The Sun Inn in Cherwell

As it is one of our "locals" we ought to visit for a meal and we were not disappointed. Staff very friendly and welcoming and the food was very good. Well presented and well cooked. Four of us shared a meat and a fish platter as our starters and we all had a fish dish as our main course. No room for dessert though - maybe next time. Fairly extensive wine list at a variety of prices per bottle.

Although it wasn't the nicest of days, weather-wise, the team served us well and had thought of things like blankets which were very welcomed when being forced to sit outside for govt. covid rules. The Hook Norton brewery beer was well kept so tasty lovely, and the food was great. We had the Sunday roast (beef) and steak. My partner said it was the tastiest steak she had had in ages!

We stayed here the night following the Hook Norton brewery tour so had dinner and breakfast at the pub. It is a friendly village pub and we were both impressed by the food and Hook Norton beers on tap. The fish and chips were delicious with a nice light batter. Breakfast was also very good, scrambled egg cooked to perfection and a generous portion of salmon. Very impressed.

The food was amazing. lots of Gluten free options as well. Lovely pub - decor atmosphere and staff were all great. Also found a hidden gem of a games room at the back of the pub with a pool table in - took me back to my student days!

My boyfriend and I enjoyed a lovely dinner here whilst staying in Hook Norton. We reserved a table in advance and were given a lovely spot in the snug. There were fresh flowers on the table and a candle too! We were very impressed by the food and thought the portion sizes were perfect. Dessert was also delicious and we were lucky to receive 25% off our bill as it was a Tuesday evening! We would recommend the Sun Inn to anyone passing through Hook Norton.

Good friendly service and the food was very good. The menu had a good choice of food and a so e decent beer. Social distancing measures were in place.

Our family gathered for Sunday lunch at The Sun Inn to celebrate my birthday. We were given a nice large table. The food was really good, the vegetarian in our family had a quite a few choices and those who did not want a Sunday roast really appreciated the fact that many items from the standard menu were also available at Sunday lunch time. The staff and service were excellent. A really good pub lunch!!!

When we booked a table initially it was because we had a brewery tour booked and wanted to be within walking distance to allow both of us to enjoy the samples. However what we booked our of necessity turned out to be an excellent end to the day. The Sun Inn is cosy and modern and the food was delicious and generous. We started with pig cheek croquettes and black pudding scotch egg followed by a burger and fish and chips, absolutely delicious, highly recommend.

Warm and friendly pub that welcomes dogs, great food...would recommend the chilli! Great beer and lovely owners! 5 stars!

We had a lovely couple of dinners at this pub when we stayed nearby recently. Warm and pleasant service by the staff and lovely food. I tried the ribeye steak one night and fish cakes another night which were both delicious. We had a good night talking to another couple we met in the poolroom after our meal one night and overall had lovely experience of this pub.

I have attended twice in one week, ignored for over an hour and not offered dessert. Booked for Sunday roast at 230pm , sold out. Manager called to talk about it and said “what do I expect her to do , she can’t help running out of a roast dinner” terrible service . Terrible attitude. Never had this experience prior , management and staff changes needed!

Book in advance for Sunday lunch for my partner & I. On arrival was told by an older lady to just go and sit behind a pillar, wasn’t shown to table. When the lady came over with our menu she advised us that there were no more Sunday lunches... even though that’s what we booked for.Was then told we can have a nut roast or the ends of the meat that they wouldn’t normally sell. When spoke to the manager we was told “what do you expect me to do about it”... Shocking service from the manager & the older lady.

My Grandma and I stayed here for a night towards the end of July. The food was incredible, it’s the best ribeye I’ve had and the breakfast was also amazing. We were served by a younger waitress who was lovely. The only thing I could fault was how loud it was in the night, around 2am there was a big group right outside the pub/hotel playing music on a speaker and I had to ask them to turn it off through the window. This kept my grandma up as they had been laughing and chatting for a while before this and continued after I asked them to turn the music down. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with anyone here, but I thought it would be worth a mention. Apart from that, I would definitely come back for the food as it was delicious and you were all so accommodating to my Grandma.

