The Boat Inn straddles an old stone bridge, below which narrow boats drift slowly by on the canal. In summer months many barge travellers moor their water homes and stop off at this inn for lunch.

Eeek!

Me and husband decided to try here as we visited a few years ago and had a lovely meal, we both chose a steak meal and like previously was a good meal, was very quiet and peaceful, but tables were really sticky had obviously been cleaned with a not so clean cloth and cutlery were not to clean either, but food was good.

The place is an idyllic setting next to the Chesterfield Canal, with a great play area for children. If they could replace the chef and train the waiting staff they just might get it right for diners to enjoy a meal.On entry to the pub we stood and waited for someone to 'meet and greet' and show us where we were sitting. Ten minutes later I asked a waitress who then checked her list and told us in which part of the pub our table was. (The games room) Having never been there before, we wandered down to the other end where the pool table was and sat down. A waitress took our order for two carvery meals, and returned 20 minutes later to say that it was ready for us to go and collect. The people on the next table waited a further twenty minutes for theirs. My wife is coeliac (wheat and gluten free) so we took our own Yorkshire pudding and gravy, which must have been handled with the same utensils or hands that had handled other items. The 'chef' did some special roast potatoes for her so that there was no contamination from the ordinary coated ones. These turned out to be cut-up potatoes that were deep fat fried. Of course, everything else had been deep fried in the same pan, so cross contamination was a cert. Then he must have rolled them in black pepper so they burned your mouth out! I had the ordinary roast potatoes and they too had been rolled in pepper! When I make roast potatoes they are cooked in the oven, in a pan, in a small amount of oil or fat. Then I turn them half way through cooking. Deep pan fried potatoes are basically lumpy chips, and they taste nothing like roast potatoes. They taste like lumpy chips! All in all, like I said earlier, train the waiting staff and replace the chef, or just be a pub serving expensive beer.

Dinned here last night, and can honestly say its one of the best meals we've had in ages. I had the meat and potato pie, served with fresh vegetables and HOME MADE chips, the pie was filled with meat and large pieces of potato. My partner had the seafood platter, {must be pre ordered}, when it came I thought it was a double portion, a large platter filled with are least 7 different varieties

We arrived for drinks only to find a dead and lifeless pub with what seemed to be a family inside running/eating/watching the bar area when asked to be served was greeted with a young lad with glasses who gave us menus that looked like a young girls school folder. Not very professional, we then opened our menus to find the prices astronomical a standard burger £9.95 and then with the choice of adding bacon for £1.95 Or chilli for £2.50 we quickly closed are menus paid are tab and quickly left the table next to us complained 3 times in the space we had one drink fair to say a bullet well dodged.

Really busy at Sunday lunch but we were given a table in the bar. First up to the carvery and the turkey very poor with small portions. We paid with our order then as we were leaving the car park the landlady came running over asking "Have you paid?" I insisted on showing her my receipt (which she'd given me) and drove off in disgust! Won't be coming back which is a disappointment as we'd tried a couple of times to visit

This is a place we used visit frequently many years ago. Today we were visiting friends near by so called in to get refreshed with drink and food. On the way home.Great lunch menu we had battered fish with chips and mushy peas. Followed by home cooked Apple pie with cream and a Bread and Butter pudding with custard. All washed down with a pint of BB real ale. And a lager and lime. Excellent cooked food well presented with smiling staff. The bill was a surprise also, much less than expected. All in all decor inside clean and fresh and great seating garden area beside the canal running close bye. Will visit friends more offers from now on with this pub to look forward too.

We used to use The Boat quite regularly for lunch as it is a pleasant canal side pub with a good atmosphere which offered good food and beer. We were saddened when we found it closed on one visit early this year. However we discovered that it has re opened under new family ownership so decided to visit for lunch. We were not disappointed. It seems that they have the services of the same chef as before (who made some of the best beer battered fish I have ever had). We had an enjoyable lunch with good pub food at a good price. The main menu seemed a bit limited compared to what used to be on offer, but that may be just my memory, but there is also a specials board from which I chose. It was good. The new owners have only been there for two weeks so there is still, I think, a little settling down to do on some of the small details of service (no menus on the table or bar and almost 10 minutes before we got one - there only seemed to be one copy?). However that was not really a major issue overall and everybody was very friendly and helpful. We think that the new owners deserve to succeed and we hope they do. We will certainly go back and think other people will. Recommended.

