The Sun Inn in Swindon

We was a bit wary of coming here for the evening as the write ups were bad,arrived Friday night and the 3 young ladies behind the bar was a credit to the place,we booked in easy by one of the 2 sisters and enjoyed a lovely evening drinking,each girl knowing exactly what we ordered when going to the bar,next morning we ate breakfast and was served by a really happy chap who was asking the guests what they had planed for the day,and showed so much attention to what people said,I was shocked to find out he was the person people moaned about as being rude,you couldn’t be further from the truth,keep up the good work Barry and staff

Curry was so hot I could not eat it fish and chips was served with carrots? Terrible food will not eat here again this is not the first time we have had a bad experience with food here but give the benefit of doubt but not improved at all

I have visited the Sun Inn many times over the years from 1960s, and never been disappointed by the service or the food. However myself and my husband and 4 friends pre-booked for 1st Aug for 6:30pm. A few of the dishes were not available, However we waited over an hour and a half for 3 of our friends to receive their meals, curry, which we were told it was medium hot and it was extremely hot!!! Three of us continued to wait for our meals and got really frustrated when they did not arrive and our friends had finished theirs!! We requested our money back as we had been waiting two hours for food. I've never seen the Sun Inn run so badly. It breaks my heart to write this review. I do hope Arkells look into this to ensure the standards are raised back to the very good standards that we know the Sun Inn can be. At the moment we are not planning on ever eating there again.

The chips came out cold, the mac cheese was Luke warm, only cheese taste was mozzarella on top, no cheese in the mac. This is not the first time we have been disappointed with the food here! We won't be coming again for food!

Having visited for dinner we were very disappointed with the food quality. Not as per description and cold, staff not interested in feedback. To interested in standing behind bar messing around, not clearing tables or tidy the general area. Won’t recommend or return to this establishment

Credit where credits due, upon return to the pub a few weeks later by members of the family, the food had improved (this time hot and tasty) and all comments were good, so yes well done The Sun, I too will return soon, its hard being consistent that we all appreciate, and you can't please all the people all off the time.....

We went as a family of 7, for Sunday lunch. It was very busy. The manager is very rude, and generally unpleasant surprised he is employed by Arkells. Staff do not appear to have had any training in food hygiene or indeed customer service at all. They had run out of lots of items on the menu. We will not be going back, and I would suggest people avoid the place.

Visited on 12th April for lunch. What a terrible mistake! Do not even bother, the food was cold and service was atrocious. Basically, do not waste your money here as the staff don’t even care when you complain.

Visited on: 14.04.2024- yes the food was nice but there was only 1 waitress who was working very hard but could see she was struggling ! The manager Barry was not very welcoming to his customers, and there was food on the menu that was not available and they didn’t take it off the menu. We ordered 3 chicken burgers and one of them looked like a children’s meal and when we spoke to the manager about it he was being very rude. It took ages to bring the food out as well. Will not be visiting again!

Went for a birthday celebration, booked a table and the staff put other people on the one we booked.Food cold and presentation really bad. Complained about cold food and a member of staff really couldn't have care less. Wouldnt recommend it to anyone.

Staff very friendly and the pub has a nice atmosphere. Had breakfast for two mornings as part of B&B deal. The room was lovely except that there were several dead and live ladybirds behind the curtains. The first breakfast was okay, but was heavy on the oil with saturated items and overcooked items. The second breakfast was inedible, dry and tasteless scrambled egg and toast. A shame as it is a lovely spot.

Seems we are not alone, gosh, this food was bad, and the deal is I offer up some of my hard earnt cash, you in return apply the same commitment as I did at my job and serve up a tasty, warm meal. You reneged on the deal quite comprehensively; the food was not tasty in any way whatsoever, and it was Luke warm, to take it further it was drab, soulless and barely edible. I feel cheated, simply terrible food, vow never to return. When are places ever going to learn simple maths, I will not recommend you, in turn the people I have mentioned it to will again pass on the message as a place to waste your money on, as you can see it's not long before you have more empty tables than full ones.

