UPDATE - the response you see below is clearly to try and save face as this is in the public domain. 6 months has passed and despite multiple calls and emails to the email address Doug details below. We have not received our refund. Doug is a scammer. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL. Me and my family had a stay booked in May but unfortunately had to cancel because the restaurant was due to be closed due to a change in owner days before our trip. We were promised a refund, several emails and phone calls to the owner, Doug, who each time sweet talked me and told me he was going to transfer the money. It has been 2 months now and I still have not received my money back. It is clear I have been done over and fobbed off so unfortunately we are now having to pursue a case with the small claims court. We were planning on visiting later this year but definitely won't be now, customers lost. By the looks of things we aren't the only ones who have had this type of treatment!

Just returned home stayed in room 12 firstly the manager never got his name was very helpful seemed to be running the place himself! This hotel needs a full refurbishment room's very tired and the outside looks rundown whoever owns this place needs to get there finger out and return this property to it's former glory could be a goldmine and give the chap managing it a good pay rise because you the owner are letting him down!

What a little gem. Stayed over for a friends wedding. The interior entrance is a little shabby, and looks like its not decided if its a pub or a hotel.we were welcomed by the man Rob. Who showed us to our rooms, very helpful. We came down to the bar to find Rob was now the bartender 🤣 breakfast the next morning was lovely full english with tea and coffee and juice. The Cook being... Rob again. 😂And the waiter was also Rob... Its a nice no frills hotel, needs a bit of a facelift. But the staff (Rob) cant do enough for ya. 🤣 Clean towels in the room. An over filled hot drink tray assortment. Netflix And Northern soul over the pa system at breakfast. Free parking What more could you ask for.

I don't know how you booked it 🙂 It's far from everything and there's only a station around you and there are no restaurants and not even a park to walk in. This is different from the hotel's interior, it's old every time and everything is dusty and worn out and there's no elevator and the bathroom is very dark. We slept in it for one night and went out and of course their reception is a bar. The bar was the one that welcomed us and it is definitely impossible to repeat the experience

Do not stay in the Family room 12 horror see photos! Started by me just wanting my key as i had my 2 grandsons with me that was tired, but only one member staff and she was busy at tge bar. Couldnt get in the room as the lock was faulty so had to return to the bar. The WORSE part was the bathroom (see photos) Grimey, moldy, stuff in the shower, black mildew around the windows and even the top bunk bed by a window that had black mold around it. No wardrobe inly set of shelves that had sticky cup marks on 3 of the shelves, bedside table sticky cup marks, water stains all above the door, kettle had a food mark on it, no teaspoons anyway to make a coffee and it was toi late to leave the boys for me to go to the bar (which is reveption too) i phoned x 3 times no answer, no welcome pack with a contact number, can not have a shower this morning shower disgusting! Also the pub noise was loud outside until midnight so why put a family room right next to pub area? Such a shame i was looking forward to this break cant wait to leave here, will go for breakfast elswhere then get home to shower :(

Its location is maybe half an hour's walk from the center. I spent one night there, but... it is bad in terms of cleanliness. I booked a family room and could not sleep in it. We asked to change the room and there were rooms for two people available, but they said there was no waffle, even though it was available on the device in front of us and on Booking.. It was late, so I did not discuss it. .. But it is only a night and it will not happen again. We come early in the morning... we would never advise it

We stayed here the weekend the 9th August 2024. Please be warned, photos look nothing like the current state of the venue. Firstly, the location is not the best, a very long, busy road and a hell of a walk to get into any town/village. Secondly, there was one young lady on the bar/check in, there was no warm welcome received, no explanation of our stay, no directions or support with things such as keys or how the doors open (was a challenge) she did not explain when the building locked, as we were planning on going out for drinks and food, to which we would have been locked out, if it wasn’t for us discovering a back entrance way. (we had to figure out for ourselves that you can actually access our room via a back fire door). Leading on to the bedroom, our room was on the bottom floor, practically behind the bar haha, it is very very run down, dirt and liquid splattered all over the walls, mold in the bathroom, no small shower gels etc, no mini fridge, very poor condition. To then make matters worse, whoever was staying directly above us, decided to pull an all nighter, banging around, music and laughing, getting showers at 4am…the list goes on. Safe to say, me nor my boyfriend slept a wink. To make it even worse, we had no idea if there were any staff on site to report this to, as I previously mentioned, the check in was brief and informative. Genuinely disappoint and disheartened as this was a surprise for my boyfriends birthday - safe to say I was gutted. Tried to report this in the morning as we left, however, again, no staff around, just a chef who took the key from me. I was going to send a formal email/letter, but from the look of these reviews…. No one gets a reply or compensation