Popped in for an early dinner whilst staying in Hook Norton. Staff were friendly and the food was very good. Bonus was also being part of the Eat Out to Help Out campaign. Lovely experience

We booked this with only an hour's notice and the staff were very accommodating - especially for 6 people. Service was excellent and the food was absolutely superb. I cannot recommend this pub enough. Great decor, great staff, amazing food! Great value for money. Thank you!

Came here for a one night stay on way back from Bournemouth. The pub is clean, has parking, double and family rooms above the bar, great food and excellent service.We had a double and a family room both of which were clean, well equipped and had everything you need including tea, coffee, toiletries and bottled water. We had both dinner and breakfast in the bar and the food was outstanding, couldn’t have asked for better, the manager and staff couldn’t have been more helpful, would highly recommend this place to anyone.Please note this is a pub with rooms above (which we liked), they are open late and so you can hear noise in the bedrooms from the bar, this didn’t bother us at all but if your noise sensitive I’d look elsewhere.

Nice cozy pub with good range of Hook Norton ales and good food menu. I had the fish and chips paired with an Old Hooky ale. Very tasty. Fast friendly service. Big pub area in the back. Right across the street from the bus service. I will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed visiting here over the last week whilst we stayed in Hook Norton. Food is pretty good, with a nice selection of classics that are impeccably presented, the beer (Hook Norton, naturally) is well prepared, and the staff really are excellent. We had 3 x children and a well behaved dog with us, and felt very welcome. The only reason why I can’t make a 5 out of 5 is that it can be pricey proposition dining here - but well worth it.

We had not booked and the inn was very busy on a Sunday night. We had our dog with us too and the staff were brilliant in finding us a table. The food was faultless and thoroughly recommended.

Lucked upon the Sun Inn on steak night, x2 steak dinners and a bottle of win for 25 quid. Excellent. Great food in a great local hotel in Hook Norton.

We booked a table of 4 for Sunday evening and were not told that there was a reduced menu between 6-8pm. So when we got there and saw the very pricey and very limited menu it was a disappointment. We found something to eat with my parents and my son both picking a ploughmans.. Well to say the ploughmans was over priced is an understatement. For £13 you recieved, 1 slice of brown bread cut into 2, 3 small slices of ham, 1 tiny pickle, and the smallest white ceramic dish filled with grated cheese. I have never seen a ploughmans like it. I think they must have made at least £12 off of each dish. The amount on the plate would have been enough to fill one sandwich, if we had been give another slice of bread. When I questioned the staff over the ridiculously small and unappetizing food I was told that all ploughman's are different. Yes I agree, but this was disgraceful for the price and we will all the competition around for good pub food we wont be back.

Good Polish pierogi to start. The filling sseem to change regularly and are different from the menu; ditto main course pie which as beef/onion/stilton which was very good with excellent vegetables. Too full for pudding. Everyone else similarly happy.

Live in the village and enjoy coming into The Sun. Food always good, rump steaks are chunky and tender, meat board delicious. Waitress with shoulder length coloured hair is super efficient and friendly. Great place.

We stopped by to hide from the rain,Nettles attacked me; a little in pain.A nice local gin and hummus and bread,We decided to stay for lunch instead.The shroom soup was by far the best,Pasta and bruschetta couldn’t contest.Service was great but the bill wasn’t cheap,Nice little rest and then back on our feet!

After enjoying the Hook Norton brewery tour, we spent the evening in the pub restaurant. Food excellent, served by friendly staff, nice atmosphere!!

Sadly we had a terrible meal of pie, over cooked burnt pastry and very very dry filling, will not be returning however the bar staff were lovely and friendly

Had a nice meal here whilst on holiday in the area. Menu selection was good, I had the steak pie which was good and my partner had the pork. Both lovely dishes, only thing was mine didn't come with gravy, which it could have maybe done with. The prices are a little on the high end for pub food but overall it was a lovely little village pub.

