A great Pub restaurant. A good friendly room Service was excellent. I took my two nephews and wives so it was a special evening. Four of us had the bree starter which was both filling in a good way and slightly different.. My eldest nephew had the whitebait., which as it disappeared so quickly said it all. He had the steak and ale pudding whilst we four all had the Fishermans basket. A wide range of differing types with crunchy chip. It was served in a large oblong basket. Seemingly all fashioned and yet somehow very modern. A great meal in a nice place

Lovely old Pub with a good Garden and ample parking. It does feel like its in dangerous need of new customers as it's always so quiet. could do with a tidy up inside but hard to invest without trade! The Beer selection could be better, with a better premium. Would love to see Moretti or Estrella on tap or maybe Cruz Campo. Friendly bar staff.

Oh my heavens what a Jem and the food is beautiful. We were staying at a pub /hotel 5 minutes up the road and we wanted ‘proper food’ and this pub did fantastic food. We both had a starter which was very tasty, I had chicken and bacon pasta which was wonderful and my husband had a pork chop which was as big as your hand but he really enjoyed it and the treacle tart was delicious and so much better than school and it was with cream, hubby loved his lighter ice cream with Chantilly cream. This pub was warm and friendly, hubby said the beer was good and the staff were friendly and efficient. It was an absolute pleasure to visit and eat there. We would recommend a visit to this pub, we only wish were there over the weekend for Sunday lunch as after eating there mid week I can only imagine how good a Sunday meal they serve

After reading good reviews, gave this pub a try! Booked a table, in case it was busy. We were the only diners, they'd set us a table with a candle which was sweet! No wine menu, but wine offered was good, cold and fair price. Food took a while, but was lovely and tasty at a good price. Staff very friendly. A very 'locals' pub, would visit again if in the area.

We were staying at the Great Danes hotel and decided to walk into Hollingbourne to find a pub with food. What a great place we chose. The food was excellent. Really nicely presented. My brother had the steak suet pud. Wow the chunks of meat in it!! My husband had the fish assortment in basket. I had the pate and garlic prawns. All delicious. Very friendly staff and gorgeous boxer dog. All in all an excellent village pub with a good assortment of ale and food.

Lunch with my family on a Saturday afternoon - very friendly staff, great selection of hand pulled beers kept in good condition. Menu basic but excellent quality food. We had Lincolnshire sausages in a sandwich, Cajun chicken and bacon in a sandwich, a baked potato with chilli and cheese, and cheesy chips. The food was quite slow to arrive, but obviously all cooked fresh so well worth the wait and much better than having precooked food reheated. The sandwiches were all delicious, the chips were lovely and crispy with a nice fluffy centre, you really could not ask for more. Also a lovely eclectic feel to the place, olde-worlde and homely with lots of little cosy nooks inside and a nice garden outside. Give it a try!

There are three pubs in Hollingbourne, each worthy in their own way. But while the Dirty Habit and The Windmill are effectively restaurants serving drinks, the Sugar Loaves is very much a pub serving food. A proper pub, in other words. Friendly, unfancy, with great beer and an excellent, if limited, menu which will not break the bank. Six of us enjoyed a generous freshly cooked Sunday lunch in the very relaxing company of locals and their dogs and we will certainly be back.

We were travelling back home from Canterbury via Leeds Castle, and came across the Sugar Loaves at Hollingbourne.Although we had not booked a table,, we were offered a table, on one of their busiest days with the Christmas Market at Leeds Castle just "down the road".The Sunday Lunches were freshly cooked, a good selection of Chicken breast, and vegtables and roast potatoes and very reasonable priced. The only slight downside was the swede had an odd taste, and when we asked the waitress she said, that "most people ask that question", and that lemon juice is added, which was not to our taste, now was it for other diners sitting near us.Might be an idea to make that an option to ask customers first if they wanted that added?Dave and Sandra, Bev and Bob.

