The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham

I had a wonderful night here last night. Really good live music downstairs and then an amazing DJ upstairs. Our group had planned to leave after the live music but the DJ was just to good, he kept us all dancing. First ever visit, it won't be the last.

Love the vibe, staff wont put up with drunk tom foolery, if your a music lover this is the place to be, like minded individuals and a brilliant vibe emit from this venue

Visited this venue to see Casey McQuillen. A very intimate venue but really enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff were really friendly. Would definitely recommend a visit even if it's just for a drink.

Was surprised at how small this little hidden gem was. We went to see Casey McQuillen on the last night of her tour. It was friendly, felt safe and was a really fun and cosy venue to see emerging artists perform. Drinks were priced well but standing up all night was tough on my back but didn’t spoil the night for me.

Good music venue. Better choice of beers would improve it.

Fyi the soul shack wasn't there. Dismal, dank, depressing place, no atmosphere, felt dirty and oppressive when walking in. Only one toilet operative. Feel sorry for the act we went to see. Thankfully we'd seen her earlier in the tour, we stayed for a couple of songs and left. Had planned to come to another show in a couple of weeks but I'll try and see him elsewhere now, definitely won't be coming back here for anything.

Went to a gig here, and found myself doing it with a crutch, shortly after knee surgery. No way to get around the stairs, of course - but the staff were all incredibly helpful and understanding, and made it possible for me to still enjoy the event. Absolute stars. Great gig venue, too.

Friendly staff make for a lovely experience at The Sunflower lounge Visited here to see a band in the basement room and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff are lovely and allowed us to try a beer to see if we liked it Prices are average for city centre with a good choice of beer. Will definitely visit again

He estado varias veces en este lugar sin problemas: buena selección de bebidas y excelente lugar para música en vivo Entramos el lunes a la hora del almuerzo y el chico detrás del bar estaba hablando por teléfono, lo cual está bien, no hay problema. No nos importa esperar a que nos sirvan unos minutos, o tomar asiento hasta que termine. Nos quedamos en el bar y esperamos unos 5 minutos sin ser reconocidos. El chico estaba literalmente mirando en la dirección opuesta. Después de unos minutos pasados, nos reunimos con un grupo de mujeres mayores que probablemente vinieron en busca de algunas bebidas / almuerzos como nosotros. Esperamos unos minutos más y nos fuimos. Aprecio que a veces la gente está ocupada, pero un reconocimiento rápido y "estar con usted en unos pocos minutos" habría hecho un gran esfuerzo. Salimos, recorrimos la carretera en snobs y almorzamos y tomamos unas copas por una hora aproximadamente. El grupo de mujeres que nos vieron salir parecía que estaban haciendo lo mismo. En una ciudad donde la comida y la bebida están en todas partes y la competencia abunda, esto es decepcionante. Un segundo para decirte estar contigo en un minuto, o tomar una mesa y estar allí pronto, nos sentaríamos y gastaríamos dinero.

Always pop into this boozer before a gig at the 02academy birmingham. It's a funky little hole.

Great for seeing local and less main stream bands and artists perform. It could do with a bit of a facelift but wouldn't put me off going again.

Went on a Friday evening to see live bands playing original music. Small bar on ground floor and smaller bar in basement but serves it's purpose. Drinks not too pricey ,would go again.

Have a great time every time I see a gig here, one of my favourite venues. Good choice of drinks and not too expensive, easy to get to from the train station. Probably the best place to find alternative music

I love the Sunflower. The people who tend to frequent here are some of the friendliest around. The staff are great! I wish I could get there more frequently.

We visited The Sunflower Lounge as a group of 10 on a Saturday night it was my first time there and I did find it a little strange, drinks in Birmingham aren't cheap in general and this place is no exception a beer will cost over £4. If I'm totally honest it wasn't my type of place at all but each to their own.

Decent beer, typical town prices, good music and atmosphere and friendly staff.

