The Swallows Return in Worthing

Went at lunchtime, 13/03/2025 we pre booked we found the hosts very welcoming and was advised that they were exceptionally busy and would be a delay in preparing and serving food which was fine by us as we’re having a family catch up. We had crab cakes, fish cakes seared sea bass, and fish and chips all cooked to perfection and well worth the wait, they only had one draught beer on offer Ghost ship which wasn’t disappointing, on a previous visit we had steaks which were all cooked to perfection again there was a long delay in receiving our orders, all the staff were very pleasant and kept us informed and being dog friendly made it the perfect venue. Will definitely revisit in the near future.

Underwhelmed . We ordered from there weekend menu . Service was pedestrian .I ordered the belly pork , my wife chicken parm . Mine was pleasant , nice piece of pork , however everything served with it was bordering on cold . My wife’s chicken parm was dry and overcooked . Pudding’s my wife ordered a trio of chocolate that was already sold out , even though we sat down at 12:30 , I had sticky toffee pudding , that was a small thin square of unpleasant sponge with a thin custard . The bill was £70 with three diet pepsi’s . I didn’t offer a tip , the service didn’t justify it . It maybe popular , but at that price point id have expected better .

Our weekly treat. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Food is lovely and a mixed variety, good value for money. A big shout out to Lauren, Dexter, Mark & James, they all make you feel very welcome.

Visited for lunch. Nicely busy, which must reflect popularity.

Love this chain and as Swallows Return is closest to me, we may turn up every now and again. Sometimes just for coffee ☕, sometimes more.

I meet here regularly with a cancer support group, the pub staff are always so welcoming, when the fire is alight it's absolutely beautiful, lots of car parking, too.

This is my local. The food is really nice, not too pricey, and the building is nice. The main flaw is that they seem to be understaffed, so the bar and waiting staff seem overworked. As a result sometimes service is slow - we waited 40 mins for a drink order the other day, and had to refund because we needed to leave. If management is reading this, please get more waiting/bar staff! Other than that though, I think it's a lovely place, would recommend.

A great cosy atmosphere even on a cold day. Ii was there with family. My wife chose chicken salad, but the chicken was tough and unappetising. I had pie of the day. Very good pie but based in vegetables that had lost their first warmth.

The meals could have been hot instead of having to send it back and better service

Service can be a little slow at times. Have just changed the menu and is OK. The loyalty card is good for the discounts. Food is good but can be cold sometimes. A very busy place. Verynice staff and very helpful.

Sadly we waited 15 minutes to be seated despite having a table reserved. Once seated we waited an additional 10 minutes before our orders wete taken. Then our starters arrived 35 minutes later... very late and disappointing. Our waitress didn't seem too concerned once we complained. We did request, which was given, another bottle of wine to compensate for the delay to our food, which we appreciated. It would have been nice if the staff offered this rather than us asking. Food quality was good though. However overall, a disappointing experience.

Really lovely Sunday roast, with amazing staff and very dog friendly. I am a celiac and the lovely waitress was very informative about the menu and very helpful when it came to choosing our food. Lots of dogs in there who all seemed to love it too, our dog certainly did. We will definitely be going back. Thank you so much :)

AVOID. We booked to go here for my grandads special birthday there was 12 of us so I tried to ring up on 3 separate occasions and couldn't get through in the end I had to book via Facebook. Secondly, upon arrival I wanted to give his birthday cake to the waitress who seated us but she was VERY RUDE! We waited over an hour and a half for our food and when it finally came out it was all at different times, we all had roast dinners but there was only 2 dishes of vegetables for all of us (nowhere near enough to feed 12!) So we had to ask for more and my husband had asked for mustard which didn't come until he was eating the last few bites of his meal. WORST OF ALL we all got ILL from eating here - including my 2 toddlers! It wasn't even very busy when we were here so was very disappointed with the whole experience. When we tried go complain about becoming ill from the restaurant they make it so difficult to get in contact. WILL NOT RETURN AGAIN. :(

I met my friend here at one of my favourite places and as usual we had a lovely time. I had the pie which happened to be chicken on this day, not my usual choice but absolutely delicious! My friend had the sea bass and equally enjoyed it. The staff are always attentive and friendly. The venue is gorgeous, what more could you want.

