Really disappointed in our visit to Tesco’s cafe today, we ordered beans on toast and eggs which took nearly an hour to come. When my partner approached a member of staff to ask where our food was, she rudely said “if it’s about food, it’ll come soon” when served our food, the staff member did not apologise for the delay either. I can’t believe it would take almost an hour for beans on toast and some eggs… worst of all after all that wait, the food was lukewarm and not tasty, I know it’s a Tesco cafe but it’s not hard to make either of those meals and to be polite.

Absolutely horrendous going to automated touch screens……whatever happened to personal service, this is based on the fact that i like very weak coffee, i now can’t have it my way🙄…..certainly won’t be going back to this tesco cafe…….only hoping that not all of them end up like this one at Durham!

The American lady was extremely polite but little can be said for the cafe its self. They made it all cash free as well as putting self serve tills in which don’t update to what they have sold out of. We order had to wait for the drinks to come then be there ld that every bit of food we ordered was sold out and when she came with different things they were dry and discussing. As well as the car it self has gone down hill very dirty and takes sticky

No I don't want to order by machine I don't want to pay by card for a simple coffee or juice for my daughter it's ridiculous. I'm no paying by card... Cash is my way.. me and many others Walked away today. We should have a choice of how we want to pay. Machines just putting people out of a job

Worst all day breakfast we have had in a long long time. Sausage rock hard, egg overcooked, hash browns poor quality. Sainsbury’s do a far better breakfast for same price and includes mushroom and tomato with substitutes if required, and always served with a smile. Tesco staff seem to have couldn’t care less approach. Where has the old Tesco Durham gone?

The staff here are fantastic. I visit regularly and am always struck by their kindness. They know I am disabled and they bring my hot drinks to the table for me if I am alone. I am quite immobile and tend to be a little unsteady. Wendy and Ryan are particularly attentive.

My husband and I had breakfast here yesterday. It was all fairly average and the portions seem smaller than ever. One sausage, one rasher of bacon, a few beans, an egg and a hash brown. Half a tomato as an added extra was 99p and one mushroom 99p!!!!!!?!!!!!. My husband had no butter with his toast so he asked a staff member for butter, her immediate response was there will be an extra charge! She then gave him a butter portion when he said he didn't get any with the one slice of toast. It all came to £17! Two breakfasts one tea and one latte. My husband asked for mushrooms instead of an egg and was still charged despite taking the egg off. Will not go again, feel like Tesco is ripping customers off in any way they can. Keep your breakfasts Tesco!!!

I visited the cafe for a cuppa and a cake. I asked the member of staff if any of the cakes/sweet treats were gluten free. Her reply was that they were not allowed to say!!! She said I would have to look through the allergen booklet behind the till. As I didn't have my reading glasses with me, having not anticipated needing to read through a small print booklet, I was none the wiser. I don't understand this policy of "we are not allowed to say", and have not come across it in any other cafe I have visited. Surely, knowing that increasing numbers of customers are gluten intolerant, Tesco would be able to educate their staff to give a more appropriate reply? I was extremely disappointed.

I reviewed Tesco Cafe at Durham favourably earlier this year; my opinion has changed since then. The place has deteriorated out of all recognition; and, no, it can't all be down to Covid. Most of the staff who were there when I last visited have now left. Their replacements are casual, rude and slapdash, with a take-it-or-leave it attitude; teas and coffees are dished out by an unsavoury looking, surly, very overweight individual with tattoos, who could do with a shave and a good deodorant; the food is either burnt or cold. The place now has the ambience of an old fashioned transport caff. I won't be back.

Tesco cafe never fails to dissapoint with their drinks, every single special drink or limited drink always under delivers or over delivers and tastes way too sweet or way too bitter with their hot chocolate with layer of oil on top and their "iced latte" just being bean water. Only good quality is the atmosphere and furniture.

Breakfast was truly awfull On arriving we had to wait while the lady finished her personal conversation with another member of staff, she was the only one in a white shirt. Breakfast arrived after a while and was cold, 1 tiny rasher of bacon if you could call it that, sausage well im not sure if it was or not it looked like a little chipolatta ! smallest fried egg ive ever seen and half of a squashed tomatoe, greasy fried bread with greasy undercooked hash browns Ohh and brown water masquerading as coffee ! Probably the worst capuccino I've ever had, apart from the last time I had one here. I thought I would give it another chance .MISTAKE. No care taken when pouring. The milk had not been frothed enough and was just slopped into the cup. The server didn't take any pride in what she was doing, it was just a case of "here you are get on with it". When she pushed it across the counter and I gave her a look that obviously conveyed my displeasure, she just carried on, no understanding of what I was expressing. Needless to say I won't make the same mistake again.

