comment_iconOpinions

Mixed satisfaction ratings. Our starters were fine served with lovely warm crusty bread. However - from there it went downhill. My meal of fish and chips was awful - it appeared to be a large fish. But I soon found that the batter covering the fish was far too thick and uncooked making it wet and soggy and definitely not appetising. How can an English restaurant not make decent fish and chips?! Waitress was lovely and doing her best - my complaint about my dish fortunately resulted in it being deducted from the bill. However - the whole experience ruined what should have been a lovely meal out with a relative. We were out to celebrate his recent recovery from surgery - but his meal of lasagne was also a big disappointment. The restaurant seems to specialise in roast dinners - maybe we should have chosen one of those.

The Swan has always been my go-to restaurant with family and friends for good quality meals, service and venue, until last night 23 March 24. At 7.40 pm I checked in the bar for a pre-booked 8 pm restaurant table, for myself and two friends. We ordered a drink and sat at a table, displaying a reserved notice, the only seat available. 8.15pm I enquired when our table would be available, to be told that was our table. I had booked a table in the restaurant, not the bar. The three of us were then escorted to an unattractive huge 15 seat table, resembling a wallpaper paste table. We expressed our disappointment to staff members and departed for home. Not one person offered an apology or concern for our disappointment. There were a couple of unoccupied small tables requiring a wipe and cutlery in the restaurant at that time. I will be reluctant to recommend the Swan in future

My family treated me to my 81st Birthday lunch at the Swan Hotel - all 11 of us. The Restaurant we were in was bright, well set out without tables being crammed together. The food was excellent, really well cooked and plenty of it from a nice varied menu. A little delay in getting our desserts was apologised for by the staff, but gave us a bit of time for our first course to go down. But when it came it was well worth waiting for, really delicious. The staff were excellent thoughout and we all agreed we really enjoyed it and would come again.

Went for OAP lunch, £9 for two courses very good value for money. Good choice of different starters, mains and desserts and food was of pretty good quality and portion sizes not too big which is perfect for OAPs. We eat in the main bar which was fine and had a reasonable atmosphere. Service by a young lady was quick and efficient. All in all an excellent lunch.

Stayed at the Swan while walking the Cotswold Way. Really appreciated the huge room at the very top of the building -- zippy bright green accents and wonderful rooftop views. Lots of space for rinsing out and re-packing gear. Nice refurbished bathroom. WiFi didn't really reach the room and the rest of the hotel/bar/restaurant was a bit odd -- maybe in transition/being renovated? But decent breakfast and good price

We came here for the Steak night on Thursday and although it very busy and food did take longer than we would expect, the food was good, a couple of the steak was slightly more well done than we would have preferred but the value for money was great, even better that your drink was included in the cost of the food. We did have an issue where 1 of the food orders was left out and got missed so this ended up in someone waiting for quite a while and we had finished by this point but the staff dealt with this well. I would defiantly recommend for a local dinning restaurant and I am looking forward to returning for another themed night soon.

We used to come here fairly regularly for food when we were Gourmet Club members because we got two-for-one mains. At the time, the food was quite average and only seemed like decent value when you got one of your meals for free. We stopped going when our GC membership expired. Then recently we went on a longish walk and intended to go to the Oak for lunch, but their kitchen was closed, so we (quite reluctantly) went to the Swan instead. It was great! I had the pie and mash and it was really, really nice. I even recommended it to some people who were coming in as we were leaving. They did the place up a while ago and it looks and feels a lot cleaner and brighter, but still has a lovely old country feel to it. The staff were great and I was particularly impressed with how they dealt with the dreadful mess that an obnoxious family had left behind. Big thumbs up, good work Swan!

