My wife and I visited at lunchtime with the intention of having a couple of drinks and light lunch. We had a few drinks on the terrace and looked at the menu however it was just not appropriate for lunchtime dining. There were no sandwiches or lighter bites and to be honest I don’t know many people who would like to have an expensive lamb shank or a £150 (no typing error) turbot - midday and mid week. (I appreciate the fish must have been a sharing item but.....)We reluctantly phoned st Petroc’s and had a faultless and I mean faultless 2 course lunch for £17.All I can say is please tone it down a bit in the daytime and add realistic items on to your menu.We have been before and we will return but whether we done or not is up to you.

We found this pub towards the end of the lunchtime and the lady behind the bar gave us a warm welcome. Our starters were quickly served and were very good (prawn cocktail and mozzarella sticks); the mains followed soon after we had finished and were accompanied by a huge fresh salad. Generous sized portions and a good pub meal.

No podíamos terminar nuestras comidas. La cerveza era buena. Después de leer otras críticas sólo puedo asumir que el menú de noche y calidad es un mejor estándar. No volvería.

Having not been to the Mariners for an evening meal for a long time I now know why! Ordered the chilli as Chas Andrews makes a great one. We were told that there wasn't any, okay we chose a sizzler chicken & steak cooked medium to well with a pepper sauce. The meals arrived, the sauce was like water so sent them back, when cutting into the steak I'm sure it mooed! I don't mind pink but blood, not for me. Asked for them to be cooked a bit more, when they returned our steaks had been put on the wrong platters as we had both cut them before sending back, and had been microwaved! There was no way we could eat this disgusting meal. I asked the staff to see the chef "Trevor" & was told "if we can find him, he's probably gone". When Trevor came out there was no apology & told us he had put our steaks in the oven, really? Oh yes a microwave oven! Seriously Chas you need to sort this out as your chef is doing you no favours. The Mariners food was always great but never again!

We recently moved to berekley and had my son and his wife come to visit so we decided to try this place as it was within walking distance. It was very cheap but the food tasted like it, I even had a a dish from the board and that wasn't great even though I paid full price for it and not the 2 for a tenner as my Son and his wife did. Service was good but I won't be returning.

Decided to go out with the family for an evening meal. We ordered drinks and were a little concerned about the loud group of customers swearing and not very nice. Other customers chose to eat in the small area of the pub and expressed their thoughts about the foul language too. While we waited for our meal to arrive a black cat was running across the tables, the bar and chairs For a pub that does not let dogs in, we found this disgusting, at least dogs don't walk over tables! When our meal arrived it was as always very good, I did speak to the bar person as our evening was ruined with the profanities being shouted, the comment was I am too small to speak to them.

Our friend who is local had booked the 3 of us in for lunch today, as she has had some nice meals here. We were seated in the back room and it was quite busy. A bit of a slow start though as I had to go back up to the bar to get our drinks and order our food as nobody had come over to us.But what food it was! It came quite quickly and we each had something different. My beef, with an excellent Yorkshire pud, was the tenderest and most tasty I've had in years. My partner loved her gammon and our friend really enjoyed her turkey. We had a generous tray of the usual vegetables. For puddings again we each had something different, all traditional, but I must single out my spotted dick with custard, a real treat.Service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere was welcoming. The prices were incredibly low and we all felt it was a memorable Sunday lunch. The Mariners dates from 1490 and had some ancient features and bags of character. It's well worth a visit.

Ate here today as there seemed to be good feedback. However, I was very disappointed that the beer battered fish was mainly batter and BONES, with only a teaspoonful of fish in it. Some of the bones were quite large and I never - in 50 yrs - have had more that 10% as many bones in a fish before.I politely told them about this but I didn't get the impression that they were concerned. The lady said it didn't say 'filleted' - but I said I had ordered fish n chips not bones n chips and, surely, they didn't want a customer to end up in hospital because a large bone had got caught in the throat. The lady seemed to think because they were selling 2 for £10, that this was reasonable, but I can assure you it is not. I had only intended to point this out to them, but the lack of care has given me no option but to give feedback online, concerning this matter.NB The signage is dilapadated. There is a confusion of signs - one saying fish for £3 another affectively, fish for £5. Toilet rolls not replaced in men's toilets.

The bar staff here seemed really friendly and happy to point out the specials, and 2 for 1 on some drinks. It seems to offer very good value for money, 2 t-bones for 25 pounds, and 2 rib-eye steaks for 20 pounds. The T-bones were great my husband really enjoyed his, and my son also.I however picked the short straw and had the rib-eye, we ordered 2 as my son and husband are quite greedy and happy to eat half a rib-eye each. The rib-eye was very very chewy, both Steaks were so chewy that i couldn't eat either, and my Husband and son also tried them and agreed we would need to take them home for the dogs to eat as too chewy for us to try and eat, we all had our steaks cooked medium rare and it was such a shame that the rib-eyes were a disappointment. The waitress didn't at any point ask how our meal was, but as she cleared the plates I did tell her about the Rib-eye steaks, That we couldn't eat them as were so chewy, But she was clearly not interested. It's a shame as we are local and would like to have been able to recommend this place to our guests.

what a lovely old english pub in the old tradition ! too many pubs are closing in the u.k and it is very hard to find a traditional pub these days .we live around about 5 miles away , and were out for a drive around the beautiful countryside where we are so fortunate to live . it was around lunchtime and we had seen this pub many times , but never popped in ! the sign outside told us 2 meals for £10 so we decided to give it a go ! we didn't expect too much for £10 ! .... but what a surprise !! there was a menu with sandwiches and steaks, home made hunters chicken pie etc ....and then the blackboard with the 2 for £10 offer specials.we went for beefburgers with cheese and bacon( on the blackboard ) for £10 expecting to get a small meal as in other establishments that we have encountered !not at all ! .....the plate was filled with lovely food ! burger ( i couldn't finish mine) chips -lovely and crispy ( not homemade -but still lovely) and a big salad ! we also saw the homemade pies that other people were ordering and they looked lovely and were massive !! i loved the laid back atmosphere and the staff were very helpful without being in your face !! well done ! definetly visit again ! on a post note ....i was really impressed that the young lady behind the bar told everyone that came through the door after 1.30 pm that lunch finishes at 2pm (- just to let you know so you aren't disappointed ! ) ....people turned up at 1.55pm and she went to check in the kitchen and they were served with their order ! excellent service , lovely food , gorgeous old england pub ! ..................also very near to berkeley castle ! englands oldest castle (so i believe ?)....and the scene of the murder of one of the early english kings !! we have been visiting the castle for many many years- and every year in august they have a bank holiday show on - and they have in past years had medieval jousts ! the castle is very medieval in parts and also very well worth a visit !
