This being our local pub we used it as a go to for a quick bite. But following our most recent visit where my husband and i heard the owner and bar staff say 'don't get me started on gays, you know what i think about them'. Along with 'yeah i know, it's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve' i have to say it will be our last. The views of anyone don't bother me. But to stand behind your own bar, calling a potential customer or a member of someone's family/friend seems absurd. You may read other reviews that mention 'a sullen land lady' and this is absolutely spot on. Imagine, being greet by the hostess in the most foul mood, this is how it is. If you are a table of 2, by ABSOLUTELY NO MEANS can you sit at a table set for 4. Heaven forbid a single diner perching themselves at a table for 4. You will be asked to move regardless if you are elderly/disabled or other. Either by 'The sullen landlady' or a very embarrassed waitress who realises how petty it is to ask someone to move seats in an otherwise empty bar. The tiredness of the decor really is representative of the attitude of the owner(s). From the threadbare carpets covered in gaffa tape to the wallpaper that came off years ago so the wall has just been painted the same colour! Let alone the tale of the rottweiller dump on the carpet from their dogs roaming free in the pub after hours. That been said, the effort at Halloween or Christmas, is all out, decorations all over! Why not just 'Smile' at customers on a normal day instead of speaking to them like they're being told off, just for asking 'Are you still serving food?' A chain pub further down the same road will have a full car park whereas this will have 2-3 cars in the car park. Ask yourself why and do yourself a favour. (go somewhere else)

Came here as close to B&B after a long drive, for evening meal. Uninspiring facade and steel doors as front entrance. Carpets had seen better days, more tape than carpets! Meal was pretty awful, nothing home cooked and presentation non-existant. Food filled a hole, but did not satisfy either of us. No other diners at 19:00 on a Sunday evening.

We called at the Sun Inn a while ago for a Sunday Lunch, which we hadn’t booked. We waited at the bar along with another lady, who stood with her back to us. When we asked the barmaid if there was availability, she looked at the lady, who didn’t even turn around but shook her head. The barmaid awkwardly told us there were no tables. We were stunned!! It was ignorance at its finest! I’m guessing there’s good reason of having only one pic, that being of the outside, so you can’t see the miserable faces of the owner/s. Can’t review the food but would recommend either a crash course in customer service or a sharp reminder of good manners. If you like cheap and not cheerful, you’ll not be disappointed.

The decor matches their outdated homophobic views. The owner is a nasty woman with a horrible attitude that makes you feel uncomfortable. The staff talk about you when you're only 10feet away. I will never go in again and will never recommend the place to anyone.

We were enjoying a nice fish and chips in my local pub until the owner came out. 3 young waitresses were talking about the change in the LGBTQ logo/name when the owner piped up 'don't get me started on gays, you know what I think', The reply from one of the young waitresses was 'Yeah, it's Adam and Steve, not Adam and Eve'. This got my blood absolutely BOILING! I have NEVER been into a place where the owner will spout their crap actually in front of the customers that are putting money in the till?! We left and made a point of saying that 'Adam and Steve' had paid their wages and they could not have looked less interested other than to say 'oh OK' When we got home we called the pub to make them aware. Waste of time! The owners son only had to say that she's of an age with old opinions. along with 'it's her freedom of speech to say what she wants' My point was that she can have what opinion she wants, but who would spout trash like that infront of their paying customers?! I will not be returning and would advise everyone to give it a very wide birth.  Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Just popped in for a drink and a look at the menu for a later date. The pub still looks like it’s stuck in the 80s with the decor and carpets inside. However the food looks lovely and the menu is very reasonable although we never ate here that is only because I had my fussy child with me who didn’t really like anything on the menu. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are plenty of benches outside where you can enjoy your drink with your dogs if the weather is nice. We went to go again on a Sunday evening around 7 before bank holiday Monday and it was closed not sure if this is a regular closure or we was just unlucky.

Four of us called in on spec on Easter Monday evening and had a drink st the bar.We ordered on fish and chips, one steak pie, one surloin steak and one duck leg in Cranbury sauce. All the dishes were served promptly and were cooked to perfection. I have read the complaints about the d for etc. OK it may be a bit dated but that's what gives the place it's atmosphere. Most importantly it is spotlessly clean. All the plumbing in the washrooms has been updated and the exterior is being renovated. Have eaten here before and enjoyed a Christmas lunch here. Don't really know what some people expect. In my experience the staff have always been fine.

