial meal. The food is always great and there is a good choice. The staff are always friendly, helpful and nothing seems too much trouble. Like everything these days prices have risen but it’s still very reasonable as quality doesn’t come cheap. Definitely to be recommended.

Went for lunch last Sunday with my family and generally, we were all a little disappointed. Service was very slow throughout and needed to ask for our order to be taken for some drinks, then again for the food, then again to pay the bill after being presented with it. Those of us who had a roast (3) all commented that the food was warm at best. However, my biggest issue is with the prices versus portion size, or more to the point, the portion size of the meat. I had roast turkey, which was £18. I haven't got an issue with the £18 cost, as everywhere has needed to increase prices to survive. What I do have an issue with is being charged £18 for 2 very small, very thin slices of turkey. I would usually expect roast turkey to include stuffing & pigs in blankets, but if you wanted these they were £5 & £6 respectively......which would bring the roast turkey meal to £29!! TBH, I would have been happy with just a fair size portion of turkey meat. The other guests all felt the same about the portion sizes of the main ingredient, with the exception of fish & chips. Even the burgers were very small!! If you're going to charge these prices, you really need to look at your value for money offer and your service speed. Especially if you're going to automatically wack on 12.5% service charge.

Big group dinner after a meeting so not a test of the à la carte menu. Coped well thought the waitress allowed the mask and smile to slip from time to time when trying to herd cats and get a consensus especially towards the end of the evening. Food was good pub standard and service was crisp despite the numbers. Wide variety of choices even for big group and everyone was happy with their options. Burger was great and the steaks seemed palatable. Starters were decent size and deemed tasty and desserts standard British pub fare with minor twists. Would eat there again when in the area.

Stayed at the pub on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th October 2023. All seemed well when we checked in and the room, number 1, was very nice and comfortable. We were asked if we were having breakfast on the Sunday morning to which we said yes and filled out a form. Cost £12.50 each which isn't cheap. Breakfast was served at 10:00 which is very late compared to many other places. The breakfast was very poor. The scrambled eggs were very dry and bitty like saw dust, the bacon was like leather and the fried eggs overdone, hard, burnt a little round the edges with bubbles in the whites. Expected much better for a premium price. My partner couldn't eat the scrambled eggs and bacon and complained. She asked if she could have another sausage to which the reply was there weren't any left! There was only one other table occupied in the room with 4 or 5 people!!!!. We were told that a refund couldn't be given as there was no management about! We had decided to get breakfast on the Monday elsewhere which was a good job as the pub was closed and didn't open until 12:00 which we weren't warned of on the Saturday. Also a good job that we weren't looking to eat there on the Sunday evening as the pub closed at 17:00. again something we weren't advised of. Luckily there is a separate access to the rooms behind the pub but it would have been nice to have been told about the closure times. We thought we would provide feedback at checkout on the Monday morning but yes, you've guessed it, the pub was closed and no one in sight. Re the room, there was a very annoying clicking, tapping noise coming from the bathroom pipes that kept us awake. Most frustrating that all of this could not be voiced to any management. A Messenger text was sent to them about our experience when we still there to which we received a generic automated response which included making a reservation for food lol! We have still not received a proper reply today Thursday 12th October. The pub looks very nice inside and out but the owners/management clearly have no interest in being accessible. This is very poorly run and we would not recommend it to anyone. Can see it going out of business very soon.

Lovely dog friendly pub, great location and plenty of parking. We went for a Sunday lunch but were disappointed, the beef did not appear to have been cooked/carved on site - each piece seemed identical ( was it just re-heated?), it was cut too thickly and as a consequence some members of the group were unable to cut, or eat, most of it. The roasties were not good - surely one of the easiest things to cook, also vegetables arrived so long after mains that many people had virtually finished. Swede was mashed and tasted OK-ish, but was unrecognisable as it was a brownish colour - several people asked what it was. The soup for starters was not eaten by anyone who ordered it - when returned the waitress did say it was an “acquired taste” so why oh why was it on the menu for a Sunday lunch …..??? This place has so much potential and the team are very helpful and pleasant - it just fails to deliver for some reason - a little more effort and it could be as good as it used to be. If you want to get people in please do a really good home made Sunday lunch, decent locally produced meat, and a good roastie should be a given - there is a fabulous farm shop literally a few seconds up the road - surely locally supplied seasonal fruit and vegetables should be showcased. One other thing you could do is offer a selection of alcohol free spirits - not everyone is a fan if Seedlip (i am) currently Waitrose are doing a Tanquery Zero on offer - may be worth a trip there!