Booked a table for Four, Saturday evening 7 o’clock. The pub was completely empty and had no atmosphere at all. Sitting at the bar was a very stroppy landlord who had a very bad attitude. The girl behind the bar was serving drinks and waitressing . She told us that it wasn’t busy because there was an event taking place up the road. The truth of the matter is that the food is poor and overpriced- reason for no customers

So Hollingbourne, a beautiful village near Maidstone - a tad gentrified( lots of Chelsea tractors to seen) lovely, If now a bit worn gastro eateries, sharing chicken on a bread board that type of thing and then there is the Sugar Loaves! Now I was in the village to get my hair cut ( Paper Scissors Stone - chaps, great barbering experience by very skilled young lady in lovely barbers chairs- I recommend) and it was lunchtime and the Sugar loaves was - sort of - next door, and I had always been meaning to pop in, so good bits of the Guardian and the sport in the Mirror - I girded my loins - glass of pino, smoked chipotle nuts from the artisan jar, thought I !Wrong diddily wrong diddily wrong wrong wrong -NO PROPER PUB- half a dozen proper blokes having a proper chin wag, a friendly dog , and a warm welcome from the bar keep ( female - very on trend)- no wall of silence as I walked in but a good morning and - alright ! Before resuming the chin wag- real ale choices ( exit Pinot stage left pursued by my boot)- a great pale ale purchased, I thought - bugger the nuts to and asked for the menu. De - light! proper Pub food, door stop sandwiches of cheese or warm beef, cheesy chips - and sausage and mash with peas!My heart melted and I succame, freshly cooked, I think, by the landlord, three proper Lincolnshire sausages ( could have been locally though) - bloody lovely, they, deserve a bloody lovely, along with the proper whole grain mustard mash, gravy peas, proper gravy and onions- it was the very stuff of perfection/ chaps chatting in the bar proper food coming out- the dog prowling- sugar loaves thank you! Our party of 8 visited the sugar loaves for dinner on sat 9th March and, I will be honest, after not being able to get in elsewhere, our expectations were not particularly high. We were the only people eating, and after a lengthy wait (45 mins) for our starters we feared the worst. How wrong we were! King Prawns in chilli sauce, balsamic mushrooms on ciabatta, dipping Camembert with garlic bread and breaded whitebait - all were plentiful, well presented, hot and delicious. The theme continued when the mains arrived, cheese and bacon burgers ( with onion rings and delicious triple cooked fries), lamb shanks falling off the bone, steak and ale puddings with the tenderest meat and chicken tagliatelle - each dish met with unanimous approval. To finish, an assortment of coffees and, in my case, sticky toffee pudding with double cream which was amazing. The price of £34 per head including 3 rounds of drinks was very reasonable indeed and the whole experience far exceeded our expectations. Thank you Sugar Loaves - I’m sure we will return! Nick B.

Visited here on Friday for dinner. There were only two other people eating but it still took one hour and 10 minutes to be served. Our main courses were hot but the potatoes and veg were cold, not even warm! Seems the veg had been served up and then sat waiting for ages for the mains to be added. The only saving grace was the delightful young lady who seemed to be doing everything on her own....working behind the bar, taking food orders, clearing tables and serving food. She was lovely. Would never go back though...food wasn’t good.

Went to the Sugar Loaves to see a band advertised on Facebook which we’ve seen at lots of different pubs. Arrived there excited to see the band to be told that it was ticket only (there were 4 people in the bar) we asked how much tickets were to be told they were free!!! We asked if we could have tickets to be told that well you can come in but if I get more than 200 people in here I’ll lose my licence - landlord then walked off to serve someone else! We then got our drinks from a girl behind the bar went into the garden to see the band there was a maximum of 40 people out there. Really? Surely the point of having a band is to attract more customers. Friends arrived half an hour after us to have exactly the same treatment. I would have walked out if I didn’t want to see friends and the band.

The website showed two courses for £10.95 or 3 courses for £13.95. The young girl who seemed to be the barmaid/waitress said she knew nothing about it. I showed her it on my phone and she said that did not apply. I queried why it was on the website and she told me that the website was being updated. It still says it 2 days later, which makes me feel that they are having people in by giving false expectations. If the website is not correct it should be shut down whilst being redone. We certainly had to pay a lot more than £10.95 each for our two courses! I do feel rather conned! The food was nice, but quite a few things on the menu were not available. My friend could not have any dish that he really wanted for starter or main, due to them being unavailable. The draught beer ran out half way through the evening to the astonishment of us and other tables!