Had lunch. Very pricey food, kids meals at £8.95 wernt good, battered fish and battered chicken like slime inside. £16 for a lasagne in what id describe as a fancy breakfast bowl. Loads of menu and drinks unavailable. Only stayed and ate as kids were very hungry from travelling and it was convenient. Music played during visit inappropriate for the price of food, sisqo thong song with a £80 food bill in a old fashion restaurant room. We were the only dinners in the place, which should have been a warning, and the waitress didn't even check if the food was OK as is customary. On advising them of dissatisfaction, was given a nod and walked away.

This is a bit of a mixed review to write as the new owners have only just taken over (6 weeks ago) and are in the process of improving the property. Our room was very nice, had been recently redecorated and the bathroom was also new and very clean (although the extractor fan was not working and there was no window) The downside of the property is the main road location. It was warm when we stayed, so we needed the window open, but due to all the traffic noise it was difficult to relax in the room or sleep because of this. Perhaps a fan in the room would have been beneficial or in the future air con so that the road noise is not an issue. As a fellow business owner I appreciate how hard it is to get a business on track and particularly such a large venue, but I do think that uniforms for the staff would not go amiss (so you know they work there and are not guests) and perhaps some colourful hanging baskets outside to make it look inviting, it looks closed!. Our room was not serviced whilst we stayed and perhaps the staff not walking around in PJs in the morning could be looked into. When we actually went to leave and deposit our key at 10.30, there was no one to be found. The venue is only a 1 mile walk or drive from Windermere, so is in a great location and I just think if the small things can be addressed initially it would make all the difference. There is a lovely outdoor area but it desperately needs weeding and there is litter everywhere. I fully appreciate it is being upgraded but I it is very evident from our stay that things, from a guest point of view, are not there yet. The girls working (when we could find them) were very pleasent.

Nice old pub, in need of some TLC, with welcoming and shady beer garden on busy Stagecoach 555 Central Lakes bus route, so it would be very handy for a 'pub crawl', providing you are a Lottery winner! Completely unrealistic prices, as is unfortunately the case with so many pubs these days. (HALF pint of indifferent lager £3-20 and a very average bitter in excess of £5-00 per pint). If the owners don't want to be included in the dismal list of over 80 UK pubs closing permanently each month, they should seriously consider: 1). Squeezing or changing their beer supplier. 2). Reducing prices to an affordable and fair level. 3). Establishing a 'Happy Hour'. 4). Promoting and encouraging use of the attractive Beer Garden. A much wider and more interesting choice of beers and lagers can be enjoyed at less than half these extortionate prices in Wetherspoon's pubs. There is one in nearby, historic Kendal and another award-winning example in scenic Keswick.

Don’t make the same mistake I did! I booked a stay at the Sun Inn in Windermere 5 weeks in advance for a long weekend. To my disappointment, they canceled the booking just 2 days before we were meant to arrive, causing a lot of stress and inconvenience. Such short notice is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. In hindsight, I’m glad we didn’t stay there. We managed to get a room at the temperance inn in Ambleside, which was such a pleasant stay. When we drove by, the entire party agreed that the place looked quite shabby and poorly maintained. This last-minute cancellation saved us from what likely would have been a disappointing stay.

AVOID UNLESS YOU ARE LOOKING TO RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY!! Communication is ZERO!! booked in March for July stay via Agoda. Got confirmation email from Agoda. Tried email host some questions multiple times, never got a reply. Check via Agoda in May about the host as I didn’t get any email reply. Only to find out from AGODA that host has to cancel my booking, reason given is they are fully booked! Host didn’t inform me about this, Agoda didn’t inform me about this! If I didn’t initiate Agoda to check for me, I would turn up at the hotel according to my booking date and to find that I don’t have a room for my family! Job well done there THE SUN INN as you have ruined others holiday as you have always been! (Read some reviews of similar situation being turned away without prior notice). Very unprofessional!!