We had a table booked for my birthday and the food was delicious. The service was fantastic too. One of the nicest steaks I’ve had, cooked to perfection. It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for.

Post visiting the Hook Norton brewery trip we ventured into town to have a spot of late lunch. The Sun Inn was ideally placed 15 mins walk from the brewery. The staff were pleasant and engaging and served us food albeit with only minutes before last food orders. The food was well presented and tasty and all washed down with a couple of drinks before the bus arrived. There's a great beer garden out the back. Well done!

Coped very well with 16 hungry and thirsty blokes. Very good service and food. In error I left a rucksack with some valuables in it and it was handed in and I collected it the following morning. After exploring a local nature reserve we were looking for somewhere to have lunch. We stumbled across this pub in Hook Norton and although we had not booked and there were four of us they found us a table. Three of us had a roast and the other person had a burger. Food was really good.

Arrived to the peeling of the Church Bells, and the Hook Norton dray (complete with horses) in the car park - lovely! We were given a warm welcome by the Manageress and her staff, but warned that our room (directly over the bar), could be a bit noisy. However, we weren't disturbed at all. Lovely food, good ales and a warm welcome - what more could we ask for? Thank you all.

I have been an Avid Admirer of the Amber Nectar/Old Hooky for many Decades.For a variety of reasons I have never managed to go on the Hook Norton Brewery Trip. This was Remedied &for; good Measure I thought I would make Short Break off it. I reviewed both the Pear Tree & the Sun Inn & chose the Sun as it had a more Extensive Menu. I was not dissapointed & was met by the Manageress on arriving. She was very Bubbly & nothing was to much trouble for Her. The Old Hooky was in Excellent Form, as was the Sandwiches we had for Lunch.The Inn was Buzzing in the Evening as they had a Promotion on that Night, any Main Course was only £10. We had a 3 Course Meal as part of our BB Package. Food was Excellent. The Room although Small was more than adequate & the Shower was Spacious. I would certainly stay again & would Recommend the Establishment.

We went for an evening meal lovely pub great food and service. We didn't realize that meals were all £10 on Tuesday s so even better !!

Staff are very friendly and helpful and will do all they can to make your meal an enjoyable experience. The food if fabulous the menu varies so often something new. I would recommend the sun inn

We were staying the village for a week and so visited the Sun several times. The food is really good, the beer is excellent, it’s a Hook Norton Brewery pub so it goes without saying, and the team and the locals are friendly. The only downside is that I was really looking forward to a Sunday roast in the evening but unfortunately they stop serving on a Sunday at 3pm. My own fault, just didn’t read the sign but it’s unusual for a pub not to serve into the evening. Would definitely go back if we are in the area again.

The establishment is fine , decent food, even if the prices are near the top for the level of service , the same applies for the room. The big problem with our room was that it was directly above the bar , which played loud music until 1.30 am- alright if you’re in the midst of it , not if you’re upstairs in bed but have the impression that you’re in the midst of it !

We booked this hotel for a short break. When we arrived we were met by very friendly and helpful staff. The room was well presented, clean and spacious. Beds were comfortable with plenty of good quality bedding and pillows. There was additional room heaters if needed. Complementary tea, coffee and water were well stocked and of good quality.The evening meal was delicious and the staff even catered for my lactose intolerance needs. Breakfast was excellent. Altogether a superb located hotel and well worth a visit.

Stayed one night as within walking distance of Hook Norton Brewery. Lovely place to stay with a great room. Dinner in the evening was excellent we happened to be there on "steak night" and can honestly say some of the best steaks we have tasted

A really enjoyable lunchtime session with friends, good beers, wines and especially food.