Took my friend out for a birthday treat, where we had mushrooms in cheese sauce and the pate for starters, main course was lasagne and gammon, then for dessert Eton mess and lemon tart. It was all delicious, and the staff were all very friendly, would definitely go there again.

Quiz night, so busy, but food still good, service good (allowing for how busy), good atmosphere and a very enjoyable evening.

We went last night for the St Barnabas Quiz night, on spec, as my husband sadly died there last Friday. The manager fitted us in as we should have booked. The food, event and ambience was friendly and really helpful for me. We've booked in for next month.

10 years ago I'd have given it 2 stars, after being advised it had improved massively we thought we'd give it another go, and I highly recommend the place now, friendly, good food, nice environment, dog friendly, lovely time.

Great food and a fabulous old barn conversion that provided a wonderful atmosphere. They were busy at 13:00 but we were kept well informed. Our waitress was Kirsty and she was exceptional. Chatty, charming and efficient. Great afternoon with friends and we will, like the swallows after which the restaurant is named, return.

The food here is great, good menu, lovely surroundings, log fire to keep you warm. Reasonable prices, quite slow service, so prepare to stay longer. Nice staff.

Our server (Dexter) was very nice and attentive as well as very knowledgeable about drinks and any alternatives. We all really enjoyed our food and specifically mentioned our compliments to the chef (Rich). We had a mix of some having roasts (which were apparently delicious) and some ordering off the regular menu (I did and was very pleased with my Sea Bass). The venue itself is beautiful and we will be returning again soon! Thanks!

As a family we have been numerous times over the last couple of months and always found it exceptional for food, service and atmosphere. This last time the service from Natalie was exemplary. My daughter who is a celiac was taken through what she could and could not have which was brilliant. 5* to Natalie.

Food was over cooked and sent back, I was left for over an hour before anyone even took my plate. Shame because the atmosphere is quite nice.

Food was lovely, the building is beautiful. Very clean and tidy. However the service wasn't the best. Our server was very forgetful and seemed overwhelmed. Forgot our drinks then forgot to correct our bill after we provided a blue light discount.

Went when very quiet in fact only 2 in the bar, 2 bar staff very friendly another was definitely in the wrong job 🙄 very miserable just stayed on the right side of rude! In fact was almost beginning to affect my own mood!! Even my partner mentioned it and she's normally very quiet..he's bringing ur place down!! I was only in for a cpl. Cocktails so didn't stay long!!

Burger was great, pizza was anemic and floppy and the halloumi fries were cremated. Stick to the Burgers and you'll be ok.

Great looking building with loads of parking. Just had a Boxing day luch for seven people and was impressed by the food which there was plenty of and the service which was very good. Would go there again. By the way the bill was very reasonabe too for a Boxing Day.

Friendly pub/restaurant, with a nice atmosphere. We visited today for Sunday lunch, for the first time. The vegan roast was large, but quite disappointing - just vegetables with some sort of nuts & fruits creation on top (picture shown is before gravy, a parsnip & broccoli arrived). My partner had the vegan aubergine parmigiana, which, again, I would say was quite underwhelming. Definitely could do better with vegan options. 24/12/24 we visited again today for a Christmas Eve family lunch. Of the unexciting vegan options, I went for the aubergine gratin; it was quite bland and came with an undressed salad & plain bread (not even margarine available); they really do need to do better

We came here for our works Christmas do on the Christmas charity quiz night. It was so much fun, we had our food from the festive menu, which was delicious and considering how busy the night was, all the staff were amazing throughout and looked after us as a big table.

We had a very lovely lunch at the swallows, our sever Honey was excellent and very welcoming, would definitely recommend

Very disappointed with our lunch today, had to wait at least 45 minutes before our food arrived, only to find that the fish was overcooked, more batter than fish, if there is a wait, would be a good idea to inform the customer. Will think twice before we try again.

This restaurant has all the right things going for it.Easily accessible from the main A259 Worthing to Littlehampton Road, plenty of car parking space and a warm welcoming interior creating an environment that exudes charm. So where did it miss out? Well the staff were pleasant and having been shown to our table our drinks arrived promptly with the menus. Having ordered we sat back in anticipation and waited and waited. Yes it was 5 days before Christmas but the food arrived 50 minutes later! Only when the waiter was made aware of our unease did he offer an explanation of where our food was. Four meals then arrived but it was another 5 to 10 minutes before the final one turned up. Three plates of Fish and Chips were mediocre and the fish had been overcooked and over battered. The Fishcakes and the Chicken Schnitzel were better. We were asked if our meals were ok and we did not complain as we should have done, for fear that we might have had to wait even longer for a replacement. The whole experience was underwhelming. Living locally we were hoping that this restaurant would have improved on a previous disappointing visit, a couple of years back, which led to us not wanting to return. Sadly we have been put off bringing our family here over the Christmas period. Clearly the problems lay in the ability for the kitchen to cope with the demands placed on it for whatever reason.

