Had an excellent tea time break with a pot of tea and a slice of cake each. The waiter was very polite and helpful.

Myself and my husband went to the boat on a Monday evening for some food . We haven’t been here for a few years but what an improvement from last time we went.

This is a very special place, but I’d hate to think that it became even more popular or bookings would probably be a tad too hard to arrange! My wife, Helen, and I, together with our niece, Anna, have just enjoyed a wonderful lunch at The White Hart Inn to celebrate a memorable family occasion. Our first choice of hostelry, about 10 miles away, had no convenient “slots”, so this West Stockwith eatery was next in line. How lucky we were that one venue’s “sorry, we’re full” status made way for this out-of-the-way gem beside the rivers Idle and Trent just a stone’s throw from the A161 at Misterton. I’m told by locals that hostess Katie - I do hope that’s not a sexist term - excels at what she does and, on this showing, their praise is more than justified. Helen and I, whose golden wedding is on November 23rd, have been vegetarian for almost 30 years and find the choice of menu at most restaurants to be disappointing. We need not have worried today. At least four items appealed to us both and our eventual selection, ordered after a sip or two of Guinness and Sauvignon Blanc, turned out to be perfection personified. Having told Katie of my penchant for battered onion rings, I was astonished when my main course of veggie-sausages, mash, gravy and green vegetables was accompanied by the largest helping of BORs that I’ve ever encountered. Indeed, there were so many that I (almost) gave half to Helen - who had chosen a butternut squash and almond pie - and Anna, whose carnivorous preference embraced ale-soaked steak, chips and mushy peas. Delicious their selections all were, apparently. For desserts - just or otherwise - Katie and her colleagues in the kitchen had evidently misjudged the size of serving spoon. The portions of cheesecake and lemon sponge, complete with a choice of home-made ice cream, custard et al, were of such a gargantuan nature that I felt the sudden urge to consult Specsavers. Thank goodness for the invention of high-strength, cholesterol-lowering statins… And, with tongue firmly in cheek, I note the extremely low cost of living nowadays and the imminent doubling of pensioners’ winter fuel payments. Ouch! The bill for all this excess, including alcohol and coffee, was a shade over £80 for the three of us, probably almost half what Helen’s late father, Harry, paid for a certain wedding breakfast in 1974. Adjusted for inflation, The White Hart’s prices offer superb value for money. And, with Katie and friends at the helm, this particular establishment proved to be no mere runner-up when the first choice venue had “no room at the inn”. I’d recommend this riverside restaurant to everyone. But, in the interests of selfishness, I do hope my views are ignored by the vast majority of potential diners!
