The Oak on the Green in Maidstone

I’ve not visited for a few years but went the other evening with friends. I appreciate it has changed hands to a shepherd Neame pub but it was nowhere near the standard it use to be. The meal was quite small but the service was lovely and extremely polite

Christmas lunch at the Oak on The Green was simply superb. The atmosphere was convivial, the waitresses and manager were forever helpful and efficient, and the food was simply top notch, hot and plentiful. To be repeated I hope!

As always great atmostsphere, liked the banter when we arrived (red card), staff very pleasant & attentive. Noting other reviews, didnt have any problem with the portion sizes, more than ample and the food quality was excellent. I had salmon linguine & my friend had bangers and mash, lovely. Desserts also very good - well fed. Will be back.

The atmosphere was very cosy and inviting. We love old pubs full of character and this one is one of our favourites. The service was very good, with all servers being attentive and friendly. The food was excellent and the drinks were fabulous. If you are looking after a cosy, inviting pub with lots of character, great service and brilliant food, this is the one for you. Highly recommend!

It was very busy but there was a good atmosphere. We were shown to our table and we realised the place was a lot larger than I had anticipated. The food was delicious and we had a great time. The waiting staff were kind, courteous and friendly.

I chose Smoked Salmon as a starter costing £6..0p This arrived as just a small sliver of Salmon on a piece of sourdough bread plus cream cheese. I felt this was expensive.If the Restaurant was short of Salmon then we should have been advised!! The main course was very good.

We went to the Oak on the Green in Bearsted for a family meal. The atmosphere of the pub/restaurant was warm, cheerful and cosy! The service that we received was professional and friendly and our food was delivered in good timing, so that we didn't feel rushed! All out meals (chicken parmigiano, fish and chips, smashed burger) were perfectly cooked and delicious! We had a great night out and will be back!

We had a lovely lunch here sitting at the tables outside. The staff were kind enough to turn on the heaters so we were warm enough in spite of it being November. The food was delicious and well priced. One thing to watch out for is that the food took some time to arrive, but it was worth the wait.

Authentic atmosphere, great food, drink and service!

We went to Fish on the green many months ago, (Review further down.) and was blown away with it, so we thought we would give Oak on the green a go for my daughters birthday. Service- The waiting staff were excellent, friendly and helpful, the problem was the amount of things that were not available, out of the main meals we chose between the 4 of us, 3 were unavailable, I understand this happens sometime, but it would of been nice to have been told that when she took the order, instead of a constant toing and froing and then having to look at the menu again, just got a bit annoying. We ordered nibbles for the table, a couple of nacho plates, but they turned up with the starters so we started to feel a bit rushed, this was continued at the end of the meal, we ordered desserts and coffee, only to be told 2 minutes later that the coffee machine had been shut down for the night, it wasn't even 9pm, as we had our desserts we heard a big booming "Last orders please." it was 9:15. The whole affair just felt rushed, I feel they should not have taken a 7:30 booking if they wanted to wrap up early. Food - The quality of the food was excellent and it was beautifully cooked it's not a cheap place, and had we not felt quite so rushed, it would of been worth the money.

We turned up last minute without a booking to use a Birthday voucher on a busy Saturday night. We knew it was a big ask, after seeing our faces when told everything was fully booked, the staff bent over backwards and made arrangements to squeeze us in and it was a flawless experience from start to finish. Prompt, delicious food, lovely atmosphere, staff super attentive and polite. Cannot recommend the place enough. Thank you to the team for a lovely evening. We’ll be back!

Family lunch time visit, restaurant was quite busy, drinks came quickly but a slight delay on taking our food order but when the food did appear it was well presented and a very ample portion size (fajitas) which to be honest could have been shared.

Had a really nice lunch there although the food was a long time coming. Our waitress Annie was lovely. She couldn't have been more helpful. Even chased up our food and apologised more than once for the delay. A delightful young lady.

Went there to remind us of our first date but ribs no longer on the menu. Ordered a prawn cocktail but burnt my mouth & throat as covered with Paprika. Wanted a peaceful lunch but waitress put a family with small children on the table next to us. I have earring aids so had to take them out. Did not have a dessert just paid & left never to make another visit there again.

