The Sun Inn in South Lakeland

Called in for lunch. Decided that the chicken sharing board would be enough for the two of us. Made a mistake. We think it could have fed four. Ended up getting a doggy bag. Really enjoyed it.

Brilliant lovely room very spacious, great staff very helpful central location

Terrible the staff were uncooperative had to ring manager to see if we could stay didn’t state children couldn’t stay should state adults only. When entering the room had a terrible Oder we were there 5 mins and booked somewhere else would not recommend.

Kickstarted our Cumbria Way adventure at Sun Inn, and couldn’t have been better. Cozy, lively atmosphere and very friendly staff. Our room was clean and comfortable, with great views of Ulverston. Have to give a special shout-out to Liam and Jack at Sun Inn for being so attentive and gentlemanly when we requested to leave our bags behind for a bit of exploring. Get the garlic mushroom starter if you’re eating!

Excellent food, enjoyed thoroughly

Nice bar area with food, 5 stars for food and drink. Parking comes at a first come basis but free of charge. The bed is comfortable. The room itself, we'll look at the photos, basically it could do with a bit of maintenance and cleaning. This was £101 for bed and breakfast and the hot breakfast does not start until 9am.

Went to the rose and crown for dinner and then went to the sun inn for a couple more drinks bit never stayed in the rooms. The service I and location is really good l. Would definitely go again

Basic clean room for overnight stay ,be aware very very limited parking

A basic room, but as expected for the price. The bed was comfortable and I slept well, despite the warnings about noise.

Booked the private function room for a small work function and everything went perfectly. The staff were extremely helpful and organised. And we were able to move between upstairs and downstairs with ease to watch the football match at the time. The food was absolutely incredible and the leftover food was even boxed up. In summary, I’d highly recommend The Sun Inn for any parties or functions.

Called in at The Sun Inn for Sunday lunch. Had a starter of homemade soup and warm bread roll, followed by an absolutely amazing roast beef dinner. Warm and friendly staff with excellent service. Would highly recommend The Sun Inn for a drink and meal if you are ever in the area.

Went for tea for a friend's birthday. Food was lovely, service was great. A lovely atmosphere. And really good prices. Been a few times with friends and never disappointed yet.

A feel a bit mean not giving 5 stars for the room and service when taking in consideration the price. Slight issue with the noise on the Saturday night but given the location that is well worth it. Ulverston was a revelation, a great little town with loads of pubs. Too many Lake District towns are full of people in £500 Gortex jackets & massive walking boots (all spotless) where as Ulverston seemed far more friendly and down to earth. I very much expect to stay at The Sun again.

For the price it was absolutely fine. The pub itself is nice, with a cool beer garden outside. Food was good. Rooms were basic but have everything you need for a short stay. Shower was great. All the staff were really nice and helpful. I was there for the Velo Retro weekend and it was perfectly situated for the events in the town center. It was noisy at night, but you are warned about this several times during the booking process, so I can't complain about that. If you want a quiet stay you'll have to go a bit further out from the town center.

Great location, staff very friendly, got warned about the noise but that never bothered us, room was clean bed comfortable. Only down side breakfast wasn't that good, but once again the service was good.

Great location in the heart of Ulverston which is a pretty little town in the South Lakes well worth a visit. They warned about noise but it didn’t bother me on the top floor - although this would be a climb for the elderly or infirm. The room was small but clean. You did need to run the shower a long time for the hot water to reach it, (which a sign warned about). Staff were friendly and I was pleased with my visit.

Always a great venue for ale, wine and food

We stopped here for sunday roast and it did not disappoint, we had 4 roasts and 2 kids meals and all we're really nice quality food. The bar serves a wide range of ales lager and ciders and all was very reasonably priced will definitely return when we are here again.

