Great hotel room a bit rustic and stuffy but what do you expect from a 400 year old house. Room location was still clean. The beer selection was very large and tasty, just like the breakfast..

Not somewhere we would rush back to . Empty room with a pool table sign on under 16’s not allowed to play on it . Food was ok . However we were in and out didn’t have the best atmosphere . Certainly would not like to stay there I can’t see them making any effort for any guests I think it hurt them serving us .

We visited for an early dinner after visiting the nearby Holker Hall and were a little underwhelmed. So, the positives, the pub itself is amazing, it’s in a great location by the river, super quaint building and has loads of character. Now to the not so positives, the service was really questionable. The chap behind the bar was a bit off and not that helpful. We asked about food and were told we could order, albeit reluctantly. I was wary about ordering at this point, but the group wanted to stay, so I played it safe and ordered a few snacks. I opted for some halloumi fries and a portion of ‘home cooked’ chips, they arrived very quickly, which is rarely a good sign and were clearly frozen. They tasted average and looked like they had been fried in oil that needed to be refreshed, pricey too for what you got! Overall a disappointing experience, which is such a shame as we have always enjoyed it when visiting previously.

Unfortunately when we visited the bar it was cash only the card machine wasn't working. The nearest cash machine was in the next village so we couldn't have a drink after our walk.

Popped in before getting the train home after a day walking in the local area. Good range of well kept ales on as usual, with friendly service. Got the children a couple of kids meals which were served reasonably quickly, nice portion size and not too expensive. Outdoor seating area to the front of the pub with the sound of the stream in the background. A locals pub that is friendly and welcoming to visitors - we'll be back!

We had the most beautiful family holiday cottage in 'Folds End' which is very close to the Engine Inn. We headed there on our first night, there was a band playing, and although it was not too busy we enjoyed the evening playing pool and watching the football. A seemingly good start to the weeks holiday. The older barman was helpful and chatty but it became evident that despite advertising meals, actually serving them was not something they wanted to do, they appeared to operate a 'when we can be bothered' policy. I had to return my glass each time I wanted another drink as it saved using a clean one! It was never busy so we returned for dinner on Sunday. Despite a few people dining, we were told they had stopped serving food. This was before 6.30pm. There is nowhere else to eat locally so we had a few packets of scampi fries for tea! We did, however, go in each evening for a drink, as it was the only pub in Cark, but the service and attitude of the young staff member on our last night was awful. So much so that the two other people in the entire pub were even embarrassed! We ordered a drink and asked for the pool cues. He asked for a £5 deposit! There was no one else in the pub and we had been in every night for a week with the kids, he knew us, so it wasn't as if we were a massive risk!. We actually didn't have cash but he refused to let us play without paying the deposit, I asked where the nearest cash machine was as we all wanted to enjoy our last night with a few games of pool. His response was 'nah, there are no cash machines around here, but you can leave your bank card behind the bar' ! Ridiculous, but I had little option, so I gave him the card. At the end of the night we decided on a last round and one last game. My husband ordered a round and asked if he could have a couple of 50p coins. He said 'nah, sorry, I need all the change in the till'. He had earlier made the point that the Engine Inn is a local pub where people don't normally come to watch the football! It was a real shame that the holiday ended being made to feel that a drink and a bit of family time in the Engine Inn is something that is not welcomed by the staff. Sadly, we could not recommend it unless you want to feel that you are a burden to the staff. We would recommend packet scampi fries as these are fortunately available after 6pm! and would also suggest a visit to Cartmel instead, which would provide a warmer welcome and great food and drink.

We decided to book here for the Cartmel races and we are glad we did. The Engine is a beautiful old traditional English pub, sat outside next to the river is very tranquil. Good selection of wines and beers are on offer and the bar area is very cosy. We stayed for one night, our room was a good size and a decent size bed. Our host was exceptional, he really helped us out when we got stuck getting back at night, so with this above and beyond service I rate the Engine 5 stars.. We would definitely stay here again. Great experience...Jon and Jeanette.

Sadly not the place it was, empty, beer (ale) choice limited, damp smell and no food on a Sunday lunchtime. As other village pub has gone, would have expected the Engine to pick up the punters. My guess the village won't have any pubs soon.