We stopped here for lunch on a Monday lunchtime after a walk nearby. The staff were very offhand and there was some confusion over where we could sit as there was a birthday party group in. Eventually we got some menus and ordered our food. What a disappointment! My leek and potato soup was a thick dark green sludge with a slick of oil on the top. The cheap white bread had been hanging around in the kitchen for a while as it was dry. When I asked for some more bread as it was dry, another slice of the same came out with no butter. The soup was strangely tasteless apart from overpoweringly salty and only lukewarm. When the plates were cleared I said to the waitress that the soup had been very salty so I had left it, she just said” I’ll tell them” - whatever that meant! My husband had the squid which was okay but a mean portion for the money. Beer was good as it should be in the home of Hook Norton ale but the food leaves much to be desired and there are much better places to eat in this area.

Sunday lunch - delicious. Leave enough rom for the deserts or you'll be sorry.

My husband and I had beef, and our friends had pork. Beautiful food with our friends, who have eaten in some very nice restaurants saying it was the best Sunday lunch, eaten out, that they’d ever had!!

In the middle of the village opposite the church, this is another village pub that has pursued the Gastro Pub route. A good interior with stripped pine floor and furniture, ample bar area and seating. A good pub menu with some classics and I ordered the calves liver with mash, madeira gravy and spinach. Oh dear - the liver was burnt almost to a cinder and looked like old leather. I should have sent it back but we had been on a long, tiring walk and I did not want the hassle. Desert was good - ginger and vanilla cheese cake which was accomplished but the kitchen needs to step up to the mark.

We stayed in Hook Norton for the weekend and visited the Sun Inn on two occasions. The food and service where excellent we would recommend this anybody who is in the area.

Two of us had planned a circular walk starting and finishing at the Sun Inn situated in the middle of the very pleasant village of Hook Norton - famous for its ancient brewery.

Our mains were warm not hot. In fairness though the food, location and beer were good, just annoying when not hot. Our main shock was the unhygienic outside rear patio area where there was discarded (what looked like) food stuffs, general rubbish and a lack of care or focus towards standards. Dread to think what the kitchen looks like if public customer areas are like this! Management attention and focus required.

Lovely modernised pub with plentiful seating and nice ambience. Extensive menu which offered great choice and good VfM. Service from the young women working there was smiley and very efficient. Beer just great too. Thanks

I visited this lovely Oxfordshire pub whilst in Hook Norton celebrating a friend’s birthday. A small group had some drinks and snacks at lunchtime which were very well done ( sandwiches and chips etc) the pub had a warm and welcoming vibe and many of the visiting group of us enjoyed watching the rugby in the games room. In the evening I was part of a party of approx 30 people for a sit down 3 course meal. The food was delicious and the waiting staff coped really walk with the challenge of tightly packed tables and guests intent of chatting and catching up with each other. The pub has a great mix of traditional fires together with a tasteful renovation.

Visited the Sun Inn for Sunday lunch today, there was a really good choice of dishes on the menu, 2 of us went for rare roast beef with all the trimmings, one had roast old spot pork with all the trimmings. The roasts were excellent, the meat was plentiful, with a huge yorkshire pudding, nice choice of fresh veg and roast potatoes with good gravy. For dessert 2 of us had chocolate marathon with vanilla bean ice cream and home made short bread, and one had lemon tart with raspberry sorbet. I found the chocolate marathon a bit weird it tasted nice but was akin to a chocolate fondant but with only a crust top and rest very runny like chocolate soup. Also there was too much of it. But vanilla bean ice cream was nice, but not a big scoop and the short bread was ok. I would not order this dessert again.

Stayed here as went to the Hook Norton brewery which was the main reason for the trip and is within walking distance. Food and beer selection here is excellent, bit pricy compared to what we are used to but really tasty. We were given keys for our room which was well presented and clean. However the key to the lock on the door didn’t work so we were moved to another room. Room view went from the lovely church to the flat room and kitchen extractor fans at the back :-( . We were told we could stay in the first room as the door locked when inside but would of been insecure when we weren’t there as anyone could of walked in! The 2nd room again was clean and well presented but the mattress we found uncomfortable and the pillows were very thin so we didn’t get very good sleep. Every time one of us moved in the night it woke the other up. Breakfast was nice it’s Continental style but still plenty of food and juices to pick from.

