Sorry to say my meal was very poor. My starter, whitebait £8 consisted of about 10 overcooked and inedible fish. I honestly think they were left over from a previous meal, re-fried and presented with a small amount of salad (very, very poor) Had I not been with company I would have complained and refused to pay. For my main meal I had steak and ale pie, the short crust pastry was rock hard and the filling inadequate. Accompanying mash, vegetables and gravy were good. Won't be going back again!

Sorry to say, but our lunch today was very disappointing. My brother in-law and I started with whitebait nearly £8 per portion. Measly amount arrived (thank goodness, as it was so, so bad) I can only say it looked like it was yesterday’s leftovers, recooked to ruin… inedible! I feel ashamed to have paid for it without complaining. Our main meals ‘steak and ale pie’ were 5 out of 10…mash, gravy and veg fine, but the pie crust was concrete hard (totally dried out prior to baking) Wives meals were 4/5 out of 10 (jacket potatoes and fish and chips) Positives….staff were friendly. Took a flyer on this pub, never going back again.

Have never been made to feel so unwelcome in a place. Walked in, (no we hadn't booked) to be met by whom I guess was the owner or manager. To be told they had 15 minute wait between each order. They where book through the afternoon and we would have to wait for food. Told to orderour drinks at the bar which we did. Was in such a sharp and harsh tone i almost walked straight out. But then a nice waitress brought us menus. After 20 minutes we decided what we were going to have but no one came to take our order so went down to the bar again. Stood at the bar for 10 minutes whilst the manager/owner and another waitress made themselves look busy and did not even make eye contact. No over customers . I said I would like to order food. To be told I had to wait. Would not go back there ever again.we promptly left as had two young ones who were starving by this point. And went to another pub that where we received the best welcome and customer service.

We booked for a table in the restaurant with friends. On arrival the restaurant was in darkness. We were told it wasn't worth opening the restaurant. So we joined other diners in the bar area. Not what I wanted atall. Noisy and no ambience. Waitress wiped her nose continually with her fingers. Not what we wanted when she then served us our food. Definitely not the experience I was hoping for. Very disappointed. Food was good but experience spoiled by aforementioned points.

Shocking from the second we walked in, we was asked like normal have you got a booking then shown our table. Then someone came up to us and said sorry you haven’t got a booking but then said oh yes you called but I wasn’t sure as you didn’t confirm, then said it’s okay we’ll make it work; we stayed put. Food was beautiful but management & waitresses didn’t have a clue what they were doing. After meal we was going to have desert but waited 30 minutes for the waitress to come over & we just asked for the bill. Then waited another age to try and pay. Wasn’t that busy.

We had a nice Sunday lunch at this ancient pub just off the A249 at Detling. We received a warm welcome and were shown to our table the old wood beamed interior. As it was a Sunday we chose the roast but started with a baked camembert. There really wasn't enough bread to dip but they happily supplied more when I asked. The roast lamb and chicken meals were tasty and served nice and hot with a good selection of vegetables. Personally I would have liked my potatoes a little more crispy but my wife was happy with them. After a little break we had dessert. Etom Mess sundae which was a little lacking on the meringue front and a hit Cherry sundae with cherry brandy which was very tasty indeed. The staff were very pleasant and checked back to see if our food was ok and it was easy to attract someone's attention to get another drink etc. Our two courses each, shared starter and two non alcoholic drinks came to £76 which included an added on service charge. There is a free onsite car park.

Ah, this place brought back some fabulous memories of school dinners and granny’s cooking in the 70s or 80s. We were here for a Sunday roast. The beef was tough as old boots and the veg, like they had been on the boil all day. The gravy was just how I liked it, 3 teaspoons of Bisto, thick and grainy…Ah…. The roast potatoes too. Not those fancy crispy, tasty ones. Boiled, with that drive-by roast look and texture. Everything out of a packet, just the way I like it. And it was so nice of the management to allow the waiting staff to sit at the bar rather than serve the tables. You just don’t see that nowadays in modern pubs and restaurants.

If you want a warm welcome please do not go to that pub. The black horse 5 minutes down the road …. Wow what a difference. We have just relocated to the are having moved from ightham and having the luxury of too ana big local pubs, the plough ivy hatch and the George and dragon ightham, (please visit them ) We arrived , it was empty, the most coldest unwelcoming visit I have ever had in a pub. Firstly, We had to ask for ice in the the vodka and tonic ? We were with our 2 x 3 month old minutiae dachshund puppies and asked (as they aren’t ready until tomorrow to be put in the floor ) if I put my coat on the sofa , could they sleep there. The owner basically said no (picture attached). We then asked if they were serving food , we were rudely told no not until 5. We said we would wait until then and we’re told rudely again that they had a large group coming in later. We said ok we will just order chips and it was clear we were being a burden. After one drink we finally left and moved to the black horse. Wow what a difference, a warm welcoming pub and no issue with our little puppies. Also busy abd and a great atmosphere UNLIKE this pub ! It’s a real shame as we are a huge family with friends that love to frequent our local pub. So pleased we found the black horse ❤️if you want a friendly local welcome this is the pub for you. My parting comment is the landlord had had the pub for a long time and clearly appears like he’s over it ! If I’m wrong a refresh on customer service would be recommended .

