The Sussex Arms in Richmond upon Thames

Twickenham used to be great for pubs, now sadly they're losing touch ending up as at best mundane, and worst as simple booze dives. This one still has what it takes however. Putting the excellent range of beers (though often interspersed with somewhat trendy 'craft beers' - still a bone of contention for the real ale buffs) to one side for a moment, the pub retains it's original character. Real fires in winter, decent (rather than beautiful) garden for summer. A turntable for music (!) - and then that played at a pleasant volume. Staff are helpful, informed and hard working. Food looks tasety (I haven't tried it but it seems well prepared and unpretentious), and good value for money. Snacks are pricey - but then show me a pub where they aren't. True this is a real ale lovers CAMRA type pub. But the friendly staff and, lets not forget, the friendly, sometimes eccentric, local clientele, make this a welcoming place to go for a quick drink or an evenings relaxation. Well worth a trip.

This is a great pub with excellent traditional food, pie and mash and roasts are tasty. This is backed up by a great selection of ales and perfect pre venue for rugby. Served by Daniella this time, who was friendly as are all the staff in my experience.

Unreal roast servings, the pork belly is *chef's kiss* we had their sharing roast and wow. That is a lot of very good quality food. Lovely cosy pub atmosphere. Amazing selection of ciders and ales on draught. It has quickly become our local.

nice odd ball pub not at all like any other in the area as it's cool. a million beers, vinyl playing classics, good vibe, garden and food and fantastic staff. Heated beer garden area, live sports and beer festival events.

Paul and Jo are excellent hosts, delicious pints of pavement press on tap. Twickenham's finest, I shall return!

We held a wake here on a Monday afternoon. In planning and preparation the staff could not have been more accommodating. Meeting our requirements of all the foods we know our departed would have loved. Jam scones, Fancy Fondant's, Smoked Salmon etc. Pink Prosecco to greet our guests. It was all perfect.

I love this pub!! I’ve been coming here on my London holidays since 2011. The staff is excellent. Daniella and Paul have been amazing this week. Paul even tapped my favourite porter from Titanic (plum porter). I’m here once a year and wouldn’t have cask ale anywhere else in Twickenham.

Paul and Daniella were brilliant. The food and drink were exceptional.

Down from Yorkshire for a bit. Excellent pub scran! I had the pork kebab, rich was tasty and filling. And the range of beers here is splendid. Thanks Daniella and the gang!

My favourite pub and my 'local' even though it's a 30-minute bus ride away. Great staff too.

Great place to go for lunch before the quins match. It gets really busy on international games days so make sure you pre-book and get there early! Toilets are decent and clean. Small children's play area is nice for our two to go and play. Great atmosphere and the chef is very good with gluten free. On a previous visit he came out to chat to our gf party member to advise. Really impressed. Great selection of ciders, lagers and ales on the taps as well.

My first visit to this beautiful, atmospheric pub and it’s instantly one of my favourites anywhere. The cask ale is perfect and the pub is just so charming and comforting. It’s a perfect place to spend an afternoon.

First time in the Sussex Arms, was welcomed by regulars and the bald guy behind the bar. He talked me through all the different ales to find one I’d like, and the pint was lovely. Had a steak and the meal was cooked very well. Would come definitely come back

The manager was nice enough to give us a different beer on the food deal. The staff are all lovely and 80% are called Lauren. Good times!

Probably the BEST pub for a Sunday roast, not only because the food is wonderful! (Pork belly is the fave) but because everyone is so lovely. Got served by the wonderful Kyler, and the manager Paul popped round our table also to say hello and check on the food :) will definitely try to come here every Sunday.

Having booked a table to eat we were put inside the bar area which was very noisy. Barmaid was rude and unhelpful. No wine glasses left. Fish and chips were tasteless with cold mushy peas and lacked presentation. Would not recommend.

Best pub in Twickenham, always a wonderful, friendly greeting when you enter the pub. Paul is a brilliant manager and really looks after his team, Jo is wonderful and Harry R and both Laurens are always so friendly and helpful. The beer garden is great, but there’s a lovely cozy atmosphere inside the pub, with open fires in the winter and music played on vinyl. What more can I say.

Huge selection of well cared for ales in a friendly relaxed environment. We called in on a Thursday evening and the steak night was on, the fillet steak with chips was a perfectly medium rare with a great peppercorn sauce.

Once a mecca for a wide selection of quality cask ales. Sadly hasn't had the demand to meet it's beer selection for a long time. The atmosphere and staff are almost always worth the visit alone but I wish they'd just have a smaller rotation of ales and ciders that they could rotate in a short time, rather than over 20 that pickle over the course of how ever many days they sit undrunk. A gem of a pub that could do with a bit of fixing up. Wouldn't be the first time in it's long beloved history!

The place was heaving on a Sunday, and customers had to queue at the bar to order. But the food arrived impressively quickly and was very good. We had the “sharing roast” in the “monster yorkie” and it lived up to its name.

Worst food I had in London. I even came 2 times to give a chance. The fish and chips was disgusting. It smells like dirty place. The only good reason to come is the garden.

This is good place to visit and easy to get to after watching Rugby at The Stoop. A friendly and interesting pub. Also close to local bus routes.

