The Sun at Flockton in Kirklees

The Sun Inn was our lunch venue on a day when two parts of the family met up at the 'mid-point' between Glossop and Harrogate (sort of). Our plans to visit Howarth had been aborted at the last minute when the lunch venue rang to advise us they had had a catastrophe with their fridges and all food was off (quite literally I suppose). So my son (from the Glossop end) hastily researched when we could meet for lunch, and what we could do afterwards. The Sun Inn looked good in the photos and is a short distance from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park where we planned to go afterwards. Well what a pleasant surprise! The Sun is very welcoming, dog friendly, and there is a play area outside of which my granddaughters both took advantage. The food was exceptional, and all freshly home made. One of our number is a vegetarian and she said it was so good to have such a choice of vegetarian food. In fact so appetizing did the Mushroom Wellington sound, that I had that instead of a conventional meat based Sunday roast - it was delicious. For those with more conventional Sunday roast ideas, check out the positively mountainous Yorkshires. The portions are generous, reasonably priced, and the service is very attentive and friendly. The walk at YSP afterwards was necessary to get rid of a few calories.

Really gone downhill here. The food we had was very mediocre. We arrived at 3pm, and was told it was a limited menu. I ordered a burger, which when it eventually arrived was rubbery and tasteless. I told this to the fella behind the bar, who seemed new, and he just shrugged his shoulders. The family on the next table who arrived after us were told that they had been so busy that there was hardly anything left. ( We were the only ones in the pub so hardly busy) When the guy with the shiny head came to clear their plated away, he dropped them all over the poor guy sat at the table. He was covered in sauces and all the plates were smashed. He never apologised, or offered napkins to clean up. He just scurried off for a dustpan and brush. Another couple arrived to order food, and obviously ordered something the other family had been told had run out. When the party member questioned this, she was told " we had run out and now we havent" Obviously a blatant lie. This place has really gone down hill and we wont be visiting again

This used to be great place to come to eat, sadly not anymore. The last time I came here I ended ordering the burger since most other items on the menu were not available. When the buger arrived there was no charing or flavour and the inside was completely raw. I wouldn't mind if it was intentionally served pink but it wasn't, my 7 year old can cook a burger why can't there trained chef?? Come on Sun Inn, you're going to go the same way as your neighbouring pub and be out of business if you don't buck your ideas up.

We have happy memories of past vists to the Sun and, since we were in the area, we decided to pop in for lunch. The place had a pleasant atmosphere and the staff were friendly and welcoming, but the food was really disappointing. The starter of nachos was accompanied by mysterious and bland white and green dips, which both looked as though they'd been taken straight from a jar, as did the tomato salsa. My wife's main, a New York Deli sandwich, was an even bigger let down, with stale bread and and no pastrami. (To be fair, the waitress explained that they'd run out of pastrami.) Overall, it felt as though the kitchen was understaffed and they were having to simplify their food offering accordingly, but it's not what you want when you've driven over from Wakefield expecting the quality of food you've received previously.

We had a Sunday lunch and the food was very good. One of us went for the lamb and the other chose the beef. I opted for the larger portion (extra Yorkshire pudding, more meat and roast potatoes). We also ordered a side dish of mashed potato and pigs in blankets. The menu was quite extensive with a good range of starters, main courses and deserts. We were hoping to leave room for deserts but after going for the larger portion main course there was no chance of that. However, the food we had was of a very high standard. The meat was very well cooked and plentiful. The roast potatoes were very well cooked and very tasty. Service was also very good and the restaurant/ bar was very welcoming. A great choice for Sunday Lunch.

Great Sunday lunch with friends. Delicious food and really attentive service from extremely friendly, welcoming staff, particularly one young man who served us with most of our meal. He went over and above to make sure we enjoyed our lunch. Will be back again. Thank you

We arranged a meal for our teambuilding event here and the experience was brilliant. Staff were warm and welcoming and accommodated our every need. There was a large group of us but nothing was too much trouble and everyone enjoyed the experience. Would highly recommend - a lovely relaxed environment with very clean facilities!

First time we’ve been here in a long time and decided to book for teatime Sunday lunch our waiter Corey was chatty and friendly and was very attentive throughout our stay .The food was delicious the cauliflower cheese was the best I’ve ever tasted in any restaurant I’ve eaten in (except my mums ) and the Yorkshire puddings were huge we will definitely come back and eat here again it’s cosy warm and welcoming thanks to all the staff

Lovely Christmas Lunch but we were disappointed with the selection of veg we got… no sprouts we saw that the table across from us had these but ours never arrived, when I asked if we could have some the young lad who was serving us went to ask and was told they had run out! No sprouts on Christmas Day really is unforgivable, we also asked for some more mash and that had ran out too! The meal was really delicious but they had obviously under estimated how much veg they would need so it took the shine off what would have been a perfect Christmas lunch When you pay £70 per head you expect it to be perfect Not having to shop , prep, cook and wash up was a bonus but we were all a little disappointed 👎👎👎

Called and booked table at very short notice whilst visiting our granddaughter. Had the Sunday lunch and could not fault it. Well presented and really enjoyable meals…. the biggest Yorkshire pudding!! Prices were also quite reasonable and staff attentive and friendly.Good selection of cask ales. Definitely will be back

Booked at short notice on Friday Night for my Wife, Mum and Myself. Manager greeted us on arrival, waiter showed us to our seats, was very attentive, polite and friendly. Called in for dinner on a Friday evening. I was greeted by a friendly, helpful waitress who found me a table even though I didn't have a booking. Throughout my visit the staff were attentive and helpful. The food was of excellent quality with a good choice and they had a good selection of well kept ales.This is clearly a very well run pub with a landlord who knows what they are doing and a team who work well together. I will be sure to return when I am next in the area.