Been here before, breakfasts can be good, however I want to complain now, about the male staff member with blond/white hair and silly haircut. His attitude was disgraceful and he shouldn’t be in customer care of any description! I arrived at the queue and we ordered. Unfortunately there was a computer glitch, and although the assistant tried and tried, the cash machine refused to place the order until about the fourth attempt. By the time we had paid, the coffee we had ordered, had been on the counter waiting for us, for some time, and somewhat colder than expected. My wife had a ten minute wait and still nothing arrived, I having opted for a sandwich bought and brought up from downstairs. My wife was starting to get a bit fed up, and so went to complain after she noticed people after her in the queue getting served. I’m not sure what position this man was but he made excuses for the lateness of her hot sandwich but given his due he did chase it up, and arrived with it. The sausage sandwich was warm the plate cold, and by this time her coffee was stone cold. Asking this man for a replacement coffee, he took the cup and saucer and then disappeared off the face of the earth. After another ten minutes wait, my wife had to get up after finishing her sandwich only to discover he had gone, but once we had explained to the waitress she immediately ordered a coffee and brought it to our table, where I too was asked if I needed a replacement! I’m just flabbergasted at the mans attitude and think he needs retraining.

It has been a while since I visited The Cafe situated within the Tesco Extra store in Durham. Sadly little has changed it still offers basic food at a fair price. Bacon sandwich served on bloomer bread with a pot of tea £4. On my visit there was no warm welcome from staff and no newspapers available for customers to read. All in all, if you are desperate for a snack then The Cafe will meet your needs however personally I would look further afield like Chester’s only a 5 minute walk away within a shopping complex.

Went for breakfast as I needed some shopping and thought I’d save myself cooking. Ordered Eggs benedict and a cup of tea. Came to £6.50. When the food came out I noticed that the hollandaise sauce looked a peculiar consistency. I tasted it and found that it was cold and had been made from a concoction of mayonnaise salad cream and lemon juice. Absolutely disgusting. Not the hot buttery creamy sauce that I’d had elsewhere in the past. Very disappointed. Even more so as I took a bite and then put the cutlery on the plate and moved it to the other side of the table hoping someone would come over to ask if the food was ok. I made eye contact with an older lady and a young brown haired boy who worked there on multiple occasions and neither of them came to see what was wrong with the food. I didn’t want to call them over as I was alone and didn’t want to cause an awkward scene. I asked the girl who had served me at the till what the sauce was made from, on my way out, for her to patronise me by asking if I had never had it before. Won’t be returning.

I travel a lot with business so have to get a lot of different currencies to which they usually have there in stock but if they don't they get it promptly and efficiently. I visited the cafe for lunch with my husband and two children, aged 3 and 18 months. I told my husband I would meet him in there. Me and the kids arrived at the cafe where I encounter a major problem....no trays! I searched everywhere and all the staff were busy, so I couldn't even grab one to ask. I was left holding the youngest and had to wait for my husband to catch up. We decided to get the kids a lunch box each, containing 5 items, good value for money. However, it meant my husband had to juggle 10 items to the til! The female member of staff asked what would we like, I responded with "a tray for all this food please"...she was not amused. We gave our order and sat down. The food arrived quickly, which was great. I ordered the soup which came in a giant bowl and contained about 6 spoonfuls of soup with a little bun. My husband ordered ham, egg n chips which was a good size. He was less pleased with his coffee, too much milk, and my hot chocolate was the same....very weak. The cafe looked lovely and clean, but it is badly set out and not family friendly. Staff lacked friendliness and motivation, unlike the old cafe. I'm sorry to say we won't be returning.

Now called the Charcoa Carvery since its refurb recently and I was impressed with the new decor which was luxurious and classy. The staff were pleasant and eager to assist and for all it was Sunday lunchtime there was no queu to get served and plenty of choice re seating arrangements for all we had not booked. I chose the turkey which was perfect and my family all had beef which they enjoyed. There was a good selection of vegetables (even salad if we had wanted it) but I did find it difficult to access the veges as there is nowhere to put your plate down and you need one hand to open the lid and another to serve the veges. Also the containers at the back of the vegetable servery were very inaccessible - this must have been designed by a very tall person with no regard for shorter customers and anyone with a disability or only able to use one hand would have been at a severe disadvantage. Also we never discovered the sauces until we returned to select our dessert as the sauces are set aside from the actual carvery and vegetable area. In the past you paid at the end and it was all the same price. Now you buy a ticket at the beginning but the meals are more expensive than the carvery selection so how do you know what you actually want until you are at the servery and by then its too late - you have either paid for carvery or paid for a meal so that is a strange set up I found. BUT getting back to the food and that was good, plentiful and hot. It is described as the 'ultimate carvery' and I think that is rather optimistic - its tasty and the ambience is lovely but a few practical tweaks in my opinion are needed. at the vegetable servery and make customers aware that the sauces are available. I enjoyed my trio of mini desserts and the assistant brought the hot drinks to the table when she had made them. A pleasant afternoon while the piano man played in the background.
