Tried here for an evening meal as it was the first place we came to after parking in the car park in town. The place was busy and welcoming but the food and service was underwhelming. Looking at the reviews I think we hit on an off night as our food was lackluster, nice pie of the day, piping hot but sadly the peas, mash and chips were tepid at best. Service was a bit slow but they were busy so possibly expected but had to ask for menus and drinks after we had been seated for about 10 minutes.

Unfortunately a not so great experience. Pre booked a table and placed in the basement which has zero atmosphere and nobody but us. The food ordering was lengthy and we waited over an hour for the food to arrive. Not ideal with tired children! Appreciated that the place was busy, but multiple mistakes on the food order, and there was no interactions or engagement from the staff at all. The food quality was ok, decent portions but due to how busy the place was, the standards were missed on this occasion. Shame as we were looking forward to visit, however came away not feeling great. Unfortunately nothing positive to call out!

Honestly this place was like a nursery, screaming kids, music played out loud of ipads and blasting music. Really not a nice atmosphere at all, just wanted out after about ten minutes. Food was OK but roasts claimed to come with a whole slew of things that weren't then included in the "Vegan Roast". Didn't really fill us up. The drink we ordered was also incorrect.

Seasonal early meal offers yesterday it was 4pm until 6.30pm 2 course for £16.95 not sure of the cost but you can also have 3 courses.. Good value for money. We got there after 4.30pm by the time we finished our meal the place was full. Recommend going early rather than later. We had pie of the day shown on specials board as chicken, ham & leek.. Was packed full of delicious chunky meat n leek.. Would recommend! Also the chips crispy outside soft in the middle, mushy peas and a jug of gravy.. One of the nicest meals out we have had in a while.. and we are fussy. We opted for dessert I had apple n rhubarb crumble with ginger ice cream ( ice cream was a bit of a small portion) but I wasn't complaining as it was plenty and also delicious. Hubby had sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. He ate the lot. We wouldnt hesitate in returning. Lovely friendly staff very attentive even when under pressure. Service charge added onto your bill.

Really friendly local pub in Bowness with plenty of eating space and seating out the front in good weather. Classic pub fayre. Generous portions and varying pies of the day. Visited mid week off peak and it was quiet. But Bowness is popular so you might want to book in full season. Kaylar served us and she was really lovely and attentive as was her colleague with the cool plaited beard.

Just spent 3 very lovely days in Bowness and this was the first place we visited for a quick lunch when we arrived. It wasn't a great experience but thankfully was the only part of our trip where we found food mediocre/ok and service lacking and downright rude. We are always very polite in restaurants and bars - frankly those working in hospitality deserve a bloody medal. As children of a cleaner, a coach builder and a toothpaste maker we have no sense of entitlement whatsoever! It was therefore somewhat surprising to receive service like we did in response to a very polite request. Whoever hired the man with the beard decoration (who I suspect is the same delightful individual other reviews refer to and who 'served' us) really needed to check that he wanted to work in hospitality where you kind of need to speak to people in a way that is polite and patient unless of course there is good reason not to. The rest of the staff were lovely - courteous and friendly but this man really needs to find another more satisfying vocation in life because customer service is clearly not it. Thankfully that was the only part of our trip where we had any reason to complain, all our other meals and experiences were fantastic.

My wife and I walked in and were met by a member of staff in the middle of a phone call (absolutely fine), however, what would have been the courteous response from the particular individual would have been to acknowledge that he had customers and either finish the call or tell us he would be with us as soon as he could! Neither happened, in fact, said individual turned his back and ignored us. We promptly left and spent our money in a more deserving establishment.