We had seen a gig at the NEC. Deciding we still needed to drink and dance and took the small trip from NEC to birmingham new street. Hillarity all the way. . Discovered this wee venue and got atuck to the floor as buying our drinks. And realised they were shutting... alas

so after long the staff and I we decided to go for a drink after long years at sunflower lounge. we were greeted by an amazing coloured security. we were having a good time and spent a lot of money in the bar. everything was ruined by an another security that was on duty with the other security. rude rubbish customer service and totally unwelcome. the day was 08th of april 2017. he was pushing as out and showed us only hatred towards us. I hope he gets out of the place cause he really gives a bad reputation to the place. never in my life met such a revolting person. he is Asian ethnic person. shocking how he threats customers. shocking shame on him.

Went to see a band there and found that the place was tiny... the band was told it was intimate but it was just crowded n chlostrophobic we ended up standing on the stairs where we could not see all of the band members... on the brighter side drinks were average price and I'd go there again but only for the pub.

Great little place for a pre gig drink! Beer was fresh and tasty. Had a Brooklyn Lager, usually buying that in other bars it tastes abit off but, bang on! Good selection of vodka too.

I went for a local brew (I think) called a "Guinness", very stylish! They didn't have any p-nuts only b-nuts (what's that about?)

After a disappointing experience at Meating we went in search of drinks. We came across the Sunflower Lounge which I was aware of but had never visited. Initially we were apprehensive as we were 2 couples of 40 plus age group and kids but we spotted space at the bar and dived in. It was a mostly 20 something crowd but unjudgemental with a positive vibe. We ordered drinks and got straight on the dance floor. DJ was playing vinyl northern soul. Excellent music choice and he even lit up the glitterball on request which got cheers from all of us. We had to catch the last train home which dragged us off the dance floor otherwise we would have stayed til the death. Places like this are few and far between these days; reminded me of the old Hummingbird days. Can't recommend enough; outstanding.

Walked in to get something to eat at Saturday lunchtime only to be told they no longer serve food. I was pretty miffed because of all these delicious pictures on TripAdvisor.

This place is excellent! The pub on the ground floor features both indie rock & pop and well established rock music in the background, while the Southern American inspired menu is amazing. I've tried out their Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger and it was simply delicious! In terms of gigs, the basement offers a small stage and bar and they have indie bands or artists playing there every week. Definitely a must-go if you're in Birmingham.

I've never eaten at the sunflower lounge before but heard about this new menu so gave it a shot. Sooooo glad I did!!! The southern oven serves up delicious New Orleans inspired food, I had the chicken burger which was HUGE and so tasty! The wings are also delicious and the mac n cheese is second to none. Cannot recommend this place enough, really great quality, authentic food and friendly staff in a good atmosphere :) 10/10

La comida es impecable... el alitas de pollo entrantes preciosa!! En nuestra mesa teníamos el suero de pollo hamburguesa Vegetariana y el gumbo... y queso... papas fritas mac cajún y patatas fritas de camote. Todos disfrutamos de sus comidas y no me puedo quejar. Tuve el mac y queso como comida principal y es el mejor de todos!! Muy abundante y contundente! Servicio rápido... muy amable y la comida en general es excelente. Realmente lo recomiendo si va a probar el menú del sur horno no te decepcionará!

Sin duda no es tu comida estándar pub, realmente creativa y mezclas menú hermoso sabor hizo que mi visita una excitante y placentera. No te decepcionará, y eso es una garantía JVB!! Ñam ñam!!!

The bar area can get a bit dirty but the concert space in the basement is top notch. The gigs are intimate and have atmosphere. If you want to see some decent local bands before they hit it big time, this is the place.

This is more of a bar than a restaurant. We were here for lunch and all they had was precooked pane, grilled fish, veal, chicken, and pasta plus a few vegetables that you can pick out and pay for. Better get here early when the food is fresher and appears more appetizing. They do serve “Niro d’avola,” a private reserve red wine that was very good.

It's a small but fun venue to see bands. You get quite close and personal with the band and everyone there but definitely worth a visit.