Sadly disappointed with the festive menu. The quality of the food did not match the price. All felt as if it had been kept warm and not freshly cooked. Stuffing and bread sauce not provided. I know that’s a personal choice but I expected them.

We visited 'Mark & Team' for my Birthday Dinner on Sat 14th Dec. We requested one course only from the Festive Menu expecting it to equate to the price of an average Main Course.. But to our surprise, we were shocked to receive a bill of circa £80 for just 2 Main Courses and 2 Drinks! We were expect to pay ££50 to £60 We are local and regular customers, but now we'll think twice about coming again((

Went for a staff xmas meal all dinners were pre booked, no service, no greeting, no bar staff, food was an hour later than booked, never again, gave up after main meal as was dry and cold, left before the long wait for pudding!!

Great looking restaurant and plenty of parking. Manager today at the bar at 12pm was polite, friendly and professional. Dog friendly. Ordered via QR code, easy to use, drinks and food delivered to your table. Food was reasonably priced, big portion and nicely cooked and presented. Overall, a great dinning experience out of town. Would visit again and do recommend.

We arrived at 15:55 and waited for at least 5 minutes before anyone spoke to us. Our table wasn’t ready until 16:15 and during this time my 85 year old mum, who was using a walking stick, was not offered a seat while we waited. The table was laid for 5 instead of 6, another knife was missing and we asked 3 times for a knife before a member of staff gave us a knife from another table. We waited for about 45 minutes for our meal for our and the person who I believed was the manager served us with two vegan aubergine gratins, but he referred to the meal as aubergine Parmesan! We had to confirm it was the gratin as we wanted a vegan meal. We were not asked if we wanted any condiments with our meals and we had to get the attention of a member of staff to help. The manager was very abrupt and unhelpful during our visit. We felt very unwelcome and we were extremely disappointed with the whole experIence.

Took part in their 40% offer on Thursday early evening, very busy the staff were coping. Table booking missed. Food good as always.We will return (like the swallows).

Food was good, beer well kept and service excellent. However the ambience in the area we were placed was awful - in the rear of the restaurant with harsh lighting, paint peeling from the walls, no soft furnishings and hence extremely noisy.

Love the food at the Swallows and was well cooked by Dom R and came out piping hot, Kirsty was our Waitress and arranged our table as our number was larger than expected, I had the roast Turkey with Trimmings and crumble for dessert. Will return to this venue

It is a few years since I've visited the Swallows Return, sadly having been put off by a bad experience. Visited on 28/10/24 (reluctantly due to no other booking options available). Very pleasantly surprised! My husband said his mushroom starter was the best he's ever had(and he's had a lot!).Sunday roasts were delicious, lovely roast potatoes and veg. In particular wanted to mention our waitress Lucy who was so on the ball at a very busy Sunday afternoon. She had her eyes on all the tables and knew just what she was doing! Well done Lucy 👏

What a great night with friends, food was cooked to perfection and no long wait, staff were brilliant and very helpful as there were a few of us eating, will be going again.

The Sunday lunch was amazing! We sat in the garden, by choice, the surroundings were a bit lack lustre, not much beauty around and seen as is close to a27 some thought could have gone into creating a natural sight/sound barrier I.e. with bamboo. Yes garden needs some more attention and the food, friendliness and service was wonderful.

We had a group meal here for a birthday the service wasn't brilliant to be honest long wait between starters mains and dessert after everyone had been served mains 1 of our party was still waiting 20 minutes later for a steak . The food well people who had the gammon said it was very tough the burgers were overcooked hard on the sides . The swallows return is a lovely venue shame about the experience we had don't think we will be returning anytime soon

My waitress Lauren was really polite and considerate and smiley. Sam the chef made my food to perfection. Everything tasted amazing. It was a lovely atmosphere and will definitely be back again.