Great afternoon/evening at the Gin and beer festival, friendly chef on the bbq cooking up lovely burgers shame they run out as was going back for seconds

The burger meat for the buttermilk chicken and kimchi burgers appeared to be refried and there was coleslaw instead of kimchi in the kimchi burger. Pavement press cider was good. Otherwise this place is worth avoiding for dinner on account of freshness.

The smell from the pub as you walk from the side of the bar to outside absolutely stinks and is so off-putting. It's seriously 🤢🤮 Not sure if that was just the evening we went or constant but won't be returning in a hurry to find out. (Friday 30th August).

This was by far one of the best hospitality experiences I have been blessed to experience. I got served by Tom and Paul, somehow at the same time whilst they were 3 deep at the bar. It seems like they could take everyone’s order at the same time whilst looking after every person in there. My family and I had steaks in their famous Thursday steak night. Not only is it incredibly reasonably priced but it was beyond delicious, with the peppercorn sauce being the best I have ever had. The service, the food and the ambience for a Thursday was beyond what I could ever expect. Happy is an understatement. Thank you from me and my family!

It clearly wasn’t their first rodeo!!! Never have I seen before such brilliance when 3 deep at the bar. I arrived at a quiet pub, ready for my delicious steak dinner. Surprised as to how quiet it was as I arrived, it quickly turned around, filling up within minutes. Tom and Paul who somehow found the time to give me the best service I have received in years, where swept under their feet but made it seem like they were born to provide the best service in all of the land. To this day, I don’t think I will ever receive such incredible service. 1000 thank you from me and my family.

Came for a some bank holiday fun with friends meeting my baby daughter for the first time. The staff, especially Paul was very accommodating so that I was comfortable with my pushchair with space for feeding. I had a roast dinner; the pork. It was delicious, compliments to the chef. The staff on the bar were knowledgable in letting me know which drinks were low % in alcohol to suit my needs. Will absolutely be coming back to this very family friendly pub. Fab place!

Very welcoming pub with excellent food and a great range of lagers and ales! Service was excellent but there was a bit of a wait. Particular thanks to Paul and Lauren! They were very efficient and attentive and when we had a slight issue with ice cream, Lauren was quick to resolve the problem. Thank you! A great time overall! Will be returning.

Lovely local Pub. Food menu is great with plenty of choice, highly recommended the pie or Sunday lunch. Huge portion sizes! Staff were super friendly and helpful. Thank you to Paul for recommending I try the local sourced pie, which was amazing as well as the fruity beer.

Visited as I heard the pub quiz was good, which indeed it was. My main issue was with the lack of staff on the bar (1 person!) and the very slow service during the quiz break during which you’d think to put a couple of extra staff on the bar? Food was alright but overpriced. The draught cider tasted very poor and ultimately was a waste of money.

Had a great day at the Sussex today the staff were great especially Paul who was great to us. Would recommend for anyone who’s in the area!

Still the best pub in the area in terms of its amazing selection. As a cider drinker, it’s the only place where can get a decent choice. The pub itself is quite small but in the summer the beer garden is great. Some Sundays is overrun by over demanding parents, who forget it’s a pub not a crèche. But food is good, so I can see why it attracts them

Confirmed Euros booking for 3 people, as stated on original booking, one with mobility issues. Only 2 chairs able to have a view of the only tv in the room. Ruined the evening & the staff were not helpful when we brought this to their attention. Clearly, no care is taken for people with disabilities (why would they want to watch the euros? Priority given to able bodied). As for the food, the fried chicken tasted like fish and the Heinz glass bottles of ketchup on the table are filled with some sort of red off brand nightmare. Do better.

Ordered a pint of Diet Coke ......turned up flat and strange after taste. Defo not authentic Diet Coke or watered down???? ...charged £4.20 .Negative response when approached staff over issue hence this review

We came to watch the football in the tent outside. Great atmosphere and screens were spread out for good viewing. Got tempted by the food and it didn’t disappoint, very good fish and chips

At 8 o’clock I instead of being politely asked to leave the server came up to us and shouted for us to leave because we had children. Then she accuse a 14 year old of drinking Guinness when he hadn’t touched it . The woman started swearing at us and shouting and a server said the r slur. Wouldn’t recommend

We booked a large outdoor area for my partners 30th birthday and would highly recommend to anybody wanting a nice space to celebrate. Paul and the team were great - checking in prior to confirm timings, taking the time to put up all the decorations so it was ready when people advised and were also extremely attentive on the night making sure all ran smoothly. Had a nice roast dinner - food a little on the cold side but roast beef dinner was tasty. Vegetarian roast option was not so good unfortunately - cashew and mushroom bake not very nice.

Been here twice and had two very different experiences. First time was excellent (it was prior to a harlequins match), service and food was brilliant even spoke to the chef, kids play area was fantastic as we had little ones with us. Second time it was not so good, it was for the double header at Twickenham, got their to find our table was quadruple booked because they were so busy, I didn't realise we'd be sitting with other people if we sat outside, must have missed it. There was no table service and the app was disabled, presumably because it was so busy, so we needed to order at the bar which was absolutely rammed, took us 45 minutes to get to the front, others were waiting longer and due to the wait times on the food we missed the start of the rugby. On a positive note though the staff were really friendly and helpful despite being overwhelmed and the food was good too.

good music and pretty big beer garden; out of the food options I’d recommend the pork bao buns, they were really nice the vibe is okay, but keep in mind the garden is very kid-friendly which is obviously good for some people but maybe not so great for others!
