Nice enough pub to sit in or out of in the garden, but service incredibly slow - 45mins for our food to arrive, and when it did hardly generous (and on the verge of stingy) for the price - £26 for a maybe 200g steak, chips and I think 3 lettuce leaves and a single(!) slice of radish and one sliver of onion (of course, no dressing). Drinks also over priced, and still had the cheek to add 12.5% service. A single ladies toilet that was in a state. Will not be returning.

An absolute corker of a place with friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff, a good range of drinks and fantastic food (Gurnard was on the menu and that deserved 5 stars). I didn't give the food 5 stars simply because the Serrano ham and manchego croquettes I had didn't have enough of either in them in my opinion (I worked in Madrid, so am used to the 'croquettas de Serrano being full of the meat).. The bechamel sauce could have done with being cooked out for another couple of minutes. There was the briefest hint of flour on the mid-palate. This is a mere quibble

Arrived here 8:30 pm on a Friday. We wanted meals for four. We were told a large group had just arrived but they could take our order in 15 minutes. Had a drink whilst waiting and gave our order at the bar. There was a slight mix up with one of the meals (mine!). Manager came over and appologised then sorted it out. The food was really good and the staff friendly and efficient. Felt very relaxed and unrushed. Next time we are in the area we would certainly go again. Pleasant evening and good food.

The last couple of times we had food here we found it had gone downhill, from a stodgy burger to a charcuterie board offering poor variety, and thus not worth the price. Service at the bar was super friendly, our server forgot the sauces we asked for despite it being a relatively chill mid week evening. The space upstairs feels a bit less cosy now without the sofas but still pretty.

The Talbot had been recommended to us for Sunday roast lunch. Something must have changed, because boy was this a disappointment, and at some price. Things did not bode well with two chunks of sourdough which were average and borderline stale, and a dish of ok olives - £4.50 each! The roast beef plate looked fine, but the Yorkshire was dry as a biscuit. Vegetables al dente, but the beef tough and miserable to get through. The food was barely lukewarm, rather like the service. At no point did anyone ask how the lunch was... And so we left, disappointed, a bit depressed, never to return.

Ordered the fish which was over cooked and a bit burned. It came on top of a soggy mix of potato and spinach. Didn’t enjoy it much- nor did I enjoy the filthy glasses and cutlery. About two hours after I got home I started getting stomach cramps then was sick all night. A truly ghastly experience and I will of course never return. These guys need to have a proper clean up and sort their hygiene out. I was really very unwell.

Been coming for years just for the roast. 2nd time now the roast has not been to its usual standards. Pork belly and Beef both different to what it used to be. The beef was bland and dry and pork belly soggy and a different cut. Also all trimmings lacked in seasoning and worst past the gravy was very watery. The only good thing that they have changed in the pub recently is additional seatings which you wont struggle to get a table.

Bad roast. I’ve been coming to the talbot for years for a roast and it’s always been consistently brilliant. I went recently under what seems new management/chef and the roast was awful. Average roast with surprisingly expensive non alcoholic drinks (£4 for a pint of lime and soda? £1 more would have got me a beer…). Roast was luke warm and no one came to check on us (seated upstairs) - if they had I would’ve asked for it to have been microwaved. Pub itself wasn’t very warm with several people sat in coats and scarves. Atmosphere upstairs was completely taken over by a rowdy table screaming. Maybe downstairs on a non-Sunday roast day would be better.

The prices here are shocking, so we were expecting something superb. Unfortunately, it is in no way that. The wait staff and bartenders all seemed grumpy. Maybe they all had a rough night, but the service was not great. And the food was very hit or miss. The tomato salad was lovely, but the chicken burger was dry and tasteless and the chips were from Iceland. Others at our table said the steak was awful. Maybe this place was great in 2020, but our seems to have since gone downhill under new ownership. You’ll find better value elsewhere.

