I had dinner with friends on Friday evening at the Swan and the food was delicious. We had a selection of starters and I had the ox cheeck pie for my main. The staff were so friendly and nothing was ever too much of an ask. Would highly recommend anyone in the area visiting.

It's the food that is the disappointment here. I don't blame the chefs cooking it. Probably more the executive chef, the accountant and the management. This is a pub and you come for pub style portioning. At the same time, it's run / owned by the Thyme Hotel, so you expect a good level of presentation. The food we received though was extremely average on both fronts. If it wasn't for the main courses we'd be giving 2 stars. It was hard to tell if the chicken liver paté was homemade. You'll find better in a good supermarket. The peaches in another starter were crunchy and delivered no flavour through their rawness. My biggest disappointment was the most expensive of all the starters, the crab. Essentially, they spread the dressed (without chef seasoning intervention) crab mixture, pretty meanly, onto one slice of toast. There were 5 thin slices of pickled cucumber and some leaves. Overall, the plating was very drab. I know the trade. I know that you're not paying £12 for the base ingredients. I know all of the other costs. I know that we are paying for the experience and our desire to not want to do this at home. However, there's no excuse for laziness, meanness and a lack of desire for a guest to say 'that looks lovely' or 'that looks yummy'. The main courses were good though. Once again unfortunately, you can see the intervention of the accountant. I had the braised ox pie. Now, ox is one of the cheaper meats, but delicious. Whilst the sauce in the pie was fantastic (well done chefs) I had to ask for a spoon. Essentially the tiny morsels of tender (cheap) ox were swimming in the gravy. Would it really hurt the books so badly if the kitchen were allowed to add another 40g of meat. At least make the portion of mash bigger (which was bloody brilliant) to soak up the gravy. The aubergine main course I tried was rich, unctuous through the additional melding of tomatoes and spices. Absolutely beautiful at £20. I have real mixed feelings. I know it's the pub experience within the Thyme Hotel and village. However, it's also a pub that's open to outsiders, in a lovely Cotswolds village. I beg of the managers and accountants to know the economic value of a repeat visit or a recommendation over the rigidity of counting out grams of crab or meat on a scale. I guarantee you'll make more money if you deliver on the experience (which starts in the kitchen).

Staff friendly and polite, very helpful with recommendations, Robert is an asset to the pub. Food good; although small portions. Would have been a 3 star, due to the website menu showing food no longer being served and it was a dish on the website menu that I wanted. Then on arrival, the menu on the wall by the door had a replacement dish instead of the one i wanted. Only to be given a menu when seated which didn't have that one either.

We visited The Swan last year for lunch on our anniversary. The pub itself is absolutely gorgeous, and the food was amazing too! We ended up getting engaged that day, so my memory of the whole experience is very fond indeed. We planned to go back this year to celebrate our anniversary, and to celebrate one year engaged, but unfortunately on the day of our booking my partner woke up feeling unwell. This could not be foreseen, and we rang to cancel the booking as soon as we could - we cancelled our 1 pm booking at 9:45. The Swan has a cancellation policy that we were aware of, however, I was shocked to find that I was charged £50 for us not attending. We didn't go because we didn't want my partner to spread his germs to any other customers, however, maybe we shouldn't have been so courteous! £50 is a lot of money at the moment, given the cost of living crisis, and would have nearly covered our meal there. Given that the lady we spoke to at Thyme said it would be at The Swans "discretion" as to whether they charged us or not, this implied a choice on behalf of the restaurant, and the choice seems very unfair given the circumstances. We were also told the restaurant would be in touch to let us know if they were going to take the payment and yet we received no contact. Perhaps that was a miscommunication, however, my view of The Swan has now unfortunately been tarnished as a result, which is a real shame. Update: one of the members of the Thyme Group (who own The Swan) reached out and offered to return our £50 as credit upon our next visit to the pub. Today (25/05/24) we visited and enjoyed a lovely lunch of Bavette Steak. Our positive view of The Swan has been restored!

We went to The Swan for Sunday roast recently. We ordered three courses. The real issue was with the mains - one of us ordered a beef roast and, while some bits were fine/rare, some bits of the meat were just raw and inedible. The rest of the mains (veg), starters and desserts were average but I'd expect better given the price. It's nice on the inside although it was a bit dead when we were there (probably because we had a late lunch). Staff were friendly, and we did get a dessert thrown in for the raw beef - not sure if that's fair or not given the beef was almost untouched, but we appreciated the gesture. Overall, we probably won't come back. There are plenty of nice pubs in the area which do better food for the price paid. I hope things improve as it there's lots of potential.