We are a family of 4 & just popped in at 6:30pm on Wednesday evening for some tea...We walked into the bar & asked if they were serving meals & they were.. So we ordered our drinks.. My Diet Pepsi had no syrup so the guy behind the bar said he would sort it & bring it over as well as 1 other fruit shoot as there was only 1 in the fridge.. After a few minutes he came to tell me there was no Diet Pepsi so I asked for the Pepsi max which he said he didn't have that either & would full fat be ok, I don't like full fat so I had a lemonade instead.. We sat down & no one came over to give us a menu, after about 10 minutes I asked for a menu.. Then after another 10 minutes no one came to take our order so I went to the bar to place the order & they said someone would come over & take the order..It seemed to be bike night & not sure who the tall guy is but he worked there but spent more time in the car park taking pictures of the motorbikes with his son than serving customers.. The waitress said it "got a bit manic" when 10 people walked in.. The chef kept standing at the door waiting for someone to take food to the tables, all the staff looked scruffy & really came across like they didn't have a clue what they were doing! When the food came it was nice & seemed fresh & was tasty... I had the gammon, my partner had the hunters chicken, our children had the fish & chips & the tomato pasta. This pub is in an absolute prime location, they benefit from having a great beer garden & the pub is beautifully decorated... I remember this pub being in its prime serving 800 Sunday carvery meals every Sunday & it having a great reputation.I really hope the staff get themselves organised.. As we would be regulars!

It's a few months since I'd visited the Boat Inn at Hayton - and since that visit the pub has changed hands. I am happy to report that all is good, the Landlord (Roo) is a true gent - he's the big bloke with the beard! and it looks as though it's a proper family affair with his wife and young son. Nice people. Before visiting I tried to phone and check the website to make a booking - the phone number had been changed and the website was the 'old' site with incorrect information. Told Roo about this and he is having a difficult time sorting the website out and putting the new details up, as the old owners are still hosting the site. I hope this gets resolved quickly; mind they have only just moved in. My personal recommendation: *Just turn up*.Upon arrival we were greeted by several very pleasant staff who couldn't do enough to help. Super service continued through our 4 hour (yes!) visit. The waitress that dealt with us did everything possible to make our visit 'special', including sorting a table, offering to bring drinks to the table, giving us a good description of the for available and bringing various sundries on request. The selection of beers has of course changed with the change of ownership; no longer Springhead. I forgot to note the brewery but the ales were wonderful local offerings and in peak condition. The original chef (Dan I believe) was laid of when the pub was sold, but I am very happy to say that he has been re-instated by the new owners. Therefore the food is of the same outstanding quality s ever. This was a Sunday Carvery - the selection was all the usual fare, plus more of everything. For example, Beef, Pork, Turkey with the following: Roasts, Mash, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cheese Sauce, Gravy, Yorkshires, Peas, Carrots, Horseradish, Cranberry, Crackling and I'm sure I have missed a few things!Various portions are available - medium, large - also available is a pensioner's special, which my mates wife had, but to be honest, it was no smaller than our 'mediums'.... it just cost less! Prices are great anyway, but if you're a pension go for it.I can heartily recommend the Beef here - it is succulent and obviously no expense has been spared in sourcing the best produce.I will be back. Soon.

The Boat Inn has very recently re-opened under new management so we thought we would take the opportunity to give it a try. Today was the most beautiful spring day so we walked down from Clayworth along the delightful Chesterfield Canal and decided to have a drink before the walk back. I ordered a cup of tea and my husband sampled the DuKeries Best Bitter. My tea arrived in a big pot with two teabags in allowing to treat myself to three cups of restorative tea - great value! My husbands pint also slipped down a treat too. We sat out the back on the decking enjoying the sunshine and watching the children playing on the aparatus in the fenced off area by the canal. It was lunchtime and the smells of a roast dinner tempted us so we decided to stay and treat ourselves to a carvery. We were not disappointed! Succulent flavoursome roast beef with a good choice of vegetables that were freshly cooked to perfection. The mark of a good carvery is whether they can serve broccoli that has not gone to mush in my view and I filled my plate with wonderful perfectly cooked green broccoli. The staff are very attentive too. Well, we will certainly be back and we hope the new owners get plenty of custom because if they carry on the way they have started they deserve to do very well indeed