We never got to eat there. I called to make enquiries regarding gluten free food. My husband is celiac. I was told that there was nothing really available for him to eat on the menu. Most pubs/restaurants have always been very helpful and have always offered some gluten free options. Very disappointing.

A gorgeous looking pub with a very cosy interior. The food was delicious. Very friendly & helpful staff, couldn’t do enough for us. Plenty of parking to the side of pub & right near to the village green.

Even though it was very busy, the service was super. We didn't wait long for our meals and the staff were brilliant.

We had a lovely time at the Oak on the Green to celebrate my Grandma's birthday. The service was great, accurate and attentive (our waitress was Ruby), and we really enjoyed our starters, mains and desserts. There is always such a warm, friendly atmosphere in this pub.

Food was ok. Being a Chef I'm very critical. Pudding could be better. Atmosphere is ok if you like loud people chatting. Not for the romantics on a busy evening.

Had a great night. Food was good and Becca was brilliant! Quick service all round. Had a lovely birthday. We’ll be back soon.

Had the ribeye steak, and was very disappointed , completely ruined by salt. I've Never had a steak so salty! 'Chef, Did the lid fall off the salt shaker?' My boyfriend said his was salty too. By about half way through what looked like a nice steak all I could taste was salt, not beef. Won't come here again. Shame as nice place x

We hadn’t eaten here for sometime but was pleasantly surprised. We both had a burger & chips & to be honest we weren’t expecting anything special. OMG they were the best burger & chips we have had anywhere! The portions were a good size & they tasted amazing. Just about had room for dessert which didn’t disappoint. The service by Dammi was excellent. We will definitely be returning.

Amazing dinner at the Oak last night before the Hazlitt show on the green. Paul and the team were welcoming as always and the food was incredible. I had the sticky duck rice bowl and enjoyed it so much I’m going to try to recreate it tonight at home. Thanks again Paul and the team!

An authentic English experience in a very pleasant setting. Friendly staff and excellent food

The food was disappointing today Ordered a sharing snack of chillie con carne and cheesy nacho's for two . The chillie con carne was hard to find and the cheese was even harder . There also was a minimal amount of sour cream We also ordered another sharing snack of bread, meats and cheese , the charcuterie, which was also disappointing. A tiny triangle of cheese and no chutney . More bread than anything else and a tiny portion of balsamic oil . The cold meat was ok . Total amount paid was £30.50 . Regrettably, I will not be eating at the oak on the green in the future.

Only had a quick dinner (nachos) but really nice with a great pint.

What used to be a great restaurant is now distinctly average. The quality of ingredients has dropped and it is no longer somewhere for a special occasion. Such a shame. Food items missing from meals but no explanation until asked...perhaps hoping we did not notice and poor quality, tiny desserts.

Ate here this evening with friends. Been before many times. Had fish ‘n chips. Must have changed their chips as they were dry, hard and not hot. Doesn’t take much effort to cook chips, Batter was over cooked which spoiled the fish

Lovely first time visit to this restaurant. There were 4 of us, and we enjoyed everything we ordered. The portions were big enough to enjoy the main and dessert without feeling like you've overdid it eating too much. The staff were friendly and provided great service. We will definitely plan to visit again!

Rotary club of Maidstone Dawn Patrol social evening was a resounding success due to the attentive staff and excellent food.

I have eaten at this great place many many times and have always been very happy with the food however I was at the venue Sunday and the food was of poor quality i maybe eat half of it although the manager gave me a 25% discount which I accepted i still felt cheated and wondered if I'll return regards Jeff

Classic British pub, no surprise, you can get fish and chips here and other standard fare. Felt a little more like a pub than a restaurant. We ordered a variety of dishes from the bartender, and they delivered to a very comfortable outside table. Loved the traditional style Shepherd Naeme selections they had on tap my crew put back the foam less Master brew and Spitfire pints served perfectly. Taught the bartender how to make a Snakebite strange as I was the American, but whatever he got, it figured out. Great bar setup and food faired well. Skin on hand breaded Haddock fish and chips spot , although the mushed served warm kind of off setting and odd taste. The chicken burger and other selections are solid as well. Would have included a photo of the 3 onion rings as a side, but my mate, eat them in up in no time flat. Value diners should hard pass on that as it wasn't a great portion. Overall, it was a good experience and worth a look if your in the area

Had lunch there in January. We asked for a specific table and got it. Staff were really decent and welcoming, and the ambiance of the pub always makes it a pleasure to visit. Food was excellent and we didnt have to wait too long but long enough to know that it actually had to be cooked. couldnt fault it. Highly recommend

Lovely to be in such a busy and vibrant pub on a Friday night. A good selection of food and drink with friendly service.