Mediocre food and the bad language coming out the mouths of some of the people at the bar is disgusting this is not a family pub I wouldn’t bring children here won’t be rushing back

To be honest, I have been coming here for years with my mum for a coffee, perhaps a light bite. Just to sit in the sunshine amongst the wonderful trees on the edge of Coate water. The problem is since the management has changed the experience every time is bloody awful. Today we had coffee and fancied a light snack so ordered a bowl of chips with some cheese. He put it on the table with no forks, no condiments and when we asked can we have some ketchup and maybe some forks, he said “yeh that’s all inside.” Did not offer to bring it either. Let me make this clear. There were around eight customers during our visit, so it is not as if he was run off his feet and besides a female member of staff seems to be doing most of the work. Doubt I will come back, and to be honest, I recommend the farm shop in Chiseldon which has a lovely backdrop of greenery and they do great food too. You won’t get alcohol there but you will certainly get a smile!! The hospitality industry has really suffered since Covid and the last thing. It needs is miserable people on the front line.

Came here for a roast - the roast option was gammon - who does that? Ordered off the main menu and drinks - only sell Guinness by the pint (ie can) on St Patrick’s Day and do not take £50 notes or set up tabs. The chips that came with the meal were unbelievably salty from the seasoning ALL over them! Asked for 2 new portions of chips that would be edible and the response was nothing we can do about it as you didn’t specifically request no salt on your chips. I tried pointing out that I also didn’t request an abnormal amount of salt all over the chips either but apparantly it is my mistake and my fault. Staff very unfriendly and bordering on rude. Will not be coming back here again

Rubbish meal! £16 for the size of a child’s plate! Why offer something great, if you can’t deliver?! Left feeling disappointed! Apparently, other customers had also complained about the portion sizes! We won’t be back!!!

Wow! What a terrible meal at the Sun Inn today for mothers day! The meal came out on what I would call a side plate not a lot of anything and it was called a Lamb roast! Spouts was cold roast potatoes were hard and the meat was chewy and string still attached. Horrible £17 x3 I've ever spent, will not be going back!!! As for my Child who had the cod gouaons they did not even look like one, it was a deep fried slab of uninterested stuff! My god how many years have you been cooking food for!!!

Perfection. Everything that a good pub should be. Ideal for any occasion. The clients are nice too! FOOD Delicious lunches. Very tasty. High quality food. Cooked to perfection. MENU Excellent menu. Layout of the menu has been well thought through. For people wanting to eat healthier options, the salads are listed first, which really helps with staying focused (if that's your thing). Other options which follow the salads are classics, as well as pizzas, and burgers, and plenty more. DRINKS Great choices of soft drinks, wines, well-kept beers, spirits, mixers, and teas & coffees. INSIDE Spacious with a big variety of different seating areas, for example: large conservatory, private nooks for personal conversations, TV lounge perfect for football and rugby, clean and well-managed. TOILETS Clean and well-stocked. Nice soap and hand cream. CREW The serving staff are friendly, helpful, courteous, and kind. Smiling faces, with great attitudes. a real hidden gem, dont take any notice of the poor reviews, we had a lovely stay, lovely food, friendly staff, beautifully comfortable rooms, loved the hanging flower baskets and Barry was the nicest most pleasant man who made us feel very welcome, would definitely stay there again if in the area, have paid a lot more for much inferior accomodation in my time.

A wonderful young man named Sam, was absolutely shamazing, he was so helpful,. The accommodation was at its best, clean, tidy and spacious , oh my I wanted to take the bed home. They are dog friendly, had I realised this I would of taken ours. Thank you to all the staff who truly went out of their way. Highly recommended ***** 👌 xx

Visited yesterday for a family wake. Cold buffet was excellent and Sam, who I arranged the event through, was there on hand to make sure everything went smoothly. Very pleased with the service, food and the use of the conservatory

We decided to go for the cheeseburgers and we were not disappointed I would go as far as saying it was up there with the best in Swindon. The service was excellent with Sam ensuring we were taken care of with drinks across the entirety of our visit. Great job and we will be back

I stayed here for one night. There was plenty of parking on site and I walked in to the reception area at the bar to be met by a yawning man who judging by the recent reviews I assume was the landlord. He checked me in efficiently enough but the rooms are located just behind the pub in their own wing so he just left me to lug a heavy suitcase up 2 flights of stairs and find my room. The room was ok, not particularly inspiringly decorated but it was spacious; the bed was reasonably comfy and I had a quiet nights sleep. The shower room was nice. Things definitely improved in the morning, there was a very helpful chap serving and I had a great full English breakfast which was included in the price. Overall it was ok.