Lovely friendly, welcoming, accommodating staff! Went above and beyond for us! Food was absolutely beautiful, we all had the roast dinner. However was not impressed with the owner at all! The weather was awful, cold and wet outside but honestly it was warmer outside than in the pub! The pub has numerous open fires and radiators in there but none of these were on. My friend has terminal cancer and should not be sat anywhere freezing, shivering, with her coat on and warm clothes! She asked the owner could we please have the fire lit and he point blank said no! So I asked could we please have the radiator on instead, and his response was to huff and puff, look at us in disgust like we'd asked for the contents of the till and just said "I guess!" I was absolutely appalled by his attitude! The whole time we were there, the heating wasn't put on, neither were any of the many open fires lit! The staff offered my friend blankets and were so friendly! They shouldn't have to work in those conditions either, short sleeved shirts and freezing temperatures. I think the owner needs to have a long hard look at himself and his attitude and also appreciate the staff he has.

Very Strange ! Where to begin ?,We rang beforehand to ask about a meal and if we needed to book it, they said , they were putting a b.b.q on,We arrived at 6pm after a trip to the races, to be informed that the b.b.q was off because the village had a power outage,But the power was back on at 5 pm,so why no food ?,The bedroom and pub ,both need renovating, bed was lumpy, needed painting and updateing, the bannister rail needed a lick of paint and the pub had an air of tiredness, The following day we went out for a day in the lakes and around teatime rang the pub to ask what was on the menu, they replied, they dont serve food Mondays and Tuesday,?i said were residents in your pub, they replied ,people are entitled to two days off !!,it could be SOO much better, the guy who runs the place doesnt seem to have much idea.

What a great bar in Cark just 2 minutes from the station. The welcome was fantastic, the beer, the location even the weather was perfect, we got an excellent tip from the owners to walk down to cartmel along the path above the road which paid dividends as we got beautiful views and all the fun of the fair as we entered through the car park entrance. So much nicer to spend £5 on a beer and a stroll, than on the bus. So much so we strolled back and had another beer before getting the train back. What a great day and thanks for a brilliant afternoon. I'm sure we will be back to try the rooms and a longer stay.

I booked here on Thursday, 17th August, for me and my 2 children, we were 1 of the 1st ones in, but we didn't mind that. We sat in the restaurant bit, and it was cosy. For starters, we had cheesy garlic bread and halloumi fries with sweet chilli dip. Kids love the garlic bread, and i enjoyed my halloumi fries. Next, my son had a cheese and bacon burger. My daughter had chicken goujons, and i had a steak. Amazing, beautifully cooked, and very good produce of food. We were very full, but we didn't want to leave without pudding so kids had chocolate fudge cake and i had lemon tart, kids were defeated and couldn't finish it but they still enjoyed it and i loved my lemon tart. It's not too heavy. Thank you for a wonderful menu. If we are back in the area, we will definitely be coming back. Definitely recommend this place 100%

We visited for an evening meal having passed by earlierin the day and commented on the location and appearance of the inn. We receivedawarm welcome and offered a table in the bar or restaurant. We chose the bar and setteled at a table for two in lovely highback leather chairs. The food was presented quickly and was of superb quality and included sides that you would normally pay extra for. We could not recommend more highly the Engine inn.

Amanda, the Chef, had an excellent new menu, including home made sticky toffee pudding, which we thoroughly enjoyed. All the dishes were home made and used plenty of fresh vegetables. Any queries we had, were rectified by Jonathan, the owner. We would stay there again, but will remember to book well in advance, to avoid any disappointment.

Good reviews recently, which I’m pleased for them about, but when, oh when will they make the agents toilets acceptable? The tap on the sink must have been knackered for five years at least now. We have visited Cark several times for family holidays, always calling into the engine, we love this place. This weekend we managed to have a child free weekend and stayed in the spacious, well maintained family room (for extra space) our room over looked the main through road of Cark, not an issue with traffic noise, the beck runs along side the pub and that sound is just beautiful. Jonathan went above and beyond making our stay home from home, the loveliest warm welcome and within an hour you feel your sat amongst friends. We were celebrating my husbands 40th as well as our honeymoon, Jonathan went to the trouble of decorating our room and it was just lovely, very much appreciated Lovely breakfast served, great ales and spirits, wines available and the walks from the door step are incredible. We visited years ago and loved the place. Last night was less great. The Cajun chicken burger was tiny with a small cup full of fries. Quite nice but nothing like enough for a main meal. My wife’s gammon and chips was a massive plate of peas to fill the plate and my 13 year old sons cheese burger was comprised blue cheese and a tiny portion of fries. Way overpriced for the quantity. We reckon we got the dregs of what was left over. I knew when I saw the fries in a tea cup there wouldn’t be a decent amount. Less I’d say than you would get at McDonalds.