We went to the sun Inn to celebrate a birthday ......upon arrival we told the lady behind the bar that we had a table booked for six pm.....this was greeted with a shrug of the shoulders and then being told to order drinks and wait in the bar whilst the table was readied...we did not have long to wait until we were told to go through to the dining room,we ordered and waited not too long for our meal,my wife and I both ordered sirloin steak, mine with port and stilton sauce ,hers with garlic sauce...after a wait of about 15/20 minutes the food arrived....the steaks were more fat and gristle than meat and the garlic sauce was basically mayonnaise with garlic in....most of the meat came home in a poop bag for the dogs,we had to attract the waitress attention to order dessert we eventually got one dessert after about half an hour wait and then 20 minutes or so later we had to get the waitress attention again to remind her that we had in fact ordered two desserts, this came after another 15 minutes....we will not be going back.

We each were given a bucket load of chips and a plate of fresh veg and everything was piping hot and very tasty. We were too full for a pud! The prices were reasonable too. We had booked a table and all enjoyed a lovely main and dessert. We Strongly recommend anybody who would like a HALLOWEEN night out to book a meal at the Sun Inn and maybe dress up a little. Called for a quick drink on a lovely sunny day and was looking to sit out the front. There were lots of cars and several people outside. Went in and the room on the right was full. Went to the left and it was empty. I was trying to make up my mind whicht real ale to have and we were told that the pub was shut because they had a function taking place. It is a shame that we couldn't have a quick drink outside in the sunshine. On checking their opening times afterwards, I found that the place is shut after 3pm and to be fair we were probably a few minutes after that.

It’s been a year since me and my partner have been to this pub, and we pledged to do it every year. I think it is turning out to be more of an ordeal than a treat. Today there is so many up and coming trendy places with deals on that you would think you need to keep up with as a savvy pub manager. This place is the exception - 80’s decor, 60’s tunes, carpet held together with duct tape. Manager is so scary and never cracks a smile. At least this year she stipulated clearly that we could only sit on a table laid for two! Even the waitress, who could not have been nicer commented that the tables weren’t big enough - 2 plates, 2 side plates, 2 baskets of chip (think baskets went out in the 70’s) basket of onion rings and a jug of peppercorn sauce ( which tasted more like curry sauce). Carrots with salad and steak - what is that all about? Overall a very dated and over priced meal ( which was very good all be it a bit old fashioned) where the landlady gets moodier and more frightening! But yes, we will be back next year, if not just for the excellent salted caramel ice cream!

I work in an elderly care home with people who suffer with dementia, we came here for Sunday lunch with a few residents, we had booked the day before so didn't just turn up, we phoned on the morning we were going the first time was to find out the price of a small plate with our residents only eating very small amounts to be told bluntly "what do you mean a small plate! " then phoned again to say we may be late and not arrive until around 2pm to be told "we stop serving at 2 so if you get here then you won't get served!"again the woman was very blunt, anyway we arrived at 13:50 and told to wait in the bar as our table wasn't ready, we waited for over 10 minutes which was had with our residents who were getting restless. When we were seated we were given menus which said they did child portions which I pointed out to my co worker only to be told by the owner who walked past " no, no we dont do them any more " so we had to order a full meal for them all which they hardly touched, the food wasn't up to much, frozen Yorkshires, the 'roast' potatoes hadn't been roasted they had been deep fried, the meat hadn't been freshly cooked, it looked like the sliced meat you would get from a deli counter so they more than likely buy it in, I won't be back here that's for sure, you would think they would have made an exception on portion sizes with our residents being elderly dementia sufferers which they did know before hand but no they were too greedy!

The food is always nice and the portions are on the large side. The menu has remained largely unchanged for as long as I can remember but I kind of like that! Prices are reasonable , service is good and the pub itself although possibly not decorated to everyone's taste is actually pretty cool. Quirky probably describes it well. The bar is large and has a real fire while the restaurant is also spacious. IThe Sun relies on passing trade or customers who drive there as it is set in a fairly remote location albeit by a busy road. It's certainly worth stopping in for a bite to eat if yr in the area.

