I visited this cosy coastal pub with friends based on a recommendation by a local we met at sunset on Boulmer beach! I'm pleased we followed his advice as we found the pubs pictured barmaid professionally courteous & welcoming & my Coors beer was most refreshing too!

6 adults 1 child = 4 meals 1st meal was bagers & mash x 2 mash was like rubber, onion rings were greasy and very few peas. 2nd meal Scampi and chips, we'll tastes like its out of a supermarket freezer ? 3rd meal Chicken curry was okay. 4th meal fisherman's board tasted like out of supermarket freezer but the smoked kipper pate was to die for ( fantastic). Need a chef not a cook at this establishment. It says "We don't serve fast food". In my opinion they do.

Called in at 13.25pm received a warm welcome and ordered the Sunday lunch, waited at table and time dragged on, had to enquire when we would get our meals, excuse very busy, not my problem, no previous approach to say there would be a delay. Meals eventually arrived at 14.10pm. then disappointment. Cold plate, Luke warm veg hardly cooked and cold gravy. OK only cost £35.40 but that’s not the point, service was bad and the food not great. We will not be returning.

A life long visitor to Alnmouth, now in my 60s, I have stayed at the Sun Inn for the last 15 years (often twice yearly) and LOVED it. Sadly, after many years, Hosts Bren and Mel gave up the Tenancy and the place has since changed hands twice more within the last 18 months! In September 2022 under "New Owner" No 1 there were major issues with Staffing and the Kitchen... No regular Chef, & Very Young Bar Staff (usually only one on duty) expected to run both the Bar and Kitchen. This time, 12 - 16 July 2023 with "New Owner" No 2 (and a newly appointed Manager just starting) my experience, was much the same. On arrival, I was told that, unfortunately, there would be NO Breakfasts available during my 4 night stay. (£120 per night but No Breakfast!) Two days later, I heard newly arriving Guests asking the Staff Member about times for Breakfast. She replied "Could you please pop down to the Bar after I've checked on times with Chef?" Hearing this, I immediately stopped the Staff Member asking if this meant I could now order a Breakfast for the next morning and got the same response. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THERE WERE NO BREAKFASTS! Meals were (they hoped) going to be served during quieter times, and only if there was more than one Staff member. I was told a "New Chef" was starting "Next Week" I hope this works out for them but all too late for me... Early Booking for Meals in Alnmouth's other Establishments IS ESSENTIAL! In high season they are very busy. The latest Owner of the Sun Inn has Refurbished the Bar and done some work to the Bedrooms. Room 1 (which I have stayed in several times before) remains the same, BUT now has a hideous "New" (but Broken!!) Multicoloured "Chandelier" (Totally out of keeping with the rest of the Decor of the room!) A lot of work has gone into creating a New "Room 3" in what used to be a Laundry store / Boiler room and now incorporates a large Shower Room. If the Boiler remains in this room (inside a cupboard) I'm very surprised that this has been allowed .... It is certainly NOT recommended to have a boiler in the bedroom of your own home and current building regulations prohibit it! NOTE: Room 3 (referred to in my previous Reviews of the Sun Inn) is now marked as Room 5 and is currently just a single bedroom with no "facilities" (toilet etc).

We stayed for two night’s recently as we’d been told that it was under new ownership? The bar was beautifully lit by candles on each table on the first night but sadly not on the second night. They don’t serve food at present but hope to do so soon. Small room at the end of the bar was the restaurant but now just looks like a storage/dumping area. Again, dogs are allowed in the bar and bedrooms, however some were off their lead and wandering around the bar. Some were on the seats, some had their paws on the bar tables which is a health and safety issue. Staff behind the bar were mostly polite and cheerful. Our bedroom was ok, nice and quiet… it had a very bizarre ceiling light and needed a deep clean. Bedding itself was fine BUT… no pillow protectors or mattress cover… this is basic hygiene and not difficult to resolve. 2 nights for room only and no breakfast £240.

We called in for a quick drink last week, as we had been told that they currently don't serve food. The choice of real ales was, for my taste, a little disappointing (I don't come from Cheshire to drink Robinson's!) - more local ales would be nice. The place looks like it is in need of a little TLC and could be made much cosier, but the barmaid was friendly. It will be interesting to see how the pub develops if/when they start doing food.

31st August 2022. Popped into the Sun Inn just after 6pm for a meal and refreshments ( we've visited a few times previously whilst on holiday and always found it to be a friendly and welcoming place to visit). Upon entering a young lady at the enclosed side of the inn told us she'd be with us in a minute ( presumably after her cigarette break). There were two other couples in the bar, we waited patiently however decided after 5 minutes it was a waste of time to wait in an establishment that didn't want our custom. On our way out the young lady told us she was just coming and she was having her break and was the only staff working. Big disappointment and poor customer care. Went down the road to the Red Lion which proved to be welcoming with great beers and great atmosphere.

