Visited the Cock of the North for the last 2 Sundays and loved it both times. A lovely welcome by the gentleman hosting, the food was absolutely delicious and amazing service by Holly. Thank you very much and will certainly be back soon ( probably next week).

More of a restaurant than a pub. Food menu looks good.

Lovely pub but let down a little went for Sunday lunch at 3 most of the meats was sold out and a menu change was a disappointment the chicken is now half the size of what it used to be pointed this out to the server to be told this is a better cut of chicken you basically get half of a single breast lucky for me the pudding was the saving grace would definitely not recommend for a hearty meal shame because the last time I went there is was 5 star

This is not a bad review, just some feedback for improvement as it is quite a nice place. Pros: nice warm fire crackling provided a lovely atmosphere. Staff were terrific, great with children. Spacious and clean. Sunday roast was great. Cons: we ordered a cheesecake sphere which in the menu was described as a caramel cheesecake with a biscuit base inside a chocolate sphere with caramel for pouring. What arrived was a chocolate ball with a teaspoon of mascarpone inside (not a cheese cake in anyway). A tiny dusting of digestives on the side. We even had to ask the wait staff if this was how it was supposed to look like. it was nearly £9 for a bit of chocolate and cream. At the end of an otherwise perfectly pleasant meal, it kind of ruined the experience. I might suggest taking that off the menu or actually serving a regular cheesecake.

We were seated straight away. Unfortunately that was the end of the good service we received. We waited for 30 minutes and no one had come to even take a drinks order even though it was not just at all. I ended up going to the bar to be served. Food was below average and took a long time to finally arrive. I had asked for just chips I got 8 of them in a bowl. I would not recommend this pub for food!

Nice roast dinners, fairly wide menu. Fairly expensive.

What a lovely place. The fish and chips we had were amazing. Plenty of parking and an airy, modern, spacious interior. Polite, efficient staff and great service. Thank you.

Had a post-birthday lunch with a friend which we both enjoyed. Included was a free birthday bottle of wine (£29) and we both had one glass. Just as we drove out, we remembered that we didn't take the half bottle of leftover wine and so went back to ask for the bottle only to be told it had been "dumped." It's unbelievable that instead of asking if we wanted the leftover half bottle, it was immediately dumped. Had it been well after we'd left, I'd have understood but the fact that we were still at the pub when the wine was dumped is unacceptable but most of all wasteful and thoughtless. Incomprehensible! So disappointed as the lady who served us was very friendly, however, she wasn't the one to give us our bill or clear the table. A disappointing end to what was a good start. Pauline Ashley-Spike

2 course meal and a drink £25 to £30. Great atmosphere, friend and helpful staff.

What a most frustrating venue. One good meal and one almost inedible. After complaining was given a free desert which was also disgusting. The chef seems to think that deconstructed deserts are the way forward. Unfortunately they are not good and they need to go back to basics.

Really disappointed that the three IPAs on the menu weren't available last Sunday. The waitress had to get someone senior who explained the ale availability policy, then told me about the guest ale. The lamb Sunday roast wasn't great; slow-cooked shoulder isn't really a Sunday roast, it was all small pieces of meat when I would have expected slices. The chocolate salted caramel slice was good.

Full disclosure, I was being treated by a friend so didn't pay a dime, but my friend was a paying customer who wanted to take me somewhere nice. And this is that, pleasant county pub look, easy to get to with ample parking, good range of food on the menu and pretty rapid service. Had a Sunday roast with a dessert, both very good. I'm going back there any time I'm passing.

We went as a family for a lovely roast to celebrate our anniversary but not the best experience this time I'm afraid. The service time waiting for our drinks was over 20 minutes, our food came out earlier than our drinks (although ordered afterwards), the standard of our meals was awful - swimming in watery gravy and rock hard potato's that you couldn't even cut. Staff were pleasant enough but service pretty appalling which is a shame... it'll be a while before we return again.

The food was great. We had one of the Sunday Roasts options. Good desserts, too. The pub/restaurant looks nice and there's an inviting beer garden. The drawback was the Service. It was too slow - and the place wasn't that busy.

I was here with family members for a Sunday Roast. The meals, desserts, and coffees were great. The building was nice and there was an inviting beer garden. The problem was very slow service - and they weren't even that busy.