We booked into The Sun Inn with friends, following a brewery tour. The staff were helpful and friendly. The bedrooms were very good, very comfortable. Very enjoyable stay. The evening meals and breakfasts were very good.

We chose The Sun to stay for a night as we were visiting the nearby brewery for a tour. The food was excellent on the evening and breakfast a delight. The staff were friendly and efficient and the modern rooms very comfortable as was the Inn itself. Of course the real ale was great too. Thanks guys.

Great evening with friends having a lovely meal. Service was very friendly and nicely paced despite being a very busy Friday evening. The menu is varied and staff are very willing to make small changes to suit tastes which is a good gesture. Great to see the Sun a popular, busy, lively village pub again.

This light and airy pub serves wonderful, high quality meals at reasonable prices. Traditional fare with some modern twists. The fish and chips were excellent. Others had the burger which looked delicious. We didn't have to wait too long. Very friendly service. Pub nice and busy, which gave a great atmosphere.

We had two excellent meals here. We were staying locally for three nights, and chose to eat here twice, which says something I guess? Lovely welcoming, efficient staff. Premises very clean. Wholeheartedly recommend the home made cod’s cheek “scampi” for a starter!

Popped in here for lunch today, their web site says food served all day Saturday but on arrival we were told it stopped being served at 2.30 , luckily we arrived in time but maybe best to phone them before going just to make sure, wanted to sit in garden but so many wasps about we sat inside. Staff were friendly , service was quick , food well presented.

We lunched here and it was good. We only had some very nice sandwiches and some light drinks, but what we was served was very nice. We was going to eat dinner here, but found the menu far too “Fish based” for our liking this far inland ( by the coast, yes, but many many miles inland...... NO)

I've been here before - not for a while though. This was very good - the food is better now than I remember.

We stay at the Sun Inn every year at this time, on our annual pilgrimage to the Hook Norton brewery. It's a truly great place with excellent service and comfortable, modern, clean rooms. The welcome on arrival was warm and genuinely friendly, the beer is perfection as always, and although we have not eaten dinner at the pub it looks great too. The breakfast is one of the best, a great mix of local produce.

My husband, toddler, baby and I came for a meal here yesterday evening and we had such a lovely time. The food and service was outstanding. I am unable to have dairy products at the moment and the chef was more than hospitable with adapting the menu for me and switched a sauce on the lamb rump dish that I ordered. We were made to feel welcome and the waitresses and bar staff were so lovely and attentive. I just wanted to say thank you for such a lovely experience (it can sometimes be daunting going for a meal with a toddler and newborn baby!), but we felt at ease and wished we lived closer so we could come again.

Lovely staff and excellent food made us very welcome along with our dog Woody. We would definitely recommend the Sun to friends and family 😄

Really nice place. Great layout. Arrived from the otherside of the world and tried to order food at 7.45pm. Tried 3 different options. Not available. Walked out. Disappointing.

We arrived late on the evening but the staff took care of us none the less. Simple but mouth watering menu at a very reasonable price. Drop in if you have time; you won’t be sorry!

Stayed one night, comfortable, small room, food good, but if you expect to get to sleep before 1am on a Friday don’t stay here, noise from the bar is ridiculous, pounding music and shouty drunk locals, little regard for visitors. when mentioned in the morning was told, maybe the speakers were too loud and remember “we are a pub and stay open until 12 or 1am”

Very close to the Brewery of Hook Norton, placed in the middle of the village it is often served by the horses and dray from the Brewery. Selling the Hooky Ales it is a nice place to stop.

The Sun has been beautifully refurbished since last there, and is lovely. Was looking forward to a nice steak (as this had been recommended by a friend) so was disappointed when told they had no sirloin steaks, only rump. Sooo, i ordered rump (not my fave) and was further disappointed when i tried to eat it. It was very gristly and chewy and i sadly left half of it. I did comment to the waitress who said she would inform the chef, but that was as far as it got!!!! However, the pud was very nice, and the rest of the party enjoyed their meals. Was just my unlucky day, and my birthday to boot!!!

