We have just spent a week in the Lake District celebrating our daughter’s 30th Birthday with our friends. We ate here twice and came for a drink once. The food is absolutely beautiful. The landlord and his wife Lynn are super friendly and very informative of things to do locally. Lynn, would you let your partner know we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast on the Bassenthwaite train today. So thank you for that. The Sun Inn is a great little pub, we will certainly be back and a big thank you to all your staff who are equally as welcoming and efficient. PS, our Westie loved your gorgeous Finn.

Everything was great apart from the quiz night, which blasted out all the speakers, including in the restaurant area, so you could not speak to each other. Love a quiz night, just not when I am trying to eat and chat with friends.

For the price of the burger and meal as a whole, the expectation was a lot higher. Burger itself appeared to be a frozen patty. Disappointing. Beers and ciders were not cold. Requested thunder and lightning ice cream with the chocolate cheesecake. Cheesecake was potentially cocoa powder at best, ice cream was vanilla instead of the requested ice cream. Second pudding was supposed to come with caramel sauce. This had to be reminded and then it came out as golden syrup in a paper cup (similar to mcdonalds sauce container) Over £100 spent. Saving grace, chips were were good. Wanted to use a local business, will go elsewhere next time.

First visit to this lovely pub having stayed at the Keswick Reach several times, and glad we made the effort. Lovely welcome from the chap at the bar and had a nice chat about the ‘lake’ in Scotland and of course here. (There is actually 1 lake, and obviously several hundred ‘lochs’). Anyway, ordered our food which was delicious. Had the lamb, and partner had the Cumberland sausage. Large portions, particularly the lamb - gorgeous. At the time of our visit which was around 4pm we were the only ones inside, but I would imagine it could get pretty busy. Would certainly return the next time we are down.

Returning to this beautiful village pub after 25 years. Beautiful English family run pub with a very warm welcome for us and our border collie, Molly. We had ended up at Bassenthwaite by accident but because of the great welcome at The Sun Inn we will definitely head there again. A beautiful little gem of a pub in the quiet village of Bassenthwaite. Really unexpected. The pub inside had a lovely old pub feel, the prices are very reasonable considering it's the lakes and bonus they had Hobgoblin gold and Wainwright's. Lovely beer garden, there's parking opposite. We didn't eat here but the menu looked good and it's somewhere we plan to try again. Amazing this is so close to the bustle of Keswick (10 mins drive) and somewhat overlooked.

Before the owners/managers comment saying please read other reviews etc etc. we have been here numerous times and never had problems but this time we were down with a group of 12 staying close by. So naturally we used this as our local watering hole. The staff are amazing the pub itself is very cosy. But the food is shocking. Out of the 12 people who ordered (some had starters AND mains) there was 1 maybe 2 dishes worthy of the price charged. The soup. And the lasagne. (The Chips are lovely also) We ordered a couple of the seafood platter starters. Of which they were so greasy you could physically squeeze large amounts of oil onto the plate. The pizzas are horrendous. Large section of toppings. But if you want a ready made base (looked more like cardboard with some dimple holes in it ) with some cheese slapped on and a couple of pieces of pepperoni then this is your place. Asked are the pizzas/dough homemade and was told ‘pizzas are homemade on site, just not the base’ Didn’t moan for a freebie or a discount. But when I told of the problems for future reference there was just the feeling you where getting shunned

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Sunday roast was far below satisfactory for £17 Edit in response to owners comments: I would firstly like to apologise if we made the two staff serving us feel intimidated, we were a small group of adults and felt as though we conveyed our honest disappointment in a mature manner. I think the response however, really reflects the poor management. To correct some blatant lies, there was in fact one medium dish of cauliflower cheese between three of us. The staff did not check back on us or ask how the meal was even when clearing the plates. And when it came to paying the bill we were certainly not horrible to the servers. After outlining how disappointed we were in a discreet manner, the staff said they couldn’t take anything off the bill without a manager. After calling the manager, they said the best the manager would do is take “a couple quid off” we felt as though the manager was just blowing us aside. The staff were in an awkward position as it seemed like they knew the food was sub par but couldn’t go behind management’s decision to the point where they suggested paying the difference out of their own pocket. At this point we settled up and left having apologised to the staff for putting them in this position. Your spiteful response was a poor attempt at deflecting the blame onto the customer rather than taking a fair review seriously and listening to your staff. You may also want to think about threatening customers by disclosing irrelevant personal information as I find this rather disturbing. Obviously there is reason to complain and platforms like this are a place to give honest reviews. If you don’t like it then work on improving the service you provide.

The Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite is a delightful gem of a pub that exudes charm and character from the moment you step inside. Nestled in a picturesque setting, this quaint establishment offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing dining experience. One of the standout features of the Sun Inn is its intimate interior. With only a few tables available for dining, it is essential to book ahead to secure a spot. This limited seating arrangement enhances the cozy and personalized feel of the pub. For pet owners, the Sun Inn is a haven. Dogs are not just allowed but are warmly welcomed, which was the main reason we chose to visit. The pub goes above and beyond by offering a dedicated dog menu. Our furry friend, Finn, was thrilled with his meal, enjoying two sausages and a dessert of ice cream. It’s a thoughtful touch that truly sets the Sun Inn apart and makes it an ideal destination for those looking to include their pets in their dining plans. The food at the Sun Inn is exceptional. I had the Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, which was beautifully tender, and the Seafood Basket for a starter, which was delicious. Additionally, the staff at the Sun Inn were friendly and attentive, striking the right balance between being non-existent and annoyingly intrusive. Their service added to the overall enjoyment of the meal, ensuring we felt welcome and well-cared for throughout our visit. The food, ambiance, and exceptional service all contribute to making the Sun Inn a standout choice. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this charming pub is well worth a visit. It’s a place where you can enjoy great food in a cozy setting, all while ensuring your canine companion is treated like a VIP.

Lovely location, very friendly and accommodating staff, dog friendly, kid friendly and the menu was perfect way to finish a big walk, tasty and hearty. It was busy in the beer garden and a great atmosphere, but didn't stunt the service or quality. Great pub!

What a gem this pub is. Full of character, great food and ales on tap and friendly staff. One on our doorstep we never knew was there! They fitted us in with no notice on a busy night which is really appreciated. See you again soon!

A very disappointing visit on an otherwise lovely sunny evening in a nice setting. Bog standard pub food - largely cooked from pre-prepared bought-in/frozen - eaten in an unloved outside space. Barman's welcome was cool at best - felt like we were an inconvenience to him even on a quiet night. This could and should be a great pub given the setting and wouldn't take much to achieve that - warm up the welcome, clean up the outside space, and cook some of the food from scratch.

Absolutely love a visit to Butterflies! The menu has something for everyone and service is quick and efficient. There's never too long of a wait at busy periods (they have tables upstairs too!) and the tables are always cleaned throughly when you're seated. The prices are very affordable and they accept card. Portion sizes are great and they make a lovely salad! Staff are friendly and welcoming and they are very accommodating of the pram when I visit with my daughter. The café is also breastfeeding friendly with the owner Strad even commenting "I should be proud of myself for wanting to give my baby the best start" which was a very lovely sentiment.

Whilst a little way out it’s well worth the drive. The menu has a wide range of options and an excellent array of gluten free dishes. The service was excellent with staff busying around the restaurant attending to customers, nothing was too much trouble. The food came quickly, piping hot and very tasty. The cost was very reasonable and the portions were large. A fantastic place and I can’t wait to return.

Nice friendly staff, first time in this bakery. Bought bread which was excellent and a carrot cake slice, which was a bit dry, but overall very nice local shop.