Old world type pub serves Green king products in the way of beers that I personally do not like but they do a guest beer that's not bad . Her indoors decided to go and eat at this picture post card village she picked the place we sat and perused the menu made our choice I ordered meat pudding with veg . Good choice plenty of it in fact filled me up so much I did not have an evening meal. I personally loath these so called pubs that have gone over to food and serve up a Picasso on a plate, I want food not art and they charge you an arm and a leg for a mince morsel .(Only on criticism use real potato's not POM) This place looks old but the cook or chef sure aint a sloop jokey He or She certainly knows how to cook suite pudding first class . My hubby and I had a trip to Kent from Wiltshire to visit family and this pub used to be a favourite for some family members,so we thought we would give it a try. When I booked I was told it wouldn't be busy around 6.30 - 7 so we booked. When we arrived, the car park was empty, and there was only one person drinking. We were told to sit wherever we wanted, the tables were totally empty. We took our seats and ordered a drink each, then we were given the menu. The menu is very limited.Starters, I had nachos, hubby and m.i.l both had pate. The pate were nice and the nachos passable, a little more sauce would have been nice.and when we came to order the main course, my husband's first choice was sold out, I had the last salmon, and my mother in law had the mushroom tagliatelli. My salmon came with prawns, but as I'm allergic, they cooked it without. The salmon was lovely as were the potatoes and sauce, but just wish there had been some green beans or something. Hubby had the sausage and mash, sausages were not the best but mash was lovely. The tagliatelli sadly was very bland, I tasted it too and it was just like the pasta had been taken from the water and put on the plate, rather dissapointing, there was also so much of it, a little less with maybe some veg would be better? Although the food was dissapointing, the staff (two young ladies) were really lovely and couldn't apologise enough about the pasta. We finished with a coffee and then left. All the time we were there the phone didn't ring with anyone booking and nobody else came in, so the atmosphere was lacking too. Sadly we won't be recommending it to anyone else. Stick to good old british pub food.

We headed to the Sugar Loaves today after a visit to nearby Leeds Castle. There's a good size car park available next to the garden area at the back. We were warmly greeted and offered a choice of tables for our party of three. The barman was happy to recommend the Sussex ale and there was a decent selection of wines by the glass. The menu provided a range of meals as well as lighter options such as jacket potatoes, sandwiches and ploughmans all at very reasonable prices. We all chose fish and chips which was excellent, hot and tasty and a hearty plateful. The pub and atmosphere was cosy, service was with a smile. We shall happily return.

I can't believe the positive reviews about this pub/restaurant because my two experiences here have been terrible. On our first visit we asked if we could have Sunday lunch and were told No they had finished early that day. My second visit was again greeted with hostility and the most un-friendly bar staff imaginable, well sorry to ruin your cosy chat by asking for a drink, I won't bother you again!! I would also suggest that anyone using this pub checks their bill carefully, whilst there last Friday another customer queried his bill stating that there were a large number of drinks on there that he hadn't ordered, the customer was perfectly polite and reasonable but the bar maid immediately became defensive, shouting and threatening the customer....Possibly he wasn't a local either so wasn't welcome or maybe they had an audit due and had to find a way to make the short fall disappear!

Большое спасибо, "The Sugar Loaves" !

Squeezed between two gastro pubs we were pleased to find this little gem - somewhere doing ordinary pub food at great prices. Nothing spectacular, just good honest food plus a mid week seniors' menu for below £10 for two courses.

After an expensive meal at our hotel, we ventured to this pub in hopes of a more reasonable meal. We found a gem.A family of 6, with two ravenous teenagers and a food allergy thrown in and the landlady didn't bat an eye. The food was like home and attention was paid to each diner. We were a long way from home and this comfort meant a lot. If one of the choices for the roast dinner is lamb - pick it! I had no idea lamb could be so tender or yummy. All 6 plates were clean as a whistle - every time! Needless to say, after we found it we ate dinner there 3 out of 4 nights! Some variation if others are manning the bar, but that is to be expected.

This really was a great shame. We went to Leeds castle and on the way out we were hungry and saw a sign for the Sugar Loaves so we thought we would try it out especially after seeing some good reviews on trip advisor. When we got there the initial reaction was it is such a beautiful pub and kept its old wooden beams. The menu looked nice, traditional pub food was just what the doctor ordered. When speaking with the staff (who were very friendly and helpful) it turns out pretty much all the food is shop bought and apart from battering there own cod they don't do anything apart from reheat or cook the food. I think it's also important to point out this pub isn't exactly cheap either.Such a shame, but regardless I had the steak and ale suet pudding, all the vegetables were so overcooked and i suspect had just been nuked in the microwave. The suet pudding was distinctly average at best. My girlfriend had chicken which was again greatly overcooked. When it came to drinks the only larger they served was fosters (devil spawn) although for a small pub you don't expect a huge selection but come on guys fosters really is scraping the barrel. So all in all apart from the beautiful pub itself and the friendly nice staff I can't find any good points about the pub. So sorry as I really wanted to like it.