We chose to visit and stay at The Boat Inn as we were attending a family party in the area. Straight away we knew that this decision was a good one as we were made to feel welcome straight away when checking into our accommodation at the pub. That evening we chose to dine in the pub restaurant and our meals were served with minimal delay and were delicious. The next morning we had a full English breakfast which was again up to a very high standard and really set us up for the day.The Boat Inn is a real family pub, clean and bright inside with a good selection of local beers. We found this Pub online after searching the area for a one night stop to break up a foodie weekend. On arrival we were shown to our room which was one of six in a converted outbuilding. The room was spacious & well equipped with a good en-suite, if I had one criticism of the room it was that it could do with a chair of some description, otherwise excellent. We had the evening meal which was really good, the pub wasn't full by any means & I don't know why as the menu although not vast was well executed with the chef happy to deviate from the menu, I had the "leveller pie" which has to be one of the finest I have tasted made with their own ale & my wife had chicken with stilton sauce. The pub sells its own ale from their micro-brewery with 6 choices on tap, all of those could be enjoyed in the beer garden overlooking the Chesterfield Canal.Breakfast next morning was cooked to order & was a perfect start to a new day.All in all I would recommend any one to this pub, whether you are just out for a meal or looking to stay longer, if all pubs were like this there would not be so many going out of existence.

A large group of us booked in for a nice relaxing New Years Day carvery. We had not been before but many of the group had and thoroughly recommended the carvery. We were the last of the group to arrive and decided we had done well as there queue for the carvery and bar that had been caused by our friends had started to subside and we did not have very long to wait to be served. The carvery was wonderful. We had turkey with all the trimmings - no we are not fed up of it yet!Plenty of meat and a good choice of well cooked vegetables with nice gravy. Just ideal. All was well so far. We were stuffed and not worried about a dessert but one of our friends was viewing the dessert board and I spotted "marzipan ice cream" on there and decided I HAD to try some. Dessert orders were placed and we continued to chat while we waited for our dessert. Time went on and no dessert arrived and some of our friends who had also ordered desserts started to mention it had been a long wait. Then another friend from another table walked up to the bar to ask what the delay was with pudding - apparently it was because "some of the desserts needed to be heated through and it takes time to do it properly" I did wonder how much "heating through" our ice cream needed but we waited again. Then someone else asked why the puds were taking so long to be told there was only one person on desserts and she was working through them as fast as she could. Suddenly I think someone realised there was a huge backlog and while most of our group he did not require puds had now paid their bill and left the rest of us were still sitting waiting. Eventually they started coming out and we were served a ramekin with a small portion of ice-cream. It was supposed to be "2 scoops" but it was explained that they had "lost the ice cream scoop and so had to use a spoon"I have no idea how long we actually waited for the ice cream but we spent a total of an hour and 40 minutes in the place. Considering there was hardly any wait for us to get our main meal and we left immediately after our pud I know we were waiting a LONG time. Our friends would have liked to have coffee but had waited so long for their cheesecake that they needed to get away as soon as they had eaten it. If we had any idea how long we would have waited for that ice cream we would never have ordered it and then the experience would have been very good. We would probably go back and try it again - we will give them a second chance but we may not bother with more than one course

The Robin Hood Mini Club visited the Boat Inn for its October monthly midweek run out.The Boat Inn has a very good local reputation and because of this we had our biggest ever turn out for winter midweek run out.Thursday night is "Steak Night" at the Boat Inn with special offers on all steaks so thursday looks like it is usually very busy.We pre booked to let them know the numbers & help them prepare, they reserved an area for our group so we could all sit together. On arrival we were advised there would be a delay due to the fact they were busy.I must admit i was surprised as we had booked in and felt we should have been prioritised. The staff were nearly an hour before they got round to taking our orders but the food was quite quick to arrive once the orders were placed. When they did get round to taking our orders some of our group were disappointed that they had sold out of the meal they wanted so they had to settle for a 2nd or 3rd choice meal. The quality of the food was great with very generous portions. The choice of draught beers was impressive and any pub that sells Springhead Brewery beers gets a big thumbs up from us because they brew excellent Beers called Maid Marion & Robin Hood. The Maid Marion is my favourite and was very good on the night.Service apart we did enjoy our visit and we are planning to go back in the summer to enjoy an evening beside the canal.