DO NOT GO HERE. Absolutely disgusting service and liars. We booked a weekend away for 5 ladies, two of which are pregnant. We have confirmation that we would be staying here. We got to the hotel (dirty and not tidy in the slightest with the most disgusting staff with awful attitude). They said they did not have our booking which is a lie as we had confirmation and an email confirming this FROM THEM (the owner deleted the confirmation email claiming he did not receive it, which is also a lie as we have evidence that it delivered). The other lady had an awful attitude and attended to a different family instead of apologising and sorting a room out. They had rooms available as it was shown on the website yet they said there weren’t any? They did not sort anything out. I’ve never met people so unorganised with disgusting and nasty attitudes. I would never stay here and I recommend that no one ever goes here. Sort yourselves out.

This hotel 'could' be wonderful with a good boost of funds. Externally its faded magnificence lets its curb appeal down big time with the pavement in disrepair, peeling paintwork, and overgrown planting. On entry, it's reminiscent of a Scottish hostelry with wooden cladding and tartan carpeting (which could do with a good hoover)! We were warmly greeted by our female host who was genuinely a lovely lady with a bright smile and Pepe who greeted our Sadie Sue. We were shown to our room which was a reasonable size with an en suite you can move around in! A large flat-screen tv with a working remote, kettle with tea, coffee, UHT milk, and sugar. Big bath towels wrapped around all of you and not just your lower half. Hairdryer in the drawer. All lights worked, radiators worked, and hot water was in the larger shower cubicle (quite a lot of mildew on tiles and ceiling despite the extractor fan). The bed was COMFORTABLE thank you, I've left other hotels after one night due to poor mattresses so this was a real treat. The breakfast selection was very good, cereals, juices, toast with jam or honey, yogurts and fruit, AND a full English with fried or scrambled eggs. Even Sadie Sue had a sausage on a silver platter. We had one evening meal a burger and chips and a lasagne. The burger was great but I was disappointed with the lasagne as it was missing the bechamel sauce between layers and a yellow cheese topped it rather than mozzarella which would've crisped up under a grill. The garlic bread was not cooked on both sides and topped with the same yellow cheese not mentioned on the menu and the side salad was just a handful of bistro leaves! It was edible but so aesthetically displeasing. On the whole, we enjoyed our stay and admired the great task in hand that our host couple had, it's a big place with a lot of day-to-day running and large maintenance tasks to handle and no chef or other staff! Thank you for all your effort and for welcoming us so warmly.

Visited before, but this time with my wife for her birthday, with 4 friends who hadn't been to the Sun at Northaw previously. Lovely garden with lots of rustic tables..had 2 rounds of drinks first, then inside, in the rooms behind the main area of the Sun, we had 5 delicious starters, then 6 well presented and beautifully cooked meals, followed by 2 sweets and coffee. Meals served with 2 bottles of wine..total bill with a tip was £260.

Haven't been here for a few years but decided to try it again and was very pleased. It's quite expensive but has a rather unique style which is appealing. Certainly be returning. I hope that this experience will be repeated.

Visited last night with friends to celebrate a birthday. Very nice welcome (guessing it was the Landlady) drinks reasonably priced for the area, food not that cheap but everyone enjoyed what they ordered.

I've had two back to back poor experiences. First time, the bathrooms were filthy. Steak was rubbery and over cooked. Second time we went for brunch. After waiting over one hour for our brunch, pork belly was again overlooked and that a long blond hair on it. We couldn't find a server to even complain. The pub was packed. Which I don't understand at all. There are far better places nearby. The location is amazing. The pub needs new management. And a good scrub!

Stumbled across The Sun on the way home, taking a country route rather than the M25. And very glad we did too. A relaxed 'lived in' decor and an extensive menu offered even at 2.30 on a Saturday afternoon. Chose the larger version of the Norfolk Chicken, chorizo, avocado & aioli salad. We were served the most amazing freshly cooked rosemary focaccia whilst waiting. The salad was as good as any salad gets and was clearly prepared just before serving. We are not local but will most certainly make sure we come again.