Two out of three guests ordered buttermilk chicken burger.Both were so burnt that it was impossible to cut with a knife.They didnt take whole meal away but cooked more chcken.Five small nuggets were brought back to us.So we had to then try and re assemble a burger, and cut one nugget in half. For the price of the meal it shouldn't be up to the guest to reassemble the meal. Not impressed.Also both guests not feeling great afterwards.

The pub was quiet.. sadly the food was not good . 2 out of 3 of us had the buttermilk chicken burger. When it came we both had to call staff over as the food tasted overwhelmingly burnt. We were advised that they would get us replacement chicken thighs . Meanwhile the rest of meal went cold . Replacement chicken arrived ( in my mind too quickly) and the first bit I cut into I was unsure if it was cooked or not . Both myself and my friend have had upset stomachs. We were not offered any compensation. Even when we mentioned again when the bill came that the food was poor . Will not be returning

Oh wow! It's been a while since I've been here. Went back today with some trepidation, but I needn't have worried. It was really first class. Great food, brilliant service. Will definitely return.

Lunch was great with a good menu choice and nice selection of beers - the team were very pleasant but I feel needed another pair of hands to cope with the number of customers. Plenty of parking, lots of space inside too though nicely broken up.

The staff on the hottest day of the year were absolutely charming, superbly efficient and a pleasure to deal with. The dinners and desserts were delicious, I couldn't recommend it highly enough. My dog was also allowed in the garden, which makes it a great destination for tjrvwhole family It was my 1st visit, but it won't be my last...

Was very quiet when we went, early in the week, but lots of tables, so good for a group outing. Didn't see a childrens play area, but lots of space for young ones to run around. Close to a busy road so would need to be mindful if with very young children. Staff were very friendly. Recommend the sharing plates, very yummy.

For some reason when we do our quiz on a Monday night we have to have background music playing. Very distracting. Only started this week. (Maybe last week we were on holiday) Atmosphere was not the same this week. Very few people. Very unusual. Shame. Been going here for years.

Went there Today, after sitting down at the table, I had to go and find someone to take our order, as other people we're coming in and Being served first. Roast chicken was nice but there was hardly any Gravey on the plate. Came out in a Gravey Boat, but looked like Dish water. Staff were Pretty off, just ignoring you when you wanted something. This was a Great Pub.

Really enjoyed Sunday lunch. Excellent medium rare beef. Charlie and Chim looked after us very well. Bravo

Sunday Roast was lovely. Chicken very tender, carrots sweet and tasty, roast potatoes were crispy and very nice yorkshire pudding.

Father's day so no table left we used garden for couple drinks. Missing good opportunity to double their takings bbq in back few more staff!

Just popped in for a quick drink but was left hugely surprised at this great pub. Lovely welcoming atmosphere, great staff, stylish but comfy interior. Rarely surprised by a pub, but this place was great.

Went for a quiet drink around 5pm, Unfortunately they decided to have a staff meeting in the bar.... there was a blonde mouth.., staff member talking so loud it was impossible to enjoy our drink. Plus listening to videos on her phone at high volume. Shame, nice pub.

Clean, spacious and welcoming...it's not perfect, looks a bit shabby, the food was nice, but the prices felt a bit high compared to other similar pubs nearby and the range of real ales is limited...very limited. But the staff were absolutely lovely, attentive and helpful. They got our dog a clean water bowl and went out of their way to ensure we all had everything we needed to enjoy our lunch, which we did. 👍😀 Thanks to everyone that looked after us.

Such a disappointment, no 0% Guinness, no Rivertown items at all, even though they are advertised on their beer menu, and no crispy broccoli and cauliflower! The staff didn’t seem to want to be there, and we were not told that our starter wasn’t available, until 15 minutes after ordering! All in all not an enjoyable experience and won’t visit again!

Went for a meal with friend. Restaurant and pub looks nice and food was OK. Only problem was our waitress was very inept. She had no interest in her job and was really half hearted when requesting our order. She said that she was relatively new but even taking that into account, which I have, she was still lacking basic training in how to seem remotely interested.