We arrived at 1 for lunch there were only 5 of us, as our other guests were running late we decided to sit in the bar as usually they have the fire going & it's a bit more relaxed. Unfortunately today they didn't & it bloody freezing in all areas of the pub, we did expect the fire to be roaring as it was equally cold outside. All of us sat with our coats on, customers who were sat at the bar for a while didn't take off their coats or hats. We had asked twice for the fire to be lit but it never happened. It wasn't very rushed, 1 table in the snug area, maybe 1 or 2 in the restaurant & then us in the bar, we felt that they were understaffed & grumpy both girls had no real personality & the staff of a hotel really make your stay! The food was good but nothing to rave about. When we finished our meals we pushed the plates to the end of the table, the girls came back & forth into the bar area carrying a tray neither of them picked the plates up & on one occasion the younger bar tender had noticed we were finished from behind the bar she wasn't serving anyone as no one was at the bar she stood there & didn't collect them until 15 minutes later. It was a real shame as we had said about this place to our family members who were looking forward to spending the afternoon here.

We popped in here after an afternoon walk, mostly because they allowed dogs. It's a really nicely decorated place, with country pub charm but not the clutter that some of these places have. There was a lovely log fire going which was great too.menu is pretty extensive, we just went for a few snacks, which were ordered and served promptly. The pork belly tapas which apparently was very good, a tuna mayo jacket which again was good, and I went for the olive, oil & bread board and chips. It would have been nice to have a labelled vegan option, and I see from another review that they do cater for vegans, but we just popped in on a whim so didn't really have time to organise in advance. The chips are actually skinny fries, which was disappointing, but they were still nice and very crisp and fresh. The olive board was also good, although the bread it was served with was just sliced brown bred. It was good quality bread but still an odd choice to serve with olives and oils. Usually you get a crispy ciabatta or something. Additionally the olives didn't come with cocktail sticks so I had to use my fork which risked olives pinging across the table. These are only little problems and I'm sure if I'd have asked they would have helped but it wasn't really enough of an issue for me to justify kicking up a fussAlso a bit disappointed that there was only Thatchers cider on offer. A local cider would have been nice.Overall though I'm glad we chose this pub and we had a nice meal.Lovely decor, atmosphere, and feel. Good reasonably priced food. And doggy friendly.I'd recommend popping in on a cold afternoon!

Visited on Sat 3/9 around 6:45. We were the 2nd table occupied in the restaurant so it was empty. We wandered in after looking at the menu as it reads really well. Good selection of drinks, very lovely looking restaurant. Quiet as only another family dining which is fine, lacked an atmosphere which a bit of music in the background would have been nice. Hubby ordered pie of the day with chips and this should have come with "Chefs Gravy" so the pie arrived with a massive pile of chips and veg. I think a smaller amount of homemade chips may have been much nicer than the mound of frozen chips but hey ho that's fine and he ate them all as men do! His gravy was missing so we asked for it. The waitress said you don't get gravy as the pie has a sauce. This is fair enough but it says on the menu it comes with a pan of bubbling chefs gravy. Anyway the waitress came back with the gravy and said the chef said white pie (chicken) doesn't have gravy but here you go. The "chefs" gravy was clearly bisto or a similar instant gravy. It tasted of it, it had undissolved lumps in and dissapointing. I ordered the tapas. On the menu this reads well. I was advised to order 3 items. I went for fish fingers, greasy but nice, scotch eggs nice and a decent portion. And the trio of chips, I excepted homemade because why would anyone want a trio of chips that wasn't tasty home made ones? For £6??? So there was sweets potato ones, normal frozen chips then the same covered in cheese but they were all stuck together and the cheese was so hard they came out in one lump. I showed the waitress as I'd not eaten any and she just said oh! And we said about the gravy and we were told she would say to the chef. Anyway she came back and said nothing and when we were given our bill no apologies made and we also were overcharged for our 3 for £12 tapas so had to go back and question that. The staff were friendly but just didn't offer an apology or any way of making the meal better for us. So we didn't have any more drinks and left it at that!