I booked this place in my quest to find a pub that wasn't showing sports. The website seems a bit misleading. It looks like a quiet pub with few tvs. It's very much a sports bar. We'd reserved a table which was in the restaurant area so it was quieter. There were no table numbers so it appeared to be table service but after waiting for quite a while and nobody coming to our table I went to order food at the bar. Turns out it is table service. They seemed a bit short staffed so it took a while to be served. The food was really nice. Only issue was my husband ordered a burger which should have come with bacon (and cost slightly more due to this) but didn't have any on. When he mentioned it the waiter offered to take his burger away and bring a new one. We declined as we'd waited quite a while for food as it was. No discount was offered which would have been an obvious solution. One of our drinks was forgotten but brought out quickly when we asked. If you want a sports bar with decent food this place is good, but not ideal for families. Seems like somewhere adults go to get drunk and watch tv. Based on the majority of customers I would avoid booking a room here, I can imagine it's quite tacky in the evening.

Lunch time for 2 very quiet inside. Ordered coffee, which was lukewarm when it arrived. We only ordered one course. Hotshot pizza and a cajun chicken baguette. Unfortunately the pizza wasn't great, the base was thin which I like but it was flacky like pastry not pizza dough, it could have done with another 90sec in the oven as well looked a bit anemic. Baguette was tasty but less than you get filling wise at other places we have eaten in the area, chips were really good. Generally speaking it's more expensive than your standard pub food but Ulverston does seem to have upped its prices at most eateries and bars over the last few years, I think if you walked 500yrds you would find another 5 or 6 places to eat . Despite all this we have had a Sunday lunch here and it was very good so my advice would be do Sundays and avoid Mondays.

More of a drinking pub, food was meh 😕. Atmosphere was meh, not for us. Wouldn't go back. Staff were friendly though.

Very disappointed to say the least room was at the top of building so many stairs so small cramped stains on carpet clothes rail very unsteady shower was terrible everything dated think twice before you book very uncomfortable in bar area not friendly at all only staff I seen was a young lad behind the bar which didn't know much if I had a inquiry nice area will go again but will stay elsewhere

A must visit great food and drink service. Very helpful staff . Great big 👍up. Will be visiting again next time we are over in the lakes.

Me and my partner stayed the night and had breakfast. Everything was great thank you. The staff were very friendly. The room was great and the breakfast was nice. Everything was great value for money. We will definitely stay again.

There's too much to negatively say, so the pros were , ideal position for all amenities, room was clean , tired but clean and the staff were polite. The only things I'd give a heads up about is the noise , even in the deluxe room (laughable really) on the very top floor it's still very noisy till at least 3am as there is a nightclub, late licence at the very least and as you can imagine people are not quiet when leaving, so thankfully I took my earplugs, amd I wouldn't pay for the breakfast

We came in for a spot of lunch. The staff were so friendly and couldn't do more for us. We were told by the staff that they had just changed their menu in January. We both ordered burgers which were absolutely amazing, my husband had a macaroni cheese burger that was so tasty and juicy, he's usually very fussy with burgers but loved this. I had a chicken burger which was so fresh. My son ordered a pizza from the kids menu, this was a fresh stone baked pizza. This place is also dog friendly, just not in the restaurant area. We will definitely be visiting again when we return to Ulverston.

Couldnt find anywhere to sit because the place was quite busy and it looked like theyd taken a lot of tables and chairs out. We only stayed for one drink due to the lack of sitting space. But it was nice!

Waiting 55 minutes for 2 sandwiches and 2 kids meals while the place was quiet. Questioned where the food was and ten minutes after the 2 sandwiches arrived and we were asked it we needed anything else - told staff member we had ordered 2 kids meals also and they proceeded to come out ten minutes after that. The food that did arrive was basic and not even worth the price or the wait - No sorry for the wait, nothing. One young girl working was lovely and polite but everyone else was abrupt and quite frankly terrible. Will absolutely not be returning and will not be recommending to anyone else. Disgusting service, disgusting food.

Went for an evening meal. Nice pub, quieter eating area. Food good. Ale good. Staff helpful and friendly.

I must mention the room was massive also a massive shower room. All bedding towels etc spotlessly clean. The food was delicious staff fabulous xxx

Awful experience overall. Would never return. Very basic rooms. Positives: food was good and most staff very good. Given it was a weekend, very surprising no manager on duty. Negatives: very noisy, worst on Saturday. If you like a party pub and no sleep, it should be great. Don't see how they can say they are child-friendly !! In Saturday night the people in the next room came up, screeching, laughing, shouting. Appalling, disgusting behaviour. Knocking on our door, shouting at us. Became so bad we left, at 1 09 am and moved to another hotel. Staff were helpful and understood, but no manager there, so no control or sanction on these disgusting people.