Quick pit stop whilst shopping in Birmingham, I'd heard this was the place to go for sweet potato fries. I weren't let down by my expectations whatsoever. As burgers go, one of the best I've had, a soft fluffy brioche bun and a gorgeous sticky brisket between the patty and bun.. Absolutely beautiful! Superb Beer selection too, definitely a must for a casual Beer & Burger with mates. If you're a fan of live up and coming music artists too, apparently this is one of Brum's hottest venues.

Saw the reviews on trip advisor and thought it would be a good place to go friday night for some food. The menu looked good and fairly reasonably priced. Upon entering the place though, it felt fairly cramped. With the majority of people there just drinking, we were unsure as to whether the food would meet the high reviews this place has had. Not letting that deter us as we sat down for food. We had ordered starters as well as mains, all with drinks. The food was fairly good though friends of mine thought that the burgers were very greasy. I myself had the hotdog which for the price, seemed fairly small and unsubstantial once it arrived. the best part of the meal were the sweet potato fries as well as the drinks which helped what was fairly average food, go down. Would only recommend this place on the drinks as the food was not of a quality to be able to warrant being a top 50 establishment in Birmingham.

Me and my girlfriend ate here about 3 weeks ago based on the good TripAdvisor reviews. The food arrived quickly and we were in a rush to get to the cinema so that was good. We had the Nachos to share, the portion was decent but the meat on top (it was either beef brisket or pork) was quite dry and hadn't been pulled properly because we just had long stringy pieces.We also had the buttermilk chicken which was really nice but quite greasy. If you are after a quick bite of reasonably priced comfort food then I'd recommend you pop in.

7 of us ate there earlier today. Definitely lived up to the reviews. Great prices, not much of a wait, really laid back vibe and the food was really good! Will be back next time I'm in Birmingham.

when we arrived we waited half an hour to first get served at the bar. Then, once I ordered I was asked for my ID. I presented an accepted form of ID to be turned down after the waiter fumbled around not knowing if my ID was accepted or not. Not a happy girl.

Over the years I've been going in for a quick drink. After reading some of the reviews about the food me an my girlfriend decided to try it out. We wasnt let down. I think its always important to support these more independent bars rather than going to a chain as they offer more character.Tom who works there was really helpful an even suggested where to go next an what to do as we was doing the whole tour of Birmingham thing.The place won't blow your socks off but for good beer/wine and food at a good rate I don't think it can be beat. Safe to say we will be back.

My girlfriend and I went for some food here on a Saturday evening because we'd seen some great reviews. At first I was surprised as the place was not as I'd expected and doesn't look like the sort of place I would usually eat but the food was great, the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. We left as it started to get busy but I'd definitely go back.

Popped in on my own for a quick bite to eat and a pint. Had one of the stack burgers which was tasty and a craft beer. The place was quiet and relaxed (it was mid afternoon).

went to watch Broken Hands Band, arrived and the bar was very lively, its not a big place, but plenty of room even so, the bands play downstairs, great acoustics, not a big room, but tickets sales mean that we were not jammed in like sardines, one thing though the floor was so sticky, at time I literally had to force my shoe off the floor to dance / walk !

Me and my mum visited the Sunflower Lounge whilst visiting Birmingham after seeing the great trip advisor reviews and we were not disappointed!Firstly, don't be put off by the interior! It is obviously a bar/ nightclub in the evenings so doesn't have that polished restaurant/ cafe interior, however the food is definitely worth sitting down for!!The menu is limited but has a good selection of american favorites with a twist. I opted for the blackened catfish starter with sweet potato fries to make it into a main. The fish was beautifully cooked and was accompanied by an absolutely fantastic succotash salad. My mum went for the classic buttermilk chicken which was to die for. Portions were large and the prices were very good value (under £20 for 2 people). We were just gutted they did not have any puddings on offer.Service was very friendly. My mum ordered some wine and as they didn't have enough to make the full glass, they very kindly gave it to her on the house.Overall, Sunflower lounge is definitely the place I would return to if I was in Birmingham.