Great pub good staff food was good I had pie of the day with mash peas and gravy such a shame you only get a tiny portion so disappointing not worth what it costs how much does a bit of peas and mash cost it felt like a kids portion at an adult price there was about a spoon full of peas in a tiny pot and a tiny pot of gravy to go with the spoon full of mash would have given 5 stars if it was a decent amount of food

Displeasure, disgust, disappointment. All of those I experienced during my experience there. Firstly, we came here as an expensive treat for my mother as it was her birthday. On arrival an ignorant man reluctantly greeted us. He took us to a semi clean table after 10 minutes of waiting. He told us the wait for food would be at least 30 minutes which was okay. Any time a person walked past the table violently shook causing my elderly grandma to panic. The shame. The noise of barking dogs and loud children really helped the atmosphere. The meal arrived after about 45 minutes of hunger and pain. This is when the disappointment began. What I thought was a simple, easy meal of fish and chips, obviously was not. The mushy peas - cold. The fish - dry. The chips - basically nonexistent. Although, due to our starvation, we ate it. This torturous meal had to be topped by something, in this case - the pudding. We asked the waitress how long the pudding would take and she said she'd make it herself. How lovely of her we thought. After 10 minutes we had no brownie, so we went to the counter to pay and tell her we no longer wanted it. She straight away said no - we'd already ordered and we couldn't take it off. So, we waited. After 5 minutes she came out with a large box. We were filled with hope, a sense of happiness that we'd finally be given something good. My grandmother opened the box and our hearts dropped and filled with emptiness. I felt like the Grinch with a heart 3 sizes too small. In the box sat £7.50 worth of something resembling a poo. A teaspoon of crushed brownie with some honey drizzled on top. Maybe we could at least have a spoon to eat the monstrosity with? No way - why would I have expected such a delux item from them. The lady replied with a rude shrug and plainly said no and that we were being unkind. Overall, thanks for ruining my mother's birthday and taking £65 plus a non-negotiable tip from my grandmother who spent her hard earned money just to bring some joy into my poor mother's eyes.

After eating here on several occasions, I decided to take my daughter for a birthday lunch. We were met with a very sullen man who told us that we would have to wait at least half an hour for food. That's OK we said, we were asked to be patient and take a seat. When the food arrived (fish sandwich with mushy peas) the peas were stone cold, and there were only about 10 chips. We then asked the waitress how long pudding would take as we had to catch a bus. Straight away she said, I'll do it myself. After 10 mins we said that we had to go, the waitress said you've ordered it now so I'm not taking it off the bill. She put the pudding in a box, about a spoonful of chocolate brownie with cream. I asked for a spoon. No spoons she said. How are we to eat it I asked. She shrugged her shoulders and called us rude. All in all it was a very disappointing experience. We also noticed that we had paid a service charge. What a shame, after over 5 years of visiting this establishment, never again. £65 worth of disappointment.

The drinks and staff were fine, but the food was terrible. My husband ordered schnitzel which was ok, but slightly over cooked. I had the shepherd's pie, when it arrived I was surprised as it was a small dish containing the shepherd's pie, with a side of pickled red cabbage. It didn't look much for the price I paid, but I had hopes it would be big on flavour. How wrong I was!! It was very dry, with 70% potato and very little base, which had little to no gravy. Whether when first made it was nice and juicy, then ruined on re heating I will never no. I did complain and was issued a refund without question!! Such a shame as its a lovely pub.

Went in for tea on sunday, if you want something other than a roast - don’t bother Both of us had the beef roast, the plate was 80% cabbage, a couple of carrots and parsnips and 2 tiny potatos. The beef was sliced so thin, it belonged on a sandwich in a school canteen. In fairness, the yorkshire pudding was lovely and the meal looked good on the plate. I visited last april, the food was great and the portions were huge, however it seems they have halved portions since then? Don’t recommend unless you have the appetite of a small child, essentially paid £17 for a plate of cabbage haha