Great staff, food was good, poor rooms. Extremely noisy. Good if you like loud clubbing and rowdy customers. Forget about sleeping.

Changed a lot since last time I visited. It's shifted from being a slightly posh food pub to being a slightly unposh drinking den. It was packed when we got in, struggled to get to the bar and then struggled to find a seat. Lot of shouting men.

We only popped in here enroute from the train station to the middle of town. Had a quick pint and moved on. The beer was very well kept and in top form, price quite fair too. The place is probably not quite right for me, fruit machines and music was quite loud. But it was busy and had very polite staff - would definitely visit again.

The service we received was amazing, warm and welcoming and willing to accommodate all our needs. Beth was so friendly and made sure we had everything we wanted. Sunday lunch was excellent!

Great service, good food excellent local beer

I have been meaning to try The Sun Inn for some time as I heard that there was a new menu introduced . The Sun Inn is effectively a sports bar with a restaurant on the side quite close to the bar area. I ordered the steak and ale pie which came with chunky chips and mushy pies. The pie was delicious being presented in a wrought iron oven pan but the chips did not taste fresh. Probably prepared in advance and reheated when needed. Which was disappointing. The service was attentive and good and the waiter checked everything was ok and offered condiments if needed. The toilets let the the pub down. Despite a sign saying that they pride themselves on the cleanliness of the toilets they were filthy. The gents one toilet was blocked and there was water all around the toilet itself. The urinals smelt. To be honest they need a refurbishment and hopefully this is planned. But more attention needs to be given to this area to be brought up to an acceptable standard

Service was impeccable!! Food was typical pub grub! It's still the slightly grubby middle of town pub it has been for many years! Dogs loved it! Brought back many fun memories of 6th form afternoons whilst catching up with friends! Not easy to access from the car park for those with mobility issues.... use main entrance!

Great stay in this lovely pub. My room was very clean and comfortable. (Shower was great too). The staff and manager were excellent. My meal on Saturday night was great. I was pleased that when I checked in that they mentioned the bar was open till 2.30am, however it wasn’t too noisy at all. Highly recommend a visit & stay. Ulverston is a beautiful little town.

Decent local with decent range of beers. Plenty of screens for sport and a menu that’s good for basic eating. Not the poshest of places but good for an afternoon drink.

Absolutely wonderful food. Cannot not fault it. Staff are so warm and friendly and there is a lovely relaxed atmosphere at the Sun. Honestly would highly recommend a visit you won't be disappointed.

Ulverston is a great place to visit. Its lovely duringvthe day and lively at night. Lots of nice places to eat and drink. The Sun inn is in a great location. Staff are friendly. Rooms are clean and what to expect for the price. Pub is lively at night and music can be heard to the early hours. Was told this before so wasnt an issue. Would highly reccomend for a night out in Ulverston. Had a great time!

Good value for money and a limited menu but what we chose was very nice. Good clean pub with a good selection of drinks.

Good quick service from bar staff,despite it being a full pub

A few days before arriving in Coniston I sent them an email and a fb message for a table booking on the Saturday night. I received a response on the fb message on the day we arrived to say they only had food available in the bar and it was walk ins only. We headed up to the Sun and as soon as we entered the bar we were quickly ushered back out! Apparently there was a private function on, but it was evident that there were other random groups in there. Maybe the name should be changed to Fawlty Towers!

We had a nights stay at the sun inn, we were warned in advance that it could be a tad noisy, we were put on the top floor to which we thought the noise would be to a minimum.. I was wrong. It was rowdy until gone 2am.. the bedroom was what I would expect to pay for, a little tired but clean. The bathroom wasn’t up to standard at all and felt like I didn’t want to shower in it as it was a bit dated and unclean. The breakfast was a waste of money for what we paid.the pub was also a little scruffy especially going up to the rooms, but the staff were lovely. Won’t be staying again

It's alright, good range of ales, town centre atmosphere but yeah just alright really.