Secondly we was ordered outside before we got to the bar, no sign of any means of contacting the staff, no instructions on what to do when we entered we were ushered outside. We then had to go back in to order a second drink as no staff were available to take our order outside. The outside looked like it hasn't been painted for years, the inside was dark and dingy. The best thing was that it served my favourite ale which was OK. After reading various good reviews about this place we thought we’d try it out, but the woman in the local shop didn’t fill us with confidence as she said the food is terrible, and my god was she spot on. I got the “beer battered fish and chips” which only tasted of oil and grease. My girlfriend got the “homemade steak and ale pie”. The meat was dry and ridiculously chewy like it had been left out all day, the pastry was terrible, the vegetables weren’t even cooked properly, after biting into the broccoli cold water even came out. And they only took one pie off the order. The landlord is so strange. While we were eating our food he just came and stood near us staring at us not speaking, making you feel very uncomfortable. All in all the pub is terrible and just gives out a bad vibe, would avoid this place at all costs unless you love been disappointed. The photo I have added is how much of the pie and chips were left.

Called into the Engine Inn and was pleasantly surprised. It was very cosy, dog friendly and a log fire on a miserable damp day in the Lakes. Pleasant and friendly staff, lovely food and excellent service.

I managed to stop off here while I was waiting for my train, they had four beers on draft all very good, I ordered a chicken burger and chips, this was the best chicken burger and chips I have ever had, the burger was very tasty, and the chips were the thickest chips I have ever seen, and it was good value as well, what a great place and the staff were fantastic.

Definitivamente volveremos!

Went for a meal on Sunday evening. We popped in first on way back to caravan park for a a drink and asked what time food was served to. A young girl said 7.00, so we came back at 6.30, the landlady then told us that unless we had booked we could not eat, after a short discussion we explained what had happened, and the misunderstanding was soon sorted, we received our meal which was good.

This is a lovely pub,the staff were really friendly and chatty. We have been twice here, once just for drinks and this weekend for food.We had a starter and mains.Starter was nachos and garlic bread then for mains a chicken burger and the Engine burger which was really tasty, the chips were more like roast spuds but they were perfect, really tasty and crispy.

Breakfast was lovely and set us up for the full day. Prefect place to stay with the river running next to the pub was lovely place to relax. Would highly recommend and hope to return soon for a bit longer next time. Thank you

We were staying in the village in July 2019 and visited the pub a few times. It has a friendly atmosphere, staff and locals all friendly and helpful. We didn't eat in the pub but the food being served looked very good.

The visit started off a little badly as we didn't see the landlord who is deaf trying to get our attention as we entered the pub looking for a table for 9 people. The food is great the salad dressing and tartar sauce that comes with the fish and chips are the best I have ever eaten, the steak pie is very meaty the prices seem fair for the area. Well done

Called here after the steam gathering and what a change from the last time we visited it’s clearly in the right hands lovely friendly staff. lovely and clean in the bar area and facilities considering it was standing room only for some people. The menu looked appealing so we will be back for a meal one day the drinks were on the expensive side but the atmosphere made up for it . Plenty of outside seating for the nicer day it was all in all a lovely little place well worth a visit I say

Volveremos - gracias?

We visited on Easter Sunday, and the pub was very busy. This didn’t stop the staff making every effort to make you feel welcome, the staff were a credit to the licensee, a couple of things went wrong but we’re sorted with such politeness and courtesy. One man spilt o full pot of salt on his fish, and without a question of fault, the meal was exchanged, in good time. We watched from another table, a though, what professional customer service. Our dinners were hot delicious and plenty, we would highly recommend the pub for meals and drinks, and look forward to our next visit.

We only wanted a coffee and a cake as it was only 11.15 AM but had to queue for 20 minutes behind people ordering hot food and spending ages deciding what they wanted at the last minute Nice stuff but it needs organising a lot better Guess as its volunteer run it depends very much on what the staffing is on the day They need a separate area for those just having coffee etc rather than a meal

We were very disappointed! We like to support local businesses so were determined to give it a try despite some poor reviews. Sadly both beers were poor and the welcome was very lackluster, to say the least. We won't be back.

Lovely setting to relax and enjoy the views having lunch or just a drink. A few had lunch said was nice. Me personally thought expensive for soup but enjoyed my coffee. Worth it for the views.
