The Sun Inn in Bassetlaw

This venue is set on the corner of an A road that you would pass by if you didn't live in the village. DON'T pass by, you are missing a rare treat if you do Not your average pub food. This pub food is cooked to perfection with nothing too much trouble. Waiting staff on our visit were attentive (but not too much), knew what beers were on the pump without having to go back to look . Food was well above your average and plenty of it, we couldn't finish it. Go and try it you will be pleased.

I was invited to the Sun Inn with two local friends for dinner having ventured from Kent to Bawtry. My fish and chips with mushy peas was fabulous. A lovely environment and jolly helpful staff. I visited the Sun Inn, with family, for a Sunday roast. I was so disappointed. Initially, as it was my first time there, I liked the interior and the staff taking our orders were lovely. We ordered the ultimate roast dinner costing £25 each. I had a few issues with the meal. There were four adults at the table and they only brought out enough vegetables, that they usually serve for two people. We did ask for more and they were kind enough to give us an extra portion. The vegetables were not hot, just barely lukewarm. We ordered cauliflower cheese and stuffing for the extra sides as these do not come with the meal, which is surprising considering how expensive the meal costs. They charge extra £4 for cauliflower cheese and an extra £4 for stuffing. The cauliflower cheese was served piping hot and was very nice however the stuffing was served as round discs that were so hard I could’ve used them as hockey pucks. If a person has chicken or turkey on their dinner then stuffing should come as standard. The pork had no crackling and was extremely bland. The beef was extremely rare and I sent it back to the kitchen and requested a fresh piece that was a little more cooked, they returned the same said piece of beef, not quite sure what they done to it (looked like it had been microwaved) but I certainly wasn’t eating it. It looked awful. I had one roast potato that wasn’t even crispy and a very overdone, dark, Yorkshire pudding. Altogether a great disappointment considering the price. Then I requested the bill which totalled £125. I took the bill to the bar and requested to speak to the manager. The Barman gestured to a man that was stood at a table next to me that I would like to speak to him. I assumed this person was the manager. He then proceeded to carry on with what he was doing momentarily making me wait as if I was the least important person in the establishment. I feel he did this because he overheard me talking to the Barman about not being happy with the meal and requesting a discount. The manager went behind the bar and talked to me across the bar. He asked what the problem was and I explained to him all about the meal issues and that I was extremely disappointed and he said what would you like me to do? I suggested that maybe he could give some kind of discount as the meal was very expensive considering how disappointed and unhappy we were and how little we had eaten. He took the receipt from me, pressed some buttons on the till and gave me back the receipt where he had deducted a total of £4 making the bill now £121. I felt insulted. When I was explaining to the Manager about the issues with the meal he tried to question what I was saying, for example, I explained to him that the Yorkshire puddings were burnt and he said that I was trying to say they were black and I said no, they were very dark and overdone, and he said, they’re just crispy. When I explained to him that my beef was extremely rare, and that I had sent it back and requested a fresh piece, and that the same piece had been returned to me, he said that was not true. I told him again that i knew it was the same piece that had been returned to me and he insisted that was incorrect. I realised I was not going to win this argument because he was basically trying to call me a liar. Anyway, I did not eat it as it looked awful, like a piece of rubber, which is why I assumed it had been microwaved. He was not in the slightest bit Interested that I wasn’t happy with my meal. I suggested that he should see how much leftovers were returned to the kitchen as not one of our plates was clear. I was extremely surprised that I had been spoken to in this way and that he had come across as quite intimidating, with suggestions that I was not telling the truth. In hindsight, I should have inisisted that I was not paying for my meal as they had not fulfilled their side of the bargain, which is to present me with a decent hot meal that is worth £25. I would have said , it wasn’t worth anything more than £10 or £11. I go to a local, 3 AA rosette awarded restaurant, that charges £31 for 2 courses. The Sun Inn has no awards, which is fine, but don’t charge prices, as if you do. I don’t mind paying any price for a meal that is worth it.

1st visit here, not sure why only 4 out of 5 reviews.... the back garden is lovely ... but the food was fantastic. . Really impressed... Barnsley chop ... and tortellini Highly recommend

We went for a later afternoon/early evening meal and it was superb. As it was far too hot for a heavy meal we opted for a salad and what a good choice that was! The drinks range is good though would like to see a wider choice of low-alcohol or zero drinks but this is quite a new emerging drinking preference. It is definitely worth a visit, the staff are attentive and friendly and the food superb!