Stayed one night. Very nice, friendly staff. Allowed to check in early as the room was ready. Nice, clean en suite room although small. Tea/coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries. Had 3 dogs with us and this was no problem. Had to park a distance away. No pubs/hotels on main street have car parks so hit and miss for parking. Looking forward to cooked breakfast following day which we enjoy when away and which was included in price but chef had walked out so only continental breakfast offered. Asked Jamie, the manager, for partial refund but were told to contact Hotels.com who we had booked through. After a week of lies and incompetence from Hotels.com we have given up! Would stay again but NEVER by booking through an agent!

Unfortunately after two of four meals we ordered were brought to us, the chef walked out and bedlam ensued. About half hour later the other two meals arrived but were inedible. Apologies were offered and customers advised that no charges would apply, but we were in fact presented with a full bill. After query, they did take off the two beers and two wines, but really we should not have been asked to pay for the meals. It was chaos and I just paid up and left. The staff were very nice but it was all a bit of a fiasco as people were bringing in fish and chips from the place opposite. An interesting night of entertainment as customers laughed in disbelief.

Called in for a pre dinner drink on our visit the Alnmouth. On entering we used the provided hand sanitiser and the bar, which was quiet, seemed quite plesant. Bar staff did take track and trace details. While we were sitting down the phone was ringing constantly for bookings and I noticed that every table had a reserved sign for later in the evening. Looking around the empty bar it was clear there was no spare floor space and no tables had been removed. There were no screens at the bar or between any of the tables which in some cases were back to back. It was clear that inexpensive lip service has been paid to Covid security and the restaurant is operating at non-distanced capacity which will maximise takings. Felt uncomfortable and was very pleased we were not eating here.

After walking the dogs on a damp, windy and bitterly cold Alnmouth beach we all needed some warmth and some lunch. We didn't take our 3 dogs, just the 3 humans. We decided by chance on The Sun Inn because we liked it's creamy yellow exterior paintwork, daft reason to choose a pub over another. We entered the bar which was very cosy with a fire at each end and well decorated and furnished. We chose the table near the fire after opening a tab at the bar and getting our drinks. All our meals were very good, two pie and chips and a cod loin with mash and broccoli. Two of us had a dessert, orange and lemon tart with fruit and ice cream, again very good. Two of us had a refillable coffee but didn't make it past the first. The staff were very pleasant and friendly (who isn't in Northumberland?), service was very good and the cost for 4 drinks, 3 main meals, 2 desserts and 2 coffees came to a shade under £76.00. We all agreed it was very good value for a good quality lunch and drinks. We can highly recommend The Sun Inn.

Both meals were delicious and filling so no room for dessert. We came back two night later and the special was Pan Fried Salmon with sauted potatoes and and courgette salad. The two of us went for dinner one evening and had chicken and a home made pie with a couple of drinks. Despite filling up with customers whilst were there, we beat the 'rush' such that the food was served quite quickly and was of a good standard and decent portion size. Not knowing wht is par for the course in this part of the country, I thought that the drinks might be a little expensive (large glass of white wine and a large lime and soda) but I wasn't sure. Anyway, the meals were pleasant enough and we left feeling satisfied with the service and food. We would return on another occasion if we visited the area again.

What a fabulous pub. We visited Lunch time and we all had something different and none were disappointed. Hats off to the chef. My Aunt had the chicken which she stated was cooked beautifully and her vegetables were perfect. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Whilst eating my husband became aware of a man standing at the end of the table who seemed very interesting in all that was going on. My husband is prone to seeing spirits and therefore we were not surprised or concerned. When the Landlady came to clear the table we asked if the pub was known to be haunted. She confirmed that some people had said they felt it was. My husband described the "very big man" and told her some of the traits that he felt he had, one specifically was enough to confirm who this lovely spirit was. A regular who had passed away some 18 months before. It turned out that there was even a little plaque on the bar to remember this gentleman. We were naturally thrilled that Paul had picked him up and described him so clearly. As you would imagine the Landlord and Landlady were very taken aback but pleased to hear that he is still around in spirit. Thank you so much for the warm welcome and lovely food.

Mains were very disappointing, frozen oven chips, and chicken & leak pie that only had leak in, we have had far better in corner cafe. Will not return.

First time visit to the area for a weekend with my Mrs and the , went in the pub after a long walk on the beach and found it to be a very homely accommodating place, I’d popped my head in the other pubs in the village and none really took my fancy as I really like a warm pub atmosphere and I found it here. It’s dog friendly as well.

We ate here several times during our week’s stay in the village. The staff are super friendly, the service efficient and the food excellent value for money. I would recommend the mussels and the ham, egg and chips. The beer was good too!

We came here for Sunday lunch and were delighted that they did a vegetarian version of the roast - with veggie sausages and all the other vegetables. It was delicious and very good value. The place itself is warm and welcoming and service was excellent too. We will definitely return here.

Two consecutive nights in the Sun Inn as it’s a great place to eat in Alnmouth, especially after a busy day walking on the wonderful beach....

We were staying in Alnmouth & had planned to have a nice meal out on the Saturday afternoon unfortunately, because THe Red Lion's restaurant was closed due to refurbishment, we were booked into The Sun Inn. When we arrived our table was pointed out to us, we were a party of 13 & they intended to squash us around 2 tables that would usually accommodate 8 - the pub was almost empty! We asked to move & this seemed to totally inconvenience the Manageress, from this point on we were left feeling most unwelcome. The food itself was very average.