Three generations of our family met at The Sun for lunch on Bank Holiday Monday, (They normally don't open on Mondays.) Lots of other people had the same idea and it was pleasantly busy. The food was very good. Fish & chips were enjoyed greatly. The children's menu was good too. Portions are big so we had no room for desserts. The warmed bread which arrived whilst we were waiting deserves a mention - delicious! It could do with a lick of paint in places so think shabby chic but that didn't detract from our enjoyment.

We visited on a Saturday night, the restaurant was fairly busy although not full. There was nothing that really jumped out on the menu and I would prefer to see some plainer dishes. The prawn cocktail I had was very nice although it did not come with any bread and the skate as a main course was nice but the croutons it came with were greasy and not all that pleasant. The restaurant is quite quirky with mismatched furniture, which is quite attractive but the toilets could do with refurbishing. Not sure I will rush back.

My daughter booked The Sun after reading good reviews. We parked in the dedicated car park and went into a comfortable room with nice space between the tables. there were 4 adults and one toddler. the high chair was soon in place. Very friendly staff. There is a nice selection of classic dishes available, some with a twist. We all had a starter and they were all complimented. When the mains arrived they were very big portions. My chicken roast was delicious. Roasties were OK (not the best) the veg were very nice. my daughter had a huge veal chop which defeated her. The 'special' of Venison pie was given high praise. My wife had fish and chips . She would have preferred the chips a little more well done but said the fish was delicious. The portions were huge but very high quality.as well.My grand daughter had the kids burger and chips. She enjoyed the chips and bun but the burger was a bit dense. Maybe we should have chosen something else for her.Overall I would say this is a high quality gastro pub. Good service to match the quality of food. Prices are reasonable for the quality.Very enjoyable.

Charming pub in Northaw village, overlooking the church. The waitress was lovely to talk to and made our evening a very pleasant experience. The food was stunning. I had the pork belly and my partner chose the haddock from a very interesting menu. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and very flavoursome. It's one of those places that you feel you'd like to visit again just so you can try the other dishes. It all sounded so delicious. The decor was quirky but relaxing and the price was reasonable. Will return soon to sample more delights.

We had a very enjoyable lunch on bank holiday Monday. I had the squid and lamb shoulder which were both extremly tasty, my aunt had whitebait and belly of pork and my father soup and gammon. They both enjoyed their meals very much. The wine list, although not extensive has a nice range of whites by the glass or bottle. The staff were attentive but not intrusive, totally at odds with some other reviews. All in all very good indeed.

Wow what a great place first visit and will definitely be back. Great food and plenty of it, great choice of wine, atmosphere relaxing and amazing staff couldn't do enough for us. Also had very good knowledge of food and drink offered by them. All in all a real winner can't wait to return with our friends and family.

We've been going to this pub for at least five years now. I've never reviewed it before, but having seen some of the negative comments that have recently been posted, I felt I had to set the record straight. We often come to the Sun for lunch after a walk in the surrounding countryside and so between Xmas and New Year we booked a table. However, we then spotted a few negative reviews on Tripadvisor and wondered if something bad had happened - a change of ownership, perhaps - in the two months since we had last visited. In the end we decided to come to the Sun - five years' of history has got to count for something, after all.So, we went again, but perhaps with a more critical eye than normal, and - surprise, suprise - it was as good as ever. The food is tasty and well-executed and presented. I personally think you're better off ordering their more adventurous meals - smoked haddock and colcannon or sea bass, crushed new potatoes and capers - than the burger or fish and chips. Although having said that they do a pretty good burger and fish and chips. As for their Sunday roasts - they are without doubt the best I have had in a pub. They do give you far too much food, but it is REALLY good nonetheless. Roasts are in general very poor in this country - and many chefs seem to find it very difficult to make nice roast potatoes. The roast potatoes at the Sun are amazing. Crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. What more can you ask for?To answer a few specific gripes in previous reviews:'Wine list is non-existent.' - I think the reviewer is exaggerating. They have about six red wines and six whites available. Maybe not the greatest selection, but the quality is good.'Toilets are dirty' - Well, yes, a bit. But these are pub toilets and they are far from the worst pub toilets I've ever seen.'Service was slow' - It's a pub - not a restaurant. If you want restaurant service, go to a proper restaurant. We found the service relaxed, but certainly not slow.'waitress was a little vague when it came to questions on the menu' - We asked her about raisins in the sticky toffee pudding. She immediately went to ask the chef and returned within a minute to answer our question.'Staff are miserable' - They've never been miserable when we've been there - we've always had a friendly welcome. In summary, I think people who come here expecting a posh gastropub are going away disappointed. If you think of it more as a pub that serves damn good food, you will probably feel more satisfied.