Used to love this place. Went at the weekend, starters were great albeit took a while to come out, not that big a deal. Where do I even start with the mains. After waiting 1/1.5 hours they finally started to arrive. Cold, dry, terrible food. Inedible. Staff were not apologetic one bit, the burger my brother got looked WORSE than one from a Whetherspoons. No apology at all for the delay, terrible food and I’ll be honest fairly rude staff. After being a customer here for years, I’m struggling to see myself ever returning. Really sad, but there’s not really an excuse for the experience I had. Also, asked for some colouring for my kids, they said yes but just disappeared. Had to find it myself in the end! Pub itself is lovely though, if they sorted the food situation and staff then it would be 5 stars, just as my review was before I updated it.

Food was great, decent size portions, as was the service, just a bit tricky to navigate my way around as I'm visually impaired and the lights aren't bright, which may suit others for atmosphere but not me for navigation as its a little narrow in places bit other than that a great place to dine out

Family meal, good menu choices. well cooked and competivly priced.

We visited woth our extended family, the service was attentive and the team were helpful. The food was lovely and the menu had a nice selection for all. We did book, it was a bust Sunday footfall with the added benefits of allowing dogs.

The food is accidentally cooked the staff are friendly and polite and helpful and there is plenty of room to sit and enjoy your food highly recommend it

I visited this pub with my daughter as I have on many occasions in the past. Although my daughter stuck to the choice which she had chosen in the past and enjoyed. I chose the lamb shoulder which was a total disappointment and didn’t meet the description on the menu. It was described as lamb shoulder with mashed potato and various vegetables but the lamb was just shreds of meat in a gravy with tiny unidentifiable diced pieces of vegetable and a portion of mashed potato. It was very poor value at £18 and I wished I had bought a Marks and Spencer ready meal and stuck it in my microwave. Not to be recommended as it didn’t even meet the description of a stew or casserole.

Lovely pub food, Sunday roast were really good, comfortable seats, friendly staff, even we sat there over few hours. No one mentioned that we have to leave. Enjoyed this pub again and again!

Myself and five friends went to the pub last night for dinner and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. First of all there was NO ale/beer - they had run out and was waiting for a delivery - a pub with no beer! Also three of the main courses that we chose they had run out of and to cap it, being pancake day they had run out of pancakes! It is not rocket science to make pancakes. I often go to McMullens pubs and sometimes there is the odd item that is not available, but this caps it all.

Last night I went with five friends who I have known for 60+ years for a special reunion dinner. On the plus side the staff were very friendly and efficient. The car park is large and well laid out. Then the problems started. There was no bitter. We had to make do with peroni or something similar but not ale. They had no wagyu burgers or cod loin which disappointed three of our party. Most wanted the special desert as it was pancake day but they had run out of pancakes too! An evening we were all looking forward to was let down. If or when we go again I will certainly check what items of food and drinks they have available before booking.

We had a delightful and delicious family lunch for 14 members of our family on Saturday 30th December. The service and food were so good. Four of us need gluten free options and there is a separate non gluten menu giving an excellent choice of dishes. With ages ranging from grandparents, parents and seven grandchildren everybody enjoyed the atmosphere and excellent menu. Thank you to the very attentive and pleasant waiter and the chefs from all of us.

Nice Christmas dinner here with family (from Christmas menu). Totally appreciate that a table of 12 is quite a few to organise, however, items were missed from plates and portions were not as generous as previous years when we've been. Also, compared to regular menu items which we were watching come from the kitchen, there seemed to be less care being given for what was coming out from the Christmas menu. Despite this, we did enjoy our meals and the atmosphere is always cosy here. Would always recommend but possibly not for a large group meal.

I can't believe that this place even exists near Hatfield! It's super wow!

Very nice pre Xmas lunch. Busy but not overcrowded. Food and beer were nice. After dinner coffee was rather small though.

Fantastic service, we come here every year for our Xmas lunch and it’s such a warm and friendly atmosphere, the food is always outstanding and we will always keep coming every year… Laura our lady serving us was fabulous and very attentive, we felt very pampered! It was good to see my friends in this place we really enjoyed

We've visited the restaurant several times in the past but this time were very disappointed. We had met as a celebratory meal, all coming out of our way to this centrally placed location. We had a late lunch and it wasn't particularly busy, (although one table had a large party present). Our table (for 6 persons) was tucked away, and whilst staff were perfectly polite, service was slow to the point where we wondered if we'd been forgotten a couple of times. Portions were on the small side (particularly the sharing platters), and the vegan option I chose (burger) was dry with a pretty small serving of fries. In fact, they weren't the fries I'd requested - they were brought with another guests meal, so we were able to swap. Unfortunately the food and slow service put a bit of a damper on the occasion. In the past I'd have recommended people to go here but based on this experience, I'm a little reluctant to do so.

