Me and my mum and my 3rd nana Dawn went here, we ordered our food and i got some Fanta orange to drink and then our food came. I had cod bites and mam and Dawn had chips with gravy, and we enjoyed it. Will be coming back.

On my usual Christmas visit to County Durham and I was NOT going to let the plague stop me having one of my favourite treats. Fish and chips at Clems! All set up for “social whatsitting” and the two staff on duty were brilliant. What difficult times for them all. But the cod was cooked to order and chips perfect. On a wet miserable day, the sun (yet again) rose temporarily into the sky. Thank you for being there and for creating “normal” for a short time. I’ll be back in the restaurant soon I hope.

Called today for two cod and chips. Found price to be really steep at £14 for two takeaway. Despite been freshly cooked to order they were only just warm when we got home after five minutes. Have only used this takeaway once before some years ago and will not be back at these prices. Much better fish and chip takeaways around.

Went in for fish and chips, I decided to have a Mince Pie as not stakes pies. Seating is fixed like Morrisons cafe was 20 years ago. My dads fish was ok, But chips undercooked. My Pie cam with gravy in a cup, Chips were soggy and not cooked long enough. We were given the bill before the food arrived and when we said we pay by contactless. We though this is no good. Told it was the owners decision. We thought incredible in 2019. I wished we walked out. Once food was served no one asked if it was ok. Next time it is Morrisons cafe. Very poor overall

As I was out late on the bus, I headed for Chester le Street and had a coffee. Held my hunger at bay as I had decided by now, to have cod and chips for a breakfast. I have walked past Clems SO many times, and I knew where I was aiming for!! Didn’t disappoint. Brilliant cod and chips and a bottle of beer. What more could you ask for? Service was excellent. And no wait! As my meal arrived, the sun came out! Yay! Begone rainy day.

Having lived in the Chester-le-Street area for almost 30 years and having visited Chester-le-Street on numerous occasions this was my first ever visit to this long established Fish and Chip Restaurant. Myself and the other half where on our way to pick the youngest nephew up when we called in here for lunch. We'd been doing what women love most a bit of shopping and as we past the entrance the other half said "I just fancy some fish and chips". So on that note we pop-in at first we were a bit disappointed as all the tables were full but were promptly told there were tables upstairs. We made our way up to the light airy room and took our seats. The waitress brought us menu's and took our drinks order. When she returned we placed our order of regular haddock and chips and a large haddock and chips both with a side of mushy peas. The meals arrive piping hot sent up from the kitchen below. Knowing now what we do I'd suggest on the next visit we'll opt for a small fish for the other half and a regular for me and one portion of mushy peas as the banquet we received would have easily fed a family of four. The fish was delicious and the batter not over the top just the right covering (unlike most places were all you seem to get is batter with a slither of fish).

For the price the fish and chips are average. When you see the fish that you actually get there are places that will serve a much bigger portion of fish for the price. I find that their prices are a little steep.

Still trying to find a fish and chip shop who can actually make a good chip, the potatoes are rubbish end up with a few average sized chips and the rest are to throw away or they are soggy. When I was a kid my mother would make proper chips which tasted like proper chips chunky crispy actually had a taste,so unfortunately I’m still looking. The fish was fine but Why is it so hard to get the chips a decent size and cooked properly.

We decided to call to Clems as we were in Chester-le-Street. The restaurant was clean and the staff well presented. The place doesn't accept card, we had to go to the cashpoint before the order was taken. They then want payment before they serve you the food. The food was tasteless. Service wasn't great. The menu boards were all misspelt too. I won't be returning. Expensive for what it was.

Went for a "sit-down" fish and chip meal to Clems in Chester-le-street. We have not been in the retaurant for many months so wondered how it had changed. The meal x2 fish and chips, one portion of peas, pot of tea and a can of orange came to nearly £18!!! When the meal came expected something very good, instead it was very dissapointing. Both meals were, at best luke warm, and the chips were like the "scraps" you are given when you buy a packet of chips and they put the "scraps" on too. Very, very dissapointing, well over priced and poor quality.