I have tried the sun many times when it first opened it was fabulous staff were friendly upbeat soon as we came through the door usual bottle of red always left feeling happy food excellent gradually atmosphere changed most annoying menus are where the meal comes out without potatoes and veg because they are charged extra just charge for the complete meal always short of staff food took ridiculous amount of time food good quality cooked well but cold the toilets are awful and freezing I always asked to sit in the pub added on areas are miserable job to get staffs attention someone with vision could make this into a brilliant busy pub in such an affluent area even well off customers hate feeling ripped off

Having visited this gastro pub a couple of times over the years I have to say I will not be going back. The food overall was OK but very large portions, the wine list was non-existent which should not be the case when it is so easy to buy good wines!! The waitress was pleasant albeit a little vague when it came to questions on the menu. The coffee was a disaster and the the Irish coffee as complete laugh, arrived with the comment from the waitress 'the barman cannot make Irish Coffees so he has suggested a DIY' and placed a cup of coffee, glass of whisky and jug of cream - astonishing behaviour. My advice would be to go somewhere else.

Haven't been for a while, and not in the winter. Visiting very early evening on Friday. Welcoming fire which our retriever enjoyed, we enjoyed the wine and beers while waiting for our starters. Lovely starters, especially the duck salad. Another beer and our mains arrived, Norfolk chicken, very nice indeed. The chef was kind enough to bag up our unfinished meal, very filling. Another beer to end the evening. Thank you.

Had family birthday here, this week. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, bit slow on coming to serve us but fine. We all chose different things - steak, veal, chicken. Shame you have to pay extra £3 for sides - like chips - which should probably be part of the meal anyway. I had chicken, with pigs in blankets - really wanted roast potatoes - which were available with the veal - but it wasn't possible. Had to have chips, mash or new potatoes. Why?Food was really good - good portions and tasty. Chicken was very moist - no idea how they cook that in half an hour. I had taken a Birthday cake - plates were supplied and we didn't have to pay extra for bringing that in.I would recommend it - just very relaxed and good quality food.

I can honestly say that I have not had such a dreadful meal in a long time, which i'm obviously very grateful for !! Anyone who has read other reviews of mine will probably realise that on the whole I only tend to write reviews when I have something good to say, as all too often people are quick to criticize so when I do have something negative to say I implore people to listen. The ambiance of this place is zero the service could be something out of a comedy sketch, I don't want to get personal but............... it was somewhat off putting, even if very pleasant and cheerful. As for the food it was really pretty inedible in fact my husband and I practically had as much on plates when it was removed as when it was brought to the table. Also it wasn't that cheap either for what you got.The wine selection was poor and not that cheap and real headache making stuff.I've tried to think of something pleasant to say by way of a sweetener but I truly can't think of anything other than the guys were pleasant.

Tall and light brown skin barista lady was so rude and service hella slow. Don’t bother. What a joke. She was super slow and hasn’t got a clue how to operate or run the place although she looked like someone senior. Hire someone who can actually manage

Went in for lunch with a friend…delicious is all I can say! I had the shepherds pie with slow roasted lamb. Excellent! One comment…my friend had the pasta with aubergine but unfortunately it only had one slice of aubergine…….other than that it was a tasty dish.

Nero’s Mocha drink with Belgium chocolate is best , I’m enjoyed it in such cold weather and decorations that Nero has has put a nice cabin feel to this winter time. 🎄🤶 It’s always nice and warm and friendly , pleasant to see customers who enjoy their social time here.
