This is tough as the staff and customer service were great but the food was dire. This is our 3rd bad experience here. Once told off for raping instead of just being asked to go outside, once for autistic grandson being told off for bad behaviour and now, far more recently vile food. Curry was inedible. I'm not a fussy eater but this was gross. Fish & chips were fine, standard. But in fairness I got offer of another dish but went for full refund. Staff were polite and handled situation perfectly but honestly I've never seen or tasted such a revolting curry. Three strikes and I'm out. Won't be going back again. Sorry old well. Lovely beer garden though!!

I cannot fault this place. The room was huge, the bathroom was massive, the bed was enormous! The owners have successfully combined their own culture with that of the Dales and created something unique and very special. My fiancé has mobility issues (but can do stairs) and nothing was too much trouble. We both had a lovely stay and will definitely be back.

Ok so always start with a positive.....the room was huge and very quaint. Decent size double bed and single bed, sink in room and had ensuite toilet. Shower big enough for our 3 year old granddaughter only. Well what can I say apart from that....it was awful! Don't eat in the restaurant.....mix of everything but nothing good, staff had no idea what they were doing! So as had breakfast included thought yep can't get that wrong....I've had better service in a roadside cafe! Yep and it felt like a greasy spoon, out of 8 fried eggs only 2 were decent rest poor. Don't mind helping myself to buffet but not even salt or pepper on tablets everything in packets... Staff too busy singing to serve guests be ok but they couldn't hold a tune! So for £139 find yourself somewhere else

Popped in after doing a walk to the Abbey and back along the river. The food menu is different offering tradition pub grub along with Indian and Chinese dishes. We sat in the lovely beer garden, I had a naan wrap and my wife a fried rice dish and both were excellent. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Great place!

You absolutely HAVE to try this place. It's a small, quaint pub on the Main Street, with a large bay window to look out & people watch. The owner is so passionate & knowledgable. Three of us had Thali: chicken, lamb & beef. One of us had pie & mash & every one of us thoroughly enjoyed it. The bhajis were so tasty. The curries themselves varied in strength but each was delicious in its own right without being too hot.

Great period pub with very friendly, helpful staff. Prime location! We stayed in a twin room, basic but clean and comfortable. The food was recommended by the bar staff and described as authentic Indian cuisine. Unfortunately it was not to my taste and very spicy. I couldn’t eat it. I had Scampi and chips instead. Not good quality scampi , but edible. Breakfast was ok, but not great. No vegetarian sausages, or hash browns, cold tomatoes. Again edible. I would stay again, although probably have a meal elsewhere.

Where do I start with this. It was supposed to be an Indian Meat Thali. The menu said you had a choice of curry, but when I purchased our meals, there was no choice. It was allegedly a Butter Chicken curry, but it was the wrong colour for a start and was absolutely swimming in grease, totally tasteless with very little meat. I tried the onion bargie first and found the small peices were burnt to a crisp and were tasteless. We weren't sure if we had popoadoms or a roti, but the crispless thing I tried to use as a popodom was full of bubles and just fell apart. The thing I thought was a roti was as greasy as hell. I was hungry so just ate them, but my wife couldn't follow suit. I wish I hadn't ether as it feels like a heavy weight in my stomache now. Needless to say we will never venture in there again.

Like many I guess you are worried about the Corvid Social Distancing controls in pubs, I will come straight to the point, The Old Well Inn controls in force on our visit last night were exemplary, ordering from an allocated table by the app (do before if possible), drinks and food service directly to your table. Now the food, we were delighted by the starters of Samosas and Onion Bhajis, second to none. The Thalli mains we had, Lamb and Pork were outstanding, authentic and so tasty, the Paratha, Poppadoms and accompaniments were fantastic. We took advantage of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme and the cost should have been £39 which under normal circumstances was great value but we paid £19,an absolute steal. Visited Barnard Castle recently on a cold wet Saturday. We were cold and hungry and due to great reviews decided to eat at Old Well Inn. We were not disappointed. This is a small old fashionedl pub with a traditional market town atmosphere. Our party of three adults and two kids were warmly welcomed and soon heated up in the cosy surroundings. My wife and I ordered the steak and ale pie, without any great expectation as the price was so cheap.I can honestly say it was the most tasty and wholesome pie I have ever tasted containing loads of tender beef soaked in a sumptuous gravy and complimented by a generous helping of chips and peas. Will certainly be back just to order that pie again.