We chose to go for a Sunday carvery at The Boat inn. Nice clean and airy, tastefully decorated. Plenty of real ale to chose from which pleased my partner. We all chose to have the Sunday carvery- 5x regular and 1x daring large- we thought very reasonably priced at reg- £6.95 and large £8.95. Each table called up separately which does make it easier for serving and not having to rush your choices. 3 meat choices, the cook serving asks what meat I would like, I chose beef and pork, my only niggle is that the meat looks very tasty and I would of rather had thicker slices of the meat to appreciate the flavour, it's not a lot to ask for when there is plentiful supply of meat on the server. Yorkshire puddings were fantastic, homemade thank goodness very crisp and fluffy. Vegetables had a good choice but suspect peas and carrots were possibly frozen ones, also the choice of roast or mash potatoes or indeed both! I thought the gravy was meaty and tasty with lots of meat juices!! I think overall a good choice, the food was lovely and we all enjoyed our meal. We enjoyed the walk afterwards by the canal.

The food was fantastic both carvery and desserts. The service however was very slow staff all seemed rushed off their feet with not much idea of what was going on. It seemed as though they had booked alot more people in than they actually had tables for. This was probably due to the lack of staff and slowness of turnaround. There was probably a 20-30 minute wait for out orders to be taken and to be given the 'OK' to go and get our carvery. Then after we had all finished another 30mins before our plates were cleared. We were not asked if we would like desserts we had to ask a random waitress as ours was no where to be seen. We also had to ask for more drinks. I asked for our bill when we ordered desserts due to the slowness I figured it would be ready for when we finished our deserts. It never appeared! We paid at the bar in the end as waiting for our waitress to take desert plates away was taking a very long time. There were lots of people waiting to be seated at the bar that really didn't look happy. Gorgeous food but not enough staff.

We are becoming regular visitors at the Boat since it was taken over and renovated. A particular favourite is the Sunday carvery followed by a walk by the canal. The carvery is very good value at regular or large size. The regular plate holds plenty of food. Always three choices of meat cooked very well and a good selection of vegetables. Not all vegetables may be up to standard for the refined diner but plenty of choice and we always find enough at a good standard. The beer is from a specialised brewery and excellent! The pub has been renovated very well and is bright and comfortable. They also allow dogs, not in the restaurant naturally but in the bar areas where we choose to eat. This is a big plus allowing us to walk the beast and then enjoy a rest and meal. Somewhere we will definitely visit again and again.

Food was all lovely, very tasty, plentyful (I had to leave half my pie but the waitress kindly wrapped it up for me to take home which I thought was superb ) and there was no way we could manage dessert. This is one pub we will happily return to.

What a refreshing change to go to a Tesco store and find they have a proper café in situ. My local Tesco changed to Costa some years ago and it is dire in there, noisy, very expensive and very limited on choice. The café in Tesco Worksop is wonderful, clean, bright, great value for money and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I visit my sister who is in a local Nursing Home and the Tesco café has proved a godsend for somewhere comfortable and reasonably priced to get food and drink. Long may it last, wish my local store still had its decent café.

Went for Sunday carvery, really not what we expected. It’s not your usual carvery as you choose the meat and the server puts the rest of the food on your plate. The veg is on a table to the side but it’s mostly stood in hot water keeping warm, but making it tasteless and you cannot help yourself as it’s put on a plate while you stand there. There are different size plates to choose from but £12.50 for what you got seemed a bit much. The whole place is in need of a refurb and the loud music being played throughout made us decide we’d try elsewhere in future.

Great place for breakfast. We use the app to order and food & drink always arrive promptly with a smile. We can't really complain about the food, you get what you pay for.
