Great night from start to finish. Only 3 front of house staff working the bar, clearing/waiting on tables, and taking orders.. but you'd never have known it! Service was emaculate. Food was fantastic! Chefs must have been under pressure with it being a really busy Saturday night, but the food was perfection. A few allergies in the group and these were not an issue when ordering, everything was checked beforehand to make sure we could eat it without any issues. Will definitely recommend and be back in the future! Thank you!!

We ate as a couple here on Friday night. It was very busy and staff seemed a little stressed as their card machine was down so everyone had to pay via cash. Luckily they told us this on arrival so after a quick dash to the cash machine, it was no problem. A few pros and cons: +We hadn’t reserved but were quickly shown to a table. +The decor is lovely and very tastefully done. +Good range of dishes on the menu, including vegetarian options. +We both opted for a pie. One, steak and ale and the other a cheese and onion. Both delicious! -Food seemed to take quite some time to come out even though by this point the dining area wasn’t very busy. -We both thought the portion size could have been bigger e.g. some fresh vegetables rather than a pot of mushy peas. It all tasted lovely just wish there had been more for the price. -After some larger groups had left the dining area fell very quiet, some background music would be good. Overall a pleasant meal and a special mention for the ginger bearded fellow behind the bar, he was very friendly 😊

Food is ok. we looking for the early bird menu between 4-5:30, and the staff not good service for me to be honest. we came for early bird time , but when we get bill, they charge the full price for each meal. and after we told them wrong bill cuz we order for earlybird , they looks not happy and whisper and glance us . after they change the bill still same price for service charge , so bad the expirence . wont back again ,Cause no sincerity from the locals. We came back for an evening meal almost a year after we had been and enjoyed a lunch here. We were only in bowness for 3 nights and I wish we had chosen somewhere else to eat. The Cumberland sausage was an embarrassing attempt at a normal portion size. The mash and veg underneath it was obviously reheated or kept warm for some time. How does one tablespoon of mash and a spoon of carrots equate to an evening meal costing upwards of £17?? It was embarrassing. My partner has this and I had the burger, I felt so bad he was starving I gave him half of mine. We were asked at the bar when paying the bill if everything was ok and we said no, not really, it was a tiny portion of food. The poorly trained young lady behind the bar didn’t even address it, she just exclaimed “oh…” pathetic for a business. I don’t know who owns this place but they’ve clearly just employed staff at minimum wage and customer enjoyment/service is way down on their list of priorities. In contrast we went to the pub across the road and it was way better value and I think they will be in business way longer than the flying pig! Can you tell we won’t be returning??

Had a really good lunch here last year so decided to come back this year and had an evening meal. Massively disappointed by the small plate portion masquerading as a main meal. Cumberland sausage on a small spoonful of mash, a few carrots lazily added and a splash of gravy. Also there was no veg substitute option offered and they had a poor selection of ales. Place has gone downhill and clearly trading on a previous reputation, rather than testing if they’re value for money. Staff were also ill equipped and disinterested in my response of no, when asked if everything was ok as I was met with a blank look. Plenty of other places in the town to eat and suggest anyone who wants an appropriately portioned and quality evening meal crosses the road to the Albert.

having worked in a greasy spoon cafe for 3 years i understand how it all works, hot holding pretty much everything unless you are cooking eggs to order in a oil pan and frying hash brown to order too. but sausages and bacon are usually hot hold however it was not busy when i came at about 10 o clock yet the eggs had shells in them and had that snotty white look implying they were raw. hash browns were soggy and the toast was clearly done on a grill and arrived very wet and soggy. i wouldn’t come again as i don’t think it was the best breakfast you can get around this little town.

Absolutely not worth coming here for the food. I ordered a superfood salad with halloumi as an extra. It was missing the quinoa and almonds and generally what was served was a poor excuse for what was claimed to be a superfood salad. A pile of soggy, tasteless couscous and about 10 pomegranate seeds. The dish included 2 florets of overcooked broccoli and 2 lumps of halloumi indelicately dropped on top of the couscous and rendered barely edible with dollops of some kind of mustard dressing rather than the lemon dressing that was promised on the menu. My husband had ribs on which was very little meat. This place seems to ride on location, serving a captive audience of tourists poor quality food with no need to work towards securing repeat business. Go somewhere else! One thing that this place did have going for it - there was a young boy serving and he really did graft! So helpful and hard-working.