Most welcoming upon arrival. 12.45 ish there were three couples only in these extensive premises. We ate in a conservatory type area at the rear, where the tables were immaculately and unnecessarily spread with pristine white table cloths, upon which were displayed a couple of menus, salt and pepper shakers and a bowl of sachets of sauces. Cutlery and serviettes were presented in a colourful (again unnecessary) miniature bucket. Food here is edible and cheap. That’s about all I can say.

We had stopped half way home from a lovely day out together and decided to have a light bite before getting back on the road. The atmosohere of this restaurant was lovely, candle on the table and really homey. When it came to us ordering our food though it turned into a nightmare. I ordered a chicken panini and my boyfriend ordered a chicken and mozzarella panini. When the waiter brought them out there was a chicken and mushroom panini (which we didn't order) and...well I couldn't tell you what the other one was as it ended up on the floor. Accidents happen I understand that, i accepted the chicken and mushroom as I didn't mind, but then I had to wait for my boyfriends meal to be remade before we could enjoy our food together. 5-10 minutes later - The chicken in both our meals was dry and hard like it had been sat under a hot lamp far too long. Had to ask for cutlery to eat our salads. When it came round to settling our bill we were whacked with £26, turns out an extra main was added onto our bill which we didn't order and they charge by the half for drinks so a pint of coke cost us nearly £4! Over priced on drinks and poor service, glad to be home. Wouldn't recommend.

I booked this pub/b&b; almost entirely on the basis of the availability of what sounded like wonderful Indian food on the premises, as I saw not having to go out on a cold winters night looking for somewhere to eat as a bonus. Food is served in the evening from 6pm to 9pm so we sat down in the restaurant at about 7.45pm and ordered two thaalis and a bottle of wine, a deal heavily promoted on the pub's website as being an "Indian weekend special" "Available Fridays and Saturdays". Not only were thaalis not available, the alternative, a choice of three curries, was actually a choice of just two curries. There were only a few people eating, so thaalis couldn't have been sold out, they were simply not on the menu. Extremely disappointing ! Fortunately we found a fantastic Indian restaurant a short walk up the main street.

My partner and I have never been amazed by the food or service here but we thought we would give them another try recently. The bar service was very slow and the lady seem a little flustered even though there were only three tables in eating that included my partner and I. We ordered two starters when they arrived they weren’t as explained in the menu and everything tasted flavourless and old. We left more than half of our starters as we were both not enjoying them at all. The Mains £10.95 for the old well burger. Old is what it was. The bread bun was stale and the burger was very dry and was not cooked fresh that day, my seafood chowder it was warm not hot and said it came with a toasted cob roll. It came with a mini hard white bread bun. The venue lacked atmosphere and we didn’t feel welcomed. Very disappointed with our overall evening and will not be returning. £40.65 for a meal that was awful and two drinks.

Visited here recently and I have scored two points for this venue, which is a "poor" rating"; 1 point is for the female bar member who was very pleasant and informative of the menu; the other is for the lovely conservatory and beer garden which is very pleasant. If I had only been visiting for drinks I would have scored it excellent. However there were 3 of us in the party and we all needed to eat. My husband and I were tempted by the indian thali including a drink , as we enjoy indian food very much and eat their curries every few weeks. When it arrived we took a sharp intake of breath as it looked nothing like a thali we have had in many authentic indian restaurants, in fact it looked quite disgusting and very unappetising before we even picked up cutlery. The rice was plain boiled with lots and lots and lots of frozen peas in it; then came one of the side dishes which consisted of kidney beans and some other kind of mini black beans, which tasted disgusting. I tried adding some of the many peas from my plate to enhance the taste but this didn't work. The chicken curry which I ordered was very average at best, and again looked most unappetising. My husband chose the lamb curry and was faced with firstly, two huge chunks of what looked like potato wedges, then when he dug further to look for the lamb he was faced with a whole boiled egg cut in half. If there's anything we wouldn't expect to see and wouldn't want to see in a lamb curry it's potato wedges and boiled eggs. Added to this we had another side dish which looked (and tasted) like cubes of roast potato with guess what.........another large helping of peas but of a different variety, possibly tinned rather than frozen?. This dish was semi-tasty and did have a touch of spice to it. I struggled to eat my food but by husband was unable to continue with his, as there are three food items he cannot tolerate and two of those are peas and boiled eggs, hence our choice of indian food!! His meal was taken away and another brought to him and this time the lamb curry had meat in it and no peas or boiled egg! However the whole experience was starting to go downhill and by now we were wishing we had gone somewhere (anywhere) else, therefore he didn't enjoy his meal at all. My mother who is 80+ enjoys a very varied diet and can eat most things and doesn't complain if something is not quite right; however she was most disappointed with her choice of haddock (the frozen triangular variety), handcut chips (more like undercooked potato wedges, probably the same as those used in the lamb curry) and mushy peas which she described as tasteless. She ate very little of the fish, left the rest, and was most disappointed for all of us as she had wanted to treat us to Friday tea and eveything was going so well when we sat out in the lovely beer garden overlooking the rolling countryside. Shame we didn't stay there and eat elsewhere! In our opinion the food really was disgusting on every level and although I would recommend this place for drinks, I would seriously give the indian thali a miss and consider carefully the fish dish.