The best Christmas Lunch I have ever had when eating out. Prompt, friendly service, really hot food, good sized portions and very reasonable price. I will be coming here regularly in future.

Called in on a Saturday lunchtime. Friendly welcome and efficient service, although the speed of service wouldn't have been difficult since the restaurant was empty. It was also cold and unfortunately the food didn't stay warm very long either. Some of the items were things that simply needing warming up or heating in an oven and sadly too much of it was not cooked enough. The beer and wine were decent but overall for the money it left us wishing we'd tried somewhere else. As a passing visitor it wasn't worth arguing about so we just left, disappointed, especially after picking the place deliberately based on other people's good reviews.

We had booked in advance as we were staying nearby at Leeds Castle. The food is good pub food and plenty of it, fish and chips was great and my teenage boys enjoyed their sausages and burger meals. Service was variable, the older staff very friendly and helpful but a rather prickly younger waitress.

Booked to have a birthday meal here, have been a couple of times before. I had the pastie not a normal pastie a bit flat, but definitely home made. Very tasty, even though there was a lot of pastry for me personally. My husband had the sizzling steak which he really enjoyed and he managed to eat some of the pastry as well from my pastie. No mean portions here. Very friendly staff. Couldn't do enough for you. have been on the Saturday steak nights as well excellent value for money, especially when they throw in a free bottle of wine. If you like a good old value traditional pub this is the place to go.

Went here on Saturday for a friends Birthday who live nearby. It was steak night which means 2 steak dinners and a bottle of wine for £25, and it was a bargain, I had the 10oz rump and my wife had the 8oz ribeye, Both were cooked exactly to our liking, the portions were very generous and the quality of the ingredients were top notch. The owners were so friendly and accommodating. We had such a good meal we have booked to go back for our Daughters 21st. I have absolutely no negative comments for this pub. A great Pub with great Pub Grub definitely worth a visit.

Visited after a day at Leeds castle which is only minutes away by car.Very friendly with good choice of food on the menu, reasonably priced. Traditional English pub food plus a few extras. Well presented and good portions. Food is served all day. We got there around 6pm with friends and were the only ones there. Such is the cosy atmosphere that we did not feel lost. Good service from the owners who were most welcoming. Just as we finished our main course the Mrs. told us she was just taking a home made apple crumble out of the oven. It was delicious and generous portions . We will certainly go again when visiting that area of Kent next.

Received a warm welcome, good service and the food was excellent. Three of our party had the homemade steak pie and myself the scampi all meals were well presented and hot. Nice choice of puddings and luxury ice cream including a ginger one which was very lovely. Ended the meal with a cup of coffee and all felt very satisfied.

We ate here when staying at the Mercure Great Danes hotel a short distance away. The menu was typical pub grub but the food was great. I had the cod and chips and my husband the steak and both were delicious, while the stem ginger icecream to follow was to die for. The owners were friendly and made us very welcome. If we are in the area again we will definitely go back. There are not many typical old village pubs left and they need to be treasured.

I have driven pass this pub many times and always wondered what it was like. Having seen an effort by the new owners to improve the pub I visited recently and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was and particularly about how helpful everybody was in the pub.The owner was very attentive and helpful explaining where the garden was and coming to take our food order. The food was wholesome and inexpensive from a wide ranging menu. It was delivered quickly. There was plenty of beer selection on draught. For Leeds Castle visitors it is very convenient about a mile away just follow the signs from the exit.Being a local I shall be visiting again.

We are from the United States and after a few hours at Leeds Castle we had a craving for fish and chips. We saw Sugar Loaves sign at the Leeds car park exit and decided to head on over. It was Friday afternoon and they were advertising their Thai night. The very friendly waiter said she would check to see if we could still get Fish and Chips as they were switching to Thai Food for dinner. We had a pint of Bitter in the garden and she said no problem they could do Fish and Chips. The food came out fast and it was wonderful, we were traveling with a local couple and they said that the fish and chips were first rate. I think the place is run by a husband and wife team and they were very friendly and inviting. Definately go there. Two thumbs way up.