Took my mother and partner here for food for the first time and we were disgusted with the service and the food. Firstly it took 15 minutes for anyone to take our order then our drinks were drop all over the table. After waiting another 40 minutes for our food to arrive the manager dropped a potion of chips over my partner, which he cleared up. My mother order the pulled pork burger which was completely raw, and made us feel sick. After getting attitude from the waitress as I sent the burger back our experience there just got worse. My chips were not even cooked which I sent back and ordered for chips which were actually cooked. My this time we were all fed up and were just put off by the food. When I asked for the bill I was shocked that they expected us to pay £42 for the meal. I requested to speak to the manager as I refused to pay full price, which her response was to go get the chef. When he arrived he gave me attitude and said the only thing he will take off the bill was my mothers food. The whole experience was shocking. Also being allergic to cats I was shocked to see they had a cat in the restaurant walking on tables and sitting on the customers chairs. This is meant to be a restaurant not an animal sanctuary. So to some up we will never return to the swan hotel again.

Went here again but this time for an evening meal. My previous experience was that the service was slow, however, this time it had significantly improved. The food was excellent and we will definitely return.I certainly would recommend.

A rather rambling place with separate bar and restaurant areas - the fire in the bar was very welcoming and we chose to eat there rather than in the restaurant itself. The menu was quite extensive and the food well presented - reasonably priced too, although the service was a little slow on the day we visited. Accommodation is also available.

We visited the restaurant on the 13th November at lunchtime. It was fairly busy but not full. The service was friendly and we were given 2 menus, both related to the Senior Citizens special The food was excellent value, however, the time taken to get 2 courses was 2 hours. Not sure as to why it took so long..... It was the only negative aspect.I would recommend to eat here and will give it another try.

Just walked in and found this delightful little pub empty.......we were a bit worried as it was right on lunch time. We did think it must be pretty poor but we had committed ourselves! Lucky we stayed it was marvellous. We had the best "Bangers and Mash" ever! Good value for money . The one girl did everything and she did it with a smile! Very pleasant lunch.

I am a coeliac. My friend and I first reviewed the menu online to ensure a gluten free option. When we arrived the website menu was not an option. We then asked for the gluten free menu. The staff were unsure of what menu was available. We then ordered explaining to the server that it was a strictly gluten free choice. The starter arrived....I double checked if the bread on the platter was gluten free, the server didn't know and took it away. He then appeared and said it wasn't! !! Thank god I didn't eat it. I offered the bread I bought with me but then my starter was returned with the hotels GF bread....which was stale. The main arrived...lamb shank. The meat was tender but the gravy was so overly sweet we could not eat it. I must say we are NOT fussy eaters. These comments were passed on to the staff but just apologies offered. Disappointing. ..I live in Wotton under Edge and would not return. However on a positive...the decor and hotel is beautiful.

We visited this restaurant 4 times during our holiday in the Cotswolds. Our meals were varied, as there is a very good selection. In all instances they were of large portions & displayed well. The staff were friendly, courteous, & always confirmed what you had ordered. It was well patronised in all visits, which is also an indication of its popular appeal.

Chanced upon this place, one of those random drives and thought we would eat here. We thought how novel...British Tapas....so we went for it. Huge portions and most likely over ordered having 5 choices. But thoroughly enjoyable well cooked food at a very reasonable price. Service was fantastic.

Perhaps my title is a little unfair but we called in here on our way back to our hotel near Bristol, having spent the day at Westonbirt Arboretum. We asked if they had space for two and lots of very young staff were panicking because six other people had just arrived. They eventually showed us to a seat in a completely empty restaurant. The setting was great; the food was delicious and the service was very friendly. More friendly than efficient. We had to wait a long time to order and between courses and each time a differnet young person came to wait on us.It all seemed a little chaotic but quite amusing in a very pleasant atmosphere.

It has been a while since I last ate at the Swan. Previously, the menu seemed to be a confused array of pub classics and pub takes on other cuisines. The new menu, with its "British Tapas" concept is far more cohesive. Also available were a number of other main dishes and gourmet burgers which most of our party opted for. Although not in the Heston definition of gourmet (perhaps a good thing?); they were well flavoured, juicy and well presented and the chips were also good. Deserts were also good. Service throughout was attentive and thoughtful, and staff were very accommodating of our two young children. All in all, a very pleasant evening.