My husband and I often visit The Old Well, either as a couple of with friends. We love the friendliness of the owners and staff and it's got a homely atmosphere. We have enjoyed the Sunday roast here a few times, and also the homemade curry and Indian sharing platters. You never leave hungry! Good value for money and tasty and well presented food.

Have visited the Old Well many times over the years, and it gets better and better. Recent decoration is very welcoming. The food we had, authentic Indian Thalis were better than any Indian restaurant. Above all the dog is always welcome! Thanks and hope to visit you soon.

Visited as a large family and the staff were brilliant, they were extremely friendly and really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and look after us. The food wasn’t the best, but it certainly wasn’t the worst either. An improvement in the food is definitely needed. Prices were very reasonable and it was a good visit, If they could serve nicer food the place would be great.

Like stepping back to the 90s, when it was last decorated and cleaned. Shame really as the beer was good and pub had a lovely sunny garden to sit in. Food tasted of burnt oil. We were convinced the prices went up when they realised we were tourists.

Following a lovely walk by the river we headed to this pub to quench our thirst. We received a very friendly welcome from the owners and enjoyed our drinks in the lovely garden before ordering some food. The home made pakoras were amazing! I just wished I'd have had a large enough appetite to have sampled one of the home made curries too.

We have just returned from the old well Inn because we had been recommended for the curry night we were a bit apprehensive about pub curries but as the owner's are Indian we gave it a try and I must say we were not disappointed our meal was beautiful my partner had the spicy chicken curry kerala style and I had the lamb curry both served with rice, a paratha and yoghurt and mango chutney and we thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful we would definitely recommend

we visited last year for a meal last year with family which was mediocre to sat the least, but as the pub has changed owners we thought we would give it another go. Mistake! Ceasar salad - burnt chicken, saltey, over seasoned and the warm roll not to be seen. Hubbys steak pie was mediocare. We will be back for drinks but we will not waste our hard saved cash on over priced, poor quality food. Better places in barney for food!

On arriving at Barnard Castle we popped in here for a drink. It was late Sunday afternoon and both bars were quite busy. Clean and comfortable and served an excellent pint of Timothy Tailor Landlord Friendly staff

As well as staying, we had a meal with friends one night. We had Indian as the cook and proprietor is Indian. Everything was cooked from fresh and it was very tasty. Onion Bhajis were particularly nice as they were straight from the pan, unlike many that are pre-cooked and heated. Two types of chicken and both were brilliant as was the stuffed paratha. Our 3 friends are plain eaters and they had fish and chips, so I had a taster of some of this as well - again, brilliant haddock, chips and peast. Huge portions, so best to get the smallest dish and not even the regular size. The large size would fall off the plate!

Popped in for a few at about 9:30pm. The bar area (first left) we were in was fairly empty (only another group of four women). I’m assuming there was another bar area as we had to ring the bell for service.

Excellent Pub, have stayed and eaten here twice and have never been disappointed great staff, lovely rooms, nothing too much trouble not even our 40 Kilo German Shepherd who was welcomed on all occasions. We have even booked rooms for family this weekend and are looking forward to Sunday lunch there. Cannot praise this establishment enough

Ordered two 'Croque Monsieur' and what arrived was two ham and cheese toasties lathered in poor quality English mustard? Why English Mustard? With stale crisps and wilted lettuce. Very poor and given the price quite surprising, especially given that there are numerous much nicer cafés in the city. Staff rather surly as well.