We used to go here a lot and loved it but hadn’t been for a while. Local friends had advised us that the restaurant had slipped but we went anyway. What a disappointment. The restaurant was not even half full at 7pm on a weeknight during the Christmas break which should have told us all we needed to know when places like the lamb in Burford and the lamb at Crawley are (rightly) full to bursting. The portion sizes were tiny (4 stalks of broccoli is a portion apparently), they had run out of burgers and the main course fish dish was tiny, more like a starter portion. The vegan burger was also very small while the fillet steak was priced at £49 (we didn’t have that). We came home and had a bowl of cereal each because we were so hungry having had a three course meal (and no, we don’t have enormous insatiable appetites - we have never done this before - ever!). It is such a shame as this had been such a lovely place to go. Now it’s a rip off. I appreciate food prices have risen but portion sizes here are a fraction of those anywhere else. We left at 10am - the place was empty. The waitresses were lovely and the service was prompt but that’s not enough to bring us back, sadly.

We went for Sunday lunch at the Swan, a party of six. Really sad to have to write such a bad review of this pub, which I know was closed for a while and has only just reopened. But our experience was terrible. We ordered some veggie roasts, roast beef, and one of our party has a few dietary requirements (no soy, dairy or gluten - which we told the pub when the booking was made). Everything was fine until the food arrived. The veggie roasts (price £20) arrived as pictured - that is just a plate of veg without anything to accompany it. When I asked if there was a 'roast' to accompany the vegetables, I was told 'sorry, I forgot to tell you we ran out of veggie roasts'. Extraordinary to think someone thought we wouldn't have noticed the main event missing from our meal, or have thought that it was acceptable to simply provide a plate of veg without explanation. We sent them back and ordered again, but what followed was food that is less than good than what you'd get in Wetherspoons, at more than double the price. The member of our group with dietary requirements asked the waitress to check with the kitchen that she was able to eat what she ordered, but this didn't happen. The beef burger she ordered without the bun did come - but what arrived was just two beef patties and chips with no garnish or anything else, and no attempt whatsoever to make the dish presentable, or ask if she wanted anything else in lieu of what she couldn't eat. A real bargain at £16. The roast beef was actually very good, and that prevents this review getting 1 star. That was the saving grace but only one dish out of six ordered. The house ale was also excellent. I could go on but you probably get the picture. The pub has been redone and is very plush inside, and feels very 'gastro' (eg the traditional pub games room replete with skittles has gone and been replaced with more dining areas). If a place is trying to be a gastro pub with the prices to match, you'd expect good quality food. I'm afraid this really wasn't our experience. The staff did take off the service when requested but this didn't really make up for our very bad experience, and to be honest they didn't really seem that bothered. Really sad to have to write this as this could be a great pub, and is in a lovely village, which needs its local pub to be a thriving part of the community. But so much needs to improve.

The Swan was our favourite pub in the Cotswold, we have so many happy memories, we celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, shared lovely meal with friends, we really loved this place . We were delighted to know it had reopened and we went back to celebrate my birthday a few of weeks ago. It was a real disappointment . The refurb is unfortunately a bad attempt to modernise what once was a stunning rustic, cosy and traditional pub dining room. The room is now a bland beige naked space with some debatable art hanging on the walls. The food was never cheap at the Swan but, equally, we never walked away once thinking that we were overcharged. The food, the menu variety and the service all matched the price tag. Unfortunately this is not the case anymore. Food was okish, nothing as it used to be, a very limited menu and an average but yet expensive wine list. Service was good, the lady serving our table was sweet and attentive. It’s a shame they decided to swap a winning concept to offer a below average experience instead. I really hope they will soon realise it was a mistake and go back to their formal glory (and paint the walls in a darker colour😉) , then we might be back.

Beautiful setting, we had a private room for a table of 10. Food was largely very good, maybe just short of excellent - the competition in the Cotswolds is massive though. Great pints and service was also good. Lovely atmosphere in the front of the pub which is very traditional, and also a garden at the back for when it's warmer. Had the beef cheek, which was very good although preferred the look of the burger and the fish and chips which was a huge portion!