As those of you who like to read my reviews know I try to be accurate and fair to both the business and the consumer. Those who write extreme reviews normally have a grievance that goes beyond the factual and enters into the fairy tale, particularly the wicked witch, whereas positive criticism can be helpful. The reason we chose to go to the Swan at Wotton-Under-Edge were some of the more extreme reviews that so clearly jarred with the complementary ones, and thus entered the the land of the fairy tale. We were also taken with the very reasonable reply of the owner David H. So I had better be careful what I write?First the positive: the food is absolutely delicious and nicely presented. The Thai fishcake was absolutely delicious as were the locally produced faggots (an odd combination my wife told me). The chef needs to be praised for his/her work. The staff were very pleasant and attentive and the decor of the restaurant very restful. It is interesting that those sitting on the built in wall seating were up high whereas those on individual seating had their chin very near the table. Mine included - no chance of dribbling onto my clothing, says he jokingly. Our daughter-in-law is a senior lecturer and departmental manager in a college training those entering into the hotel/restaurant business. Before that she had a lot of experience in the management of restaurants, and what she does not know about front of house staff is not worth knowing (all forms of waiting - including wine waiters - and receptionists etc.).Second the slight negatives - The waitresses were very pleasant and lovely although clearly untrained, hence the title of 'Rustic'. There is no wine menu, even though the hotel and restaurant has been under the present management for 4.5 years, it is under review we were told, but they do proved bottles of wine for the table. The wine was not brought to the table unopened, which is the professional way of doing it. The fact that the bottle had a screw top is immaterial. We asked for a jug of water. When the waitress brought the four glasses for the water she brought them canteen style with her fingers in the top of the glasses rather that bringing the water and glasses on a tray. Health and hygiene! Now her hands appeared to be clean (and I am sure they were), but what had she been handling before putting her fingers in the glasses which we were to bring water from - we did not say anything at the time but the staff should be made aware of the basics of waiting on table and the matter of hygienic handling of all things for the customer. For those reading this review, please do not be put off by the slight negatives. We four had a very pleasant evening and really enjoyed the meal. Would I recommend the hotel restaurant, most definitely especially with the local staff who just need a bit of training. Certainly they are intelligent enough and pleasant enough to be worth investing a bit of time and money to enable them to do an even better job. To the management: please, next time can you prepare a wine menu and present the menu in a nice folder rather than the sheet and that wooden clip board with typed out menus? It would elevate your lovely restaurant to a higher level with very little effort.Life is not easy for such establishments in the current trading conditions and they need to be supported. After all they provide work for local people and they are good for the local economy. So thank you 'The Swan Hotel' for a very pleasant evening. Long may you improve and prosper.Wednesday April 8th 2015

Visited today for mothers day. Menu was restricted due to mothers day menu, so chose the roast with beef came with 2 Yorkshire puddings and these were burnt, I asked for no vegetables as don't eat them so it came with 2 roast potatoes and 2 new potatoes, downside was the plate was swimming in red wine gravy which I don't like wish I could of had the option of pourin the gravy as I would not of had any. It was a 2 course meal so had jam roly poly and custard one slice arrived with small jug of custard. I did wonder where the rest was. I was still hungry seeing as though i had been at work for 8 hours and disappointed at 15.50 a head.

This is a local favourite and a regular for dinner out when friends and family come to visit. The staff are friendly and the food is good quality, reliable and tasty. There are a number of menus for the bar, the restaurant and for deals which are on throughout the week. So plenty to choose from!I'd recommend the Swan to anyone passing through, visiting or holidaying in the area for a friendly place to eat with a small, but well looked after, selection of local beers available.

Very nice ambiance, welcoming staff, freshly decorated and comfy new chairs. Although it was not busy, it took quite a while for the 6 of us to be served (no starters) but for us no issue. The Sunday roasts were delicious, very large platefuls, unusual but satisfying Yorkshires, heaps of meat, lots of very nicely cooked fresh veg.We were very full but nevertheless ordered 3 desserts and 6 spoons, and they too were most sufficient and again delicious, and very well presented. Our only points of criticism were that the roast potatoes and Yorkshires seemed to be reheats rather than fresh, but this is being fussy. We would definitely go back again. Good food, great value. We are proud of our local establishment!