Visited a couple months ago to meet a up with a few friends and family. I hadn't been here since the refurb a couple years ago and the place looked completely different. It's now a nice smart bar with modern features. The staff were friendly and helpful and it was easy to get a table even though they were busy! Food was as equally good and good value for money.

This pub is great as they clearly take care of the food, enjoy giving good service and everything is priced at a reasonable level. No hesitation to recommend.

Having visited almost all the pubs within the local area I can easily say this is the best. Great food, service and atmosphere. If you are visiting the area and can only go to one pub for food....this is the one.

My boyfriend and I visited The Sun Inn this weekend for a nights stay after being double booked at another hotel. Despite the confusion they made us feel very welcome. The room was lovely and clean and had everything you needed; tea, coffee, hair dryer etc.

Friendly staff, attractive interior, lovely loos (especially the tiled floor!) I really enjoyed the fish and chips, delicious and nicely presented. My 3 fellow diners also enjoyed their meals and were very complimentary.

Nice pub with separate restaurant area, good friendly service and nice atmosphere. Our meal was very good and the service likewise, however a bug bear of mine is pubs, whose business is alcohol sales-reliant, charging way over the odds for wine; pure profit-grabbing in a way that they would never do for beer, spirits or cider. I'd hazard a fair guess that our wine was priced at about 7 times cost, this just cannot be justified. Otherwise this would have been close to a 5 star experience.

This pub seems to be in the process of being done up - lots of fresh paintwork everywhere, & nicely done. Staff were immediately friendly & helpful & there was a nice, relaxed atmosphere throughout teh bars 7 garden.

My wife and I had the pleasure to stay here for three nights at the end of July, we'd come over from Thailand for our annual trip to see family who live in the area. We were given a wonderful welcome by the temporary Manager, Bob Morton, and the rest of the staff were equally welcoming, friendly, witty and funny with great banter, and it was a real pleasure to meet them all! We entertained my relations here for lunches and evening meals, and we all agreed that the meals were truly tasty, very well presented and reasonably priced; the breakfasts were amazing too; the young Chef working there was clearly a master of his art! All the food served there is sourced within an area of 5 miles. The whole Pub is superbly clean, well and tastefully decorated throughout. Our bedroom, small, reflecting the nature and age of this ancient inn, was very well appointed and even came with a welcoming bottle of Ale. The bathroom was great and the shower was powerful. We would go back without any hesitation, and even just for a holiday break.

Eat at the his pub for the first time in ages. Now managed on behalf the local brewery the menu is, at the moment, limited but the current manager has plans to extend it in due course. Went with friends, food was good and well cooked. Beer well kept too. Worth giving it a try now that it has reopened after a short period of closure.

This was a family get together - grandparents, parents and young kids. It had been organised by the grandparents and first impressions weren't good. It was 1:15pm and apart from a table of two the place was deserted - and it was a large pub. On entering we were greeted by a table of breakfast condiments - cereals etc., which looked like a permanent home which was weird - they should have been cleared away. Our table for 10 was behind a dividing wall and was quite secluded which made it like our own private dining room - which with young kids isn't a bad thing. We all ordered roasts, apart from two of the kids who ordered pasta.We waited a good half hour before our order arrived, but when our meals arrived it was a pleasant surprise. Everything was nicely cooked and freshly prepared. My beef was pink as requested, the Yorkshire Pudding was large and light and the cauliflower flower cheese that accompanied the red cabbage, roast potatoes, parsnips, roast carrot and kale actually tasted of a nice mature cheddar.The meal was excellent. Portions were big! There were no puddings apart from ice cream, and we had to persuade our waitress to split two adult portions for the kids - for some reason they didn't do child portions. The service generally though, was good.Overall a good Sunday roast, but limited if you wanted anything else to eat. The young chef made an appearance and we complimented him on his cooking. I have a feeling previous chefs may not have been quite so good hence how empty the place was at a time when it should have been packed.Roast 5 stars. Food choice 1 star. Atmosphere 1 star