Just had a lovely birthday meal with our friends and family in the sun inn, Flockton. The food was lovely as was the service. Unfortunately the experience was ruined when we were leaving after paying the bill. The manager approached us waving our Scottish £20 notes in front of everyone and said he could not accept our money. I have never been so humiliated and ashamed to be British. How great is Britain when we cannot spend our money across our own borders. A lovely experience ruined! So much for advertising staycations in the UK. The government should add the following- they will not accept your money in England, its not good enough.

I came on june 2nd 2021 for my 22nd birthday. As I was seated out on the terrace it came to light my birthday cake had been ruined on the journey to the pub. However, the lady (unsure of her name sorry!!) was so thoughtful and helpful I cannot say thank you again. She knew how upset I was as my cake had been specially made. She did everything in her very best effort to put it back together to look presentable. The food was lovely and the cocktails! I can honestly say the whole night was some of the best hospitality manners I have seen in a long time and I couldn’t be anymore grateful. I can imagine the hospitality and pub sector has been quite hard recently opening back up, but everyone was cheerful and happy to help so thank you!

Warm cosy pub which is doggie friendly :) Lovely homely food and friendly staff. You can sit in or out. There is a children’s playing area also. Screens next to the tables and socially distanced. After visiting the Yorkshire Sculpture Park we decided to try somewhere different for lunch. The Sun Inn was a great choice, the pub has loads of character and is in a beautiful location. I don't usually bother with a starter but i am glad l did the breaded brie was lovely. Then onto mains well it has to be one of the best Sunday dinners i have ever had. Two of us had beef and the others opted for lamb and turkey and they were accompanied by quality homemade Yorkshire puddings and the freshest seasonal veg. My husband enjoyed the Timothy Taylor Landlord and four pints later at least i didn't mind the drive back to South Yorkshire. Thank you for a safe and very enjoyable lunch we will be back.

We always enjoy the lovely Sunday lunch here. Felt a bit nervous venturing out as we have been shielding for such a long time. No need to worry they have it sorted. Screens between tables staff all wearing visors and piping hot food. The staff couldnt have been more accomodating and the food as usual was delicious we will be back soon!

Halfway stop on 8 mile walk/cycle ride. Wonderful lunch and Superb Taylor's Landlord beer sat in the sunshine on the attractive terrace with fine views over the countryside.Attentive staff and deserves to do well. Dog friendly and half price meals Monday to Wednesday in August. (Doesn't include alcoholic drinks).

Valentines meal been to the sun now quite a few times over the past 6 months mainly for Sunday lunch and we have never been disappointed the Sunday lunch is excellent So we decided to try evening meal for Valentine’s Day and must say another excellent meal two very friendly host Wayne and jo nothing too much trouble and the girls waiting on the tables very polite would recommend the sun if your looking for nice food and good host and nice atmosphere and loverly log fire pete Julie Carlton Barnsley

Food is great, the size of the Yorkshire Puds is amazing!! Today though I was disappointed not by the food, staff, but by dogs. We sat between two tables with a dog, one a very smelly one not pleasant when your eating, the other one eating food on the floor given by its owners. The points I am going to make are as follows : As a dog owner I do not take my dog to somewhere to eat as I feel there is a time and place, its not on a Sunday afternoon where others are eating. Secondly, these people with all due respect would not allow there dog to sit under the dining room table in their own home, so why would the inflict that on other diners. Inconsiderate really.

Wow!.Been for Christmas dinner today with family and have to say this was the best we've ever had.The pub was very busy and the staff were all very tentative and looked after us very well.The food was beautiful and presented perfectly.Everything was just spot on.10 out of 10 to Jo and Wayne and all the girls for their hard work which made our Christmas Day lunch just perfect.Can't wait for next year.

The Sun is our local village pub and we visit fairly often.Last time we were in we saw the board advertising fish and chips Friday so decided to visit and sample. Pub was very busy but shown to a table swiftly by a friendly waitress and drinks order taken and food order made very soon after.Fish and chips arrived after a short wait and were gorgeous, lovely tasty Fish, superb light batter and nice peas and accompniments.Must be the best food I have ever had. Normally I would never order Fish and chips in a restaurant but was impressed. 10 out of 10.

Booked a table for 6 on a Saturday night, odd local men staring constantly at us whilst at the bar. Sat down next to radiator as was freezing out, radiator wasn’t on! So cold in eating area. Was asked what drinks we wanted on way to our table! No drinks menu offered and couldn’t even wait until we were seated to ask. Said he’d be back in few mins for our food order after been given menu. Twenty mins past, he’d not been to take our food order, four work men came in and sat next table but one to us and we’re loud, we decided to pay for our drinks and left. The man said, “Oh sorry I forgot to come take your order,” not what you expect for a date night on a Saturday. Makes you wonder how fresh the food is when there’s only you there to eat on a Saturday night! Wouldn’t ever visit again.