Whilst the ambiance was very pleasant, the Gin and Tonic I had, has to have been the most disgusting I've ever had. The Gin I noticed came out of a flowery bottle and the tonic - suposedly normal tonic - was of a name I've never heard of - TW marked on it. The drink was garnished with something which looked vaguely like s slice of orange. None of this would have mattered had it tasted like a G&T. I was expecting a familiar Gin such as Gordon's or whatever and a familiar tonic such as Fever Tree or at worst Schweppes! I feel conned and let down. I will not return of my own volition but unfortunately I'm sure I will be invited by others but I shall be much more careful about ordering something which sounds familiar. I wonder how they would destroy a Martini!

This used to be a firm favourite a few years ago, so I was looking forward to seeing it up and running again after a long period of being closed. Sadly it was disappointing. As with all the pubs in this area, you go expecting to pay close to £20 for a main course. But when you order a vegetarian pasta that arrives as a tiny portion, made with shop bought spaghetti and very few ingredients, it doesn't feel justified in the slightest.

We returned to The Swan for the first and as it turned the last since its reopening last night. We sat on a table of 6 and were left with only a jug of tap water for nearly 15mins without being asked if we wanted any drinks. The waitress came to take our food order and only then after asking, were drinks discussed. It appears they have 1 cider, 1 lager and 2 beers on tap. Make of that what you will. Food was ordered and after a normal wait, starters arrived. These were OK, French onion soup and soufflés. Main courses arrived in due course, burgers, chicken Kiev and vegan burgers. The vegan burgers were very much back to the old days of vegan burgers, no flavour and pretty uninspiring to look at One vegan burger bun was so hard it was inedible. This was communicated to the waitress who apologised and said that wasn't acceptable. Mains were finished and the bill requested. Perhaps I should of made more of a fuss as the bill arrived fully loaded with no reduction for the below par food and the full service charge included. Bill duly paid and we left. If this is the level at which The Swan wishes to run at, it will not be having many returning customers judging by other reviews and certainly not us

If you want a wonderful country pub or a restaurant atmosphere you will be sadly disappointed. The Swan definitely has an identity crisis. Garish décor and bad lighting makes it feel like a 1980s sitting room and the atmosphere is more of a cafe aspiring to be posh. (Think of an evening with Mrs Bucket). Fantastic fires though. Menu is short and uninspiring which was a shame but the food was good. Drinks choices are limited - a very basically stocked bar. Closes early - last drinks orders at 10.15 pm with the staff actively pushing us out of the door before 11 pm - Not what you want for a Saturday night supper with friends. According to the manager - "they are trying to do things differently". I am not sure who they are trying to please.

Arrived for lunch 10 minutes late and was criticised by the GM even though there is a 20 minute grace period. The Sunday roast menu was limited so we opted for the veggie roast which is essentially Yorkshire pudding and roast vegetables for £20. £6 off the meat option. It lacked flavour and substance. After an unfulfilling lunch we chose the apple crumble for dessert, the crumble had no bite and the apple was basically purée. Very disappointed after driving 50 mins for a Cotswolds lunch. The Bull at Langford is a far better choice. I will not be returning to The Swan. 2 stars as the decor was ok and our waitress was accommodating.

The food and drink is slightly more expensive than other pubs. The menu is original, served with local ingredients and more refined than any country pub I know in the area. Everything on the plate is well thought out and not just fussy food but high quality and tasty. I find the food is well seasoned and fresh. It is a place where posh people go and a bit pricy and for those reasons, people are overly harsh in their assessment. But where else in the cotswolds can you sip a 6GBP pint whilst admiring a supermodel and listening to a family argue whether their travels through Southeast Asia were superior to their travels through East Asia.

We visited at night but would love to go back in the day as the village of Southrop looked really lovely and we'd be excited to try other Thyme properties. Real bonus that they allow dogs in the restaurant at The Swan too :)

My family went for a meal here over the Christmas period. It is a very highly recommend place in this area so we were all expecting great food. The food was perfectly acceptable if you were paying £12-15 for a main but as the prices of our meals were £24-35 we were all quite disappointed with the standard of cooking. Everything was very bland, and lacked any real flavour or seasoning. The waitress was also inattentive and generally quite short with all of us. For a meal of that money we all expected far better. We won’t be coming back. Shame because my family came here 4/5 years ago and it was a stand out fantastic meal. I feel they are a little more style over substance now.