This is a local pub for local people.. We were staying in the area and after reading reviews, thought this would be a good place to eat out one evening. However… on ordering the first drinks, a spirit with mixer, the coke came out of an opened, warm, 1.5 litre bottle. Which was of course, flat. We had booked a table for the evening, were sat in the (busy) bar, not restaurant. The atmosphere seemed great for the locals meeting for a drink at the end of the week. Staff pleasant and helpful, if not a bit rushed. The menu was very basic, typical pub grub.. sausage and mash, pie and chips, scampi.. nothing special. Having eaten in various establishments across the country, this seemed dated and uninteresting. We shared a starter of Camembert, baked nicely. Not enough bread which perhaps could’ve been slightly toasted so it had some backbone for dipping. No cutlery came for the starter so we had to use the steak knives and forks provided for this course. The waitress commented that we’d used the ‘sharp knives’ too early when she came to collect the plates. We explained, we were not given cutlery for the starter course. She didn’t understand. The main courses arrived, one sirloin steak, rare as asked although quite bland in flavour. I can only imagine that Greene King brewery insist on using cheaper ingredients. The chips were very tasty. The mixed grill was an abomination. The pork chop was so dry but the fatty edge was practically raw. ( please see photo) the gammon dry, lamb overcooked but not so bad. The sausage was deep fried and very overdone and despite making a strong request that the steak was rare, came dry and thoroughly overdone. This meal was not eaten. When the waitress came to remove plates and our displeasure was voiced, we were not offered any kind of apology or recompense. We were however asked if we wanted desert, which was declined. We both thought perhaps we should’ve left once viewing the menu but instead put ourselves £85 out of pocket for a very disappointing meal. Oh, and the cutlery was dirty, (still had solid food stuck to it). Toilets not clean also. Come on guys, basic standards!

I imagine the pub hasn't changed much over the last few hundred years and we had booked for lunch in advance so they had allocated us a table in the bar area. The staff were very attentive made sure the kids were ok and took the orders from our table. We didn't have to wait long for the food , and although it was the basics , i.e. filled baguettes , soup and chips etc all were very tasty and hot with generous portions. The staff made sure we were ok and afterwards we walked up the road with the dogs to the village shop and the children went into the park with swings etc. A good stopover as an alternative to a service station.

Let down by management with an extremely bad attitude. Been visiting this pub every weekend ( both days) for a year or more, we’ve always been more than polite to all staff ( younger ones have always been most helpful and polite) . On two occasions recently, having found a table been told when gone to order “ no walk in’s” which we found extremely rude, perhaps saying “ bookings only” would have been kinder, maybe we are over sensitive but on the second occasion we called in to request email address so we could address our disappointment at being told no service as regulars and was met by an extremely rude manageress, shouting over us, not letting us speak, we got cut off, and called back to resume the conversation, another member of staff picked up and the manageress could clearly be heard shouting in the background “ what does he want now? I’ve already told him” which was unprofessional at the very least. Against my better judgement my partner wished to give them another chance. They took the order, took our money, brought the food then the manager said he couldn’t “ find room for us” as we’d been rude to his wife! ( which is completely untrue , it was the other way round) anyway, she can rest assured we won’t ever be returning! Nice food , and the younger staff are delightful, but management do not take criticism ( the same woman we have witnessed arguing with another customer in the summer who dared to complain) well… they could do with some training in hospitality.

My experience at the Boat House was very disappointing. As a party of three we were there when the doors were opened. Shown to a table and given menus and asked to order at the bar. No problem so far, we ordered three meals. One was a starter for someone eating later and a sandwich and ham egg and chips. Seemed a little expensive but family meal in difficult situation. Our server arrived with two starters. We only ordered one but as a meal for one of us. Half an hour later our other meals arrived. One Sandwich and ham egg and chips. In the mean time the server had returned to the table and refunded money for the other starter that I had not ordered. The food was fine if not a little expensive. One of the small eggs I had was hard and for the price there was not a lot on the plate. I had approached the server about the delay and was told it was my fault. Strange, it wasn’t me that got the order wrong. When she took the spare plate of starter back, how long does it take for someone to cook to eggs and make a cheese sandwich, half an hour seemed a bit much. I did mention to her that there were three of us and we ordered three dishes, where was the problem, but it still seemed to be my fault. I would not recommend this.

We visited on a Saturday evening for a family birthday. The food (Cheese burger and cod & chips) was great and good service. Desserts were nice and big, sadly I didn’t get a picture before we dug in! Lovely classic pub atmosphere. Would be good if they had menus as you have to read off the board which an older guest found difficult, but ultimately we had a lovely meal. Will be returning.

Popped in for afternoon tea with a voucher. We come every year for my Birthday and this year was still fabulous. Service has got alot quicker and our servers looked after us asking if we wanted more coffee. The ham in the sandwichs was particularly delious and the warm scones were just yummy. Coffee from here is the best and yes I say that every year! Best of all you can have as many cup as you wanted. Shame it's a hours drive to get there but we will be back!