Pros: Lovely welcome, dog friendly, very informative about local eateries (pub closed Sunday evenings), nice modern room with comfy bed and huge walk in shower. Cons: Room faces on to a seated courtyard area and there are no blinds at the window to ensure privacy. Have to close the curtains and put on a (very dim) light. The walls are very thin and you can hear EVERYTHING from the neighbouring rooms! Need more plug sockets around the mirror area, and the desk under the TV. Not much storage space; a hanging rail is provided (attached to the wall), but do mind your head as it is situated next to the bed. No mattress or pillow protectors in use.

Mark and his staff laid on a lovely Sunday lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. Great food, reasonably priced. Even in 'Covid times' the pub felt very safe as cleanliness and social distancing were clearly a priority.

An excellent venue. We were able to book the whole dinning room for a finger buffet for 25. The room was very spacious and comfortable. The food was delicious. The staff were very attentive. The manager was very happy for us to move some tables and chairs around - so that we could lay the room out as we wanted it ie to have free tables against the wall in order to have photo albums, books and photo boards on display. We celebrated my mother’s life In style - with champagne!

Absolutely no ambience. Completely lacking in any front of house staff, service just to get drinks was a real effort. Bar manager very rude, interrupting conversation to talk about some inconsequential crap to the only 1 member of staff that was polite and helpful with a personality. Been coming to the talkhouse for 20 years, will not be coming back.

As someone who has visited The Talk House for over 20 years, I have seen it degenerate from a destination gastro-pub to an establishment selling pimped-up school dinners. Never in all my visits have I been so disappointed at the quality of the cuisine. The ambience remains lovely, the wines were glorious but I doubt I’ll be eating there again without some convincing. I appreciate the pub is under new management and it should be given time but seriously, they need to find a decent chef and improve on front of house service too.

Friendly, chatty staff who always serve you quickly and efficiently augment your experience in this atmospheric rural pub. It is a wooden beamed traditional stone pub with what appear to be a number of extensions so it is easy to get a table - we booked in advance but needn't have done so. We were there for Day of the Dead - the evening was Mexican themed with fajitas, nachos and churros. There is a good beer selection including the local Prospect and also London Pride (this is a Fullers house) and also an extensive wine list. Extensive parking over the road. The club's unusual name appears to be related to the red telephone box next to it which also features on the unusual 3D inn sign. Would definitely go back again...maybe for lunch instead.

Held our family reception here following a funeral at the nearby Oxford Crematorium. Staff were so nice and welcoming, laid on a great buffet (no problem with providing gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan etc) and were happy for us to take our own time. They ran a bar tab for the guests, and provided plenty of coffee for the "NDs"

Really nice warm individual atmosphere. Food was great and just what we needed before a long day the following. We overnight-ed in room 3 which had everything needed. I Managed to run an international meeting at 0600 so wifi was strong. Breakfast next day was really good and ready when we asked for it. Highly recommend The Fat Fox if you want to dodge the corporate bs and feel like a name not a number.

Back at last shame it was Shaun and Gemma’s night off. Very quiet Wednesday but we were late arrivals. Made welcome, choice of seating, nice to see pichets of wine on the drinks menu. Had tariiflette which was spot on and a good price as well. Made us feel guilty we don’t go here more often! Oh and they accept cash!

We decided on Sunday morning to try the Red Lion for lunch, and booked a table for 1330. We arrived and were met by efficient staff who were expecting us and offered us a choice of table. Drinks were ordered from a knowledgeable waiter and arrived quickly, mine being a very well-kept pint from tge local Amwell Springs brewery. We both chose beef from an extremely well thought-out menu which again arrived after only a short wait. The meat was beautifully cooked and presented on a large plate with very well cooked greens, carrots and a freshly-made Yorkshire puddings. Sides of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were excellent, probably the best roasties I've had, and the horseradish was similarly delicious. We both cleared our plates and the side dishes. Utterly gorgeous, go and see for yourself.