We used to love this place, we have been many times before but it seems to have really gone down hill! We came for a birthday meal on a Monday, waited an hour for our food, and it was just rubbish pub grub, bland, thrown on the plate with no care! Fire alarm went off loudly whilst we were eating, steak was grisly and unseasoned and the menu is now so limited! I used to recommend this place to everyone but I won’t be doing that and I won’t be visiting again. Such a shame, it used to be so nice!

The food is delicious, I'm a tourist and I love this food

Decided to try this pub/ restaurant yesterday as I had a birthday voucher to use with Shepherd Neame and this was one of the pubs participating. Never having been there before me and my partner decided to dine there. We arrived late afternoon so the restaurant was fairly quiet, although the bar area was still very busy. We both opted for the haddock and chips which was cooked beautifully. The waitress was friendly and efficient. Based on our experience we would not hesitate to dine there again if in the area.

Working away from home and a Google search brings up a well rated pub with food. Oak on the Green a wonderful experience with friendly staff serving great food at a good price. Thank you

Very disappointing visit . Service very poor , long wait for food despite it being quiet when we ordered , when the food arrived it lacked seasoning and was tasteless , such a shame used to be so good .

I have been to this pub/restaurant many times more so when the old owners ran the franchise which was I’d say value for your money. Since being bought by shepherd Neame,it’s gradually lost its appeal. Menu’s have changed,and not for the good either,it’s more expensive,and the portions once its forte have really declined. Steak? I used to always have the 30 day aged porterhouse I forget the weight,but usually cost about £27-£29. That’s with your chips,tomatoes,onion rings and a flat mushroom. Now you get a similar meal less steak 10z ribeye,with a portion of chips in a little bucket,mushrooms,and a few tomatoes on a vine for £27. I’m sorry Shepherd and Neame,for me,you have totally destroyed this once very affordable chain! Sadly I won’t be coming back.

Unfortunately not the place I remember. This was the second time in recent weeks we have ate there and the food quality has really deteriorated. The other week I thought it may be down to the wrong choice however this evening proved it has significantly dropped in quality. Saying that my husbands steak was really good however the overall meal was ruined by plastic in my food. I have received an apology from the manager who also completed an incident form and fortunately I was not harmed so i do not wish to take the matter further. However overall following this and the last meal we will not eat there again.

They’ve still got it. A great place for a relaxed but delicious meal. Lots of tasty specials. Good selection of wine. Friendly and efficient service.

The Lady that served us was lovely and great at her job, sadly the food was disappointing apart from burger or steak 3 of us did not rate the food, we did hand over this and was advised to say before we ate it which I do understand but when your out for a birthday meal to have to send food back and then sit waiting for other food isn’t nice so we chose not to, wouldn’t go back

Ordered kofta with salad and baba ghanoush. Koftas were okay, but salad was a few bits of wilted lettuce with four slices of pickled cabbage and the baba ghanoush was tasteless. Thought I’d have a special hot chocolate as that couldn’t be as bad - wrong. Lukewarm and not very nice.

Lovely pub, good drinks choice and food was amazing

Having not visited this pub for dinner for a while, and after having mixed feedback from friends. I must admit we were hesitant about whether we should take our friends there…. But … We were not disappointed and will return!! Despite being mega busy we received amazing service. Attentive enough without pushy and we were well looked after by our friendly waitress. Food was tasty, scotch egg little over done in the middle but didn’t spoil the actual taste. The chilli beef nachos were a great hit. When the Haddock arrived they were big enough to surf on lol. Very fresh and again large portion of fajita chicken and a couple of us even had room for deserts (not sure how) but they managed a banoffee pie and a crumble. Really good place to visit with tasty food, large portions and a buzzy atmosphere

Very busy pub, every table taken, so I would suggest to book. Not much room for just drinks. The food was excellent and freshly cooked. The Haddick was delicious, as was the switch egg. Service was great, really friendly staff.