We live very near to this lovely pub/restaurant, but have never been there to eat. As a surprise my husband treated me before we set off for Christmas. To be honest there wasn't a huge amount of choice for a vegetarian so I ended up having two starters which were nicely average. It's a shame because the pub was lovely. Maybe November isn't a great time to sample a vast menu because it's quiet

It was nice, had a bit of a stuffy atmosphere to it, mostly due to the flavour of customers it appears to draw all dressed up as if they were at some fancy restaurant, not a pub, and that was a shame as the staff were great as was the food and drink. Not a cheap pub lunch but a quality one with a price tag to match!

My husband and I were staying in an air bnb next to this pub so decided to eat there one night. The restaurant had a lovely cozy feeling to it and he decor was nice. It wasn’t overly busy and the atmosphere was good. I ordered the beetroot risotto which I really enjoyed. I would also recommend the ice cream as well. My husband ordered the fish cakes, they were ok but nothing special. Portions are very small which is fine if you are not too hungry. The service was good and the waiters and waitresses were very attentive. This place has very mixed reviews but we liked it and would return.

We came as a big business group and were very well looked after. Lovely friendly staff who were polite and efficient. The food was truly excellent and the finest of English pub grub, served as sharing bowels and individual plates. To call the food pub grub is to understate the quality and taste which were of the highest order. Highly recommended!

Would highly recommend this pub. Lovely food, great environment, and the staff were delightful. Really welcoming. Also family friendly. And only place we found that served food during the afternoon! Everywhere locally seemed to close between 3 and 6, while this place had a good sized bar menu available all day as well as a kids menu - perfect.

Lovely old pub in a quintessential Cotswold village. Staff were welcoming and knowledgable as we ordered, telling us where various ingredients had come from. We started with a very good Scotch egg and followed with Sunday lunch. The locally grown roast beetroot was amazing. I think you need to book as it was very busy and most tables were reserved.

The food was adequate but nothing special. When I questioned why the chocolate mousse did not have any homemade honeycomb, the ingredient that would have made it unique, I was told they they did not have any and had reduced the price. Why I was not told when ordering is beyond me. We felt very rushed by the waitress.

Stopped off for lunch on a trip through to Wales and am so glad we did. Friendly welcome and shown to a pretty, shaded table in the sunny courtyard with a water bowl brought for our dog. Great scotch egg to share and then two minute steaks with a beautiful flower strewn salad and great fries. A perfect soda water and angustura bitters came with a real straw straw. Loved this. A carafe of red wine was just right. All in all a great stop off and I will definitely be back. The service was, btw, perfect.

It is unlike us to eat at the same place night after night but we ended up eating at The Swan for the entirety of our stay at Thyme. It has the perfect combination of comfort, yummy tasty fresh food (with great gluten free options), and good cocktails and wine selection. All at a good price. Recommend!

I went here with a friend who was making a repeat visit. The menu is very varied and the portion sizes fine. I can imagine if you like hearty food that people in some cases might find the portion small for a starter but for a two course meal that is fine.We parked outside and it was pouring with rain so I can't say what other parking was available. Our waitress brought a carafe of tap water without being asked which is a pleasant change

Difficult one to review this one, the place is in a fantastic setting, very comfortable inviting interior and we had a very good welcome. But the main thing you are there for is the food, this is where is gets a little negative and I agree with some of the previous reviews given. Food is actually good, but it is still a pub, and it must be said the prices are very expensive, and does not match the standards served. Service and staff were friendly and attentive, but value for more is certainly not there.

We visited jacks 2 days ago actually, impressed when they gave me a separate Free From menu (I’m lactose tolerant). Food came quickly, staff friendly. Really enjoyed it. Went back today and had a completely different experience sadly. We ordered similar meals but one was from the Free From menu minus hollandaise sauce. Guess what? Both came WITH hollandaise sauce. Foreign waitress clearly didn’t understand. Plate eventually removed and had to wait another 10 minutes while hubby started his food. Not impressed as he specifically said one from Dairy Free menu! They were clearly having a bad day as one couple left without having their coffees and they got another food order wrong.