We booked the basic double for 1 night. Staff very helpful and friendly. Room was clean, warm and spacious. Mattress a bit soft for me but we slept really well anyway!

Great sports bar with seriously good food and fantastic service. We got loaded waffle fries & Mac n Cheese, both were great and 100% scratched our food itch & then some. Staff are super friendly too - we will definitely come back if we return to Ulverston!

Four nights in Grange over Sands. Stayed at the Commodore for 4 nights, DBB, the bar was welcoming, staff very helpful, hotel clean. Food and drink very good, albeit dinner was a good plateful, and as we're getting on a bit, did prove too much at times, but reasonable quality. Now for the accommodation, unfortunately not as good as expected, whilst a very good price for B&B, the room had some problems. Firstly it should be said that the staff were informed of these faults, who promised to inform "management". Light in the hall way, needed an new bulb, shower curtain needed replacing, been too long in water becoming discoloured. Cold tap very wobbly, needed tightening before something worse happens. Toilet seat needs fixing. During our first night, lots of banging, which I eventually found to be a loose upper sash window, stopped the banging with beer mats, but that made a gap between the to sash sections, talk about drafty and cold, and let the flies in! Tried to stop the draft with a towel, picture below. After our first night we were out for the day, returned to find that our room was not serviced. Response from staff was to the effect that we had not left out the "clean my room sign" out, problem was, we didn't have one, once we got one no problems. The wifi was non existent in the room, did as staff, but they could only agree with us, but again would tell management. Extremely to frustrating to use a phone as a hot spot when the 4G was pretty bad too. Finally, our room was for three people, the single room had a door, but the main bedroom did not have one, surely it would be prudent to have one for privacy! A bit of TLC would be helpful, the room was clean though, and the bed comfortable.

Room clean and spacious, friendly staff, nice food and good selection of beer. Oh and free car park. What's not to like!

Room 16 could do with a loo brush. Timer light in toilet too quick. Breakfast could be early that 9:00 am could be set up the night before with a cover over the food and flasks of hot water and flask of cold milk. Otherwise as alternative don't charge for breakfast but direct folk to Gregg's over the road. Decaf tea for room and breakfast please.

Great location great hotel great service what more can I say

Booked one of the updated rooms as we didn't want to be over the bar. Very basic, stained, mouldy shower curtain, black mold on the shower head. 🤢🤦 Still very noisy from the back of the hotel till early hours. Breakfast was good, only down fall was poached egg was more like a boiled egg, not running at all. Staff were fantastic.

What a great service we had at this pub, Ryan greeted us with such kindness helping my elderly Father find a comfortable chair. The food was amazing and plenty of it. All the staff were extremely attentive and friendly. We enjoyed our evening here. Thank you.

It is not a place to sleep. Bar was opened till half 2 in the morning. Then, the noise of the fan was very laud. I guess it was the kitchen's fan. Not having sleep due to all noises.

Great recommendation by a local. Food was excellent! Service quick. The Sunday roast were both lovely.

Just back from this hotel (wrong wording). Not happy and would not have even stayed one night if we could have got our money back. The budget rooms are very basic with a few planks of wood called bed. A few more called a wardrobe. Dirty damp walls and in our friends bedroom (they had to move from first bedroom as window opened onto pigeons toilet) a massive hole down the plastering and a broken lock so anyone could get in. On entering the Inn we knew from the dirty smelly state of it the rooms were going to be horrendous and we were not disappointed. We did pay meagre money but to be honest if they had have paid us we would still have complained. We then get to the noise outside omg. We were told we had been warned against that but we hadn't. All round good luck anyone staying there.

Only called in for a few jars..(and it was only a few), £6 for Heineken, I'm in no way tight but the pure economics of it is hard to fathom, I can jump on a bus to Dalton and get the same drink £3.. I can go over to the co-op and get a 12pk for £15, whilst I accept that pubs have many overheads, charging people £6 a pop is not acceptable in today's squeezed times.