I have literally been to every bar in Birmingham and the Sunflower lounge is without doubt the best place to be for a good night out. The atmosphere is amazing, full of life and great people! The staff are really friendly and fun, a real great bunch of people! Also they have awesome live music and every time I go there they have a different band playing, like really good well known bands!! Then in the upstairs bar they always have a DJ blasting out the tunes!! All the nights I've spent at the sunflower have been top nights. If you like a good night out with good music the sunflower lounge is an absolute must! Also they have some VERY tasty food on the menu and as a chef I must say I'm very impressed with the quality and price! See you on Friday Sunflower lounge :)

Visit often, a great place to pop in for a drink, great location. Always have a good time and the food is excellent. Staff are brilliant and there's great music.

This is my second vidit and they never fail to impress..The food is divine and heavenly and the service is top notch..Would be back soon with more friends when i visit Birmingham next !!!

When you walk in, it looks a bit like those old style pubs with minimal lighting and craft beers on tap. I don't drink though, so that description so far would be ok for people who do! However the food was oh so worth it. Fast, delicious, freshly cooked, we had the buttermilk chicken which was like a taste of America. Their soul food menu is decent, and the price wasn't too bad considering the alternative (several hundred pound flights to New Orleans!)!

I came here for the first time on Wednesday with an event I had organised.The staff were really fun, the atmosphere relaxing and the food was fantastic with catering for all our needs!I would definitely recommend this place as a social or for dinner as we had a great experience and its definitely somewhere I would go again.

This had food combinations I hadn't eaten before, which is always exciting. We had lunch. I had brisket with fried egg and bbq sauce. Sounded weird, tasted awesome. My friend had the nachos with the usual toppings. But not only were the toppings clearly homemade (guacamole, salsa), the nachos were made there too. Blooming gorgeous. Nice atmosphere, good music. Would go again for dinner.

Visited after other TA reviews and it was definitely worth it!! Hidden away you might struggle to find it,as we did, but well worth the search. I had the buttermilk chicken which was so tender and the right amount of space. My friend had the patty and pulled pork burger which looked equally appetising. Small space which you really wouldn't expect the quality of food. Good big portions and a choice of rough cut or sweet potato fries. Staff where helpful and attentive but not pushy.

Greeted with a smile, served promptly, and the quality of the food was of the highest order. Went for chicken wings to start and burger and chips with a side of coleslaw for mains. Can honestly say the wings were the nicest I've ever eaten. The burger had quantity and quality, with the pulled pork topping bringing it to the next level. Side of coleslaw was sensational and proved that attention to detail is given to the whole meal and not just the mains. Will most definitely be back on my next visit to birmingham

We had one of the burgers and one of the sandwiches and I just can say they were wicked.We had the nachos as well, amazing, nothing like the rubbish served on Wetherspoon's or any pub like.Maybe they don't have a really extended menu but is not needed if what they offer is as good as what we tried.Good looking food, big portions and better flavours.

The buttermilk chicken is hands down the best chicken I have ever tasted! Cooked to perfection! Great service too! Will definitely be back! :)

Big burger fans we had to check this place out and definitely was not dissatisfied! The drinks were well priced and the food I couldn't fault, the chicken wings starter were my favourite (zesty and fell straight off the bone - beautiful stuff !) Fella was impressed with the brisket burger .. double beef what's not to love? ..Overall a great evening .. would love to check out the music nights and try some of the other dishes

Wife and I went for an early lunch. Chose this place on previous recommendations. New menu started today, had catfish & sunny hash to start. Very nice. Main was buttered chicken and Reuben toasted sandwich, supper taste for both, Mayo a little disappointing though.Little gem of a place that's offering something different from the franchised food experience. Give it a go, you might be surprised.

It's a very basic no-frills kind of pub that is a little bit too cramped, but the food is gooood. The buttermilk chicken and ribs are finger-licking good.