We were told to find a table in the large restaurant where only two other tables were occupied. We found a table near the window and the pleasant waitress took our order. Minutes later we heard the landlady bark at the waitress as to why were we on a table for 4? The lovely waitress then had the embarrassing task of asking us to move because it was a rule that 2 could not sit at a larger table!so we to a much smaller table. I'm in a generous mood, and an average rating seems a little harsh, although I'm not convinced that 'very good' is entirely befitting. We visited for dinner en route home on a Monday evening, after a day out on the bike (motorbike). The pub and restaurant were both quiet. The décor is typically pub-restauranty (if there is such a style) with patterned carpets, pink swags and green velour curtains to co-ordinate. The silver Christmas style flower arrangement didn't fit with the other arrangements, and seemed to be a sad wee leftover from previous festivities. The wide corridor to the toilets was decorated in a much more contemporary fashion, with somewhat creepy eye patterned wallpaper. The menu was good, with a fair helping of pub-grub dishes, and we both opted for scampi. The portions were immense, and account for the 'very good' rating really, as it makes for excellent value for money. The atmosphere was a little lacking, but that could just have been the Monday night effect. It didn't bother us to be honest, and would not stop us returning for a good pub meal. In fact I would choose to go there over some of the more local and more highly rated establishments.

A Sunday lunch, and now I can compare it with several others in the area.Put simply this is a reasonable meal, but the atmosphere and decor and management attitude make it a somewhat awkward and uncomfortable experience.Tables for two are not sufficiently big enough. Subsequently, you feel a bit hemmed in. I often feel like eating at two separate tables just so I can breath and eat at the same time. And wave to my partner on the next. The very young staff are of an age where they can put your food and water onto tables, but not yet past the age of maturity sufficiently to enable them to procure you an alcoholic one, for that you must tire yourself out and collect it by you, or yours from the bar. It is I am sad to say, the reason that I refuse to leave a tip, as I consider it an offence to DIY. Not the fault of the staff in general - just the command from higher up the chain. As for the food, well the plate is hot, the food is good and well cooked, and plentiful. It's just the two small but unavailable tactics (seating and DIY drinks) that sour the palette. At 2pm when the rush was over and hardly anyone was in the dining area, a couple arrived for lunch. He looked in his late seventies and struggled to get seated onto an unoccupied table set for four. The poor man looked all in - but that didn't deter the waitress from forcing him to move to a two person table. There was a murmuring from the rest of us of shame and disbelief. It was then that I decided, that for another five shillings and an extra 7 miles, I could have gone to a roast buffet eat all you like, where the staff care, and can wait on you unfettered, and the tables are virtually eat where you want. I think the sun has just gone down.

Husband had cheese, with a pot of Branston. Accompanied by freshly prepared salad. Plain and substantial and flavoursome, and very reasonably priced. Staff were friendly and service good. We'll definitely be back.

We visited one Thursday evening after a hectic day. When we arrived there was one couple just about to leave the restaurant area. All of the tables were set in the dimly lit eating area as if expecting a large coach party to descend at any moment - a little spooky! The food was pleasant enough but there was just too much of it.No room for dessert so we paid and left. Sorry but won't be back in a hurry. We were extremely hungry as for various reasons we hadn't eaten since early morning however, even our huge apetites were defeated by the enormous portions!

Was taken out for my birthday to nearby 'Locomotion' steam railway museum at Shildon. Called in at the Sun Inn for lunch (Saturday 10th Oct). Pub was almost empty so we sat in the restaurant where I had one of the best pub meals ever! Between the three of us we had Cumberland sausage, Cod and Chicken with loads of freshly cooked vegetables. All for around £27 for the three of us. And very tasty it was too.

Booked a table for party of 7 and assured the venue was accessible only to be greeted with a step at the entrance that my husband's wheelchair couldn't climb. We approached the manager about a ramp for access but they had an appalling attitude and wouldn't even address my husband who was stuck outside. Needless to say, we were turned away due to there being no access which, as far as I know, is a law requirement. Words cannot express how disgusted we were at the poor hospitality. Didn't get to try the food but if it's as disgusting as the staff behaviour, you can keep it.