Awful. We attended the pub as it seemed rather inviting. However the amount of rules inside is overbearing. You was not aloud to stand ok the balcony, also not able to speak to the table across as they would shut the balcony..but then reopened to different customers. We could not bring 4 donuts in a sealed package for a birthday party. The only saving grace is the beautiful blond human who served us drinks with there skills. All in all would not recommend for celebration of any kind.

Rules, rules, rules. The atmosphere is overbearing with the tyrannical terms and conditions of attempting to spent time with your friends. They advertise an outside terrace, of which you cannot stand on. Dare you talk to a near by table, to run the risk of closing the terrace. To then be opened again 20 mins later. Other rules include no queuing for the toilet, no empty cups, no waiting outside, dare you hold a door open for someone out of common courtesy. Apparently the food is good but will not be returning to find out. One bar member was nice though.

I’m suggesting a 4* purely because I don’t feel the need to downgrade a pub that I have always known to be a great find with great food - so here’s the but.. Rushed service because friends have a baby, a quiet non crying one, because the license says we can’t have him there after 8pm - we deal with that. A food item was wrong but it looked and then tasted delicious so we didn’t care. We were the only ones in the restaurant area btw, but if it’s about licensing then I get it But then to stand outside talking quietly, away from the tables so they didn’t feel they had to be sensitive about a baby, with no one around, we’re told to clear the area as there could be people that might want to walk on the path and we’d be in their way. Uuurgh. What should have been a lovely quick catch-up with lovely friends became a disappointing night with too many rules. What a shame.

Never been to a pub with so many rules as to where one can stand. Went to a pretty easy going party where we hired the upstairs. First, kept getting told off for being too many people on the balcony because the ceiling downstairs would collapse... I mean, if that's a possibility, your pub should be closed for renovations, for a start. Then they closed the balcony and we weren't allowed to finish our ciggy because the bouncer couldn't wait around all day - reminder that we are paying customers. Sitting outside the front was even more of a nightmare. Constantly being asked to be quiet - it wasn't even 10pm and we were just chatting. A pub where you're not allowed to talk. At The Talbot, you're only allowed to stand up next to some tables. The bouncers and the staff all clearly hate their jobs and constantly berate you for just chatting with your mates, especially when you're not standing in the right corner of the outside area. At one point there was a huge, loud announcement to say "I'm not pointing fingers but can we all keep this stop using this door and use the other door" as if we are children who use the wrong door to upset the relentless adults. Why can't we use that door, absolutely no idea, just follow the rules of The Talbot; a pub with two doors, only one useable. I honestly think we were interrupted with rules and asked to move more than 15 times in about 4 hours. Out of nowhere, someone comes out and screams, "everyone you have 2 minutes to get inside otherwise you won't be getting in!". Doesn't matter that we all had fresh pints. Seems like the loud voices rule goes out the window to allow staff to scream at paying customers. Begrudgingly, we went inside, stood near the bar and some unbareably unhappy member of staff says "If you wouldn't mind moving over to the corner to finish your drinks". The guy screaming for last orders thinks he's a laugh but he's just getting in the way of everyone enjoying a nice evening with their mates. This pub honestly sucks the joy out of a Saturday night. I hope the staff reflect on their approach.

I came here with my family on the weekend and I cannot fault the place! We had such amazing service not only at our table but also at the bar, the staff were so kind and attentive, it was such a great atmosphere and you could tell that the staff genuinely enjoyed working there which shows in their service. The food was SOOO delicious, I had the chicken pie and was told that they're made in house! This was hands down, the best pie I have ever had! Everyone else on the table thoroughly enjoyed their meals as well. The vibe of the pub itself is so good, the location is great, right on the canal with a picturesque view, it's a great place for a meal or just to stop by for a drink. I would really recommend this spot to everyone! Thanks guys for making our visit so memorable, we will be back!

The cocktails and service were amazing however, the lack of dishes on the menu were disappointing.