Really disappointing. The website suggests a cosy pub atmosphere with well presented meals but fails to show that the restaurant area is directly attached to a club/bar with loud dance music and rowdy hen parties (this was on a Sunday evening). I can understand why over nighters have been concerned with the noise levels. We were fed reasonable food, mostly freezer food but ok. The bar staff were pratting about with a dog toy squeaker the whole time which we could hear from the table. Some of the restaurant staff were extremely polite and well trained. Unfortunately the gentleman who took our card payment walked off immediately and we weren’t even sure the payment had gone through. We had to check at the bar before making a speedy exit. Got dessert at Tesco Express instead.

I rarely write reviews however the service I received by two young men today was exceptional. Both young men are an asset and any front door service would be lucky to have them. Food was great too x my German Shepard puppy loved the outdoor area. Thanks lads your are both doing a terrific job xx Toni Mark and Bella xx 24/08/23

Worst pub experience ever, terrible.

We had a big gang of us 6 adults 2 kids and 2 dogs! Was seated in the bear garden! Very cleans Tables clean We ordered 3 platers of food! Wasn't expecting alot, but my god! It was a buffet of food! All very well presented! Food was hot and fresh! Only problem was the 6tf seagul but we had 2 kids that made sure he was kept at a safe distance! Beers was good! Defiantly recommended this place! Plus there was a hen do on as well haha

The staff are Absolutely Lovely!! I had to leave very early, and could not stay for a full breakfast, but the young woman at reception was delightful!! She brought me the basics of a delicious breakfast in no time!! And the room and washroom/shower, super clean. Of course if you wish to open the windows one can hear somewhat street noise etc. But i fell asleep quickly and had a wonderful rest !!

Una habitación cómoda tal como lo tienen en publicidad. En el centro de Ulverston una zona con varias tiendas donde tomar café y comer. Se está muy a gusto y el personal es amable. Llegué un domingo por lo que ya no había pub por las noches y sin ruidos.

Hemos estado varias veces allí, por motivo del popular festival internacional budista que hay cada año en el KMC Manjushri, en Ulverston. El precio es económico, las habitaciones espaciosas y limpias, que es lo único que necesitamos. Está justo en el centro del pueblo y tienen aparcamiento gratuito. Aunque no lo hayamos usado, es un valor añadido. El personal es amable y nos atendieron muy bien.

Nice central location, car park to the rear, can't go wrong for the price. Room I had (No1) is spacious, it is on the front of the hotel so the takeaway lights are on all night, only stayed one night.

Visited the bar with friends and family. Friendly helpful staff but can get busy so waiting times increase.

Was very busy & seemed under staffed so things did take a bit longer than expected but great service & lovely food. Was a mix up with one of the meals but the sorted it out quickly so we could all eat together.

Nice central location in Ulverston. Just popped in for 1 pint whilst staying in the area. Only thing that we felt was that locals were welcomed with more eagerness than visitors.

Good stay..bad parking experience

Went along with his evening for a meal with my husband & daughter. When we arrived in the pub we found a table we were just about to sit down at and a lady from the bar asked if we were a walk in or booked. (Given, there were no other people on the dining area, or no reserved signs)She told us we couldn't sit at the window where we had chosen, as it was set up for a highchair! There was no children there and no reserved sign and it could have easily been adjusted. Just puts me off places like this. If you don't want the custom people will go elsewhere & that's what we did!! Had a lovely meal at the Kings!🥳🥳

The room was clean and spacious however that was the only good point, there was only one chair in this room which was wonky so only one person could sit down, why have a double room with one chair? we was 2 hours late being let into our room and all night all we could hear was loud music from the party downstairs and noisy pipes that kept groaning loudly this went on until 3am then the couple below us started arguing loudly with the window wide open for all to hear, along with the seagulls screeching all night and in the morning our car was covered in scratches from the seagulls that was constantly foraging in the car park we now have to pay for those to be buffed out. breakfast was just awful I had scrambled eggs that I just simply swallowed as they had no taste and my hubby had full English which was very greasy and he only ate a little of it the barman/waiter only communicated in grunts and wore a dirty t-shirt, sorry but the hotel completely ruined what we thought would have been a relaxing visit instead we was very tired and stressed and glad to leave.

Absolutely awful place. Probably the worst pint of Guinness I’ve had the misfortune of tasting. Glass was filthy, guinness was poured with zero effort and was completely sour. Little lad behind the bar was miserable and only communicated via grunts. Avoid.