Went to The Swan Hotel On the off chance they were serving food. On arrival, I was pleased to see that food was being served and I had a choice of sitting in the restaurant, bar or a cosy little room. Decided to try the cosy little room with some strange music playing and ordered the Hunter's Chicken from the menu. The food arrived quickly and there was enough there for at least two people. The cost of the food was cheaper than expected and would recommend to anyone that wants to go for a family meal.

I know old buildings sometimes have funny layouts, but when we walked in and there's a staircase and a pile of newspapers in front of you, we didn't know whether to go left or right. Right took us to an empty dining room so we went back and found the bar. We asked at the bar if it was ok to eat and we were directed back to the dining area where we were quickly served with well cooked and tasty food. It was empty so I can't say alot for the atmosphere (it was a weekday lunch) but we will certainly return

Last Saturday we had a pre Cinema meal in the Swan - we chose to eat in the pub bar as its full of character (and Characters!). My Chcken Kiev, chips and salad was just great..on a previous visit the chicken was very dry and lacking in garlic butter filling so l mentioned this to the waitress and the Chef produced a brilliantly moist one for me. But its the chips that we really raved about, so much so that l told everyone who would listen..they are REAL chips, not frozen pre-baked things..when l showed my doubts at this claim l was invited into the kitchen to see for myself!Husband's steak was good but as with all steaks, needed to be slightly thicker to get full marks. My only gripe with eating in the Bar is that most tables are now coffee table height, so not good for eating a meal at - for your indigestion! But there are other places to eat in besides the Bar.The Swan has had an up and down reputation, but it seems to be on a high now as far as food is concerned..give it a try if you want REAL chips and good home cooked food.

The Wotton Therapist Group meet monthly at The Swan for a lunchtime business/support get together. We have also held functions there such as "Me-Time" evenings when members of the public were able to trial various therapies that we have to offer locally. One month we had a cream tea, which was edible but not what we expected. We were all impressed today that the atmosphere was pleasant and the food was very good. I had the broccoli and Stilton soup, which was served in an unusual way with a square of Stilton in the middle - it was presented well with lovely home made bread and was very tasty. All the meals were well presented and the other therapists made positive comments. To up my rating to 5 points it would be good if soya milk was available for my pot of tea.I would now have no qualms about recommending the bar and restaurant to people for meals.

I went for an early evening meal with my husband and friends on Friday 20th September. We were impressed by the friendliness of the staff and presentation of the food. Me and my husband have tried this venue a few times in the past, and until now each time we tried a meal vowed not to return. I am pleased to say that we very much enjoyed the food and the atmosphere this time, and will be back. The food was good, not too filling. The vegetarian options for starter and main courses were inventive and tasty, though perhaps there could have been one or two more choices for us veggies, and labelling of vegetarian options for all courses to avoid me having to ask the waiters each time. There was a bit of a wait between starter and main course, but we did not mind as we were enjoying a relaxed meal. Early days for new staff, and I am sure it will improve for people who want to be served quicker.I have appreciated the effort that The Swan have put into updating the environment and am glad that they now also have a good chef.I'm looking forward to more good meals and relaxed social evenings at The Swan.

We have just come back from a 2 night stay at the Amberley Inn. What a lovely stay we had we were greeted and looked after by Skye as we arrived, and on the first night in the bar and restaurant, all other staff were equally attentive. Delicious 3 course meal with wine, Perfect breakfast in the morning served by Jennifer who looked after a busy breakfast room wonderfully, nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff this day too. We went to a wedding on the second night. But had another great breakfast on our last day. Rooms were lovely and clean, staff all amazing I just only took 2 names sorry to everyone else. I stumbled across The Edgemoor Inn whilst driving past and arrived with no expectations. From the moment that I walked through the door I was made to feel welcome. My table had magnificent views across the valley. There was a selection of drinks to suit most tastes: I thoroughly enjoyed a well kept pint of bitter from the local Uley brewery. The food was freshly prepared with care and attention to detail. Both starter and main were exceptionally good. The menu has a good selection of meat, fish, and vegetarian dishes. For me this has been the discovery of an unexpected gem. I will be back. Kevin