On visiting Alnmouth today we popped into the Sun inn to see if they were dog friendly as we had our little terrier with us. After a astounding yes, we went for a lovely walk on the beach and after a while went back to the pub for some lunch. Wednesday was pie day so that’s what we ordered and wow how good they were. I can highly recommend the steak and ale pie, homemade and full of meat, fabulous. We had a drink, pie chips and peas, Bakewell tart and a coffee and I have to say it was gorgeous. The landlord and lady made us and the dog feel very welcome and it was the kind of place you settled in instantly, very comfortable atmosphere and just a lovely place to go.

Good atmosphere with a couple of "real ales" and a good selection of wines. The staff were friendly and chatty. (Dog friendly).

Having read a few reviews we were looking forward to a nice meal. On arrival ( there was 13 of us ) we were shown to our table and to be honest it was a squash to fit us all around in a comfortable manner so we asked to be moved to a larger table which the waitress accommodated. We gave our drinks and food order to the waitress and she repeated it back to us now this is where the problem started. The waitress read back our order and as far as we were aware it was correct but hard to tell when she reads out 2 scampi's 3 pies one with peas and chips etc as we didn't know what each other had ordered. One of our friends who works in Hospitality asked if we had ordered 13 meals so at least we knew we had all ordered a meal. The food arrived and there was a couple of mistakes but that was not the issue it was the rudeness of one of the other staff, on the lines of " well if you had listened to the order it wouldn't have been wrong " She then continued to talk about us with the other staff in the bar area. After our meal (which cost just under £300 in total including drinks) we decided to leave . The first half of the group went first in a taxi and he was then coming back for the rest of us. As we were waiting for the taxi other customers came in and were treated totally different to us so I decided to have a quiet word with the said woman privately and to be honest all she wanted was us out of her pub. I find it very strange that she would be so rude to visitors to the area in this current climate. On another note we went to The Red Lion first and had a great time made to feel really welcome and had their kitchen not been closed for refurbishment we would have stayed there

The Sun Inn is a proper pub with good Ales and pub food. We stayed overnight while doing a couple of days walking on the Northumberland coast. The room was clean and very comfortable, with entertainment suite and tea/coffee. All of the staff that we met were friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was very good.

We have not stayed in the Sun, but we do eat there a number of times when we visit Alnmouth. Not a huge menu, but the food is lovely. The staff are always friendly and helpful. Can't fault it.

Went for dinner. The lasagne was fine. I had pie and chips. The pie was small and the chips were a bit chewy but it was OK.

We were a family group of seven adults and three small children and were recommended to eat here by our B&B; landlady. Excellent choice. Well sited table, good choice of food, well cooked and large portions. Friendly service, friendly locals, excellent beer.

We went for an evening meal in this pub and were shown to a large table in the bar. It was nice and warm in here and quite a few people in. The service was very good and we did not have long to wait for our meals which were very plentiful and very well cooked. It would have been nice to have had one of the desserts on offer as they were tempting but as the portions were so large none of us could eat one. (14 pieces of scampi with chips!) Very nice staff here and reasonably priced.

Looking for somewhere to eat after a long walk, we stumbled across this pub. We went in to a warm welcome and a menu that contained typical pub grub which, thankfully, was not all "chefy".

The cafe prices are ludicrous. £3.45 for a toasted tea cake with barely any fruit in it is ridiculous as is a fiver for two cups of tea and £9 for a cooked breakfast!! The staff are not the most pleasant either. Sadly the shop and garden centre prices are way off the scale too compared to most other garden centres. Definitely would not recommend or revisit.

Called in at lunchtime for a couple of drinks. This is the second time but no more. A man, the same on both occasions standing at bar had the foulest loud mouth He was actually talking to the barman and two others Every other word began with "f' He had a dog with him This time he pulled seat out at one of the tables for his dog to sit at Absolutely disgusting. My husband mentioned to barman who grinned and apologised Not good enough

Nice little hotel bar right on the Main Street of Alnwick I had drink several times during our stay in Alnwick. Margaret had the chilli which she said was nice. I wasn’t hungry so had the potato skins which came with a barbecue sauce and garlic mayo, which were ok but out of a bottle.

Popped in for lunch on a day over to Lindisfarne. Despite advertising that they cater for gluten free, a disappointing menu. When I asked at the bar if they do anything gluten free, the barman said that anything gluten free will have GF after it on menu, but they can do any sandwich with gluten free bread. There were no meals suitable on menu, so I went back to bar and asked if their spread was dairy free. Barmaid gives a big sigh and goes to check. Comes back to say yes it is, what do you want- like it was a big inconvenience for her. It’s not my husbands fault that he has allergies. Such attitude makes me wonder how anyone goes back here. Sarnie was ok but they didnt seem to do it separate to normal food as hubby found a bit of grated cheese attached to his bread. If he hadn’t spotted it, he would have been I’ll. overpriced too as the bread was just normal sliced bread. WONT BE GOING BACK!