An otherwise nice meal was spoiled by being told we couldn't have tap water because of a UK wide drinking water issue. This seems to be a mystery to the rest of the UK, or, in fact, Bowness. Additionally, the bill included a service charge (unusual for a pub) and they requested a tip on top.

Food was very tasty, reasonably priced for the area, staff very friendly and the service was quick. The only downside was that we paid a £30 deposit which we was told wasn't coming off the bill and was to be refunded by head office, this doesn't make sense, as you pay the deposit expecting it to come off the bill, hence the 4 stars and not the full 5 stars.

For those who wants to order their EARLY BIRDS, don't only ask the waiter girls, ask the cashier. They CHANGED the early bird timing by pen in their menu from 6.30pm to 6pm. We reached around 5.48pm and seated around 5.50pm. The waiters seemed to ignore you (we tried to raise/wave our hands several times) until near 6pm. When they finally wanted to take order, we asked the girl whether we could still enjoy the early bird set and she said 'yes'. After dinner, the cashier told us that we could not get the early bird set because the order timing in their system passed 6pm. The ambience of the pub is good and relaxing. The location is strategic, near the lake. Most of the foods were delicious, the mussel starter was very good with only 1-2 unopened. The chicken rotisserie was a good one. The burger patties were moist and tasty. The sausage was good and I liked its sides. The pork was tender and could be counted as the best dish that we had in this pub. We had drinks, lunch and dinner for 2-3 days and loved the food, the bar, and eating on the deck overlooking the river. The scenery is terrific and the remodeled decor and deck were very comfortable. There were problems and confusion with food service everyday we were there, but the remodeling had just been completed, so some reorganizing was be expected. At times we saw pretty aggravated staff members trying their best. It was often hard to get any service at all on the deck as the bartender was expected to wait on tables (forget about clearing and cleaning them) as well as tend bar. I know running a restaurant is tough, and hiring seasonal staff must be even worse. I have no suggestions about how to improve, other than to say hire more staff!!! We very much enjoyed the food and drinks, and the atmosphere. We never did get to eat in the newly remodeled dining room. There was never enough staff to wait tables, but it couldn't have been better than the deck. However, had the weather been rainy or cold, this review might be quite different! Cheers. I do hope we are able to return some time.

Very disappointed, expensive food and drink and you have to serve yourself, even down to getting your own cutlery. Bar staff don’t seem busy enough to justify the lack of table service. Food was bland and very expensive, Thai red curry was tasteless and the sportsman platter tasted like it was reheated food, came out very fast. We used to love this pub but something has changed recently and we won’t be back. *updated* I am not too “grand and important” to not get my own cutlery , and have been to many lovely casual pubs in the Lakes, but if I’m paying £60+ I want a decent meal and won’t be spending it on the rubbish food and drink that was served in your pub thanks. Not a chance that food was fresh being brought out 5 mins after ordering and the empty tables spoke volumes. Maybe spend more time improving your food and service and less time insulting honest reviewers and you may have a chance of not going under. I for one will make sure I tell everyone not to bother wasting their money here.

Shambolic Management, I have never been in a place where the staff worked so hard to turn customers away on the pretence that they were short staffed, I was appalled at the way they dealt with an elderly gentleman who visited the pub with his daughter to make a booking for dinner, the staff flatly refused to take a booking and told him that he'd have to turn up and take pot luck that there was availability, disgusting. A shame really because the beer was good and the food was ok, but the bar manager, thought he was doing customers a favour by accommodating them. He and the waitress were leaving to return to London, she was very pleasant by the way. Liked the atmosphere of the place, but the way customers were treated was a disgrace, I've never seen so many people spoken to in such a rude manor, hopefully his replacement will have a desire to be pleasant and accommodating.
