This is an excellent traditional pub. Warm and welcoming. Great atmosphere. Great service. Our visit was unplanned and the staff went out of their way to provide a table for us when they were obviously very busy with bookings. The food was excellent. The drinks were excellent. The service was excellent. We were so impressed we booked to return two days later and dropped in for a drink the next day. We were not let down. Highly recommended, a must.

We were staying at a caravan park in Bassenthwaite and the Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite was recommended as a good place to eat. The service was good. The food was great. The staff and atmosphere were lovely too. We had 3 evening meals there and a Sunday roast that came with roast potatoes and mash and some very nice complimentary cauliflower cheese A very clean and reasonably priced place to eat!

Sunday roast was far below satisfactory for £17 Edit in response to owners comments: I would firstly like to apologise if we made the two staff serving us feel intimidated, we were a small group of adults and felt as though we conveyed our honest disappointment in a mature manner. I think the response however, really reflects the poor management. To correct some blatant lies, there was in fact one medium dish of cauliflower cheese between three of us. The staff did not check back on us or ask how the meal was even when clearing the plates. And when it came to paying the bill we were certainly not horrible to the servers. After outlining how disappointed we were in a discreet manner, the staff said they couldn’t take anything off the bill without a manager. After calling the manager, they said the best the manager would do is take “a couple quid off” we felt as though the manager was just blowing us aside. The staff were in an awkward position as it seemed like they knew the food was sub par but couldn’t go behind management’s decision to the point where they suggested paying the difference out of their own pocket. At this point we settled up and left having apologised to the staff for putting them in this position. Your spiteful response was a poor attempt at deflecting the blame onto the customer rather than taking a fair review seriously and listening to your staff. You may also want to think about threatening customers by disclosing irrelevant personal information as I find this rather disturbing. Obviously there is reason to complain and platforms like this are a place to give honest reviews. If you don’t like it then work on improving the service you provide.

The stars are for the service alone, the food was very hit and miss. Some nice lamb dish, and fish pie but everything else felt tasteless and microwaved, also most tasteless deserts I’ve had in a long time and I’m pretty easily pleased! Despite not having booked in advance (because we weren't completely sure of our plans) we were able to get a table outside, which was perfect on a clear and bright summer evening. We needed somewhere where I would be able to have a gluten free meal and this did not disappoint. A good range of gf options, including, but not restricted to, vegan items. I went for the slow-cooked lamb which was falling apart and delicious. Dessert was the inevitable gf brownie, but it was good and it was warm and went very well with the scoop of vanilla ice cream.

We stayed in Bassenthwaite last week and spent a good portion of that time in the Sun Inn. It's so so lovely. The staff are fantastic and helpful, the beer is great (shout out to the Bassenthwaite Beauty), the food was perfect and the atmosphere top notch. The Sun Inn is extremely dog friendly and very accommodating for the pooches- they have a water station outside with lots of bowls, as well as a full doggy menu- Finns Menu, which our dog Liam very much enjoyed sampling (the sausages were a must for him after a long day on the fells). A really great pub experience and I can't wait to come back!

The Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite is a delightful gem of a pub that exudes charm and character from the moment you step inside. Nestled in a picturesque setting, this quaint establishment offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing dining experience. One of the standout features of the Sun Inn is its intimate interior. With only a few tables available for dining, it is essential to book ahead to secure a spot. This limited seating arrangement enhances the cozy and personalized feel of the pub. For pet owners, the Sun Inn is a haven. Dogs are not just allowed but are warmly welcomed, which was the main reason we chose to visit. The pub goes above and beyond by offering a dedicated dog menu. Our furry friend, Finn, was thrilled with his meal, enjoying two sausages and a dessert of ice cream. It’s a thoughtful touch that truly sets the Sun Inn apart and makes it an ideal destination for those looking to include their pets in their dining plans. The food at the Sun Inn is exceptional. I had the Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, which was beautifully tender, and the Seafood Basket for a starter, which was delicious. Additionally, the staff at the Sun Inn were friendly and attentive, striking the right balance between being non-existent and annoyingly intrusive. Their service added to the overall enjoyment of the meal, ensuring we felt welcome and well-cared for throughout our visit. The food, ambiance, and exceptional service all contribute to making the Sun Inn a standout choice. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this charming pub is well worth a visit. It’s a place where you can enjoy great food in a cozy setting, all while ensuring your canine companion is treated like a VIP.

A very disappointing visit on an otherwise lovely sunny evening in a nice setting. Bog standard pub food - largely cooked from pre-prepared bought-in/frozen - eaten in an unloved outside space. Barman's welcome was cool at best - felt like we were an inconvenience to him even on a quiet night. This could and should be a great pub given the setting and wouldn't take much to achieve that - warm up the welcome, clean up the outside space, and cook some of the food from scratch.

This was a stop in on a busy bank holiday weekend and man oh man, I can't say enough about the staff. Absolutely wonderful people. The thing that killed it was the food. The menu is odd, and feels like a combination of bad American menu items and an attempt to be modern when their best dishes being the old reliable and traditional. I was also a little ill from my fried food dinner the last visit. I think there are better options out there for dinner but definitely pop in for a drink and atmosphere. Oh and parking wars are common, there is a tiny carpark so you have to be lucky to score a spot. You may find parking spots a little bit of walk away though. Update: And no, not the wrong pub as the owner suggested in their response, food reviews are always relative but for example nachos swimming in red goop does not equate to a good food experience in my mission to visit every pub in the uk. BTW the staff literally referred to the carpark wars that happen every busy weekend and laughed about it with us, i'd say there was a total of 15 cars (albeit badly parked)? i wouldn't call that large my guy, but you go with whatever measuring stick you need to convince yourself on what is "large".