Quite good for a basic unpretentious Sunday lunch. Sweet beer garden but otherwise pub is unprepossessing . Syrup pudding was good and homemade.Limited menu choices. Reasonably priced but don't think we'll be returning as we weren't enthralled.

Visited this pub after a Segway tour of Leeds castle, and had the Gammon Steak. One of our party had the burger (1/2 pounder!), and let me try a bit, it was absolutely amazing, so good that I had to go back to the pub to have it!The service was very friendly and the food came out quickly, while we enjoyed a (very decent) pint of lager. The burger was as good as I remembered it, and even more so! The portion size was gargantuan, and the sides were plentiful.Overall one of the best burgers I've had, in a lovely village pub, I will definitely be back for more!

We stayed at the Days Inn and checked out Trip Advisor for best places to eat nearby and this certainly did not disappoint! There were 10 of us and they accommodated us on tables next to each other. The kids loved playing in the garden where they had bikes for them too! Food was lovely, everyone enjoyed it and prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again one day.

Went to ' Friday Night is Thai Night' again at The Sugar Loaves to see if it was still as good - well I have to say it was even better. Now that people are discovering it, it was quite full.I had King Prawn stir-fry and we both had starters and main courses as well as drinks. The price for two was £34 which I considered very reasonable for such an exotic meal.It is probably a good idea to book now as it is getting busier. I would thoroughly recommend it.Jim

Atmosphere in the pub was warm and welcoming. Tables clean and laid up nicely. The food was obviously home cooked, fresh and good value. I personally feel it trumps its pretentious neighbour for value and welcome. Will visit again next year when we're down and check out sunday lunch!

The Sugar Loaves is a bit unprepossessing really but the staff are friendly and the place is warm.On Friday night they have a Thai chef and waitress and the food is unbelievably authentic and very reasonably priced. The menu is quite extensive and the food is just as we remember Thai food to be and the waitress is just as gracious as you would expect. We would thoroughly recommend it.

I ate at the Sugar Loaves with my family on a Sunday. With 17 of us, we pretty much took up the whole of the small restaurant but it was nice that we were together. The Sunday lunch menu is such terrific value at £7.50 and the food is all home cooked to a very good standard. It was lovely to have proper roast potatoes with a crispy outer, rather than the usual frozen standard. The chef - who I presume is also the landlady - came out and told us exactly what was available so we all managed to get our choice of meat. The food was served quickly and with a smile. Pudding was also lovely and traditional. I would definitley go back again as this experience was how I feel Sunday pub lunches should be.I do have to apologise to the poor barmaid who had to put up with my son's tales of his friends parties!!!Thank you

We were on our way back from Chilham and the 'I'm hungry' started from the children in the back seats. I remembered a couple of pubs in Hollingbourne that I visited years ago that were on our way home so we headed to this small village so see if I could find them. We pulled into the car park of The Sugar Loaves and went inside in the hope of a quick lunch. The inside if the pub is a little small and we were lucky to find a free table for the four of us. It was very lucky in fact because the food was lovely - all freshly cooked and good portion size too. Prices were reasonable and what I would expect to pay in a village pub.The people running the pub seemed genuinely grateful for our custom and thanked us for visiting and for our favourable comments about the food - that meant a lot to us. Friendliness in an industry like this is remembered and will ensure that I tell lots of people to go here including the readers of this review - so go!

We visited on a Saturday evening for a family birthday. The food (Cheese burger and cod & chips) was great and good service. Desserts were nice and big, sadly I didn’t get a picture before we dug in! Lovely classic pub atmosphere. Would be good if they had menus as you have to read off the board which an older guest found difficult, but ultimately we had a lovely meal. Will be returning.

Popped in for afternoon tea with a voucher. We come every year for my Birthday and this year was still fabulous. Service has got alot quicker and our servers looked after us asking if we wanted more coffee. The ham in the sandwichs was particularly delious and the warm scones were just yummy. Coffee from here is the best and yes I say that every year! Best of all you can have as many cup as you wanted. Shame it's a hours drive to get there but we will be back!