As another reviewer noted rudeness seems to be the routine. We were virtually shouted at by a woman that came running out of the pub telling us not to park in the large and virtually deserted car park (we parked as far away from the entrance as possible even though there was a wide expanse between us and the door). She probably felt that by throwing in a "please" sufficed as polite, well it didn't mitigate the aggressive demeanour, near shouting, unhelpfulness and general rude behaviour.I've never been bullied like this before I've even walked in a place. Well we got in the car and drove off.A serious change to customer interaction is needed.

If you are looking for a friendly place with good customer service don't visit here, we've rarely encountered such rudeness. Can't comment on the food as we didn't get that far. Won't be visiting again.

We called here for lunch a few days ago. We had not booked but that was not a problem. There was a good choice of dishes on the menu and our order was taken quickly..We did not have a long wait for our meals. The food was excellent, home made, hot and very tasty.Service was very good and the dining room was clean and comfortable if a little old fashioned. When I went to write this review I was very surprised by some of the previous reviews. Our experience was very good.We will return.

We have eaten here quite a few times and never been disappointed. The Sun Inn perhaps lacks kerb appeal and the decor is rather dated but it is very clean and comfortable. The menu although not large is varied with plenty of options. The food is excellent, freshly prepared, hot and tasty. The portions are very large. We are a party of 8-10 and everyone has been very satisfied with the food quality.Service is good and we have never had a long wait after ordering our meals. We always go for lunch so know nothing about evening service. We will continue to go here for some of our regular lunch dates.Give the Sun Inn a try, it could be worth it.

We visited the Sun after an absence of some 11 years half expecting to find it had changed hands - but no - we were relieved to find that it was the same as ever. This was for a Sunday lunch. The menu was standard Sunday lunch fare plus a vegetarian option. We opted for the roast lamb, and a large oval plate arrived speedily, laden with lamb and mint sauce (in a little glass dish), yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower in a white sauce, roast parsnip and carrots and plenty of gravy. The vegetables were excellent - not a bit overcooked or sad. The meat was so tender that it was almost difficult to eat in that it fell apart on the fork. My first thought was that I would never finish it all, but not many minutes later I had an empty plate in front of me. We both had desserts, mine was a date and pecan pie with ice cream which I thoroughly enjoyed. We asked for two coffees and a large coffee pot arrived with enough coffee for 2 or 3 cups each - and they were decent sized cups too.The waitresses, all young, were clad in the whitest of white blouses and looked very smart, and they did their job very well. Full marks to whoever trains them.We shall undoubtedly return before too long.

A very abrupt lady served us whom I assume is the owner. It's a very traditional pub with a limited menu (which I have no problem with at all)I ordered a coke and the post mix wasn't right so it was swapped for a small bottle.I ordered a rare steak, which wasn't the cheapest steak I've had. It came with chips (frozen chips) peas carrots and salad ?! Mushrooms had odd texture like they had been precooked or left under a hot plate for some time. The steak was more medium-well done than rare, and a bit on the chewy side.It did seem like it was a local pub for local people, and I can't say I will return in a hurry. Distinctly average

Some of the reviews seem damning here but we have eaten here a few times and have yet to be given a bad meal. The staff are often ran off their feet on a Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime but the service is still fine. The cost of the food is good and you never leave wanting more. A decent range of ales and ciders seem to be on offer and although there is no kids menu smaller portions of certain selections are available. Not the most child friendly pub but our daughter loves this pub and at 4yrs old its often hard to get her attention unless she has an activity. But the sausage and mash (does not come in small size) and the desserts are a winner with both us and her!

I was totally bemused after a visit here.We two sat down at a table for four and were quickly told off and told (not escorted) to use a table set for two. Having already requested drinks at the bar a nubile nymphette of school age came up to us dressed like a waitress and informed me that none of the staff could serve drinks as they were under age. (This was on a Sunday lunchtime) and so I had to get up and go to the bar and collect them myself. Having ordered the pork and trimmings and I the lamb, we waited. It arrived ten minutes later. The serving girl had problems with the hot plate, but at least the cloth she held dug into my gravy rather than her thumbs. Apparently the pork was wonderful but my lamb slices were extremely thin and could have been anything. The food was certainly well proportioned and seconds were not required. Half way through my meal, the couple in the next table left and the "lady in charge" came over with another nubile nymphette and proceded to dress the table ready for the next unsuspecting victims. Had it been the young lady who stuck her buttocks uncomfortably close to my face, I may not have minded, but it was not.I truly wanted to like this place and it's food. However, having been twice now, I can only say be prepared.