Me and my family have been visiting here for a few years now. Unfortunately the past couple of visits, the food has been inedible. Undercooked and under flavoured. Unfortunately we will not be back ☹️

As an international visitor, I love coming to this pub when I'm in town. Friendly service, great food, in a lively fun atmosphere.

2 weeks ago I ate Prawn and crayfish Linguine tasted really nice ,lots if chilli.with in a hour of eating my meal I become very unwell,I knew straight away it was food poisoning. I called the pub about 2 hrs later from my bed.they were very concerned and I had to contact head office. I filled a form out explaining that it had to be my meal as I'd not really eaten much that day..Yesterday I had the results and no surprise they couldn't find any trace of bug so decided I'd probably already has caught the pub ,they were very condescending and no real concern for me as a customer..,sorry but I thought in most cases the customer is always right I knew for certain it was their food. So just be aware that obviously food poisoning isn't taken that seriously with an individual I am a diabetic and this could have been an even worse outcome

It was ok, given it was Mothering Sunday and the restaurant was very busy, food and service was ok.

This place never stops being awesome. I have eaten here over a dozen times and never had a bad meal. The staff are always friendly and there is always a nice atmosphere - even the customers are lovely. The food is always exceptional and I recommend it to all my friends and family. They update the menu regularly which is great because it’s nice to try new dishes. Continues to be one of my favourite places so highly recommend.

I have been going to the Oak for years in fact in was my favourite place. However, my last two visits the service has been slow (took an hour for three sandwiches to be delivered to the table, in a half empty restaurant) which were cold and only half filled. I thought maybe It was just a bad day, so visited again., the pie we had was so hard on the top (probably where it had been sitting under a heat lamp for so long) we couldn’t eat it.The Brie starter has been changed and was tasteless. Both occasions we have given feedback. Menu has changed more in line with a chain unfortunately, and is limited. Please go back to your great menu, with good service and produce that is quality and freshly cooked.

Kent based Vegan couple, who have been exploring around for nice restaurants, and Oak on the green is on our top of the list. Really nice vegan options, good variety, good atmosphere.

Always good food, great service and a good atmosphere

Quiet for Sunday afternoon, seated and ordered fairly quickly and food also arrived in good time. Server was not very attentive, waited a while to ask for the bill and took even longer for them to provide the bill despite being relatively quiet and being able to see the server stood around.

Gorgeous food here, the menu gives some good choices and is quite varied. We enjoyed the fish and chips, the fajitas and the roasted veg with quinoa and everyone loved their dessert. Staff are attentive and the service exemplary. The manager Paul hospitality at its best, he even gave our American friends a present to take home 😉

Mid week meal with my niece, good selection of beers, Moretti is a fave! Good food, over indulged, the Banofee pie was yummy. My steak was medium rare, definitely no complaints. Thank you

Had a nice time here food was lovely apart from the raw chicken wings .which the staff and manager try telling me it wasn't .I was a chef in the house of commons so know raw chicken when I see it

Xmas day lunch £100 pp starter was lovely as for the main turkey dinner seemed rushed stuffing not cooked Yorkshire's not cooked gravy like water we was very disappointed with the price we paid expected a bit more really . Staff were lovely worked hard but shame about the food!

Very nice pub with easy drive from Leeds Castle. However, All food which we ordered, apart from beefburger was below average. My rump steak was overcooked and overburned. My daughter kids burger was so overburn, that we had to send it back.

Quite a small pub with a lot of tables in small restaurant so can feel quite crowded at times. Food portion sizes have become smaller over the years and occasionally have come out cold. Also is quite expensive including the drink prices, even for soft drinks. The wait time is quite lengthy too.

What went wrong? This place used to be top notch with great food. Looks to me like it runs on it's old rep. £90 for two courses each and soft drinks.