Honestly, I have never been met with such aggression in any establishment. I was taken aback. I hadn't even asked any 'special' requests at this point. When I did, of course, I got no satisfaction. We ate as a couple here on Friday night. It was very busy and staff seemed a little stressed as their card machine was down so everyone had to pay via cash. Luckily they told us this on arrival so after a quick dash to the cash machine, it was no problem. A few pros and cons: +We hadn’t reserved but were quickly shown to a table. +The decor is lovely and very tastefully done. +Good range of dishes on the menu, including vegetarian options. +We both opted for a pie. One, steak and ale and the other a cheese and onion. Both delicious! -Food seemed to take quite some time to come out even though by this point the dining area wasn’t very busy. -We both thought the portion size could have been bigger e.g. some fresh vegetables rather than a pot of mushy peas. It all tasted lovely just wish there had been more for the price. -After some larger groups had left the dining area fell very quiet, some background music would be good. Overall a pleasant meal and a special mention for the ginger bearded fellow behind the bar, he was very friendly 😊

We came back for an evening meal almost a year after we had been and enjoyed a lunch here. We were only in bowness for 3 nights and I wish we had chosen somewhere else to eat. The Cumberland sausage was an embarrassing attempt at a normal portion size. The mash and veg underneath it was obviously reheated or kept warm for some time. How does one tablespoon of mash and a spoon of carrots equate to an evening meal costing upwards of £17?? It was embarrassing. My partner has this and I had the burger, I felt so bad he was starving I gave him half of mine. We were asked at the bar when paying the bill if everything was ok and we said no, not really, it was a tiny portion of food. The poorly trained young lady behind the bar didn’t even address it, she just exclaimed “oh…” pathetic for a business. I don’t know who owns this place but they’ve clearly just employed staff at minimum wage and customer enjoyment/service is way down on their list of priorities. In contrast we went to the pub across the road and it was way better value and I think they will be in business way longer than the flying pig! Can you tell we won’t be returning??

Had a really good lunch here last year so decided to come back this year and had an evening meal. Massively disappointed by the small plate portion masquerading as a main meal. Cumberland sausage on a small spoonful of mash, a few carrots lazily added and a splash of gravy. Also there was no veg substitute option offered and they had a poor selection of ales. Place has gone downhill and clearly trading on a previous reputation, rather than testing if they’re value for money. Staff were also ill equipped and disinterested in my response of no, when asked if everything was ok as I was met with a blank look. Plenty of other places in the town to eat and suggest anyone who wants an appropriately portioned and quality evening meal crosses the road to the Albert.

We came twice this Bank Holiday to meet family and friends as we like this place from previous experiences. Unfortunately, this once very nice pub with good service and helpful staff, failed on this occasion. Toilets were poorly maintained i.e. door locks and toilet paper missing. We attempted to order food just before 2pm (menu stated serving until 3pm), only to be told that they take no more orders as kitchen is too busy. This affected our plans. In addition, waitress refused to switch on heaters in the beer garden. We were told that they can only be on when outside temperature was under the certain level. Please note that it was 11 C and we were in the shade with no place to sit inside! After pointing this out to the waitress, she shouted a rude comment: “I am not cold!”. Overall, it seems that the place is badly managed. We will probably give it another chance for old time sake, but we might avoid it if continues to deteriorate.

Great hotel room a bit rustic and stuffy but what do you expect from a 400 year old house. Room location was still clean. The beer selection was very large and tasty, just like the breakfast..

“Let’s stop for ice cream” we said. “It’ll be a treat for the kids” we said. It wasn’t. Honestly we nearly lost the will to live. Not the fault of the people serving but the convoluted menu of ice cream sundaes and milkshakes which each took about a week to make. We only wanted ice cream and were waiting around 45 minutes which honestly just wasn’t worth it. It wasn’t just us as several groups abandoned the queue while we were waiting. Need a fast-track queue for customers wanting ice cream only. Won’t be returning.

Came here for some food and drinks for a joint birthday ,my 20th and my friend’s 18th ,and it was so lovely! the man on the bar was kind and smiley and made great cocktails despite being very new to his role and only making a handful off the menu so far. The food was lovely ,although we definitely underestimated the size 😂overall it was the best birthday and the best service and I will definitely be coming again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