Great place for either a quick pint or a meal. The staff are always professional and the warm pork scratchings are fabulous, not to be missed!

Last night we went to the Sun Inn, at Everton near Bawtry - another ‘new’ venue for us, and only half an hours drive away. This pretty gastro-pub comes well recommended by our local area groups, and we were most impressed! Our menu choices were soft shelled crab, and Scotch egg to start. Main courses were whole plaice, sea trout, lamb burger and Caesar salad. We couldn’t resist trying the desserts and we picked cherry Bakewell Eaton mess, and cookie dough brownie! The Sun has some great menu choices, there were lots of dishes we would like to try, so a repeat visit is certainly on the cards very soon! And it’s a very sociable venue - we were soon chatting to the ladies on the table next to us!

We had a fantastic meal at The Sun Inn last night. We were welcomed by a friendly staff member and shown to our table. The drinks order came quickly and we studied the menu. 3 of us had Steak and Ale Pie and the others had Chicken Salsa Burger, Fish and Chips and Barnsley Chop Everyone said the food was delicious and it was well presented. The pudding order consisted mainly of ice cream Sundaes of various flavours. These were great as well. Overall it was a lovely evening wonderful food and it was the best pie I've had. The staff were attentive, efficient and friendly. This was the second visit and we'll definitely return.

First time we have been and it was such a lovely experience. The pub itself is welcoming, clean and we loved all the artwork, decor and quirky toilet fittings. The staff are lovely and the gentleman who served us was polite, helpful and welcoming. The food was tasty, well cooked and presented and there is a good choice on the menu. Our third visit and following two 5 star sit downs,,this one saw a poor main beef dinner. Service is excellent. Venue is modern and cosy, but they just need to focus a bit more on the end product(mainly lunch dinners) Probably a blip. We will return

I just wanted to say me and my date had a brilliant experience at The Sun Inn, from start to finish the staff was polite, welcoming and last but not least, the food was absolutely top notch! I had the Sun Inn Smash Burger and my date had the Haddock and chips, both portions was very well sized (which helps because I’m a massive foodie) and very reasonably priced too for what we received! Oh almost forgot to mention it was washed down with a few drinks that were also very good and served with kindness and politeness. We will definitely be visiting on another date day/night again! 😍 Thank you to all at The Sun Inn!

Had a fantastic family Sunday lunch with 11 adults, four generations including my 3 month old great niece. Pub looked lovely on entering, great service at the bar for pre lunch drinks & a good atmosphere. None of us had starters, we all went for Sunday lunch apart from my nephew who had Moroccan chicken burger & chips. All enjoyed their meals, lovely home cooked hot food, gravy & veg served separately, ordered cauli cheese as extra. Service was spot on, friendly and professional. Lovely outside area, which I imagine would be fab in Summer. Would definitely visit again. Don't normally go out for Sunday lunch as I cook a good one at home. However, probably one of the best Sunday lunches we have eaten in a restaurant.

Lovely food & great service. Also dog friendly with a fab atmosphere (music playing and buzzing with people) is a double bonus!

Enjoyed a lovely lunch with a group of friends at the Sun. We had a variety of dishes and we all agreed they were delicious and beautifully presented. The service is always friendly and efficient. I also visit regularly with my elderly mum and nothing is too much trouble to accommodate her, making space for her wheelchair and offering smaller portions. Much appreciated!

We’ve been here a few times now and the staff are always extremely friendly / helpful. The pub is always clean and tidy with a great atmosphere, and the food is of a high quality! We will definitely be coming back (with the dog too!) 🙂

Fantastic service, friendly staff and incredible food. We don’t usually use pubs for meals we usually find them disappointing however; The Sun Inn Everton is far above pub grub! It’s our third time visiting The Sun Inn, we travel from Walesby near Mkt Rasen that’s how good the food is. Fish and chips to die for. Thank you to all staff.

What a gem of a place to find for a really lovely lunchtime visit with a relaxing atmosphere. They offered a really good choice of excellent dishes at a reasonable price and plenty of it. Service was great and the meal never felt rushed. One of those places that you want to return to.

In the summer months the site has fantastic seating area located directly outside where food and drinks are served.