Walked in on a Sunday just for drinks, it was busy and I understand I haven’t booked however the gent seating people was just rude. I asked for a table for drinks only and he just said no…. Zero empathy for the situation, I’ll not return now

We stopped off for some lunch and had some really good food. I just had some chicken skins, which were really good crispy and salty and some icecream, which was also decent. They have some nice whiskeys as well, I had the bulliet bourbon, which really hit the spot.

Our waiter Sid, was extremely professional. We enjoyed his service for our meal, very much. Food well presented and enjoyable.

Poor quality Fish n Chips, im sure it was Basa fillet not Cod or Haddock, and the mushy peas were garden peas mashed badly and cold. Also, a separate portion of chips came covered in salt out of the kitchen. Not good !

Very put off because there was a dog in there. I don't like dogs about when I'm eating. Other than that, it was very nice. Often go for a meal there but I will start going somewhere else if dogs are allowed in

We were very disappointed with our visit for dinner. We had the rigatoni and the wagyu burger with a starter of calamari. The wagyu burger was dry and plain and the triple cooked chips were terrible, the burger bun was not fresh. The rigatoni had no sauce and the added prawns were completely plain and bland as was the overall dish. The calamari was very dry and tasteless. The sauce bottles we were given were almost empty and the overall look of the terrace was dirty. We were very disappointed with the whole meal and having eaten here before were very surprised as in the past we have had a good experience. When we pointed the food out to the manager she refunded the awful burger and gave us a free drink which was a good gesture but seemingly one that she was expecting.

Took my Mum and my family here on a Sunday, great surroundings, excellent and quick service and the food was incredible. The portion sizes are huge, we chose the small fish and chips off the main menu and all I can say us they must bring the large out in a wheelbarrow, The prawn salad was also excellent. The kids incredibly still had room for dessert and they also looked great. Highly recommended.

Had a lovely lunch for a family gathering of six on a sunny afternoon we sat outside on patio area the service was faultless looked after perfectly by Millie all the food was delicious and the chips are out there in a league of there own would highly recommend will be returning

Great food and service over lunch

Had a very pleasant meal with friends on Friday evening. Staff were very friendly, and food arrived in good time. Quality was excellent and after 3 courses we all felt sufficiently satisfied despite some of our first choices not being available (Salmon starter and Lasagne). Prices are reasonable compared with some in the area, but menu could do with a few traditional additions offering a slightly wider choice. All in all it gets a 5 star rating from me based on the food and excellent staff.

Lovely place whether you want just a drink or a meal. Staff are all very friendly.

why go to the awful steak restaurant next door when this pub is cheaper, better and quieter despite busy times. food is delicious, severs are lovely and the place is really impressive

Went with a friend. Have been there a couple of times before. The staff were lovely and food was good. I had fish and chips, and my friend had Lasagne Very quiet inside. Would recommend it to anyone.

Great little place for a drink and the lovely garden. The food is touch and go each time I've eaten here, and I suppose it depends on the chef at the time.

I had cod loin which was delicious. Some other people in the group were less satisfied with their meals but I had no complaints.

Everyone enjoyed the food, the staff were polite, but the service wasn't perfect. Desserts brought out before main meal plates were cleared, coffee never arrived despite reminding the server. We figured the cost of the missing coffee would cover the tip

I think the management of this pub was changed because we use to go a lot and last week when we visited with our friends to celebrate birthday food menus changed and they weren’t good taste like before , stuff was rude and service was very unprofessional. Manager doesn’t care about the customers…So everyone notice that there was a big change for everything.. Unfortunately we won’t go again ! Feel sad because it was our favourite pub before 🙁

A week ago I was there on Saturday at 2pm with my friends, I was disappointed that there was not steak available on their menu and coffee arrived cold and they can not take criticism well.

Beautiful pub, friendly staff can’t wait for the garden in the summer time!