This Pub changes management quite regularly. As it’s not part of a chain, each time the management changes so does the Menu so it’s a bit hit and miss how good the food is….mostly it’s good sometimes excellent. This time it’s extremely disappointing. On the menu was “pie of the day” with seasonal vegetables and mash with gravy for £16.50….bit pricey for a pie so I thought it must be a nice home pie. On asking at the bar what the “ pie of the day “ was today , I was told steak and kidney….what a result !! my favourite. Well….what a let down…what came out was a pie that had clearly came from a freezer, and certainly not home made, with very little filling…pukka pies from any supermarket would have been 10 times better….the seasonal vegetables was some undercooked cabbage with frozen peas mixed in…and some sticky unpleasant instant mash….very very disappointing for that price….Chef’s been to Iceland 😲

Written as a review for my dad who staued there ... Needed a wheelchair accesible room stumbled across this pub, phoned landlord to confirm booking and what a star find! Good beer, good food, great service, very helpful staff, nothing there not to like, highly recomended

Appalling experience. Decided to pop in on what I thought would be a quiet Bank Holiday Monday evening and what I experienced was very strange. Full of drunk, strange people with what seemed like comings and goings upstairs by a guy who I'm guessing is a local person who is living upstairs. Not the family friendly place this used to be. Seems to have gone downhill from my last visit when it seemed like a very friendly place to visit. Now it just seems to be full of drunks. Hence we won't be coming back under its current Management.

Went to this pub for a meeting with client, ordered 3 coffees a tea. I then asked for the menu and if it was possible to order a sandwich. The response to my question was not exactly what I was expecting, a man who wasn't serving me shouted this is not a cafe if you want sandwich go to the supermarket. Absolutely disgusting behaviour, I walked away from the pub and took my client elsewhere. Won't be retuning any time soon.

I am very saddened to be writing such a sad review on a place I once loved, my wife and I usually come here with our children once in a while to grab a bite to lunch- never had a problem until now! When coming into this place we are used to seeing the same smiley staff who are very welcoming and attentive however this time I did not recognise 1 single staff member and the ones who was working looked miserable and bored! Standing around chatting whilst multiple tables were dirty. My wife then went to the bar to order food and was greeted by the new landlord( who was very grubby and not well presented at all). My wife questioned where all the staff had gone and he replied with got rid of them. my wife then stated how amazing they where and how we used to see them all the time and she did mention how unhappy the staff looked on this day which he rudely replied with well if you don’t like them there is the door over there! Stunned my wife didn’t even bother ordering the food we just finished up our drinks. Whilst we was finishing these drinks I could hear the landlord swearing and getting frustrated in-front of customers which I think is very unprofessional, However I brushed this over my shoulder but then I seen a girl about 6 years old running behind the bar and into the kitchen which is very hazardous and also very unprofessional, little did I realise the little girl then came out with a different man who obviously didn’t work there and was sat the other side of the bar with whom I’m presuming is her dad having a drink? I also then seen and other young lad who didn’t look like he worked there either come from behind the bar with dirty looking work clothes on, saying “bye see you later” is it some type of free living up in the pub? Either all it didn’t seem right to me and I am very surprised Arkells have let such a rude and dirty manager look after such a lovely pub

Absolute disgrace new manager Barry well I think the brewery needs to replace him with someone that knows their job and with manners… he has no passion and swearing at customers is pushing it too far… same old regular customers at the bar shouting writhing their conversations about sex this is a family pub and I was not impressed by this. £5 for cheesy chips and they were not cooked other members of staff looked like they didn’t want to be there, such a shame for such a gold mine BRING IN NEW MANAGEMENT….

We arrived just as the music stopped which was for us a plus, however the conservatory was really cold, and the meals when they came "mind the plates they may be very hot" they were not, and the food was at best luke warm, very tasty (thank goodness we are used to coolish dinners having children who are fussy) would we come again! Amazing service. Visited here with the family and we were greeted by a lovely young lady at the front gate who knew what she was doing and made us feel welcome from the start. Food was just amazing you get what you pay for. A little bit of a frosty reception from someone who didn’t seem that happy in their job but made up for by the excellent customer service from Bridget who waited our table. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was excellent. I had a delicious steak and kidney pie with 7 different veg! It was outstanding.