A friend came to see me at short notice. I asked him "Do you like fish and chips?"It was 1130 am and the shop wasn't busy. I wanted to get in there before the kids came out of school, as Clem's is very near a large comprehensive. We asked for a single portion of chips, goodness knows how big a large portion would be. But I got large portions of cod , and by large they meant huge. And tasty. The batter was crisp, the fish tender and delicious. I have used Clem's many times. It has always been good, and unlike other reviewrs I have never found a hair in it. I wouldn't go back if I did. Can't comment about the restaurant, as I've always used the takeaway.

I am rarely in the North East - but when I visit, I love to get fish and chips - so much nicer than I get at home. Today I tried out Clem's - and it was a real treat to get fish patties. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal - which I had in a box as I walked along the street. Will definitely be back next time I visit. Only wish I could get fish patties and a bag of chip with batter on in the south of England! (suggestions for places to do so very welcome!)

Called for fish and chips, as it happens about 15 minutes before they were due to close for the evening, maybe that was the problem.2 staff working and I guess they were keen to finish for the evening, fish is freshly cooked which would normally good, but when I got the fish home, it hadn't been cooked for long enough. The chips were the opposite, been warmed up constantly and were hard as a result, so overall not the best experience from a fish and chip shop, shame really.

Been to Clem's three times for takeaway fish and chips and decided I needed to give some feedback.Food wise, it's okay..... I don't know where the people who mention " huge portions " normally go to eat, but my experience is that the portions - especially the fish - are on the small side. Chips are okay, but honestly, the fish seem to be cut in two. The real problem with Clem's is the staff. They have absolutely NO idea of what customer service is about, and it's all they can do to ask you what you want.Unsmiling faces, and no interpersonal skills whatsoever. Hey, if you don't like working in a chippy and you can't be bothered to be polite to the people who are paying your wages...... here's an idea. GO AND WORK SOMEWHERE ELSE!I for one won't be giving Clem's my business any time in the near ( or distant ) future. I work too hard for my money to give it to sour faced harridans behind their counter who have no basic communication skills.

I've given it 3 go's which I think is fair and everytime rude staff who look like they really can't be bothered, overpriced and the greasiest food ever. You can feel the grease on your lips the next day after bath shower several brushes of teeth and mouth wash, but worst of all every time I have had a bad stomach during the night, not vomiting but terrible cramps and as a result no sleep. I ordered Cod & chips from a young lass who had a face like a smacked backside, her manner was bordering on surely. Although the meal was satisfactory In most respects it was minuscule and because the fish was so small , it probably explains why 1/2 the fish was over cooked & chewy. Ordered two 'Croque Monsieur' and what arrived was two ham and cheese toasties lathered in poor quality English mustard? Why English Mustard? With stale crisps and wilted lettuce. Very poor and given the price quite surprising, especially given that there are numerous much nicer cafés in the city. Staff rather surly as well.

Now called the Charcoa Carvery since its refurb recently and I was impressed with the new decor which was luxurious and classy. The staff were pleasant and eager to assist and for all it was Sunday lunchtime there was no queu to get served and plenty of choice re seating arrangements for all we had not booked. I chose the turkey which was perfect and my family all had beef which they enjoyed. There was a good selection of vegetables (even salad if we had wanted it) but I did find it difficult to access the veges as there is nowhere to put your plate down and you need one hand to open the lid and another to serve the veges. Also the containers at the back of the vegetable servery were very inaccessible - this must have been designed by a very tall person with no regard for shorter customers and anyone with a disability or only able to use one hand would have been at a severe disadvantage. Also we never discovered the sauces until we returned to select our dessert as the sauces are set aside from the actual carvery and vegetable area. In the past you paid at the end and it was all the same price. Now you buy a ticket at the beginning but the meals are more expensive than the carvery selection so how do you know what you actually want until you are at the servery and by then its too late - you have either paid for carvery or paid for a meal so that is a strange set up I found. BUT getting back to the food and that was good, plentiful and hot. It is described as the 'ultimate carvery' and I think that is rather optimistic - its tasty and the ambience is lovely but a few practical tweaks in my opinion are needed. at the vegetable servery and make customers aware that the sauces are available. I enjoyed my trio of mini desserts and the assistant brought the hot drinks to the table when she had made them. A pleasant afternoon while the piano man played in the background.