We called here for a meal on a weekday evening - the sign on the door demanding 'smart casual' attire wasn't exactly welcoming, nor was the greeting ( or lack of it) from the lady at the bar. However we persevered, trying to hide our scruffy trousers under the table in the 70s time-warp dining room. The food quality was mixed - excellent chips and dessert, steak overdone, ancient shrivelled mushrooms. Quite expensive for what it was - for a few pounds more you can get lunch in the Michelin- starred place just down the road! Not worth a visit when there are better places close by.

We had a very similar experience to "Frosty". We stopped off at this very nice looking pub for some lunch and waited at the bar for a good few minutes to be served. We went into the restaraunt area and the waitress who we believe to be the owner of the establishment told us in a very unfriendly manner to sit at a table set for 2. We asked if she minded if we sat at one of the tables set for 4 (It had approx 12 tables unoccupied at this time and 1 person sat in the bar) She spoke to us in a very abrupt way and told us in no uncertain terms that we were to sit where we had been told to.We decided to leave our drinks and leave at that moment. When we asked if we could settle the tab and we asked her very politely why there was a problem seeing as they werent busy. She again was very rude and told us that nobody else in a couple in the restaraunt was allowed to sit anywhere but a table for 2 so we couldnt either and if we didnt like it then we should leave. (Which is exactly what we were doing) Never have I experienced such rude, bad mannered and unfriendly customer service as we had that day. Its a wonder they get any custom at all while she is working..Pandi

I went to the Sun Inn as a birthday treat. We had read some bad reviews beforehand but still thought we would give the place the benefit of he doubt and we are so glad we did. The restaurant was lovely and clean and the service we received was very good and the food was excellent . We can't fault the place but it was just a shame that it was empty. Please give this restaurant a try. We will happily go there again with friends and family.

Probably the worst welcome I have ever received. Tried to spark any kind of conversation but to no avail. Very rude lady working in the wrong proffession and I think she was the propieter. Very un child friendly, no high chairs or kids menu. Limited menu for adults and most things unavailable. Food was poor, uncooked pastry top on pie and very watery veg lasagne. Wasn't offered any puddings but wouldn't have bothered anyway. Felt as welcome as a fart in a spaceman suit.

Now called the Charcoa Carvery since its refurb recently and I was impressed with the new decor which was luxurious and classy. The staff were pleasant and eager to assist and for all it was Sunday lunchtime there was no queu to get served and plenty of choice re seating arrangements for all we had not booked. I chose the turkey which was perfect and my family all had beef which they enjoyed. There was a good selection of vegetables (even salad if we had wanted it) but I did find it difficult to access the veges as there is nowhere to put your plate down and you need one hand to open the lid and another to serve the veges. Also the containers at the back of the vegetable servery were very inaccessible - this must have been designed by a very tall person with no regard for shorter customers and anyone with a disability or only able to use one hand would have been at a severe disadvantage. Also we never discovered the sauces until we returned to select our dessert as the sauces are set aside from the actual carvery and vegetable area. In the past you paid at the end and it was all the same price. Now you buy a ticket at the beginning but the meals are more expensive than the carvery selection so how do you know what you actually want until you are at the servery and by then its too late - you have either paid for carvery or paid for a meal so that is a strange set up I found. BUT getting back to the food and that was good, plentiful and hot. It is described as the 'ultimate carvery' and I think that is rather optimistic - its tasty and the ambience is lovely but a few practical tweaks in my opinion are needed. at the vegetable servery and make customers aware that the sauces are available. I enjoyed my trio of mini desserts and the assistant brought the hot drinks to the table when she had made them. A pleasant afternoon while the piano man played in the background.

Ordered two 'Croque Monsieur' and what arrived was two ham and cheese toasties lathered in poor quality English mustard? Why English Mustard? With stale crisps and wilted lettuce. Very poor and given the price quite surprising, especially given that there are numerous much nicer cafés in the city. Staff rather surly as well.
